I was a very big fan of this sushi place because I thought staffs were nice and place was neat. I enjoyed delicious maki and other dishes. However, one day, the server spill the full glass of iced water on my dress. My bottom part was wet for whole time I was eating. The server said sorry for couple times. That was it... i mean... My parents even gave them a tip. Â Another day, I visited this place again because my brother wants to eat dragon roll
We ordered a full size dragon roll and the WHOLE plastic waste was found. I know that the plastic is probably from eel packing stuff. The plastic size was about the iphone. I regret that i did not take picture of it and upload to my facebook or something. Server let us eat anyway after they took the plastic away. And they still charge for the dish. I just paid the total amount and left zero tip. They did not say anything when we leave. The point here is that ... you may not get any compensation even though you were served awfully. Hate this place. Bitterly disappointed.
What a great sushi place! Â The restaurant is convenient for lunch and not too crowded before 12/12:30 during the typical lunch rush. Â The dining room is pretty small in general and it's certainly has basic decor. Â That doesn't matter much as the food is excellent - especially the fish which is fresh and tasty!
There are several lunch options available for sushi and rolls as well as other typical Japanese dishes. Â They are reasonably priced between $10-15 - which would include a roll and 4 pieces of sushi. Â There house rolls are OK - I've made my way through much of the list and there are some great ones - the dynamite roll and other no-so-great - the Galapagos roll. Â It depends on your taste and expectations in terms of flavor and texture. Â The common theme is that the fish is fresh and their rice is also made properly which adds to the flavor of the sushi and rolls.
Highly recommend Noburi for a no-frills solid sushi option in the north suburbs.
I went in during lunch and had the sushi lunch special. Â I had no issues getting a seat at the bar. Â And the food was very good considering this was in IL. Â (I've had better sushi in CA and NJ.) Â Normally, I'd give this place 4 stars, but since this is the best sushi I've had in IL, I'm giving it 5 stars.
(Sorry for the short review; I actually eat here about a year ago and forgot to submit my review. Â I haven't been back since only because this place is a bit out of my way.)
Literally the best sushi I've had in the Chicago area. Grew up in Glenview, moved to Rogers Park for college. As soon as that happened I got extremely frustrated with the quality of sushi in the city. I miss Nobori being 5 minutes away from home and not 30 mins of highway traffic.
Nobori has fresh fish and their specialty rolls are amazing. Each one that I have tried has a generous serving of fish, and their tempura isn't greasy. The Chicago fire roll is one that I cannot compare any other roll to. My other favorites are the rainbow roll with shrimp tempura, the orange roll, and the Hawaiian roll.
The owner is so nice and friendly. I always feel comfortable when I walk in, regardless if I dine in or carry out.
The one complaint I have is that it is pricey for the specialty rolls (at least on a full time student part time nanny salary). But once you've had great sushi, the $9 specialty roll in the city seems like a complete joke, for me similar to if Harold and Kumar were not able to get white castle at the end of the movie. The specials are great though, but I am not always around to take advantage of them. Â
I've been spoiled by Nobori completely and go there anytime I go home to visit my parents.
I went there on a weekday evening with my cousin for a quick dinner, and quick it was. We had 4 different kinds of rolls, big and small, and I also had the buckwheat noodle dish. I forget what they called it. It might have been soba. Anyways, I asked for it cold and he looked at me like, 'it's always cold'. And I looked at him like 'there's a dish right above it that says soba, hot or cold"
ARGH I hate it when restaurants think you should know everything about their menu. Uhhh NO. If we knew everything about YOUR menu, it'd be MY restaurant! Doofus.
Anyways, the roll I had... Can't remember it for the life of me was fabulous. The soba, not so much. And sushi is sushi. There's bad sushi and there's GREAT sushi. This place was... okay. Fresh but not 'yesterday swimming'. Decoration was okay. Server was okay. Everything was okay. I'd go there more out of convenience than anything else.
I loved their ramen where the noodles are cooked perfectly and the broth is warming and flavorful. Â Not overly salty and comes with bamboo shoots, seawood and one slice of fish cake. Â There's only one choice of ramen, which is too bad. Â
Sushi is always fresh but don't be surprised the rolls are very small. Â
Great service for lunch and dinner. Â Didn't see a kids menu.
What a surprise! I am not a fan of strip mall sushi restaurants, but Nobori Sushi exceeded my expectations! They have some of the freshest fish I have ever had that doesn't come with a heavy price tag. Â Their sashimi is amazing and the Chicago Fire Roll is to die for. Â The restaurant itself is nothing special, but it is very convenient in the fact that parking is ample, there is rarely a wait, and the service is perfect. Â If you are craving fresh, delicious sushi that doesn't break your bank try Nobori!
Review Source:Sorry Nobori, but you have been going downhill the last couple years to the point that I will no longer be a regular here. Â You've raised prices (including the weekend lunch specials) and reduced the quality and freshness of all the fish. Â Your salmon is always chewy now. Â I'm rounding up from 2.5 stars because your service is still good.
Review Source:I have to admit, the BF and I are regulars here. Â We can't seem to go more than a couple weeks without craving Nobori Sushi. Â And how did we stumble upon this amazing little gem of a restaurant? Â Some coupon we found online a couple years ago. Â We don't even bother with the coupons anymore because they are not applicable towards specials and their specials are better deals.
First and foremost, if you are used to trendy sushi places run by non-Japanese people with sushi rolls that are more show than food, then this is not the place for you. Â If you are looking for fresh sushi where the fish is the main event and typically served to you by the Japanese owner himself, then this is the right place. Â I lived in California for nearly 10 years. Â This place is just as good, if not better, than my favorite sushi places right on the Pacific Ocean.
The best part about their sushi is that they don't vinegarize their sushi rice. Â Why is this great? Â Because you can actually taste the fish! Â And why do they want you to taste the fish? Â Because it's fresh! Â I find that most other places that overuse vinegar in their sushi rice do so because they use fish that lacks flavor (i.e. previously frozen or low grade fish) or even tastes fishy. Â At Nobori - they don't try to hide the flavor of the fish and instead showcases its freshness and flavor. Â I personally love their yellowtail and white tuna...fabulous. Â Their tempura is also very good.
My BF likes their other kitchen items and wants to buy bottles of their teriyaki sauce. Â He alternates between the beef and chicken teriyaki and he says both are very tasty. Â And for the people who don't like seaweed wrap, they can substitute pink soy paper in its place which is what my BF prefers.
All in all, it's a great authentic Japanese sushi restaurant. Â Yes, it's inside a strip mall, but the quality is better than anything I've eaten in the Chicagoland area. Â It also can get a little pricey, but you're paying for quality. Â We have about 10 sushi restaurants closer to our home, but we choose the drive the extra miles just to go to Nobori. Â It's really that good.
We had excellent takeout last night. Â Exciting because this place is right up the street from us. Â I think they need to redo their takeout menus because only the prices for the special rolls are listed, which makes this place seem too expensive. Â In actuality, you only need a half size of their special rolls; and their regular rolls are very fairly priced. Â We will definitely hit this place up for many times to come.
Review Source:It was very difficult to pick out a decent restaurant in the suburbs that my friend and I could both agree on.
Since neither of us have tried Nobori before, we decided to give it a try as our meeting location.
It was a week night so maybe it was pretty quiet, which I liked since we can actually talk with normal voices.
Just decent food and service ...
My friend had the don kat su and I had the ramen and a spicy salmon roll.
Nothing really stood out for me but I would go back, since it's hard to find a decent and authentic Japanese restaurant in this part of town.
This place has been here forever and I tried it when I was young. Back then it was not too bad because I didn't know any better. But after going there recently, I know now to not go again. Its a Japanese restaurant that is managed by Koreans.
I ordered a lot of sushi rolls and what I got was disappointing. The rice to fish ratio was horrible. There was more rice than fish and the rice overwhelmed the taste of the fish.
Another problem was the service. We were trying to figure out what to get and the waitress comes over and asks us if we are ready and we said no. We ask her for a couple more minutes and she says okay and goes off and does something else. Not even 30 seconds later she comes back and asks us if we were ready and we said no again. Then comes back again in 30 seconds and asks if we were ready... I don't know what type of people they hire but they should check if they are capable enough to listen to what the customer is saying.
After that incident, our order takes about 35 minutes to come out. We got a complimentary side dish of seaweed salad with some cucumber..... I'm Korean and I know this is probably the cheapest thing to make there. They apologized so that is the only reason they got a 2 star.
I will not be returning here again when there are better, authentic Japanese restaurants.
The proprietor was formerly the GM at Akai Hana on Lake and when he first started out, he was all about customer service and making a name for himself. "Now he's up in the big leagues, Gettin' his turn at bat" and he is all about business. We recently went in and while the food is very good, we seemed a little rushed and almost an inconvenience.
Regardless, we will go back because we enjoy the food.
The Chicago Fire roll was great! Â
The Nobori roll was very interesting with the mango on top but pretty good. Â
The chicken in the chicken teriyaki combo was kind of dry, but the sprouts that it came with was good. The combo was a good deal because you get a soup (or salad), 3 pieces of sushi, a California roll, plus ice cream for dessert! Â
Our waiter was very nice and attentive.
We had a $25 http://restaurant.com certificate so we got the 2 rolls and a chicken teriyaki combo for $50.95 before tax and tip. We spent about $38 in the end. Â Good deal for good sushi, but we won't be coming back because it's a bit far for us.
If you're looking for a romantic evening at a place with ambience, this isn't the place. But if you like to eat fresh, traditional sushi, in a no-frills place, go to Nobori.
My first time (definately not my last) visit, I shared multiple rolls and dishes with two other guests. My favorite was the red dragon roll, which is a california roll topped with red ahi tuna. We also had the white dragon roll which is just like the red dragon roll, but is topped with white tuna, hence the name.
Other highlights include the spicy soft shell crab roll, shrimp tempura roll and the chicken teriyaki. I usually order chicken teriyaki at other restaurants and this is easily the best I've ever had. All white meat and not overly drenched in sticky, sugary sauce, like most places have. Not sure what the yakitori is because most places chicken yakitori and chicken teriyaki are the same thing. Tempura rolls are large and filling.
One of my restaurant-goers had the oysters and unagi (eel), which were both delicious, according to him. If I was into either dish I could verify that ;)
My only gripe is the seaweed salad is definately overpriced, $7 for half a bowl of seaweed and a mound of cucumbers is outrageous! It was ok, but for that price I should get a pasta bowl filled with it and a lemon wedge!
The http://restaurant.com certificate is the way to go! Save yourself some money and give this place a try. The location and casual atmosphere may be off-putting, but if you can get beyond that, there's a great meal inside this little restaurant.
Tucked in a small plaza in Glenview, I never would have even thought to give this place a second look. Â We were meeting someone in the area and he suggested we go to this place since we had mentioned we are big sushi fans.
We walked in and were greeted right away. Â The place is small, yet clean and efficient. Â There is no ambiance here so don't come here for that....strictly the food. Â
We started off with Miso soup which was tasty and ordered some plum wine (we like the sweet stuff). Â They don't have mixed drinks here so options are simple. We went right for the specialty rolls, since we believe that is the best way to judge the place...they are called special for a reason, right? Although....it would be kinda fun to order the unspecial or unspecific role...hmmmm...but I digress.
Anyway, we got the following:
Galapagos Roll - Tuna, Yellowtail, Avocado, Masago, Cilantro, Spicy Mayo, and Jalapeno w/ Lime Juice and Chili Oil on Top
Nobori Roll - Eel, Shrimp Tempura, and Avocado Roll with Mango and Eel Sauce on Top
Chicago Fire Roll - Crunchy; Tuna, Scallion, and Avocado Roll w/ Seared Tuna, Shirasha Sauce, and 3 kind of Tobiko on Top
Rainbow Roll w/ Shrimp Tempura - Spicy Shrimp Tempura Roll w/ Tuna, Salmon, and Yellowtail on Top
Ok...all these rolls were kick-ass!!! Really....fresh and delish! Â The presentation was good and even the ginger was fresh and tangy! We loved the combinations and the sauces. Â It was just all really good including the service (provided by the very nice owner)!!
If in the area, I highly suggest you check them out, and if you are a sushi fan...you won't be disappointed! Holla!
Their sushi rolls are definitely worth a trip. I would rather go during lunch though since they have lunch specials for about 9 bucks and it is good food. Â Got a buncha rolls carryout the other day and loved the eel and cucumber, dragon, and just plain rolls with sashimi on top. I like better than tatami down the street mostly because I don't like a lot of caviar on every roll which is tatami's trademark. I'd go again.
Review Source:Very good. My husband ordered something that I can't even describe. I forgot the name but it was a baked rice and pork dish that was to die for. Total comfort food. I ordered a very basic chicken teriyaki, which was delicious. I also had miso soup and california rolls. We were dining with the baby and wanted to keep in on the mild side. But he loves ginger and was stuffing it into his face.
Considering how much I enjoy Japanese food, we will be back. It is reasonably priced. The manager is the one who serves you. For the men there is a large flat screen TV quietly showing sports when we were there.
As often the lament, there are far too few decent sushi places in the burbs. Nobori is definitely a go to on my list for a sushi fix...it's not too trendy, loud, or attention getting, but I relish in the fact that it isn't. The owner is so kind and welcoming, he even helped us get as much food as we could to fit our http://restaurant.com coupon. The place itself is in a strip mall, and seats 20-30 people. You'll have the same roll selection here, but have a few surprises too. We went with the safe bets, the tuna/salmon etc, but i'll update once we get to try some more adventurous stuff. It's been mentioned that this place is empty feeling and not to be selfish, but hey, maybe it's good for customers and repeats like us..more for us! I hope this place does well because I've finally found a good sushi place near me...
Review Source:As a fellow sushi chef, I would love to see my friend noboru do good with his first restaurant.
Foods are always satisfying. Service is over the top. It's just feel way too empty every time I go dine in which is a little sad since they have decent food with decent price at nice neighborhood.
Maybe I bumped into there whenever they were not busy....who knows.
But hence all that, I would love to see them get busy!
Go try their miso saba yaki entree or even a appetizer. It's a must!
My wife and I absolutely love this place!!!
Our favorite sushi place in Chicagoland...and not for nothing, we have tried quite a few of them. Â The fish selection is some of the best quality that I have had, always extremely fresh and flavorful.
When it comes to rolls, I enjoy a combination of very traditional (simple negihamachi or tuna rolls are some of my favorites) and modern creative rolls. What truly sets Nobori apart is the latter. For fans of spicy I highly recommend the Chicago Fire roll, which is a wonderful melange of flavors and textures topped with eel and spicy mayo sauces...at a glance they seem far too much but when you eat a piece they all blend perfectly. This roll also has the distinction of being a nori-less roll, wrapped instead in pink soy "paper."
On the more traditional side, fans of classic sushi flavors absolutely MUST try the salmon skin (might I suggest a hand roll). Â One distinction of this place is that Noboru uses the skin from smoked salmon rather than plain, with a thin layer of flesh still on it. Â This is the salmon skin that you didn't know you were missing, but once you try some it ruins you for all other salmon skin.
As far as service: the staff (most notably the owner, Noboru) is always friendly and attentive without hovering...which is an impressive feat considering the relatively small size of the dining room.
One warning only.....Nobori Sushi is highly addictive and has been known to cause uncontrollable cases of hunger.
Reasonably priced lunch special.
Most of the time the problem with sushi places is that the food can be good, but the service can be very poor. This is not the case in Nobori Sushi where the people taking care of you are very welcoming and accommodating.
The sushi was fresh and lunch did not seem overpriced at all. Â The quality and presentation of the rolls was one of the best I have seen. Â Some of the prices do seem a little steep, but I think they are merited by the quality of the ingredients.
The decor of the place is pretty pleasing and it is conveniently located if you are ever near downtown Glenview. Â I will visit it for lunch again.
Pluses: great service, beautiful presentation of the rolls and super-delicious volcano roll.
Minuses: Â the place is SO overpriced. Â The rolls are pretty small -- and similar rolls in many of my other favorite places are $10-14... here they were $17. Â Of course, $3-7 per roll is not that much difference -- but there were a lot of us, and the check was huge; plus there wasn't really anything that made that extra investment a worthwhile one. Â There are plenty other sushi places that are more interesting/innovative, delicious and easier on the pocket. Â
Don't think I'll go back...
Prices have gone up (way up!) and quality has gone down. Â
I have to tell you that I'm wildly disappointed to have to take this off the lunch rotation. Â I am hoping it was just a bad day so maybe I'll return for another try. Â But the food was so bad on my last visit, I will need a bit of time to soften the sting.
Like: fresh ingredients used in the sushi.
Dislike: overly sticky rice.
Like: dinner combinations that include soup or salad and ice cream!
Dislike: not served in a bento box. Â Boo. Â Me likey my bento boxes.
Like: white meat chicken teriyaki.
Dislike: charcoal-gas-stove-tasting chicken. Â Peculiar.
Like: having a $25 http://restaurant.com certificate to use at dinnertime!
Dislike: steep prices. Â A plate of 5 small dumplings and a rainbow roll cost me said certificate, with tax and tip.
Like: prompt service.
Dislike: out of place flat screen tvs playing the Bachelor during dinner.
Bottom line: overpriced for the quality and quantity of food you actually get.
1) Good job asking me how I heard about your wonderful establishment (on yelp, of course where else?)
2) Ask me to write a review? Big no-no....but here goes one anyway because it was delish.
Decor (minus the linoleum-looking floor which didn't fit in) was nice and authentic (Japanese tori on the walls were a big +). The atmosphere was ok, minus one diner who was talking on the phone 20 feet away, yet somehow right in my ear....no fault of Mr. Nakamura. We were there at around 9 pm on a Friday, so I was actually surprised to see people at all.
Now, the exciting part....THE FOOD!
The sushi was fresh and delicious, no question. We weren't too hungry so we ordered the Noburu roll (usually the rule of thumb, always order the item with the restaurant name in it-right?), which is is an Eel, Shrimp Tempura, and Avocado Roll with Mango and Eel Sauce on Top (8 pcs).
Also ordered one spicy tuna (not spicy), one Philadelphia roll (not my choice as a sushi snob, but it tasted alright for a roll with cream cheese) and the dragon (eel on top of spicy cali) picture on their web site home page http://noborisushi.com/n….
Well the food was delicious, but imho over-priced. Maybe for the folks at the Glen, this is just right, but for my PR salary, this will have to be the first and last time at this sushi house. With lots of nice sushi options around (Green Tea, Renga-Tei and even the one down the block all the Russians go to) to charge $15-$17 per roll is a little steep.
The service was friendly, fast and frankly impeccable. Noboru Nakamura, the man himself, gave us a business card, a take-out menu and chatted with us for some time. He told us which sushi places around town were Japanese-owned and took credit for starting a few sushi restaurants (ranging from Akai-Hana to Green Tea). Very nice and friendly!
The bottom line, I would be back in a second if I had a larger pocket book or if they offered a groupon, let's say (some sort of deal). It was delicious, I'm actually salivating right now.
This sushi place is awesome! The rolls are fresh and delicous, filled with mouth-watering fish and not overpowered by rice (which many sushi places fail in). The salmon roll is absolutely melt in your mouth, orgasmic good. The other rolls are pretty good too and the owner is your server which other people have mentioned which I think adds a homey touch to your overall experience. What I like about this place is that the menu is huge, but I wouldn't give it all 5 stars because I think it might be a lil pricey for a suburb place. However, I will go there again just for that delicious salmon roll!
Review Source:When I first visited this establishment the food offerings were innovative and BYOB. Â Now after about a year in business the place continues to be innovative and now have a liquor license. Â I was pleased to see the choice in libations, but dismayed since I had brougnt my own bottle. Â To my delight the owner of the restaurant did not turn my bottle away, in fact the bottle was corked and the wine was light and lovely. Â
I have to say that the food is in fact very fresh and the flavors are also very tasty. Â My new favorite roll is the Hawaiin roll. Â I would not have ordered this roll had the other peeps in the group ordered, but after taking my first bite, I was hooked. Â The hawaiin roll has mango, and is wrapped in rice paper. Â Their agadashi tofu was honey sweet, soft and with just enough crunch. Â
I speak for the kids when three plates of Chicken Teriyaki was split between 6-7 kids and devoured. Â I am not much for Chicken Teriyaki myself, but the chicken breast was fork-tender, and also very flaovrful. Â Knowing my kids demanded seconds of this chicken entree deserves a thumbs up. Â
The Chicago fire roll, Galapagos roll, and the Hamachi plates were cleaned off as well as topping the night with desert of green tea and mango mochi ice cream. Â
Service was also very attentive by the owner. Â The table was always cleaned off of empty plates and hot tea and water were always replenished. Â Being able to accomodate our table of 11 and keep the kids entertained is a plus in my book.
My best friend and I tried this place because of its convenient location (half-way between her place and mine), and because I had a certificate for $25 off a $35 purchase from http://Restaurant.com. Let me just say, "WOW!" I'm a HUGE fan! Not only was the sushi fresh, creative, and delicious, but the service was outstanding.
I have NEVER, and I mean NEVER had the owner of a restaurant as my server.. but at Nobori, that's who took care of us the entire evening. And he did an awesome job! The minute we walked in the door he seated us, took our drink order, then left us to peruse the menu for a minute (literally, like a minute). He promptly returned with the drinks and asked if we had been there before.. Since we had not, he made some suggestions, one of which we actually ordered. The Chicago FIRE roll (house special) was spicy and delish, as was the Dragon Roll (different--made with spicy mayo instead of regular), and the super white tuna was the most tender I've had since visiting Hawaii. Since it was just us two girls, this was the extent of our order (with some sake and beer, of course), but the table next to us devoured a spread of at least 5 rolls and obviously enjoyed it, too!
It's great to know I have another solid choice for great sushi with fantastic service in the burbs! I will definitely be returning and suggest you give it a try, too! :)
P.S. As previously mentioned, the certificate brought us in (and saved us some $), and without it our meal would have been a bit pricey (around $65 for 2 rolls, 2 pieces, 1 beer, and 1 large sake-- not bad, but definitely a little more spendy than comparable places).. that would be my only complaint, though I'd say the freshness and service would likely make up for it!
I make it a point to eat here at least twice a week. The environment is very simple, clean and friendly. The owner Mr. Nakamura can be seen waiting on tables and talking to the guests and even one time I witnessed him going out to make deliveries! Try the Spicy Soft Shell Crab Roll, you won't be disappointed, the sea bass is perfectly marinated and oh so good. Fair prices, great people, this place can't be missed.
Review Source:I have to update. Â I keep going back and am so proud to see them doing well. Â It's so fresh and well made. Â I've been to a lot of local sushi places and have had ok sushi, but this place is superb. Â
Now they have alcohol to offer and was able to have good saki.
I recommend the Tuna Tataki for the appetizer and I haven't been disappointed by the rolls, though my personal favorite is the Chicago Fire because it's full of flavor and has the nice little tempura crunch.
They don't do a lot to make the dishes visually stunning, but the flavors make up for it.
Hurrah for another unique lunch option in Glenview! Â And a quality one, too.
They have a great lunch special--$7.95 for two rolls or $8.95 for a roll and either a noodle dish, a teriyaki dish, or a meat cutlet. Â Soup or salad included in any case.
The sushi is fresh and very tasty. Â My favorites are the yellowtail and scallion and the crunchy California (although sometimes the tempura bits are more soggy than crunchy). Â They do a pleasant presentation, too--not Picasso-level but usually something more interesting than just six cylinders on a slab.
Simply put, their udon is the best Asian noodle dish that I have had anywhere in the city or suburbs. Â So freaking good. Â Ugh, I have to stop writing these reviews before lunch...
Service notes: Â Overall, gracious and friendly, but the chatty owner hovers around the dining room during lunch, and when I am there reading, he should take that as a cue that I don't want to be bothered. Â He does remember people though and if that is your cup of tea, will be happy to speak to you at length about the community, the restaurant business, and Japanese food. Â
They screwed up one of my rolls in two of my first three visits. Â The first time was takeout and only upon reaching home did I discover a cucumber roll instead of a shitake roll. Â Ugh, a cucumber maki roll is about the boringest piece of food that I can imagine. Â Another time was in the restaurant when they gave me a regular California instead of a spicy California. Â No problems my last couple of visits though. Â
I will probably come in here at least once a month for the forseeable future.
I had a craving for sushi and suggested this new restaurant to a friend that I met for dinner. Â Ok, it was really the coupon/flyer that lured me into this restaurant in the first place but I was pleasantly surprised with the food. Â We ordered 2 a la carte rolls and 2 special rolls: Dragon Roll (which is my staple roll) and the Nobori Roll (the owner's specialty). Â It was different because it had mango and soybean paper in it. Â Sweet, savory, and delicious! Â
The owner is very friendly and we had several conversations with him. Â He has convinced me to try the Chicago Fire Roll next time. Â The place is small and cozy but nicely decorated; even the dinnerware is adorable!
