Disappointing for neighbors on their return after renovations. Â The new look didn't work for us: it is noisy, a tight fit, and no privacy. Â Worse than a diner. Â We were there for lunch and knew from past experience that it would be pricey (all the "specials" and the hamburger were $14), but the greens in my salad were brown and the quarter sized crab cakes were mealy. Â We also feel it wasn't right for them to issue a Groupon and then proceed to close for three months. We like to walk there on snowy winter nights and couldn't use the Groupon then or at our other favorite time in nice outdoor eating weather because it expired three weeks after they reopened!
Review Source:Went to O'Neil's last night. Â The food is very consistent and well priced. Â O'Neil's served as a great place to unwind from a hectic week. Â It was quiet and laid back....well not any more! Â The new decor is upbeat which is refreshing, but the noise factor is overwhelming. Â Most tables are very close together, so do not attempt a personal or intimate conversation. The 'old' charm is now replaced with a high energy feeling....not the place if you want to relax! Â We will wait for the warm weather and enjoy the outdoor seating.
Review Source:My husband and I have always been a fan of O'Neils. Â We love the consistency of the food. Â Their salmon is always cooked to perfection and the lemon butter caper sauce is sooo good! Â However, in the last few years, the decor felt dated and old. Â Well, no more! Â O'Neils just underwent a major remodeling and the result is fresh, young and vibrant. Â The white banquette benches add a lovely touch. Â Now we can enjoy both the food and the decor!
Review Source:My husband and I purchased a Groupon and went to O'Neil's today for the first time. It will not be our last. Â We were treated like family as we entered the restaurant. Â Our waitress, Minerva, made us feel like we were the only people in the restaurant, even though there was a party with more than 30 people going on in the main dining area. Â My husband, who normally doesn't care for tomato soup devoured the delicious tomato basil soup, as did I. Â His Cobb salad (chimney stack) was fresh and delicious. I had the flatbread with sausage, mushrooms, and cheese which was crispy and light. Â We both shared and left feeling very full. Â The prices are reasonable, and the service is great. Â We looked at the dinner menu since we would like to go back again and both the lunch and dinner menu are limited for a picky eater (which neither of us are). Â I actually prefer to not wade through a short novel of a menu. Â The restaurant was charmingly decorated, but we were told that in February of 2013, they will undergo another renovation due to the age of the building.
Review Source:I've been to O'Neil's a few times, and I have to say I'm not entirely sure where these negative reviews are coming from. This place has fabulous food. The decor is a bit outdated, but this isn't a chan, and as far as food quality goes there are very few places on the north shore that have been around as long as O'Neil's has that are any if at all better.
Most recently, my fiance and I went there on a saturday afternoon and sat on the patio. Their food is outstanding, everything is incredibly fresh and well plated. My fiance had what he said was the best salmon sandwich of his life, and I had an outstanding broiled salmon salad. The service wasn't particularly fast or slow, it seemed well paced with letting us enjoy our meal, which I know some people are not into.
Other times I've been there I've had outstanding pasta, great chicken, etc. I think this place is quite good.
Nice patio. Â Slow service, but pleasant. Â Ordered portobello wrap, which was quite tasty, and came served with "pasta salad"- chopped penne with mayonnaise and frozen mixed vegetables. Â We had to ask for silverware when the food arrived and we had no utensils. Â The Kobe truffle burger, ordered medium, came out well done and dry with no flavor of truffle, and served on a stale bun, which they promptly replaced when we asked them to, also stale. The fries were great, but not hand cut.
Review Source:O'Neil's is one of our favorite restaurants. Â We have gone there regularly for many years on date night. Â It is romantic, and the food and service is fantastic. Â My husband's favorite is the cioppino, and I love the salmon. Â However, there is a new dish that is my favorite, the pecan crusted tilapia. Â I have never tasted such a good fish dish. Â The Caesar salad is wonder too. Â Don't miss date night at O' Neil's in Winnetka. Â

I have lived a couple of blocks from O'Neils for almost two years but didn't think of trying it until a Groupon deal popped up. I went for dinner on a Sunday night with moderate expectations, which I'm happy to report were exceeded.
FOOD & DRINK: The menu is traditional Italian with a variety of pastas plus beef, veal, poultry, seafood etc. Entrees come with choice of soup or salad, plus sides are included, so the value is above average. My chicken picatta ($19) was very tasty and not swimming in sauce. Mixed fresh veggies were stir-fried perfectly. Pasta was average -- sauce was a bit too heavy with oregano -- but I wasn't in the mood for pasta anyway so it didn't matter. My companion said his tilapia was very fresh although he noted it was a bit bland, but that's what we've come to expect from suburban restaurants. One highlight was the seared scallops appetizer. The scallops were perfect and served with a delicious fresh pineapple and red pepper salsa that had a bit of habenero in it. I'm not a big fan of fruit salsas but this was an exception. Bonus: They serve my favorite Skinny Girl margaritas by the glass. I know it's made by one of those "un-Real Housewives", which pains me, but it's tasty and low-cal so I drink it. They also have a decent selection of wine (my favorite Cigar Zin!), spirits and bottled beers. A couple of Fat Tires kept my companion happy.
SERVICE: The place was busy but we were promptly and courteously seated in advance of our reservation time (we arrived about 30 mins early). Our waitress was very helpful, cheerful and there at the right moments without being intrusive. Water and warm bread were always full, empties cleared quickly but not so much that we felt rushed
SETTING: Past reviews are critical of the room. Either the place has been redone or the reviews are too harsh. Aside from the fact that we noticed that the tile hadn't been grouted (we're remodeling, we zone in on that stuff), the decor was fine and the materials were above average--cushy booths and chairs, granite tables, clean modern lavs, nice colors, etc.
OVERALL: O'Neil's is a great neighborhood find. It might not survive downtown where Italian restaurants like Coco Pazzo and Spiagia set the bar very high, but it is more than adequate and definitely above average for the area.
Great: Â our awesome waitress who was very perceptive and let us know, unprompted, that they're down one chef and hence the wait. Â Wonderful outdoor seating; very children friendly environment, warm crusty bread. Â
Not so great: Â a bit mushy crab and prawns in my cioppino; these nets/flies that won't stop bothering us until they took my cioppino away; the blackhole hostess who forgets everything you ask for; freshly grated soft Parmesan cheese (why is it soft?) they serve with the caesar salad.
I would not return to this place. The interior decor is outdated and frankly dirty with fabric on the ceilings. We spotted flies and cobwebs. It looks like 5 people tried to decorate it and couldn't agree at all! The food was disappointing and the service was SLOW!! In addition, it was overpriced. They do have a nice outdoor patio if the weather is nice.
Review Source:I really enjoy dining at O"Neils. The wait staff are helpful, but they also give you time to talk with friends. I don't feel rushed. I have eaten both indoors and outdoors and enjoyed both. I love their salads at lunch. I often order the salmon or the Chicken Marsala for dinner. The pesto pasta is also really good, especially with shrimp added. I'm not a desert person, but my friends usually order one. They have a decent wine list for the money. There is parking if you can't find a space on the street, but it's a block away and up some stairs. I don't mind unless it's freezing outside.
Review Source:Wow. My companions? 14+ stars! Your mileage may vary.
This place has seen better days. Filthy fabric ceilings. My dad used to call this particular style of decor "coffin curtains" and I agree, these complete with years of black dust. The interior, dark and outdated. But . . . on this HOT summer day, it was cool and pleasant and I didn't come here for a fashionable interior.
I'd send anyone in the area here for a Cobb Salad (delicious. really delicious) and a vivacious, friendly, sweet, attentive waitress. The service could not have been better. The bus boy filled our waters when necessary, not that "hover around and pour 4 drops in every time the person takes a sip" that inexplicably (and I'm probably way too OCD) irritates me. No, he was sweet and just attentive enough.
We also had a pesky fly that was irritating us. We alerted the waitstaff, and they dispatched said fly without even so much as displaying a filthy flyswatter. It just drowned, that fly. Or something, but it did not bother us anymore.
I'd send anyone who was in the area to this place, or come back if I'm in the area again. Solid service, reliable delicious food at an established place that is deservedly riding on it's good reputation. Yum!
I'm partial to O'Neill's because when my girls were tots (age 2-7) and we lived nearby, we had our weekly Daughter Date Nights here. They were the Princesses of O'Neill's. We usually ordered their calamari and kiddy cocktails. I would try half-heartedly to get them to eat broccoli, and we'd move on to ice cream and chocolate chip cookies.
I hadn't been here in many years, until today. The service is excellent, as it always was. The food was excellent, too. Salmon, and Cobb Salad. Gazpacho, too. All perfect for a hot summer day.
The decor is tired and too dark. But like I said, O'Neill's is like an old friend. I can look beyond it.
I think I'll train up here with my girls this summer before they return to college.
My fiance and I decided on O'Neil's for our Rehearsal Dinner. After meeting with the General Manager, sampling some of their appetizers and wine, and then having dinner here...we were hooked! This place is terrific. They are very accommodating, the food is delicious, and there are lots of choices for wine. We were able to create a menu for our 20 guests that included 5 entrees, 2 appetizers, wine, bread, etc. Friendly service and great food...what more do you need?
Review Source:I'm wavering between two and three stars, because I doubt I'll go back, but I enjoyed my food. Â The inside of this restaurant really bothers me. Â The mix of Italian and Irish themes is unsettling; the draped ceiling looks like it needs to be dusted and you can still see some of the styro-boards peeking out near a rusted vent. Â Every single one of the dark wood chairs is banged up, dented and scratched. Â The wall adjacent to our booth was stained with food and liquid. Â I couldn't wait to get out of there.
On the other hand, the soup I had was delicious, the breads divine, and my son's hamburger perfect. Â My husband enjoyed his food very much, as well. Â
Maybe I'll go back and eat outside in the summer, but I'm not eating inside again.
The staff is so nice at O"Neil's that I almost want to give them another star just for attitude and effort, but the food is expensive and a little uneven.
It sort of a nice place to sit outdoors because they have a patio (vs the inside that feels very dark and dated), only there is not enough out there to remind you that you are not in the suburbs and not basically sitting on Green Bay Road. Â If these things don't bother you, you're set for a nice day or evening al fresco!
One of the most tasty things they make is the Grilled Garlic Shrimp.  It's  only 4 shrimp, but they are huge and well-cooked with a LOT of garlic and spices.  It's in the shell, but we in our family are shell-eaters, so this is not an issue.  I can recommend this dish with confidence.
Recently I had the Gazpacho, which was very good. Then I had the Curry Chicken Flat Bread, which was not good at all. Â Afterwards, I shared a dessert with my mom: Â an ice cream/praline cookie thing that was just ok, but notable because of its gigantic portion. Â This is what I mean by uneven. Â And for the prices ($15-20 entrees), I feel that the food should be consistent and better.
I think that I'd go back for a big salad for lunch, sitting outdoors with a friend or with a good book. Â It's that kind of place, one that I would go to without high expectations, but knowing that I would always receive service with a big smile, at a location that's conveniently close to home.
Delicious food and great service. It's a nice, small and friendly place. My family sat in a comfy booth, with a perfect view to the kitchen and got to watch the chefs and staff at their best. The dishes were presented beautifully and they all tasted great! My folks went straight to their favorite entree, the Cioppino, a fish stew tons of fresh ingredients. I had the fish special with mushrooms and asparagus which was recommended by our waitress and indeed proved to be quite tasty. Dessert was a surprising slice of Tres Leches cake (at an Italian restaurant?), that was pretty satisfying as well. The only thing I was not impressed with was the Caesar salad. The dressing was weak, and I preferred my ma's balsamic vinaigrette house salad much better!
Review Source:Dinner itself was OK - perfectly acceptable fare for the price.
Where the restaurant fell apart was in the take-home. We had the busser wrap up two of our dishes. The one was a pesto that was wrapped in such a way that the package leaked and got oil over my (new) pants. We also had him wrap the duck and asked for bones and all. Well, no soup for us as the bones were not included in the doggy bag.
Sorry, but it's all part of the experience and the take-home ruined what otherwise would have been a good experience.
Your experience at O'Neils will vary completely depending on where you sit. If it's nice outside and you sit on the patio, you'll have a pretty pleasant lunch. Inside, if you're in the first room with the bar, the atmosphere is cruddy. If you're in the bigger dining room, you'll feel like you're at an upscale restaurant. It's pretty schizophrenic. The food is not bad, and only mildly overpriced if you're there for lunch--pretty tasty soups, salads and sandwiches. At dinner, you'll be sitting in the nicer dining room and you'll get overcharged for pretty average food.
Review Source:O'Neil's has been a staple on the North Shore scene for a while now. The atmosphere is a on the nicer side, and it's a nice place to sit outside when the weather is warm.
Great chicken caesar that Julia Roberts supposedly ordered a lot when she was in Winnetka filming Ocean's 12. Good salmon as well.
This place is so small and comfy but still manages to be upscale. Â The salads are always great, their soups are also amazing. Â Tonight I had the tomato basil soup and it was phenomenal. Â I think I could eat such hearty goodness all day long. Â Their grilled shrimp (when on the menu) is always done right, and their salmon is outstanding. Â
The place is decorated in a french country style, and offers outdoor seating when the weather is right.
I would really recommend this place for a laid back dinner for suburbanites when you want good food, but don't necessarily want to hike out to the city.
My favorite sit down lunch spot in the north 'burbs. Â Their salads are fantastic, fresh, varied. Â I get their oriental chicken salad but every salad is always tempting for me. Â They've got tables outside for the warmer months. Â Definately a "ladies who lunch" feel but who's surprised with their lunch menu full of such delectable salads.
