I've been stopping by here for Gyros for years as they have the best ones in the neighborhood. (I cant say anything about the other food choices as I have never tried anything else). Â I tend to basically have a craving for a gyro once in a while, and if I go anywhere else I'm always disappointed as I compare it to the ones I get here.
It's not too cheap (about $7 for a gyro with fries) but they really pack it in there. I hate places that give you like 4 slices of meat (sometimes just grilled lol).
I was starving, and was going to go to Natalie's, but they are closed on Sundays. So, I instead went to Nick's, a place I hadn't been to in years. There was only one other customer in there. Nick took my order and was very cordial. I ordered a burger, fries, and drink. The burger was great, reminds me very much of the burgers from Mr. Zee's. The fries are crinkle-cut and unsalted (you have to add the salt yourself if you want it). The fries are not spectacular. But the burger was really good, and a preseason Cubs game was on on the TV, so it was all good. After awhile, some more people began showing up so it started getting chatty in there. Overall, a good place. Not the best, but pretty good. Better than Natalie's (which is just north on Nagle).
Review Source:I hate that this place is at the end of my block and their food isn't good. I was hoping for a fast convenient place but it really isn't any good. Italian beef is disgusting! It was thick and chewy like rubber. Gyros aren't good and their soup, everytime, is like water.
Tonight, I ended up back there for another less than pleasing meal. Why? Well, its the night of the big Chicago winter storm and on my way to a restaurant on Harlem, every street light and business lost power(on Harlem). I was ready to just go home and unfortunately he suggested just going here since we didn't have anywhere else.
Do yourself a favor and don't waste the $25. If you want great beef, go to Mr. Beef at Irving park and Harlem.
Good greasy food, but guy behind the counter obviously doesn't like people. This is your typical Greek fast food place. There are plenty of tables for their busy lunch time. However, the young guy who works behind the counter always seems bothered by everyone who walks in. Maybe he's Nick Jr., and hates his job... who knows. The food is just OK, so they should do something about the attitude situation to keep people coming back.
Review Source:This place is my favorite place to go for Itallian Beef, it's sooo good! Â And they get bonus points for having skirt steak. Â However, the place is always empty and I don't think the rest of the food is all that wonderful, I know the fries are just so-so, which for Chicago, we all know there are 50 places that have supurb fries when we crave them. Â The guy gets a little crabby often and the prices are a bit higher than most hot dog places.
Review Source:Places like this remind me of my dads when I was younger, a greek resturaunt where the food was good...I had a skirt steak sandwhich with fries and drink. Â Good, filling and made me sleepy.
Cashier was tlakative and the other funny thing was that one of the spanish guys working there used to work for my dad back in the day. Â So added nostalgia. Â Flat screen tv in there was nice if you wanted to relax.
On the NW corner in a small strip mall with a subway there and across from the CVS. Â Not bad for a last minute stop. Â Don't remember if they have breakfast so I am not putting it down there. Â But you can call if you really want to know.
Nick's has been my favorite place in Chicago for gyros and Greek Chicken for going on 20 years. Â They used to be on Crawford, but then I started going to their Harlam and Nagle locations. Â
The food is always fresh and consistently good! Â Its fast food, but the quality easily rivals and exceeds "sit down fare" that is 2-4 times the price.
Nick, don't every change a thing!
PS Chili Cheese Dogs are some of the best tasting anywhere as well
This review is for THE GYROS ONLY.
So I was in the neighborhood and kinda hungry. Â I pulled over and asked this guy who looked like lead singer of Def Leppard, "Yo, where's a decent place to eat ova he?" He suggested Nick's but warned me that it was expensive. Â It actually was pricey for a fast food joint, but you get what you pay for.
I ordered a gyros sandwich to go. Â The only other place I'd grab a gyro is Hub's, but now I have two places. The meat was perfectly cooked, not thrown on the grill to finish it off (I HATE PLACES THAT DO THAT!) and really, really tasty. Â It was a little over $5, but it was well worth it. Heck, it may be worth the drive back to Norwood Park!
I was again at Resurrection Hospital, but I needed to obtain a CTA transit pass on swift notice. I knew the closest place I could get one was a CVS Pharmacy store.
There are _two_ CVS' near the intersection of Foster, Higgins, & Nagle. The one in the former Golden Flame restaurant location _does not sell them_. The one which was the former Osco one block east of it _does_.
After obtaining the pass, I opted to eat here at Nick's.
I elected to opt for the gyros combination meal ($7.35).
The two-star rating is solid.
The gyros got cold [temperature] rather swiftly. There was a lot of meat though. The french fries were institutional (crinkle-cut), and needed ketchup. However, they were also unsalted, which is unusual for a stand like this.
I think the prices here are artificially high because, for some bizarre reason, it has a flat screen television subscribed to Comcast cable.
This venue *does not need* cable television. It is not a destination in and of itself. You're going to spend a maximum of forty minutes in here, if you eat in here (I did).
Concentrate on the food, please. Cook the gyros on the roll so that it doesn't get cold that quickly. Disconnect the cable, and lower your prices accordingly. I probably will not be back here again.
Transit options: The #88 Higgins bus runs here all the time the venue is open. The #86 Narragansett bus runs only weekdays until 9:35 pm.
Nick's has really good food (especially the cheese fries), but there are definitely better options out there. Â The owner and his son (usually working the register) can be rude and pretentious, and if you're a female eating in, the cooks will often stare and talk about you in Spanish (yes I understand it).
For the price, it's good, but it's a relatively mediocre place.
Mmm.
HUGE menu. Huge Portions. Teeny Prices. Never super-duper crowded. This is my favorite Nicks location.
I never thought the gyro plate on paper was a weird thing, as mentioned below... I mean, its a gyro place. The whole plate costs you like 6 bucks... hmm. Anyway, Gyro plate is my FAVORITE: comes with fries, tzatziki, onions, pita, and meat. Order extra pitas (cheap) and it can EASILY feed 2 people.
They do not have chicken gyros if that is your thing, but they DO have, like, everything else, all huge portions.
The food is greasy... I want to point out that it is called "Nicks GYROS". Not "Nicks Health Food". That is all.
This is a nice little place to get some good fast food. Â Plenty of seats, tvs and a down to earth atmosphere. Â The Greek chicken dinner special is very good in both quality and price (about $6). Â They also sell gyros, beef sandwiches, dogs and a whole lot more. Â Huge menu, small parking lot (within a strip mall).
