A Irish bar with a bluegrass band playing out side made me stop to see what the heck was going on here. Â Since I make the banjo sound funny from time to time, I had to listen to the bluegrass. Â They were good, the lady singer sounded like Allison Krause and the banjo picker was terrific. Â I had a Guinness and enjoyed the atmosphere. Â Worth stopping.
Review Source:Really good food! We usually go for drinks. The bartenders are cool and don't let college kids use fake I.D.'s"! They have a pool table, corn hole, megatouch games with plenty of bar seating as well as outdoor. The decor is nice and they have separate bathrooms for men & women with mulitple toilets. They pour a stiff drink too. The music is cool until it gets a little later and a d.j. starts spinning all the same stupid music with the same stupid beats.
Review Source:If you're ever near Market Street and want to just move one block away (maybe not even that far) for some good food and a little quieter atmosphere than Molly Darcy's is a great option. Â The biggest issue we had by far on our last visit was the service behind the bar...for a bar that's not nearly as busy as other places in town to make you stand there for over 10 minutes every time you want to order a beer is ridiculous. Â That's really my only dislike about this place but it was almost bad enough for our entire group that we were considering moving on. Â The outside decks both front and back are great areas to sit outside and enjoy people watching. We happened to meet the General Manager during our last visit and she was extremely friendly and cordial...even bought us a round of shots. Â I hope that they can speed up their service process, otherwise we may not be making too many trips here again.
Review Source:I love sitting on the deck and people watching. That is honestly why I give it 3 stars because of the location. Chill, catch a buzz, eat some pricey food, then head next door to big johns.
When I walk in the only Molly Darcy employee I spoke to was the door guy. The next time was after I stood at a non busy bar for 15 20 minutes. A simple order of fries when they weren't busy (emphasizing again) took FOREVER. Expensive too.
Great music. Great conversation with people around us. Two pluses!
Drinks ordered at the bar were good, but sat down to have lunch and were not given a server; had to hunt one down after about 10 minutes, then the food took over an hour. Â We may have ordered more drinks, but not on an empty stomach, so fail on their part. Â Everyone in the restaurant was complaining and some walked out. Â We thought they had someone quit in the kitchen or some other major problem to cause such ridiculously bad service, but reading these reviews makes me think this is normal for them. Â The owners were there but clearly not doing anything to remedy the situation. Â They offered no compensation (nor did we ask) or anything to entice us to return. Â This restaurant might be okay for drinks only but they appear to be a tourist trap that doesn't care if they ever see you again. Â Disgraceful!
Review Source:Charleston has so many great bars/restaurants.....this is not one of them. Â We ordered a couple of beers and some nachos when we visited on a Saturday night. Â The beer was fine, and the nachos were average.
The real killer was the lack of service. Â Our server (aka Ramathorne), was a ghost. Â Our food/drink took a very long time to get to us after we ordered (food was also not how we ordered it). Â We constantly saw our server walking into the back room and never coming out with anything, as well as just standing around. Â The place was not even that crowded. Â
Eventually we just wanted to pay the check and get back to enjoying the city, but that took even longer to get and pay than the food took to order and eat.
I am guessing everyone's server experience won't be as bad as ours was, but this place was average at best. Â A bad server was just the nail in the coffin.
This place had things I liked, things I was meh about.
Should I do a compliment sandwich? Â Nah...I think I'll start with the bad and finish positively.
I hate when I walk in some place, and am no greeted. Â No hostess in sight, bar tender doesn't look up...I think it's just poor form. Â Do you want me here? Â Little did I know, there was ONE SERVER for the ENTIRE RESTAURANT. Â I felt bad for being annoyed because I did not discover this until much later in my meal. Â
I'm told to sit where ever we like and we're greeted by the same person to told me to do whatever the hell I wanted. Â I think his name was Joe, and he was super friendly. Â We order our drinks, and a fiscal year goes by. Â Joe returns carrying, oh, 500 drinks, and apologetically says, "I also have five tables inside - I am so sorry." Â Whoa dude, you shouldn't be sorry, your management should be ashamed of themselves! Â There was us, plus a table of eight plus two other tables outside, a stacked inside, no hostess for crowd control. Â That's just not a nice thing to do to Joe.
Other major yuck: a flight is $8.50. Â Maybe 12oz total of beer, and it was :::Peter Griffin voice::: EIGHT FREAKIN' DAWLERS. Â That was so dumb.
Moving on.
$4 sangria was TITS! Â So good.
We both got the steak sandwich and I'm pretty sure they gave us sirloin - it was perfectly rare, well seasoned, tender, right amount of cheese and onions, the fries were awesome, too. Â I am a VERY big fan of the food.
So, I will most certainly be back, but will make sure poor Joe has some help so I can soak up the rays and knock back a few more than I was able to.
We stopped here yesterday, after finding out that our first foray to the Tattooed Moose was to be thwarted by a long wait (and empty stomachs). Â I didn't head inside, as we ate on the front patio, but my wife said that it was very nice. Â The patio itself was nice - decently spaced tables, a couple palms, and a little fountain/fish pond (that looks like it needs some work). Â The beer list trends towards the macroswill, with few local or craft beers. Â Regardless, I ordered a flight of 4 oz pours, which included Guinness, Harp, Smithwick's, and Magner's cider. Â
Unfortunately, they only had one guy serving the entire restaurant, including the outside patio, so service was fairly slow. Â I'd say we waited a good fifteen minutes for our first round of drinks, but once our food actually got there, the server was on top of us, checking in. Â Kinda weird.
Anyway, we both ordered the steak sandwich, rare, and in my opinion, this sandwich is the sandwich by which all others should be judged. Â Huge chunks of sirloin that were super tender and well seasoned, with a good amount of cheddar cheese, on a kaiser roll, and everything was cooked perfectly rare. Â I can't say enough about how good this sandwich is. Â Seriously. Â My mouth is watering, wanting another. Â My wife had fries with her sandwich, while I tried the cole slaw. Â The fries were decent, but not great, and the slaw was standard pre-made food service slaw. Â I wouldn't order it again. Â But jeez, that sandwich. Â I'll go back here, just for the sandwich.
Oh, last thing - Any restaurant/bar that plays Flogging Molly gets an extra star from me. Â The music was great, and I'd love to go back when they have live music outside!
I was impressed with this place. The decor is pretty awesome, the bar is unique. They have a kind of private pool room in the back, a couple foosball tables, cornhole on the patio which also has another bar. My boyfriend and I had excellent service here, the bartender was actually Irish, from county kerry, which was awesome. we had irish coffees, some jameson and a couple beers. they had a good selection of irish beers on tap. We came back later in the evenings and they had a band, which kicked ass as well. definitely recomment this place.
Review Source:Came to Charleston for the weekend with 3 kids. This was the best restaurant we went to hands down. (Including fine dining service 3 nights in a row while we had a sitter). Our server was fabulous, the food was great, (we sat inside the bar area on a Monday night) there's a foosball table that the kids enjoyed, and the music was loud enough that I didn't feel like the kids were bothering anyone. If we lived in Charleston, I'm sure this is the restaurant we would frequent most often!
Review Source:Don't waste your time or money! Could be a cool hangout but they have overpriced drinks and really rude staff. Went for a football game, they have lots of TVs but had only two games playing. Got lots of attitude and told to wait before they would be bothered to put the Carolina Panthers on any TV. Got to see the last five minutes of the first half.
Went someplace else for the second half.
great location and patio was busy, i didnt eat their but the food looked good and like i said the patio was PACKED on the weekend with hungry customers. The staff was friendly and we had a great time chatting with the bartenders. good pub and worth checking out, especially if your a pub guy like myself. cheers!
Review Source:Great bar; horrible customer experience!! Friends and I were looking for a laid back bar to have a few drinks with friends that were in town. The 10 min. Closing warning was sounded, so my friends and I were finishing the last quarters of our drinks when the floor manager comes running by yelling for us to get out. I said no problem, I would like to finish my drink, the floor manager proceeds to run over and literally pulled the drink out of my hand. We are not college students and were not being belligerent. I recommend avoiding this establishment for a night out.
Review Source:Ended my first night here on my mini vaca this weekend on thursday night. The colleges definitely define the crowds you will find at the bars in the lower part of the city, I really don't mind that however because the girls are bangin(lets hope my girlfriend never sees this). However I did enjoy myself, had a slew of irish beers, which is a plus for an irish pub. Elevated dance floor area for the ladies to show what they got, and an outdoor patio to enjoy the wonderful 70's weather of spring in downtown Charleston. As far as drinking establishments go, this place is right in the middle of the pack in terms of the amount of fun and debauchery I took part in while on a wonderful weekend visit.
Review Source:Can't give a very honest review of this place- I came here first at night, for college night (25 cent beers--Holy Shnikes!). As many places in Charleston, there was no short supply of beautiful women, although I would consider this a freshman bar. When I went back a couple of days later during the daylight, the scene was much different; it was actually a Irish Pub as advertised. Didn't eat, just had to pick up my forgotten debit card (that in itself should let you know how much fun I had while there).
Review Source:Went for brunch on Saturday around lunch time. Although the food was good - I would say average I cannot give more than 1 star. The bartender was the most unfriendly, incompetent server I have ever encountered.
With only 3 others at the bar, our Mimosas took about 10 min, when ordered brunch he asked "what kind of bacon, Irish or American", we replied, "what is the different" - him: "I have no idea, no differences I guess"
Us and the couple beside us both were left with all our dirty plates, etc while he walked around aimlessly.
He never once asked how we were or anything.
TERRIBLE SERVICE/BARTENDER - my comment leaving was I actually couldn't believe a manager/owner would allow someone as unfriendly/incompetent/rude to be behind their bar.
I was really really impressed with this place. Â It has a nice, private courtyard area in the front, and a two-man band was playing outside in this area when we visited at 7pm on Sunday evening. Â No one was out in the courtyard at that time, though, because it was just too darn hot. Â I felt bad for the guys; they sounded pretty decent, especially considering you're getting free live entertainment. I wish there was a way they could pipe in the exterior sound system (the live music) into the restaurant, but alas. Â At least the music inside was a good mix, too.
The interior is spacious, with plenty of tables and seating at the bar. Â I spotted a small game alcove with some arcade games and a pinball machine. The decor seemed appropriate for their Irish vibe (dark woods and a classic pub look), and yes, the bathrooms are VERY impressive. Â They were definitely something you'd expect to see at an upscale restaurant, not just your run-of-the-mill Irish pub. Â
It was happy hour, so I ordered some specials-- an Irish Punch and later, a Sangria. Both were a great deal ($4, and $3, respectively) and a good size. Â The husband ordered an IPA and fish and chips. Â The fish and chips were perfect. Â Two large breaded and fried white fish fillets, with a tasty tarter sauce and thick-cut fries. Â I ordered a house salad and a bowl of the potato leek soup. Â They were both a good value for the price, and the soup came with two thick pieces of Irish soda bread, to boot. The soup and salad were both delicious. Â I make my own potato leek soup and Irish soda bread at home, and I must say, theirs was even better (I'm part Irish/Scottish; I know how they are supposed to taste). Â The soup was rich and creamy. Â I only wish the salad had come with some fresh button mushroom slices to really round it out.
John was our server, and he did a superb job. Â He was there when we needed him, and yet didn't bug us when he was not needed. Â This is the first restaurant I've been to in my nearly two weeks here in Charleston where the server brought out water upon our arrival. Â At no point were we waiting impatiently for food, drinks, a to-go box, or the check. Â We didn't feel rushed, yet we didn't feel neglected at any point. Â John was obviously keeping his eye on us from a safe distance and anticipating our needs.
The place wasn't busy when we went, but we had walked by it on Saturday night, and it looked pretty popular and fun. I hope they stick around for a long time; they seem like a great addition to the Charleston bar and restaurant scene.
It was an Irish pub without boxty. I wound up getting a cheeseburger (that the waitress had to ask what toppings I wanted three times...she didn't bother to write anything down). It was okay, nothing special. I'm not a drinker, but I ordered a Coke and got Pepsi without the usual "Pepsi okay?" question. The waitress kept glaring at me for some reason...not sure what I did to annoy her. :P My boyfriend got the blacked tilapia sandwich that was seasoned well (I sampled it), and his folks got fish-n-chips and chicken pot pie, which they claimed to enjoy. Their IPA selection left something to be desired (from the boyfriend's point of view), but at least it was cool inside on one of the hottest days of the summer.
Review Source:My wife and I decided to try out this new Irish pub that apparently none of the locals had been to yet. The food was great, and the staff was very friendly and accommodating. I loved to take my Guinness outside and enjoy a cigarette with the Irish music in the background. I had to remind myself I was in Charleston. There was live music, but that was less than great... they were okay at best. It might have been better if my meds had allowed me to drink more. (I would have been at the bar.) But the later it got, the more partiers arrived, and that was a little too much for us... but it is a pub after all! Highly recommended!
Review Source:This is my favorite Irish restaurant/pub in Charleston, South Carolina. Â There is a great outdoor patio seating area, more formal inside dining, and awesome bar room. Â It just opened earlier this month, and I have never been happier!! Best Fish & Chips in Charleston, at a reasonable price. Â Plus, ladies, check out the bathrooms. Â FINALLY an Irish restaurant that has nice bathrooms. Â Great decor inside, friendly restaurant and bar staff, as well as an amazing menu and beer list. Â Seriously Charleston, trust me on this one.. you will not be sorry you decided to dine/drink here!
