Not a really great place to eat and I got a little sick on the food which isn't good when you have another 4 hours left in the car until you get home. Â
There was one waitress taking care of the entire restaurant, however, I think it was the right amount as there were 3 people eating here.
Well not too good and not very clean. Â I would have to say stick away from this place unless they can find some miracle to fix what they have.
Don't eat here.
We were driving through and wanted an easy meal. I'm Asian and have been to enough Japanese/Chinese combo places and was willing to set my expectations low. But this was pretty sad. We should have gone for gyros down the street.
We ordered mapo tofu. Horrible. Â
Miso soup is salty. No. It's a salt lick.
Pencil thin fried shrimp appetizer.
Sticky soy sauce bottles and sticky tables.
We will be stopping at Wendy's to wipe down the bad taste still left in our mouth.
I've eaten here multiple times throughout the years and I've never a bad experience. Their Miso Soup is the best I've eaten anywhere and the Ginger Dressing they put on the salad is absolutely delicious. Our services has always been good and we've never had to wait an unacceptable amount of time for food. On side note, some evenings it can get a little loud. Mikados has $11 Sake Bombs which attracts a rather rambunctious college crowd later at night. It's never been a problem for us but I wouldn't recommend a family dinner with the kids Saturday after eight pm.
Review Source:I've gone to Mikado's about 15-20 times while I went to school at ND and never had a bad time. Â The service was always good and the food was always good too. Â They're real nice and never minded if you stayed a long time to talk to a friend after you meal ect. Â The sushi was pretty decent and the box meals were pretty good too. Â They have a few meals that comes in a boat shaped dish that are pretty fun.
It's a great place to grab a sit down meal at an affordable price. Â I would definitely reccomend it. Â Also it's a great place to go sake bombing too!
Understanding that we do live in South Bend, Indiana, the quality of sushi that I am expecting is a bit lower than maybe what I would expect from a  restaurant in Chicago. This place is dirt cheap, and honestly my experience has been that you get what you pay for. This is a great place if you just want to have a meal outside of the house but just want something casual.
What I like best about this place though is that it not only has sushi and the standard Japanese staples like Teriyaki Chicken, but it also has some other dishes from Thai and Chinese cuisine if you have a group that not everyone is into the sushi.
Overall, a place with good service, decent atmosphere, and cheap food. A win for a college student like me wanting to escape the dining hall every once in the while without breaking the budget.
Terrible experience, never going back. This is long, so cliff's notes: The service is horrendous and the food manages to be just as bad - and it's not at a price point where that should potentially be the case, either.
I went along with a group of friends and the first thing I noticed is that it's actually a combination Chinese and Japanese restaurant. This is usually not a good thing, but we gave them the benefit of the doubt and our party tried a variety of Chinese and Japanese food and sushi.
Things already started going wrong with our soup, salad, and appetizers. The waitress didn't bring out my soup (though she managed to get everyone else's) even though it was included with my order, so I asked for it. She also forgot to bring a friend's appetizer order. The salad was absolutely drenched in some icky Thousand Island dressing. I forgot which makimono another friend got, but it was covered in some orange-colored sauce and he likened it to grocery store sushi.
I had ordered the Sashimi B platter, which is supposed to come with five different types of sashimi. Well, they decided not to tell me that instead of giving me salmon as one of the types as listed on the menu, they were going to give me double red snapper! Even if they were out of salmon, at the very least they needed to have told me about being out of salmon, and should also have asked what I would like to substitute instead of just giving me red snapper.
But it gets worse - they weren't out of salmon, as my friend had ordered four nigiri pieces of it, and they brought him his four pieces of salmon! I was incredulous. When I complained, the waitress had no idea and disappeared for a bit and then came back and said that they didn't give me salmon because they were "low" on inventory. I told her that I really liked salmon, and could I please get some salmon because that's what the menu said I would get and what I ordered. She disappeared again and when she came back told me that they were now in fact out of salmon and that substitutions were common - as if I shouldn't be complaining about it. I actually laughed. We couldn't even be mad about it, it was just that ridiculous - you can't make stuff like this up.
Note: I still don't have my soup. I flag down the same waitress I asked about it before and request it again.
Of course, not getting my salmon may not have been the worst thing, because my friend who ordered the salmon (and actually got salmon - need to make that distinction at Mikado, I guess) told me the quality was awful after his first piece. He had actually offered me half of his order since I didn't get any, but told me I shouldn't eat it and he eventually left three pieces of it - that's how bad it was. I wasn't happy with my sashimi either, but I did finish it.
The other food did not get good reviews either. A friend's entree salad was also drenched in Thousand Island, and the chicken teriyaki was similarly drenched in so much sauce the plate nearly looked like a soup.
Note: Even though we have teriyaki soup, I still don't have my soup. I give up.
Awful, awful, awful. Reading the other reviews and how positive they are makes me wonder in the back of my head if we even went to the same place. Yikes.
South Bend doesn't have the large selection of great sushi places like many bigger cities have. So I didn't really expect to find anything super great. This Mikado has pretty good tasting sushi at cheap prices. On my scale of sushi places I've tried in NYC, LA, Honolulu, Toronto, London,...this place ranks as probably average, which is great considering the size of the city.
FOOD :
- SUSHI - The short-grain rice used for the sushi was the proper Japanese rice I've used to make my own sushi with before & have eaten at many different Japanese restaurants, in at least 5 different major US cities & 3 Â major international ones. Sometimes, they substitute with a regular long grain rice, but it's still cooked well enough that I didn't mind the switcheroo in my sushi rolls. The sushi roll itself here can be a bit messy of a roll...especially when they're busy...but overall, the sushi rolls are made of quality ingredients that taste great together. I've actually had worse sushi in several boroughs of NY.
- FRIED RICE - the fried rice is a really light tasting version that thankfully doesn't taste oily like at most asian places I've been to...again in multiple cities & States. This place's fried rice is among my favorite versions actually.
- TEMPURA - yes, the tempura isn't a light dough like I'm used to...and actually has a harder crunch than at many places...but it still tastes pretty good, and the crunchiness is still there, so I'm actually pretty happy with this dish.
- OTHER FOODS - I've liked everything I've had here so far...and I've been here with my family & friends at least a dozen times. Although the preparation can be a little less meticulous than I'd like, the cooking & flavoring are perfect. I love the flavor combinations of everything here. Never had a bad-tasting dish.
SERVICE: Can be a bit slow & stretched thin, but always courteous & polite. The owners often go around the various tables & ask our feedback on our meals...very nice, personal touch there. Most asian places aren't nearly as nice & personable so I really appreciate the attention at this place.
SUMMARY: I highly recommend this place for any sushi, or Japanese food craving...or just any eating out experience, for anyone in South Bend & surrounding cities. Totally worth it for value of price & meal.
I have eaten Sushi at all the the sushi restaurant in this area. This is by far the worst. When Mikado first opened a few years ago I decided to give it a try. The first thing I noticed was how terrible the rice was. It was not the traditional Japanese short grain rice instead, it tasted like the flavorless Chinese restaurant white rice. It was terrible. Although, it made sense since the owners where Chinese and had just left their job as a cook and waitress at Great Wall Chinese Restaurant to try their dream to open a Japanese place.... only some forgot to tell them that Japanese uses different rice. OK so I am critical however I did try Mikado a few times and found they still used the same rice. So I stopped going there and figured they would be out of business in less than a year. Now it has been at least ten years it seems and the the place is still open. So I deiced it must be better so I stop in. The was a table of two eating other than that it was dead. The was a young girl like 8 or 10 years old doing her homework while mom worked at the restaurant. I see the menu has changed and they now have many Chinese dishes as well as Japanese. Anyway, I came to redeem them from my earlier critique of their Chinese rice sushi. I ordered an assortment of Nigiri Sushi to go. After a long wait I go the food and left. When I got in the car I opened the Styrofoam box and found hot sushi... yes HOT. The rice was hot enough to slight cook the bottom of the slice of raw fish on top. Gross! OK some of you may say the idea of raw fish is gross and are happy to get it hot but, this is sushi remember and serve slightly chilled or room temp maybe. I will say the rice was not the Chinese rice mentioned before it was now Japanese sushi rice but now it was hot. After 4 tries I give up and still don't understand how Mikado survives. I recommend Toyo or Matuba for good sushi in the Michiana area.
Review Source:As a woman of Chinese descent, I'm a stickler for authenticity, but I also realize that there is a place and time for Americanized versions of our Asian favorites. Sometimes you want to make the trek to Chicago's Chinatown, and sometimes you crave huge heaps of shrimp fried rice and gigantic sushi rolls filled with avocado and cream cheese. For the latter, Mikado fits the bill perfectly. This is a great place for going out with friends who are wary of sushi, since the menu has a lot of other Chinese and Japanese selections.
Service is always fast and friendly. Sushi takes a little longer, especially on a busy night, but that's to be expected. I do wish that complimentary miso soup were offered with the sushi, but that's a small quibble. The owner and his wife can frequently be seen in the restaurant greeting guests and asking about the meal. In a town chock-full of generic chains, it's nice to know you're supporting a family-owned operation.
They have a great lunch special. You get soup, salad and fried or plain rice with the listed choices of protein, a lot of food. I usually despise tereyaki chicken but in South Bend, you turn to things you never thought you would out of desperation. (i.e. getting your hair colored at one of the super walmarts)
It's flavorful and tender. They use dark meat by the way, which I prefer. The salad dressing is yummy, but I think it's just thousand island and soy sauce minus the relish. The tempura is disappointing.. not light and crunchy at all. The sushi I was really afraid to try because I was questioning the quality of fresh fish in this area but ya know.. when desperate.. Their spicy tuna really was not that bad, not fishy at all. Would I go try it again now that I'm back in civilization? No, but if you must.. it'll suffice. A step above grocery store sushi. I know some people like my then boyfriend that refused to ever step foot again into this place. Service can be spread pretty thin here so be patient.
