Mirabar has moved! Â Its on elbow street where the call, the spot, Â and jewel used to be. Â The space is beautiful! Â Of course it is much different then the old building but it is nice. Â Big bar, stage, lounge area with fireplace, and a pool table. Â This bar and the people that go there, little boys at night aside, are awesome and heterosexual friendly. Â I am quite straight and they never make me feel uncomfortable or that I don't belong. Â Especially Jack behind the bar, he is great. Â He recommended The ROI next door to eat, later on we went and quite a few guys from the bar were over there eating. Â I guess that block has locked down fun and hospitality. Â Hope they do a block party this year! Â Awesome!
Review Source:My disclaimer is that we did not actually get in. Â Yes I am a New Yorker, a woman, and love to go dancing with my gay boys. Â They are the best kind of boy really-they get me, give me tons of affection, think I'm stunningly beautiful even in scrubs when I wake up in the morning, and expect nothing but my unconditional adoration. Â Easy.
Again, I digress. Â
We came to Mirabar with the intent to dance the night away amongst beautiful men, but helas, we were ushered into a line on the left wall of the entrance and just stood there for 10 minutes. Â
The place was NOT packed, and it just seemed arbitrary to me. Â We waited with no prospect of entering the venue, while other people cruised by on our right, and started to shake their booties. Â
I would have liked to give Mirabar a better review, but helas, they shunned me, and hence invoked my wrath...which I tend to express through Yelp.
The only real gay-oriented dance club in Providence. Â The landmark business has recently moved to a new location, a bit down the street from the last one, but still in the same area.
The bartenders serve up strong cocktails at good prices while guests dance around the newly polished hardwood floors and strut their stuff on the "box". Â
They have special themed nights that keep the good times going all through week. Â Retro night on Wednesdays. Â Grilled Cheese Thursdays with strip poker hosted by Kitty Litter. Â What a fun time!
I was first pleased when I walked in on their first Tuesday night. Â It was very tasteful in appearance and a great place for a conversation. Â It seems odd to call it the "Mirabar" since it is so much smaller that the former club to bear this name. Â I was mildly annoyed at the selection of music videos which were a mix of oldies and country pop, including one by the homophobic Trace Adkins. Â But I was really interested on what it would be like on a weekend evening, so I went with my friend on Friday. Â We spent the earlier part of the evening in downtown proper, and perhaps we should have just walked as it took 10 minutes to find a parking spot (in a part of Providence notorious for car vandalism). Â Now, I'll cut to the chase. Â There was an obese patron on the ground in the doorway, and no one except his buddies were trying to get him up. Â No bouncers? Â We should have turned around, but we did try to get in, but were not allowed entry. Â It was 1:10 AM, and this was because, "we hadn't been there earlier." Â WHAT??!! Â Then to add insult to injury, the guys behind us who also hadn't been there earlier (we asked) were allowed in because they knew the door man. Â SCREW THIS PLACE.
Review Source:I came to Mirabar on a slow night just to check it out, since I'd never been inside. I was shocked to find that it had multiple floors and was much more nicely decorated than most clubs I've been to. I'm not sure I'd be able to handle it on a busy night, but the 3rd floor was an ideal place to relax with my friends on a weeknight.
Review Source:Definitely two huge steps up from Club Gallery at the south end of Richmond St. in the Jewellery District, and it can be a really fun place if there is the right mix of people. Â I`ve been here 4 or 5 times since 2008.
It's in a very depressing building that looks like an old factory from the early 1900s. Â I think they wanted to hide the fact originally that it has been renovated into a dance club. Â From the outside, you would never think this building holds a huge, 3-floor dance club, but looks can be deceiving. Â Again, I think the origins of this gay bar are from an era in which gay men were afraid to be public with their sexuality and had to use very discreet, unassuming buildings to assemble. Â
The club is very dark and not very friendly for drinking. Â It is full of long stairways in both the front and back of the building and I can imagine that they have seen their fair share of drunken falls over the years. Â They are broken ankles/necks/legs waiting to happen. Â Someone else nailed it in their description: you can't help but wonder how many guys got cases of Hep in some of the dark recesses here in the past.
The décor is interesting but also a little depressing.  I'm not sure if it's intentional or not, but the place looks like it has not been renovated or redecorated since 1992 or 1993.  It is full of posters of gay erotica from the early 1990s and it makes me wonder if the the owners care to update their bar to reflect the great social changes that have occurred in our community over the past 20 years. Â
With that said......
It can be a really fun place! Â The guys in there are very free-spirited and if you like twinks (a term for young, boyish-looking gay men) you will be in heaven! Â They are not really my cup of tea, but they are still fun to talk to and party with. Â Their melodrama factor can be quite high though, so be prepared to do a lot of eye-rolling and be prepared to talk to other people if the melodrama begins. Â I don't care for loud and obnoxious displays of petulance and over-the-top emotion and I'm not afraid to let them know it either.
The musical selections are great. Â The music is all current and the DJs never miss a beat. Â They do nothing but help keep a lively vibe in the place.
The drinks are decent and not overpriced. Â I'm a bigger boy at 6'1" 200 lbs, but their drinks are strong enough to get me drunk. Â I think beers run $4-5 and mixed drink $6-9. Â The waits for drinks can be a little long when it is crowded though. Â I don't believe they have enough bartenders and though they try their best to keep up, it is not enough.
On the top floor, I found a pleasant surprise... a piano bar! Â It was the first time I'd ever been in a piano bar in October 2008 when I went here and it was a total blast. Â On some nights you can stand around the pianist and sing along with him/her, and on other nights, they have karaoke, which is very spirited! Â I will never forget the time on Halloween 2008 when I sang "Hung Up" by Madonna in my Royal Canadian Mountie costume. Â It was fun!
as a straight male with 2 gay friends, i don't mind going to mira if invited and free, no harassment there, doorman manny is a nice guy, bartenders down stairs remembers I'm the order 2 coronas and stand in the corner and hides guy, and always puts up  1 or 2 fingers if he sees me knowing what a customer who frequents orders is a big thing
Review Source:What can I say, I came here as a tourist with some locales.... Mirabar was my first taste of the scene in Providence, and it won me over. Â The music was excellent and I was dancing (which is something that I do not normally do). The drinks were okay, but what won me over was the 3rd floor lounge area. The pool table and piano was placed perfectly. Â I met some great new people in Providence and played a good game of pool with locales. Â
I must say the elevated part on the dance floor was my guilty pleasure. :-P
I will recommend this place to any friend whether they be straight or gay to visit this place!
So... I usually give favorable reviews. Actually, truth be told, I rarely post reviews. But the ones I do post are most often favorable.
That being said...
This place is nothing special... like really. I liked the music (some fun dancy pop remixes and a few house songs), so that's why it merited three stars. The elevated mini-stage on the dance floor is kinda fun too.
However, the guys were a bit creepy. One too many daddies (and not the Patrick Dempsey types). The building itself seems dirty--gives off the vibe that boys of nights past have contracted Hep b in the dark corners. At least that's how it made me feel. Some might say the venue has historic charm... all I have to say is that I would not want to see the place with the lights on. The drinks were whatever. (My "of-age" friend shared a couple with me when no one was looking.)
As a side note, if you're under 21, you have to check your ID at the door. At the end of the night, when you go to retrieve it, just know that they may breathalyze you if they believe you have been drinking. Apparently, if you have alcohol on your breath, they won't return your ID to you (presumably until the next day... but I'm not totally sure).
So, overall, this club was okay. Nothing more, nothing less. (Actually, maybe a little less than okay). But they played my favorite Selena Gomez remix, so I shouldn't hate on them too hard.
I like Mirabar because it attracts both boys and girls. The building's old charm and upper deck vantage of the dance floor below make it a great place for seeing the whole place at once.
The DJs must be amazing every night when they play techo remixes to Adele. Who would have thought that was possible?
The drinks were niiiiice and the staff super friendly. Â What a club.
Extremely friendly bar staff, generous drink pours, and fun entertainment (in addition to DJs, the drag queens were a hoot, though I only saw them on my way out). I visited on a really dead Thursday night, but even then I had a good time. I'd imagine that on a crowded weekend night Mirabar would be a blast.
Review Source:Probably one of the best places to go as a gay guy in Providence. The music is great, it's open every night of the week, great people, great atmosphere and the drinks....amazing of course!
I have my regular bartenders there and I don't even have to tell them what I want, they already have it made for me upon arrival.
There is some immature petty drama from time to time but all clubs have that. Get past that and you are good to go.
i love going to mirabar. i never wait for drinks very long, everyone is always in a fantastic mood, dancing their bums off. I get a lil buzz going on, shake my booty on a twink, make him think I'm into him (even though I'm really staring at the hot muscle daddy leaning against the wall, who's scopin out the chicken). It's just so damn care free, drunk and fun there!
BEWARE: if you're 6'3" like me. You're perfectly spiked hair might hit the ceiling on the dancefloor LOL
Growing up, I always thought the name of this place was Mirror Bar. (Well, I guess not growing up - more like when I was in high school.) I started going here when I was way too young, and I am half-proud, half-ashamed to admit that I can't remember if the current location is the location that I used to frequent when I was a kid. (Can anybody help me on that?) I learned many things during that period in my life at Mirabar, including how to tie a cherry stem in a knot with my tongue. Apparently, I learned many things here EXCLUDING sharpening my sense of direction.
Anyhoo, I like Mirabar in its current form. It's clean, it's spacious, and there are two floors and several nooks and crannies where one can hide out. It's not super-swanky, but it is definitely not gross or scary. Downstairs is dance party heaven complete with mostly-nekkid shot boys, and upstairs (where I spend most of my time) is a little more upscale. Dark wood, mirrors, and high-top tables make for an amazing backdrop to what I think is the best karaoke night in Providence. Hit up the top floor at the Mirabar on Friday nights, and you will witness some of the most passionate deliveries of Celine Dion ballads, the sloppiest Brittney Spears voice-mimicking homages, and some of the most fabulously-trained musical theatre voices in the state. One night that I was in attendance, I watched a VERY handsome man sing an incredibly heartfelt and well-practiced rendition of "Bed of Roses" by Bon Jovi that literally had me and all my friends crossing our legs longingly. If I remember correctly (admittedly, it is quite hazy), I think one of my friends ended up crawling to this talented gentleman on her hands and knees. He was GOOD. We all prayed he was straight. He wasn't. Shocking.
Drinks are strong, shot boys are cute, karaoke selection is wide, the lightshow on the dance floor is great, and constant thumping bass is definitely provided from the DJ. Mirabar is everything that a gay club should be. Plus (and this is a nice bonus!) they're super nice to straight ladies like me who love gay boys.
I haven't been to Mirabar for years, but we were in Providence for WaterFire with friends, so we decided to stop in. I guess I don't see the reason for a $7 cover, maybe to pay fines for having underagers in there? Oh wait, this is Buddy Cianci land, so I guess maybe to fund the third floor piano bar installation. The third floor is a nice addition, I rather enjoyed it and I think Andy and our friends did too.
Review Source:I'm not from Providence so I wasn't 100% sure what I would be getting myself into this night out. However, upon entering Mirabar I was treated to a packed lower-level with an elevated stage area. There was smoke fan and shirt-less sweaty men a plenty to be had. However, the music left much to be desired; nameless techno-ish music played the whole time. I'm more of a house and dance music person myself. I would likely attend again just plan to be more inebriated and def come with your own crew!
Review Source:I had not been to mira bar in almost four years. Now, they have a top floor with kareoke. Interesting, I suppose, but not for me. There is a middle floor as well, which looks down to the main dance floor. It was Friday night, but dead, but that's because it was boston pride, and most people were there. The music was way better than I remember. It used to be quite horrible, and with pauses and stops in between songs, or songs played twice in a row. None of that this time. Not awesome music, but not bad. Lots of drunken guys and girls.
Review Source:I don't like this place as much as I love the Dark Lady but it is a fun night out. Â I think my favorite decor touch is the gay porn playing on tvs all over the place lol. Â The piano lounge upstairs is a nice add on if you want quiet conversation but I go to the gay bars to dance! lol
Review Source:Hands down, my favorite place to go out drinking and dancing. The Boston gay scene is cold, expensive and full of self-importance, I can barely bring myself to go anywhere in Boston, whereas Mirabar has got it all: cheap drinks, better music and people you can actually hold a conversation with, no matter how many $4 vodka cranberries you've had.
I'm always brining new people, gay or straight to Mirabar, and everyone always wants to go back. Retro night's are a good time, but honestly, I've never had a bad time here, no matter what night of the week.
Mirabar isn't the classiest of joints, but that's why it's so great. It's dark, it's loud, it's packed and it's always worth the hour and a half it takes to bypass Boston and have a nice night out without the stiff upper lip.
An absolute winner, I love the space. The patrons were friendly and everyone was enjoying themselves. I wish Boston had a place like this. I danced most of the night on the center box with the boys. I must say the gay boys are much more friendlier than in Boston. I discovered the top (piano bar) floor towards the end of the night and what a pleasant surprise as it can be a refuge from the lower floors.
Review Source:This place is really cool. It's 3 levels of fun!! Never been to a gay bar in Providence so this was a bit unexpected. The place has "shot boys" roaming the premises in their underwear.
The bottom level has a center stage that everyone wants to be a part of. Everyone wants to shake their tits on it even though it's already soo packed.
The middle level has a bar and it overlooks the center stage. It gives prowlers a place to pick out their next victim. I actually thought the setup is very useful.
The third level is setup like a lounge area where ever one just mingles and sing karaoke. Good place to relax and just hang out.
The trash factor is through the ROOF here!! First time ever was the friday after Thanksgiving. I needed to dance off my turkey and stuffing. Perfect. As I sauntered down the street...i was beyond confused as to where the fuck this place was. A door was opened, we went up the stairs, i felt like I was in some mafia scene. However then i heard P!nk playing and knew I was in good hands.
At first glance, this place looked like a converted barn....with christmas lights. Much like a scene out of White Christmas...but homosexual. The drinks are STRONG and cheap. I loved it. Totally beats the prices anywhere in boston and SF. When you have great music and strong drinks...you end up with me on a box dancing. Needless to say it was a fun night. To top it off the boys walking around with the shots are very fun. OH! super cheap cover too.
Also be sure you check up the third floor and watch the karaoke before you get to drunk to walk up and down the stairs. Drunk gays singing "You Raise Me Up" is PRICELESS. Whod oesnt love some Josh Groban at a gay  bar.
Horrible dance music but what can you expect its a gay bar. Â Cheap drinks in the early evenings. Â There is a small but friendly after work crowd. Â This joint can get packed as the evening goes on. The music get louder and more insipid as the night goes on. Â There is a seperate bar on the thrid floor. Â Seemed okay but kind of boring. Â I guess for a club its pretty good, too bad the music is so horrible.
Review Source:So this place is like a pillar of gay life in providence, it's true there are other bars, but like Irene said, this is the only one that can really be considered a club (oh yick I forgot about the Eagle, but you'll be better off if you do too), and it's also all gay all the time, woot.  So the music is gay, duh, that's what you get at gay bars. It's all house remixes of various gay/pop songs, whatever if it has a beat I'll beat it.  Nights during the week are touch and go, tuesday used to be the good weekday night to go, but now it's wednesday, because retro will always be chic. And despite what little miss Merri L. says, they don't stop the music mid song, ever, or play the same song twice.  Thats what you get for listening to a girl about a gay bar.  So, ya if you're a twink, you will fit nicely in with the crowd, and probably get laid if you want (you naughty little minx you), AND if you're looking for twinks this is where you should go.  One of the newer things about mirabar is the addition of the third floor piano bar.  Barry Russo rocks it out multiple nights a week playing all sorts of songs  you just want to sing along to (or slur, oh man I love sweet caroline).  It's a great environment up there because you can actually hear what your silly gay friends are saying, also if the first two floors get hot and humid, which they do to the extent that it will be freezing outside and you could steam asparagus inside, mmmmmmm asparagus..............
aaaanyway it's a great place to go and it's always busy during the weekend.
rock out with your c*ck out fellas
Wow...I can't believe I haven't written a review of Mirabar. Â I went their for some many of my years in MA. Â The club is very fun some nights and very dead the others! Â It's my friends favorite club. Â We usually go their on Saturdays! Â The club also is near the university so the bois might come over and its cheap. Â Go check it out. Â Tell everyone I said hi. =p
Review Source:I love going to shake it here. I am pretty sure it's the only gay club in Providence, but if that's not the case, it's the only one worth going to. The music is awesome, and the two floors make it fun to run around. The drinks are also pretty cheap, although it helps when your hot gay friends know the bartenders! More so, the people who go there are super friendly, not competing for sex like in a lot of New York spots (cough cough, do you hear me, Heaven??)
