We were in this morning.
the food is fine, your typical fare for breakfast, cozy would be the term. parking is easy, prices are circa 1970 which means for todays day and age extremely affordable-check was under $30.
downsides
-the service was borderline awful. No water, long wait time, most of the usual stuff you think a place would do they didn't. indifference from the wait staff.
-this is not a place for a meal with more than 3-4 people.
bottom line, it's the concept you want and everything is there except for the wait staff and this is not a first time thing with them.
I wish there were more places like this downtown. Â They have a great menu with a wide range of breakfast and lunch options. Â The food is always fresh and the service is good. Â I have had a number of their egg dishes and sandwiches. Â Not once have I ever been disappointed. Â Last time we were there we overheard that they had sold 35 cupcakes. Â The deserts always look amazing, but I have never given into my temptations.
If you are a first timer remember that it is cash only! Â There are only a few tables, but they seem to turn them rather quick.
A very off-the-radar stop that you've probably passed hundreds of times if you regularly zip up Green Bay through the North Shore. The whole place seats 2-3 dozen (12 tables?) so there can be a wait at prime weekend breakfast hours, but nothing like Walker Bros. and their weekend lemmings. Always a solid meal with lots of specials on the chalkboard up front, but the standout is the tamale corn flapjacks. Yowza, these are unique and so tasty!
This is a special stop on the way out for weekend pumpkin patchin' or Christmas tree hunting. The warm vibe just lends itself to that.
Easy to miss off Green Bay ride but definitely a nice local breakfast spot (besides being a bit cramped). Ordered a torta (loved it!) and my wife had a skillet (way too many potatos, though). Also ordered pancakes (good texture but lacked flavor). Servers were friendly but a bit forgetful despite such a tiny place. Seems like a popular place and left satisfied but not blown away.
Review Source:Oh, snap. I knew this place was fabulous but I went there yesterday and they upped the ante. Seriously, choosing one of their many specials was the most difficult food-related decision I've ever had to make. I went with the homemade banana bread French toast and it was perfection, though I may always wonder about the artichoke and Swiss cheese omelet that never was.
Some other must-try items are the bread pudding French toast and the tamale corn flapjacks. The latter are a complete surprise, and a little weird at first, but completely worth working through any misgivings you might have. They're topped with cheese and served with salsa and sour cream, and they're out of control (you know, in a good way).
The service here is pretty excellent, despite the harried looks the waitstaff always have on their faces. That leads me to my biggest problem with this place: it's too damn small. It's literally the size of my kitchen and living rooms combined. And I really don't live in a very big house. It's hard to find a place to sit where you won't feel crowded, unless you happen to snag one of the two or three booths by the window. Yes, it's cozy in here, but it's honestly never worked in the place's favor if you ask me. I love my family and friends but not enough to sit on top of them.
I also don't love the seemingly endless parade of Ugg-wearing, iPhone-chatting, Tiffany key necklace-wearing girls and ladies who frequent this place, nor am I fond of their companions (who, regardless of their ages, wear North Face fleece jackets). But that's what you get when you go to Winnetka.
i love the green bay cafe! it is a tiny little place with a husband/wife who run the place and serve tables. their pancakes are fantastic. some of the best i've ever had. all the other breakfast food is great as well. and they always put a ton of whipped cream on the hot chocolate...it's a good way to keep a whipped cream fiend like myself happy on a cold winter day. if you're passing through winnetka, definitely stop by the green bay cafe!
Review Source:I went here for a breakfast meeting a few weeks ago - what a great little place! Â I can't believe I never knew about it before (I grew up nearby). Â Probably not the best place to have a meeting, but a great place to eat breakfast. Â Very reasonably priced, with great options depending on whether you want a lot or a little (I get annoyed by breakfast places that only serve huge items). Â The food was high quality and the service was fast. Â I'm sure I'll be back!
Review Source:I ate at this cute little cafe on my first visit to Winnetka. I don't want to say that I had pre-conceived notions of what I thought Winnetka would be, but I guess that might be a little true. When my friend took me to the Green Bay Cafe I was really surprised that this was a northshore dining establishment and not a little cafe in the middle of the country. That is not to say that this is not a wonderful place; it is a cozy, friendly little breakfast and lunch spot. It is also the first place I have ever had asparagus in a sandwich. They have a delightful veggie sandwich with asparagus, tomato, and swiss cheese.
