This is one of the better sub shops in the Chicagoland area. Â Everything is made right there, including the desserts. Â You take a number and order deli style at a counter. Â In addition to sandwiches, you can purchase freshly sliced deli meats and homemade sausages, side salads, meatballs and other tasty dishes. Â The meatballs are super delish, and the turtle brownie is so rich and full of carmely goodness. Â I'm conflicted about the sub. Â Yes, I would include it in my top 10 Chicago area subs, but not in the highest positions. Â The bread is fresh (a must!), and it comes with homemade dressing, but I found the flavor to be a few steps down from places like Capri Deli in Palatine, Alpine Food Shop in Elmwood Park or the Algonquin Sub Shop. Â The dressing was a bit bland, and the bread didn't have the buttery flavor I love so much. Â I wasn't at all impressed by the pasta salad. Â I think it was wearing the same dressing they use on the subs. Â It tasted like plain olive oil and some dry Italian seasoning.
Oh, by the way: I'm a sub snob, so take that into consideration when choosing where to eat your sub. Â This place IS very good.
When you go, ask for George Nottoli, the owner. He's super friendly and makes you feel totally at home. I thought I was only going to have one Italian Sausage sandwich -- but I ended up ordering a second one. I ate them both at their tables. It was sooo good. Hit the spot. Highly recommended! Family business, very clean, great food, great value, super friendly. Very traditional. The best! - ces from Northbrook
Review Source:I'm concerned that if I write more, readers will think I'm on the Nottoli & Son payroll. Â Please trust me, I'm not!
This evening, once again, I enjoyed some of their mild Italian sausage with fennel seeds that I cooked up along with red sauce & linguine. Â OMG, once again, it was great!!.
BTW, my wife and I recently tried their olive & tuna salads. Â Both were great!
Okay, if you like Italian food, you gotta go there!!! Â If you don't understand what I'm saying.....I gotta wonder if you have taste buds!!! Â :-)
Damn this is good food. The meatballs are the best in Chicago. Meat lasagna, eggplant parm - all of it is delicious.
Such a friendly place - they always have a smile.
Very very reasonable prices.
I called LAST MINUTE one day (10AM) and asked if they could make a sub platter and a couple of other things by noon. Not only did they, they were cheerful and helpful.
I got this place #2 on my sub list because I like alpine food shop better, however this place makes a great sub. And there tiny Italian grocery is cool. The place has a good, you can't eat there it's a to go place but also make great Italian sausage and if you get there early it's fresh! Just made. I would recommend any who wants a sub for lunch and wants to pick up some Italian sausage for dinner and few imported Italian grocery items to hit this sometimes. It's one of my personnel favorites!
Review Source:Our First time to the area. Â But This place is worth a drive. Â Fresh made Italian sausages ground and cut in back! Â I've been to all the cupcake spots and if you don't try there tiramisu cupcake you are missing out on one of the best cupcakes in Chicago. Â Super friendly family run old school Italian grocery. Â Don't expect any frills just good homemade classics.
Review Source:BEST damn SAUSAGE in the city, try it your GRILL will thank you for it..get some peppers and a loaf of french bread and you will be in 7th heaven..don't forget to try one of the many subs there great too..
Hard place to find but worth the time believe me you'll love it.!!!
P.S. These guys are noway related to the one's on harlem you can tell by the food...and don't forget to grab a number when you walk in or your screwed..
I just moved back to Chicago and was trying to find this little Italian market and deli I went to as a kid, after much searching I thought I found it at Nottoli and Sons. Â Told my wife about the great sandwhiches and the cute little 2 isle Italian market. Â We went there to grab a couple subs, and as soon as we pulled up I could tell by the neighborhood this wasn't the place from my childhood, but we were there and gave it a try anyways.
And I am so glad we did! Â This may not be the place I was looking for, but it was an even better find. Â I had a combo, and my wife had the Italian sub. Â We both loved our sandwhiches, and agreed we'd have to go back soon and pick up some of the packaged pastas and sausage, which looked really good.
There is a small wall of tribute to the 3rd generation owner, a former rugby player and pro wrestler. Â He was behind the counter chatting to a couple of his regulars, he.seemed like a nice guy and am interesting character.
The owner and the store were both nice, but I went for a sub and my wife and I agree the subs were fantastic.
I have been coming here ever since I was a little kid. I have tried many of the places like it but in my opinion this is one of the best. There pot roast sandwhich is amazing but get there early because they run out quickly. A 6in sub could easily fill someone. Always lots of meat and trimming on the subs. Its a family run place and I see the same people as I did 5 yrs ago, which is always nice.
Review Source:This place is unreal. I just got off the phone with my best friend in Chicago and have planned our trip there Saturday morning. Grocery store that has everything good Italian food junkies need, with the utmost authenticity. Frankie's Hot Pepper Spread giardinara here is so goddamn great, that my friend ships me 2 jar's UPS every few months. Last time I was here, I grabbed an impulse buy canoli at the counter that knocked my socks off.
If you haven't been, it's worth the jaunt!
I was introduced to this Italian secret yesterday! Â My mother-in-law drove in from Indiana for a visit and said she'd been craving the garlic Italian sausage ever since she moved away from Chicago a few years ago. Â She's the best mother-in-law ever! Â She shopped for us and cooked the best Italian meal I've had in a very long time. Â She's not even Italian...so don't let that intimidate you (she's Irish and Polish). Â ;)
Review Source:Did the subs get better in the last year or so? I was getting subs and things from both the Belmont and Harlem shops and was underwhelmed. Yet I've now been in the Belmont shop twice this week, and the subs are way better than I recall. Meaty and cheesy on bread that isn't too crunchy or too chewy. And their homemade giardiniera is pretty decent.
They may not be Bari subs, but they're pretty close. Alpine and Lolo's are fine and nice. Danny's in Melrose is good too, despite the vinegrette they soak it in. But if you like Bari or Fontano's, you'll dig Nottoli's.
A word of warning: at the Belmont shop, make sure you tell the sandwich girl exactly what you want from the store. Chips, colas, pastas, ragu, whatever. She tallies it all up in advance, and the register girl doesn't like any surprises.
After my trip from NYC, thinking about Italian food such as homemade sausage and arancini (rice ball). You don't see these little Ma and Pa deli's anymore and was surprised that they still exist.
It was an interesting experience, upon entering the door I see a few small tables for in-house dining and to my right, I see a long deli counter. The first thing you have to do is grab a number, as I learned quickly that without a number, no one will help you. Once my number was called I had a personal assistance to help and answer all my questions. Your assistance did it all, packed all my cold-cuts and made me a 6" submarine sandwich and checked me out.
It was a long trip out there to Nottoli and Son but worth it, everything was authentic as it could be and felt like I was in Italy, There was plenty of FREE parking on the street which you don't see anymore especially in the city.
Ok, I am not Italian, but the food here is amazing.
Never heard of the place, but because of the ever growing Groupon company, I purchase a groupon coupon.
It was a nice summer day and the place was packed. I cannot believe how good the Italian sub tasted, this doesn't taste like Subway's Italian sub. I guess that's wy people should patronize small business' rather than chain establishments.
Well, let me return to the review and not start rambling about my views on big business.
We also ordered a pizza which the sausage on the pizza was sinful. I will return to buy the sausage and pastas. Â
The cashier looked surprised to see us purchasing the large amount of authentic food, guess we stood out, but the staff was friendly and efficient.
Oh, they have outdoor seating.
okay, first off, I don't give an 5-star very easily. Â That out of the way...
HOLY CRAP Is this place AWESOME!
Thank you fellow Yelpers for giving this place a good write up. Â When the Groupon came out I decided to jump on it based on the earlier enthusiastic reviews.
Walking in the door, not there more than 5 seconds, George (?) Nottoli greets us at the door, asks if we're first timers. Â Obviously getting a bit of traffic from the Groupon, he was genuinely interested in chatting about his place and encouraging us to come back. Â
By the way, don't miss the mini-history of George (my new BFF), who apparently is quite the rugby player AND a former wrestler(?). Â
Ordered an Italian sub which, in addition to being awesome tasting, was HUGE. Â Wife ordered a panini which she enjoyed too (but ate some of my sammich annnnywayyy).
Grocery selections were nice too, and I can't wait to come back for the Italian sausage sandwich (Thursday and Friday only?).
Ok, I grew up on the other side of town, closer to the Harlem Nottolis (gasp) but all of my meat eating years were spent consuming this shops sausage, and other Italian lunch meats my father loved this place. We can all understand why!
This place is the kinda place that my grandfather brought my dad and my dad brought us and we will bring our children and so on. I fell back in love with this place in high school, a friend moved right down the street and our love was rekindled
I have had Italian subs from all over the city, but something about this specific place hits all the right buttons over and over again. I always get the Turkey /Provolone, and eggplant salad no mustard.
The texture of the bread not overly crusty but more like a pillow, soaked with the Briny sweetness of the eggplant salad and the herb filled Italian dressing mixed with the creaminess of the mayo and shreds of onion and lettuce a nice slice of ripe tomato topped with salty turkey and mild provolone. That specific combination just makes me wanna dance down Belmont.
No homemade italian sausage any better anywhere, hands down. Â This is a store that, if you didn't know it was there, you would miss driving by. Â This is a small store, and deli, with limited seating in and out. Â The sanwiches they make, to order, are real real good. Â This is not a fancy place. Â It is family run with George, and his sisters(and others) running the place. Â If you happen to go there look behind the door as you go in, there are some interesting wrestling pictures on the wall. Â Guess big George was, maybe still is, a professional wrestler on the side. Â But getting back to the Italian sausage, the hot was excellent, but I also prefer the garlic. Â Take these home and put them on the grill with some some Gonnella bread and peppers, YAH BOY! Â Inexpensive, and real good, stop by there if in the area.
Review Source:This place has that special feeling like its been in the area for a long time. Â Service is above-average, and everything is very affordable. Â Their sausage, which is their main draw, runs for about $2.79 lb. Â Along with prepared frozen meals, they have a small grocery area with a working deli. Â They also make delicious foot-long panzerottis which are a bargain at $2.29. Â I'll definitely be going back.
Review Source:I can't believe I never shopped here when I lived in the neighborhood. I stopped in yesterday because I felt like a rice ball (not literally) - I mean I wanted some arancini. So I came in and picked out a couple meat & cheese filled balls. When the lady asked, "Is that all?" I said yes.
Then a quick glance around and I saw some awesome foccaccia bread that seemed even better than the kind from Il Mulino di Valenzano which I love. And then I saw they have maybe 6 different kinds of Italian sausage. And then I saw they sell sandwiches too. And then I saw.... well you get the idea. I bought a few other things before leaving.
For a little Italian shop on Belmont, they offer a lot and it's not overpriced as some of these boutique grocers like Morningfields. The mild garlic Italian sausage I bought cost only $2.79 a pound, which is about what I pay for the ordinary stuff at Shop-n-Save. They even have a freezer case with some packaged Italian ice I'll have to try on another visit. Maybe I'll come in and get me one of them yummy Italian samiches and eat it outside at one of their tables.
I have been going to Nottoli & Son for over 10 years. Â Their specialty is Italian Sausage, and they make them fresh, on-site and in several varieties; Â from garlic, to sweet, to spicy, to their XXX hot. Â All are great and available fresh from the counter or, more recently, vacuum-packed and frozen in 1 lb wheels.
They also sell homemade frozen lasagna, meatballs, and other awesomeness in their stand-up freezer.
The deli counter has a great selection of Italian deli meats and cheeses, olives, stromboli, aranchini, focaccia, calzone, etc. Â At lunchtime, they do made-to-order subs on Italian bread (that's delivered daily).
They have an entire endcap in front stocked with House Label giardiniera (hot and mild), olive spread, sport peppers, etc.
The family still runs the shop and you can often find dad and son on-site.
My family moved to the West Coast a few years back and I have to regularly express-ship frozen sausages so they can get their fix.
the best italian sausage you can find in chicago! my parents and grandparent have gone here, you can find alot of Italians in this place. Their sausage and pasta salad, and chesse is the best! I had a party and grilled their sausage and i had complaments all night about this sausage and gave directions all night. I promise you can not go wrong with anything you buy here..
Review Source:This review is based on a Hot Beef Sandwich...
I went here looking to get the Italian Sausage Sandwich. Â They were all out of the sandwich. I plan to go back and try to get the Sausage sandwich.
The beef sandwich was just ok. The beef wasn't as tender as other Italian beef locations thoughout Chicago. Â The juice was very mild with a hint of flavors.
I also had them put mild giardiniera on the sandwich. Â It had no heat to it. I will try the hot giardiniera next time.
Again, Â I will be going back for the Italian Sausage Sandwich and will update this review.
They also have a store with a deli in the same location. Â The meats and sausages all look to be high quality. Â The people were very nice.
The first thing you should do is take a number for any service. It's a fair system so everyone gets taken care of in order.
