If you are looking for a good place to have a few drinks and watch a game, which I was, this is a good place to go. Â They have TVs galore. Â If you are hungry and looking for a good meal, which I was, this might not be the place to go. Â The food was average at best. Â Sure, it's a sports bar, what do you expect? Â But I've had better food at other sports bars. Â And their service is terrible. Â The servers there were less than motivated. Â I left there after my meal and went across the street to Innisfree to finish the game. Â I'm sure I'll give it another try, but only for drinks and to watch a game.
Review Source:On Tap is my favorite place in Birmingham to get wings. As someone who avoided wings for a good quarter of a century, I can say that On Tap's wings are the opposite of what I hated in wings. I can't stand wings that are just crispy skin and bone when you bite into them.
On Tap's wings meet my approval. They consistently have a good amount of actual meat on the wing and are deep fried to perfection. I'm usually a "hot" wing person, but On Tap's mild sauce does the trick for me (does anyone else feel like their mild is a bit spicier than the average mild sauce?).
If I'm not really hungry, I'll get the wings sampler. The boneless wings are okay and can be a nice change of pace from the actual work of eating chicken wings.
I usually get the Irish nachos as a side with my wings - I don't think you can really go wrong smothering french fries with queso and bacon. Add a nice cold beer to the equation and you've got a great meal.
A decent sports bar to grab a drink and watch a game. Nothing special here though. The food is general pub fare but it was tasty enough. We stopped there on St Patricks day and they had a decent crowd going. Â Biggest negative was the nasty pile of vomit in the sink in the men's bathroom. But, like I said it was St. Paddy's day and I'm sure this isn't a regular occurrence. I'd visit again to catch a ball game.
Review Source:Nice but mediocre place. A 3.5 not a full 4.
Maybe deserving a 4 just because it's open late.
Food is good, I won't complain about that at all. Pretty carefully done pub-quality food.
I'm bothered by the service quality. They are plenty of beers but waiters  seem not having any idea of how they taste like or from where they are from. That's a bad point for a brewery, in my opinion.
Overall a good place where to stop by in a thirsty or hungry late night. I wouldn't take the car to intentionally go there though.
Just go there if you are looking for a good beer and you are close by.
1st time here with a group of girlfriends and having a hard time finding much on the positive side but will try. Â We all decided to order a variety of bar food.
Pro's:
Waitress: almost the best part of the evening - friendly, polite and no errors.
Onion Rings: 2nd best part of the night
French Fries: good flavor
Blue Cheese: good wing blue cheese
Beer: would order again - Guinness with a shot of rosies lime juice
Con's:
Wings: Hot - really not that hot and sauce poured on top of them and could have used more celery with order.
Parking: difficult
I will go again but hope we can sit outside since they seemed to have a large outside area. Â I will order the onion rings, Guinness and try something else besides the wings. Â If your in your 20's and want to watch a game this is the place for you with tv's practically touching each other on all the walls.
Lot's of TV's and a nice atmosphere. Â You can see the TV's from nearly any table in the place. Â The service has always been rather slow and inconsistent for me, though. Â One night, the wrong beer was brought to me twice. Â I've been very happy with all the food I've gotten here, but wish the beer specials were a bit better. Â The selection is more than adequate, and the patrons are nice folk.
Review Source:I'm not a smoker, but The Viper had procured some incredible cigars for all of us and we needed a place to smoke them. Â After a number of suggestions, I decided that the non-resident should offer an opinion. Â "Which one of these places definitely will allow me to smoke this cigar? Â Because that's the only criteria I care about." Â We quickly settled on the smoking-friendly sports bar On Tap. Â
On Tap has a rather impressive selection of draft beer and they have rotating daily specials from a number of different microbreweries (for example, every Tuesday, they carry an additional beer from Bell's Brewery). Â Lighting my cigar, I fumbled with basic questions like "Are you ready to order?" Â Much to my delight, a Good People IPA made its way to the table. Â
"I'm just going to carbon copy Venu's picks this year," BR mentioned while potentially questioning my sanity for my detailed running commentary on the Murray State-St. Mary's game. Â Not only did On Tap carry this Bracket Busters game, but they did an admirable job of covering a tapestry of the important basketball games of the day on a number of TVs. Â
Despite the fact that I only ordered one beer during a visit that surely lasted over one hour, our waitress Lindsey remained friendly (probably because the Viper and BR drank about 4 each during the same time period). Â Rather fortuitously, I met a couple of other people who work at this bar during a service industry night later in my trip and, my own lecherous and gratuitous behavior aside, I have to say they were uniformly friendly people. Â
The bottom line is that this is a good place to watch sports while drinking in a comfortable atmosphere that doubles and triples as both a college hangout and a bar where one can smoke cigars. Â This is exactly the type of place we don't have in Washington D.C. and frankly, that is a bit of a tragedy.
Great family owned sports bar! If you like beers, look no further than On Tap! the staff is great with recommendations, the wings are the hottest my friends and I have ever tried, and they have tons of big screens carrying pretty much any game you could want to watch (well, maybe not cricket...). Â :)
Review Source:Part 2 - An update to the original.
My first review is below, and it shall remain, but as promised an updated review. On my way out of town, my coworker and I stopped by for lunch, and as I expected, my second visit and first dine experience was better than my first visit.
The service was better than the night before, and my chicken Philly was right on the money - I'll say it was decent chicken Philly but not on the level of the best ones I've had. The house potato chips were delicious and I'm really glad the waitress suggested them!
I'll probably even bump my next visit up to a 4 star review if I have the chance to enjoy one of their thirty or so tasty tapped beverages and enjoy some sporting event!
Review Número Uno is below...
Take note - this is merely a review for my takeout experience here - I'm going to check this place out again tomorrow for lunch to watch some football games.
But first impression - is in between a 2 and 3 star review.
I walked up to the bar, and it was 5-10 minutes before the tender got to me - and the place was busy, but not that busy so service, ehh, so so. The good thing was, that my carry out was ready.
I read the menu online, and really just needed a good salad and went for the chili which sounded great. The chef salad sounded like it'd hit the spot after I had my rather large portioned lunch. The menu said the salad had tossed greens - ham - turkey - mixed cheeses - tomato - red onions - cucumber and egg. Ok, well my salad had iceburg lettuce, which i guess counts as tossed greens since it was green, and probably tossed - ham - egg - tomato red onions and swiss. But where was this turkey or cucumber they talked about? Or the mixed cheeses? For a $12 salad i was very disappointed. This salad gets a 1 star for the price.
The chili was redeeming though - I got some value from ordering a cup of it. The flavor was quite good, and the quantity fair for the price of it. It has an excellent slow heat, with a good mixture of beans and beef. Maybe they put some of the other cheese that was supposed to be on the salad on the chili - but whatever - it was good.
I can tell this is a place where I would want to watch college football or NFL football on Saturdays and Sundays, with the quantity of televisions inside and outside (hence why I might go back tomorrow before I leave town). Also - this bar had an EXCELLENT selection of beers on tap - but I just was not in the mood to try any of the local selection this evening.
Hopefully I'll comeback with a redeeming review for tomorrow.
Stopped here for lunch and to watch a Cincinnati Bengal's game the other week en route to the B-ham airport. Its your typical sports bar, but with a larger beer selection and a little bit more character. Service was decent and the food was pretty good too. We got fried pickles and wings, and I'd say both were above average. Its not too often I find myself in Birmingham, but I can definitely see myself visiting this place again!
Review Source:I dream about opening a place like this in NYC. Drinking beer outdoors while watching DirectTV football? And eating wings. Yes, please. My BF quickly reminded me about "noise laws" in nyc. Whatever. This place is cool though - inside was packed on a Sunday and we snagged a seat outside. They have tons of draft beers. I had the Abita AndyGator, which has a delicious 8+% alcohol content, and well - just might be my new favorite beer... considering other places in the area were not open on Sunday, this place rocks!
Review Source:There was a Hooters near our hotel that we frequented entirely too often simply because it was the only drinking establishment. I've come to accept the little battered and fried wings that places like Hooters and BW3's serve only because there's not too many places that take the time to make them correctly (and when you're covering them with sauce that's so hot that you can feel it moving through your intestine, who cares how the chicken tastes?). Despite this, I still have plenty of respect for those places who can do good by this classic piece of bar food, and it was with this in mind that I visited On Tap.
Is it noteworthy for a sports bar to have a significant number of televisions, because there were seriously quite a few coming at me from all directions. What is definitely noteworthy is the beer selection, featuring a significant number of good beers on tap and available in the cooler. It's a standard for how I choose my favorite bars, and in that respect On Tap succeeds well. Of course, you can't have a respectable beer selection without knowing what you're talking about with regards to the food, and the bar does that well, too, offering freshly-made bar staples like burgers, pizzas, and wings, the latter of which have been praised as the best in the city by Birmingham Weekly. I wanted to give them a try.
But not before an appetizer of fried green tomatoes. The sour tang of the fruit was pretty good, but they were notably greasy, and that's diasppointing given that the bar is the mecca of all things fried. Could've been worse, I suppose.
Like any reputable wing place, there's several varieties of flavors. Normally, I know what I'm getting into when I order Hooter's "nuclear" or BW3's "blazin," but when the hottest flavor is called "ghost" - likely from the ghost peppers used and ones which I do not wish to put in my mouth lest I ruin the remainder of my day and most of tomorrow, too - I had to play it safe and go with the third hottest option, "scorcher", and while I could have certainly handled more capsaicin, the wings were actually quite spicy thanks to the large presence of black pepper. Thanks to my tongue not being numb, I was able to enjoy the flavor of the wing, too.
From the homemade condiments to the beer selection and the good eats, there's plenty to like about On Tap. The experience wasn't perfect - service was a little slow and it would be nice to see the bar expand beyond its bar food foundation, but in the mean time I'll certainly have a more viable option for beer and wings than what's offered at the chains.
Came here on a business trip to catch the Rays game. They have about 40 beers on tap I believe. Great selection including Sweet Water (one of my favorties). Â The bar tender was great and put my game on a TV for me to watch. It was a great place that I would recommend to catch your favorite team.. Tuesday night is bar trivia night.
Review Source:If you want good simple bar food and a cold beer, On Tap can't be beat. Good place to enjoy the company of friends while drinking and snacking. Â There are daily beer specials and selection is not too bad. Â Wings is a must and hardly ever fails. Â Service is also delightful and prompt.
All in all, a good neighborhood bar for t-shirts and flipflops.
