Been here 2 times, I always give people second chance , my first time was there obviously not a good impression, food was OK , customer service was also OK , I would've give this place 2 stars but my second times was order as to go, walked in the door, waiter/waitress just looked at me and walked on, after couple min of just trying to see if anyone notices me !!? Still nothing so I had to ask for a service?so I walked out with a happy feeling to be honest , because I don't have to spend my money for an ok food with self asking for service?, dont have time and will not come back
Review Source:My coworker and I went over here to pick up our lunch to-go and their food is amazing. It could've been warmer (or we could've arrived sooner). But the quality was great and the place looked clean. Would definitely come back again and am VERY interested in having one (or two) of their margaritas.
Review Source:Tried Mexquite on a whim and was not disappointed. Nice interior and a little more upscale (think Zocalo).
The salsa has a great deep, rich flavor. I ordered the Shrimp in Chipotle and it was similar to camarones ala diabla ; buttery and spicy.
The rice and beans are flavorful too; always what I judge a Mexican restaurant on.
I'll be back for sure. This time I'll sit on the patio!
I've eaten here about 6-7 times now and always enjoy the place. 4 of the times i ordered take-out and am always impressed wtih how fast they have the food prepared (usually about 10-15 minutes).
The service is usually pretty good and they do have good happy-hour deals.
I will definitely keep going back to this place.
I've been here a couple of times and the food has been consistent, but the service varies. Â A couple of times the service was slow, once it was HORRIBLE, the remainder except last night was average. Â So, last night's service was EXCELLENT. Â Our waiter was very friendly and attentive. Â Our drinks, chips and salsa came out quickly. Â And so did our food. Â I'd have to say that last night's waiter was my favorite. Â
So, I had the veggie burrito and it came with a green tortilla with verde sauce drizzled all over it. Â It was quite tasty. Â
Oh, the other thing I do love about this place is that they make their margaritas nice and stiff...the way I like it!!! Â I appreciate getting a good buzz when I order an adult-alcoholic beverage because if I wanted just lime juice, I would of ordered just plain lime juice...get my drift ; )
Gracias
p.s. Â the nachos here are muy bueno too btw...cheesy, beany and it comes with some marinated red onions...sooo good!!!
I passed this place randomly one day, and wanted to try it. I met my wife there after work one day. We were in time for Happy Hour. $3 beers and house margarita's were good. We ended up eating at the bar and the food was very good. My wife had fajitas and I had the seafood plater. The salsa was awesome! I'll go back!
Review Source:Cons
We had a large group reservation and nothing was set up for us. Â There were no tables prepared or anything. Â We ended up having to sit on the patio, which was not even heated. Â It was freezing. Â We had to bring in blankets from our cars to stay warm. Â Meanwhile, the heat lamps remained at the entrance of the restaurant. Â It look 45 minutes to get our food, which would be reasonable for a group size of 23 people. Â However, about 10 orders were completely forgotten. Â Half of the group got to start eating and the other half had to wait another 15 minutes to get their food. Â The food was underwhelming and salty. Â On the menu, it explicitly states that separate checks are available. Â We did not have the option to get separate checks and received a huge bill for 23 people. Â They told us we couldn't split it up.
Pros
We had dietary restrictions and they were helpful with communication which ingredients they use and were able to modify dishes for us. Â They gave us 10% off our bill for the large group and for all the service issues. I've been here not with a group and it seemed a lot better. Â The margaritas were tasty. Â The food was good, but unimpressive.
Okay, I'm from Texas so I have a very specific idea of what great Mexican food tastes like. Â I just can't do the "big corporate chain" thing anymore so I was so excited to find this independent authentic place in Folsom. Â This is my favorite Mexican place in the area to go. Â I crave their shrimp tacos and the sauce they put on it can't be beat, tangy and creamy. Â The place is really clean, great outdoor seating area with a new overhang so I will be enjoying it this spring and summer. Â The margs are too good to pass up so pace yourself and spend the extra amount for the top shelf version! Â I have always had great service there as well. Â Love love love this place!
Review Source:Okay, I've been here a few times and every time I am here I am disappointed. Â As with another reviewer, it's a shame I have to even provide it one star. Â
On this particular night, we had a large crowd with us. Â They put us on their back patio -- okay fine. Â The problem is it was freezing! Â No heating lamps or anything! Â Another issue was that about 40% of our orders were inaccurate. Â I think I'm actually being generous with this figure, but the server came out with a bunch of food to which no one could lay claim to because it wasn't what they ordered. Â The icing on the cupcake was that my friend's meal had a hair in it and it was not her hair! Â
So, eventually all the food made it's way out. Â I actually was fortunate and got my food first. Â I ordered a shrimp burrito and it wasn't worth the $10. Â The shrimp burrito at DOS COYOTES far outperforms in presentation and taste over what I received at Mexquite. Â I was not impressed. Â The shrimp tasted rubbery like it was cooked too long or was frozen. Â The shrimp at DOS COYOTES seems a lot more fresh and plump.
The server did attempt to rectify the poor service. Â The food with the hair found in it was removed from the bill and the entire bill was given a 25% discount. Â However, when we received the bill, we were not allowed to do separate checks as stated on the menu. Â The menu does have a statement that says separate checks are allowed, however, the sever stated that it was not allowed. Â I suspect this was to ensure her mandatory gratuity for large parties.
I will not return to this place for a meal. Â As with some of the other reviewers, I could spend a whole heck of a lot less somewhere else and get much better service and quality food.
Just finished eating at Mexquite, a place I have passed by dozens of times hungry without trying it out. I have been missing out.
It took my 8 year olds son's recommendation to convince me to try it out.
Delicious!
The complimentary starter chips were slightly thicker than I was expecting (from the average Mexican restaurants I've been to), but I got over it quickly because they were very tasty. Their house salsa that comes with the chips was also very good - medium spiciness so it works for everyone.
I ordered the Mexquite burrito, which by appearance is the oversized burrito that you would expect from a Mexican restaurant, but I never expected the taste. The tortilla, the carne asada, the Spanish rice, the refried beans, the cheese and the toppings of red sauce and sour cream - each part (and I may be missing a couple) was individually spectacular.
What surprised me the most was how fresh everything tasted. Not just the salsa fresca and guacamole (which come with it), but even the meat tasted like they had actually made it right when I ordered.
For the service - they asked several times if everything was satisfactory and if we had everything we needed. The waitress was in training, but you couldn't tell because she got everything right and was very sweet.
Good music, too - nearly all in Spanish, but not the mariachi that you here often in Mexican restaurants. They played pleasant soft rock/adult alternative music that would make me want to track down the albums if I spoke the language.
I enjoy recommending restaurants to family and friends. This will be one that I recommend to many.
I have been to this place 4 times, and we are always greeted with a smile. The service is excellent, as are the chips and Salsa. I recommend the Platillo Tampaqueno ( Flat Steak). It melts in your mouth, and also comes with a mole enchilada , that rounds out the meal. If you like Negra Modelo  you are in for a treat because they have it on TAP and its COLD!! BE careful if you order appetizers though, because they give you  A LOT of food , and you will have to take some home TO GO! If you like Cevechie you will not be dissapointed with MEXQUITE!!
Review Source:Nice atmosphere, convenient location in proximity to my home so I wish I could say it was great..but it's not.
The service has never been very good and the Cocktails are just so-so.
Chips were hard and seemed stale; however the salsa was descent. I was really looking forward to my Enchilada/Taco Combo, but was very disappointed. The meat in the Taco was tough and greasy. My husband had the burrito which was ta little tasty, but again the meet seemed greasy. My guess is the food is not freshly prepared at Mexquite.
Needless to say, my overall experience at Mexquite wasn't so great and I likely won't ever go back.
Had a great dinner with my girlfriends here! Â They have quite an extensive selection of margaritas and other cocktails to choose from. Â I decided to go with one that had 2 types of rum, triple sec, grenadine, pineapple and oj...wow- this drink was huge and delicious!! Â The bowl of tortilla soup that is included with the dinner combinations was also delicious...but by the time my food came, I was full! Â The chicken flauta was pretty tasty, not sure that I would get an enchilada again, I'd probably try something else. Â Overall, we had a great time and the food was definitely worth coming back for!
Review Source:We liv in El Dorado Hills and it is hard to find a good mexican restaurant nearby. Â My family really enjoys Mexquite. Â The chips and salsa are awesome, just don't eat too many before your meal comes or you will be bringing it home. Â We usually make sure we go there when it is not too busy. Â I can get crazy busy on Friday and Saturday nights. Â On another note they have a great New Years Eve Party. Â Make sure to get a driver for the ride home. Â The margaritas are strong!
Review Source:We ordered an appetizer and a combo meal and both of them came out at the same time.  Their tacos not great at all, some type of orangeish looking juice ( grease) came out when I took a bite and it splattered all over my plate! Cheese enchiladas had no spice at all and the  server told us that they make them mild for kids and peanut butter is one of the ingredients!!! No thanks, I save my peanut butter for my protein shakes! Chips are thick and well, thick. No water refills were given and service could be improved. We came out here to eat based on a recommendation... I recommend eating elsewhere.
Review Source:I've really gotten to like this place. Lots of draft beers from Mexico as well as many tequilas.
Specials every nite. Good solid restaurant food. Pleasant service. You don't get presented with your check before you're ready!
The steak ranchero and the chile verde are good. Also try the crab enchiladas.
Mmm mexican food, my first love. Service was quick, food was amazing, chips and salsa were unlimited. I ordered the Burrito de Pollo Asado and was very impressed. Huge portions- I probably could have made it into 3 meals. It wasn't fluffed with a ton of rice, it also had plenty of chicken, black beans, pico de gallo, and tomatillo salsa. The tomato flour tortilla was delicious. It was topped with salsa verde (and plenty of it), sour cream, and cheese which made it even better. AMAZING. Nomnombombdotcom!
Review Source:Great friendly service. Loved the Seafood Salad samples my husband shared from his plate--shrimp was juicy and spicy, crab and snapper just right and the cilantro based Italian creamy dressing on the side was perfect. The fajita salad I had was ok, the steak/chicken combo was a bit dry with raw bell peppers and onions which I thought would had been seared--but it was a light change from my expectations. Â I almost ordered the Chile Relleno ala carte but Maria advised it's vegan with no egg. Â So with that, I chose the Fajita salad instead--which I left the black beans on the bottom of the bowl and should have asked for none. Â Loved the salsa (they make fresh with roasted peppers that had a perfect smoky kick) so we bought some to take home (they included chips). Chips are good too. Â
We'll be back to explore more and hope for the same consistency as today (after reading the ratings I was a bit worried). Â Thanks Maria for wonderful hospitality and great menu advice!
Wow, surprised to see such a low rating. I've been coming here with my family for years and it's always consistently great food and service. The tacos, fajitas, burritos and nachos are always delicious. Everything is served piping hot. They are a little stingy on extras (like cheese, sour cream, salsa and guac) so you might have to ask for more (and they will charge you) but the food is so good that it's worth it.
It does get pretty busy, especially in the summer time, so avoid the crowds if you don't want the "bad" service people are complaining about. I mean, hello? They're really busy! The bar area is always fun, and the outdoor patio seating in the back with the heat lamps is a treat.
Warning though: DO NOT come for their breakfast/brunch on weekends. Trust me on this one. It's...bad, to say the least. Really bad. Stick to dinner and you won't be disappointed.
When the key takeaway from a dining experience is the complimentary salsa, that ain't good. I had dinner here with one of my friends who ordered the steak fajitas and I opted for the chicken adobado. My dish was a grilled chicken breast on mashed yams with some sauce I am still trying to pinpoint the ingredients other than the overly evident salt. The chicken was tough and rubbery, two adjectives that should never describe poultry. There went $14 perfectly good beer money dollars. The service was adequate but could have been more attentive. Not a bad enough place to give one star, but certainly not worthy of more than two. They have margaritas, perhaps you should go there for one of those and enjoy some good chips and salsa. Then again...
Review Source:Dinner with the family Sunday night. Where to start. Wife couldn't decide what to order, Chicken Crema or Tortilla Soup. I suggested both, eat ur favorite and the boys will eat the rest. Good thing she was OK with the Chicken because the soup never came. The chicken served in a cream broth seemed old and reheated due to the separation. My chipotle chicken was rubbery and horrible, stay away from it. My oldest ordered a burrito, who knows since it was gone in 60 seconds. The best was the Bandera Nachos my other son ordered. Finally a kids meal for the smallest, seemed fine.
This was my last trip to Mexquite, poor service to top it off, no soup, no water refills, dingy hostess. Take your hard earned cash elsewhere, you've been warned!
Wow, this place is getting a really bad rep for charging for an extra bowl of salsa, and reasonably so. Â However, I think they may have changed their policy, as I was there last Thursday and made the dreaded decision to ask for a second bowl to go with our entree. Â Lo and behold, no charge. Â I was totally prepared to pony up the additional $3 too, so that was nice. Who knows though, maybe I just had a nice server.
Try the tortilla soup as an entree. It's fab. The large serving comes with the standard tortilla soup, but also has fresh avocado, chicken, and queso fresco. Â
All other dishes I've tried are pretty much okay. They won't blow you away, but you should leave pretty full and satisfied.
Wow, waited for over an hour to seat a table of six. Finally decided to split up into two booths, (8 booths were empty at this time) shortly after we ordered drinks a party of six comes in and gets seated without any wait. They took a table from an empty booth and put that on the end to make a table for six, uhhh......yeah "check out the brain on brad". So I went to talk to the manager, evidently he stepped out for a minute, no problem. I informed the waiter I wanted to talk to the manager as soon as he returned.
20 minutes later I go back up to the counter to talk to the manager who hadn't come to talk to my table yet, informed him of our experience to which he was very apologetic. Ok, fine... Then he zeroed out our bill, ok, not my goal here but at this point whatever...
Then!, my friend had to leave so I joined the other half of my party as they finished their meal. They get their bill which hadn't even been discounted. I found this out when I got home, immediately called the manager who said he would straighten this all out and call me back. I am still waiting for his call. The manager/ owner/ host named Chris is; uninformed, unaware, and unprofessional. He told me he was unaware of; our long wait, the moving of the booth tables (which is unallowed according to him) and the zeroed out bill.
As for the food; who cares! With such a horrible experience like that I will never go there again nor will I ever suggest it to anyone, except for a place to avoid. It truly is too bad I have to give at least one star.
update: it has now been more than 10 days and still no credit back to my card, or even a phone call. See my Identical reviews for this restaurant on every other review cite known to man.
First timer at this restaurant. The feel of the restaurant was comfortable -- funky decor. The hostess seemed a little flustered and not able to multi-task (she could have been new). Rather than waiting 25-30 minutes for a table/booth on a Friday night, myself and a friend decided to sit at the bar top. We waited a good five minutes before we were acknowledged by the bartender - she was pleasant.
I ordered the Burrito Vegetariano (Veggie Burrito), which has cilantro rice, black beans, seasonal veggies, pico de gallo, wrapped in a spinach flour tortilla, topped with salsa verde melted cheese, tomatillo salsa and sour cream. The burrito was a decent size (went home with leftovers) and flavorful/tasty. My friend ordered the Burrito de Pollo Asado (Grilled Chicken), which has grilled marinated chicken, black beans, cilantro rice, pico de gallo and roasted tomatillo salsa on a tomato flour tortilla, topped with salsa verde, cheese and sour cream. Both of us agreed that we'd give the burritos 3 out of 5 stars -- perfectly adequate food. I wasn't a fan of their Original Margarita, definitely not worth $7. Great chips and salsa though!
Order for two:
Burrito Vegetariano $10.00
Original Margarita $7.00
Burrito de Pollo Asado $11.00
Soft Drink $2.50
Total - $31.79
The service at Mexquite could use some assistance. The staff was very short with my table and lacked any semblance of warmth or welcome into the restaurant. Drink refills only happened once the entire time we were there and ordering a margarita was a hassle in itself after we had initially ordered our meals.
I ordered the Polo en Chipotle. I enjoyed it, however, it reminded me of a curry dish of some sorts. In which case, if I wanted that kind of a meal I would have gone to an entirely different restaurant altogether. Nonetheless, it was decent. My friend ordered a carnitas dish and it was just a mess. The carnitas lacked in flavor and was dry; furthermore, the margaritas we ordered were horridly mixed and didn't taste all that great.
I would not recommend this establishment based on their sub-par service and weak dishes.
Ok. So some friends and I bought $100 in gift cards for $50 at Costco and decided to give them a try Friday night.
To begin parking is a nightmare.  But it was a nice night and I didn't mind walking a few hundred yards for Mexican food.  So we get a seat quickly despite all the cars.  As I am looking at the menu I notice something odd.  As it turns out tomatoes are Very Expensive??? You get one small dish of salsa and have to pay for refills.  Ok.....
So I noticed they had fajitas which is.something I always look for.  And as it turns out all of us got the fajitas.  My friends got a $40 pitcher of margaritas that were crazy strong. Sooooo much tequila. Great pour barkeep.  I guess agave is cheaper than tomatoes.
On to the food. Wow those were some damn good fajitas. Â My tortillas did get there about five minutes late but so worth it. Â I cleaned my plate and the side dish. Â
The staff is o.k.  They check on you either every two minutes or ignore you when you give them a please help me look.
Overall nice little place. Â They have a kick ass tequila bar and a nice patio. Â If you live in Folsom give em a try.
Hubs and I used to be Mexquite "regulars" (eating there three or four times a month), but after tonight I'd have to say, Mexquite has gone south of the border.
The best part of Mexquite is (was) their tortilla soup, flavorful with roasted corn and just the right amount of heat. Â Hubs and I ordered our dinners and when our soup arrived, it was lukewarm. Â Not good.
Nothing is worse than cold soup, so we sent it back asking if it could be heated up in the microwave. Â Our poor server returned to tell us that the cook was "in a bad mood" , had told her that the soup was "hot enough", and wouldn't let her use his microwave which was located in the back of the kitchen. Â Okaaaaaay...
Our food came out and was very good, but we were still a little irritated about the whole soup debacle. Â At the very end of our meal, our server tried to serve us the soup again (apparently, she had turned the burner up on the pot) and it was better, but still not the best we've had there. Â
Our server, Violet, was great and did everything she could to make things right, but the overall experience with the Soup Nazi did not impress us. Â Hopefully they were just having an "off night". Â
Oh yeah, apparently the cost of the tomatoes to make their salsa has tripled and they are now charging $1.50 for additional chips and salsa. Â Talk about nickel and diming you. Â I think that with the money they make on their full bar, they can spring for the chips and salsa.
I have a couple friends who like Mexquite, but nobody who absolutely has to go there simply because the service isn't very good and the food is pedestrian at best.
From MY experience, I have not liked anything about the place.
The first time I went there, my wife and I sat at the bar as it wasn't very busy and was interested in watching the TV and chatting with the good looking/younger bartender... big mistake.
Upon asking the bartender what she thought of the burritos, the response was, "they're so big that after I ate one, I didn't know if I was super full or needed to take a huge dump..."
Needless to say, not exactly the best first impression and I didn't order the burrito...
I have been there at least 8 times since and every time is exactly the same: slow service, bad drinks, terrible happy hour, and pedestrian food.
I would not recommend this as a place to eat, but if you are forced there as a group, there could be worse places to spend your time... I guess.
Sadly, I had a "going away" dinner here on Monday night with my former roomies. Â With a new job comes a move back to Texas. Â Good for me, bad for Mexquite.
The dinner here? Â Still smokin! Â Started with their chips/salsa and could probably just order drinks and have the chips/salsa all night. Â But we didn't do that. Â Just a pitcher of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and I also ordered the combo of two Chimichangas, 1 beef and 1 chicken. Â Both were scarily good! Â Loads of sides with it, salad, refried beans, rice, etc.
Service was top notch, as usual. Â Parking was not bad, but it was a Monday night with no local teams playing.
Want Mexican food (NOT Tex-Mex or Cal-Mex), then you come here. Â These guys know how to do it!!!
I'll be back when I'm in town again.
Tacos with mashed potatoes in them? Â Are you kidding me? Â Is the chef ME when I was 9-years-old? Â This is a bad idea guys. Â Potatoes are filler and you know it, and the 10% of the taco that had meat - dry, overcooked, little flavor. Â Im embarrassed for Mexquite.
The ceviche was ok, always an excellent compliment to a much needed beer. Â Without the ceviche and chips & salsa, I would have had to go get food at another restaurant after leaving Mexquite.
Both stars are for the service and ambience, clean dining area yadda yadda...so consider the LEAST important part of eating mexican food a 2 out of 2.
My date-type person's nachos looked REALLY good--I don't know if that was only in comparison to my dish, or if they really were some of the best looking nachos and I just happened to order the ONE thing on the menu that was just really terrible.
Mexquite is a great place! Â The service is always great and they make the best margaritas in town! Â They pride themselves on the many varieties of tequila they serve - and we're not talking about "Jose Cuervo"! Â (I don't think they even have that!)
The food is always very yummy! Â I could make a meal out of jsut the chips and salsa!! Â Try it, you'll like it!
I really like this place. It would be dynamite if it were located nearer to Sacramento.
Great service, great chips, great salsa, REALLY good margaritas. They have a ridiculous selection of tequila to pick from. They have these chorizo volcansitos that are crazy good. Also, if you like mole sauce, then that's another great option. I've tried quite a few things there and each item was really good.
The biggest detriment is that it's quite a drive into Folsom just to get there. There are other great restaurants you pass along the way, like Fat's, if you're driving from Sacramento.
Otherwise, a great addition to the Mexican restaurants in the area.
The food was ok. Â It was better than I anticipated from a restaurant in the Raley's shopping center. Â They served hard alcohol so that was a big plus. Â
I ordered the Calamari appetizer, tad bit greasy but ok. Â The Volcansitos appetizer at least gave you the option of variety for the type of meat you wanted in each. Â Chips and salsa were abundant and the service was pretty quick. Â The hubby had the crab enchilada which he said was very good and there was no sign it even existed on his plate. Â And yes it was real crab.
Mexquite is simply not that good. I think people in EDH and Folsom like it more because of location than anything else. The prices are high, and the menu is stereotypical pseudo-mexican fare with no kick.
A little story: some friends and I decided we needed some noon-time Mimosas and chips and salsa to kick start our day. After a long night of getting tanked the night before, it was the only thing that would do us right. We head to Mexquite because it was close to the driving range we were hungoverly (is that a word? it is now, son) hacking balls at.
Sit down, order our 4 mimosas. The waiter scribbles something on his pad, talks to us a bit, then asks 'wait so you guys wanted two beers, and what else?' Uh... 4 mimosas dude. 'Shit... ok' as he scribbles out whatever he wrote on his pad. How.. just how? Anyway, we forgave him, laughed about it, moved in.
15 minutes go by, and our waiter returns. 'So like... a mimosa is champagne with orange juice right?'... a long pause follows as we look at the poor, probably high kid.... 'yea... yea its orange juice and champagne, guy.' Kid scuttles away.
15 more minutes pass, waiter returns 'oh dudes, the bar is like, slammed. Sorry guys'... the place is empty, and we are looking at the two bar tenders just standing there watching the game.
15 more minutes pass... we are on the verge of just taking off and finding somewhere else to drink... kid comes back with PERHAPS the lamest excuse in human history. I give you, mexquite waiter: 'Dudes, i think the bar is out of oranges.... or.... or something.' Its as if halfway through his sentence, he realized how awful his own lie was. Are they squeezing the oranges themselves with their bare hands? There is a grocery store literally less than a 50 yards away, ill get the orange juice myself if you guys are that low on it.
Suffice to say, we got up and boned out. Ive been there a few times before that, and i was never impressed. Besides, their margos are overpriced. Go somewhere else, please.
Nice, large patio area with views of open space and heat lamps.
Excellent margaritas, chips, and salsa.
I had a seafood dish called the platillo de la playa, and it was good. My date had a seafood soup that was even better. He had scared me away from ordering it, saying that it was really spicy, but it wasn't bad at all. Â The broth was tomato based, and the spiciness was balanced out with cream and a slightly sweet taste.
The servers were very friendly and knowledgeable. Mexquite is located in the parking lot with Raleys, but on the far end, near the bike trail, which makes for a nice walk after dinner.
This place is tasty! Everything I have had so far has been fresh, homemade, and delicious. Check out there extensive menu online. The restaurant is comfortable with inside and patio seating. The bar area is a bit small but nice, with 2 flat screens on either end.
The chips were fresh, salty and addicting with a smoky roasted salsa accompanying them. The wait staff has been helpful and courteous every time, always keeping drinks/chips/salsa full. If you find yourself out in Folsom craving some good food and drinks you cant miss with mexquite.
