Are the nachos with shredded chicken & slices of jalapeños the best I've tasted, or was I just starving after being stuck in the car for am eternity on the road down from Los Angeles in Memorial Day weekend traffic? Further scientific testing will tell, but I can tell you that sipping on a blueberry bramble next to the cozy outdoor fireplace is my idea of a relaxing time.
The fish tacos were not nearly as good, but the service was friendly and efficient.
Mustangs & Burros is a decent hotel bar. Â The ambiance with great! Â They have outdoor seating near a fireplace as well as indoor seating as well. Â The area was formerly a ranch and there are framed photos on the wall to show the ranch back in the day. Â
My friend and I ordered drinks and the chicken nachos. Â The chicken nachos didn't disappoint, but they weren't the best around (meaning I wouldn't mind having them, but also I wouldn't drive from the farthest places in San Diego for these nachos). Â When our order of nachos came to the table, plates were not provided. Â We had to wait for our server to come back and request them from him. Â I had a martini and it was appropriately made with the right amount of "strong". Â
At the end of it all, our server kept trying to rush us with the bill. Â We couldn't enjoy relaxing at the hotel bar. Â Ironic because all of the other areas of the hotel promote a slower-paced, relaxed time. Â It annoyed me because we were ordering food and drinks while sitting there. Â
Aside from ambiance and convenience, I wouldn't really return to Mustangs & Burros. Â Good to check out if in the area, but even when staying at the hotel, I would get bored of the scene (and tired of the less than stellar service) after one night.
For a hotel restaurant, it's not a bad spot. The drinks are great, and the beer selection is good. The food isn't outstanding, and we really go for the ambiance. I wouldn't order a pricey entree because you wouldn't be getting your money's worth, but it's a nice spot if you can walk over, grab a 22oz Double Shaka IPA, and have a salad, a burger or some nachos by the fireplace. If you have to sit inside, I'd skip it, as it's noisy and tables are too close together.
