If you're local and you are hunting for your "spot" this may well be a contender. The people that work here know all the regulars and their entire life stories. Just a relaxed community vibe who love to welcome new comers. When Jeff picked out some tunes on the jukebox people were coming over and complementing his choices which I thought was just awesome. We place our food orders and played a round of pool while we waited. Full bar, an expansive menu for such a small location, and food was pretty good. Nothing gourmet, but also not limited to your average bar food either.
Review Source:I visited this establishment on a Sunday afternoon after learning from a friend that they serve $1 Blue Moons from 2pm - 7pm. I hustled over there because it was already six o'clock - I wanted to take advantage for as long as possible.
Once I walked in MJ's had a very club-like feel to it, since the music was loud and danceable. It seemed a little run-down but overall the place was clean with plenty of seating, a long bar, a few televisions and a couple of pool tables.
I met up with a big group who was already there and the $1 Blue Moons were served in 8 oz. plastic cups. But if you order two at a time it gets pretty interesting.
Our waiter was very nice and accommodating, so I instantly felt at home. Rounds kept coming and during the Happy Hour they had specials on their appetizers. I didn't have dinner yet so I ordered an entree, Chicken Cordon Bleu with fries, and it was delicious. The chicken was actually composed of chicken strips, but they were fried just right without being dry, and even though the ham wasn't inside (served on top of the chicken with the cheese) all the items complemented each other well.
Overall I have no complaints. MJ's looks kinda like a dive, but with plenty of good food, beer and great service I left happy. I'd recommend it to anyone in Norfolk who doesn't want to hit up a chain. Â JV
This review will be a work in progress because I intend on the folks at MJ's getting to know my face. Â We've been there three times so far.
First time: appetizers - fried shrimp (too much batter) Â and mozzarella sticks (yum!)
Second time: Friday during Lent. Â I think it was like $8 for fish and chips. Â Portions were Â
generous and take was there too, so I left happy.
Most recently - Cinco de Mayo: Burrito (meh) but it was $2! Â And hubby had an awesome steak sandwich.
I must say they have great prices and good food. Â The atmosphere is comfortable and staff is always friendly. Â One of the big pluses for me is that they are constantly updating their facebook page.
I'm a big fan of seeing what special a place has going on that day online before we head out and we've been known to choose to eat out solely based on a facebook status!
Oh, and free wi-fi! Â Always a perk for yelpers.
My first foray here was Valentine's Day. Both of us opted for the Jumbo Shrimp (fried). They arrived delicately breaded and cooked to perfection.
For my second visit I had the Chicken Norfolk, a dish created especially for this venue. A blackened chicken breast with a tasty cream sauce and bits of country ham. Yum. Â My third visit was a Thursday and I chose the NY Strip special with French Fries. Not massive portions, but quite ample and, best of all, delicious. Oh, and lest I forget, the French Fries are sublime. On my fourth visit Chicken Parmigiana was the choice. Again, the breading was deftly handled, the meat plump and succulent, served over a bed of Angel Hair pasta with a pleasing Marinara sauce.
The menu is limited, but a disclaimer says that it will expand. My hope is that ambition for greater variety does not impede the quality that has been established in a relatively short time. The overall ambience is that of a cozy neighborhood eatery, where friends gather to enjoy a good meal for the right price and the conviviality that naturally follows.
After a nice long day of running around, we decided to check out the MJ's for a beer and a couple appetizers. Â It's in the old Tabb's location in Riverview. Â
Nice bar, a couple pool tables, nothing fancy, but comfortable. Â We settled on the Buffalo Chicken Dip and Wisconsin Cheese/Beer Soup. Â Both were fantastic. Â
We were as impressed with the prices as we were the offerings, very reasonable (read: we will be back) I saw a burger being delivered to a neighboring table, so my next trip is already planned. Â The waitress also mentioned that they have daily specials. Â Today was pork chops, the other day was a NY Strip and a side for $7, sorry I missed that one...and apparently Tuesday is taco night. Â All that and O'Conner on tap.
