We've eaten John's more than I'd like to admit and I don't understand what the fuss is about. The only reason I eat it is because my in-laws swear by it. They love it so we have it from time to time when we're there and they order it. I think it's one of those things that's just tradition in the area and maybe was great at one point but over time lost something along the way and people just keep eating there because they've been doing it for so long.
The pizza is super greasy. I can usually only tolerate one piece (and that's after I sop up the standing grease on top with a napkin). The sauce is ok. Not great, not terrible. The sausage is good if you like sausage I'm told, but I prefer veggies. The crust is what gets me. A traditional italian pizza crust should be crispy and stand straight out. Even if it's not 'traditional' crust it should at least hold the weight of the toppings. This crust is like nothing I've ever seen. Its soft and chewy and uncomfortably floppy. You can't even pull a piece out of the box without everything falling off of it and falling apart. You definitely can't hold a piece in your hand and eat it. It's definitely a fork and knife deal, which is ok if we're talking about stuffed pizza, but thin crust? Â If I'd only had it once, I'd think it was a mistake and maybe they didn't cook it long enough but I've had it enough to know that's how they choose to serve it.
Honestly, the region has pretty decent pizza so this would be about the last place I'd choose, especially for the money. If I do end up having to eat their food I usually order a beef sandwich, which is ok, nothing special. Their fries are the really thick cut old style kind that never seem to be cooked long enough and always come mushy. The one time I did try to order something else I went online to check out what else was on their menu. I chose the cheese ravioli but I was told they don't have that. Maybe they need to update their menu. I ended up with the penne pasta with alfredo, and it was noodles with canned sauce. Meh. At least the noodles weren't overcooked, perfect al dente, but that's all it had going for it. Â
If it's good pizza you want, keep looking!
After reading the great reviews of John's we chose to go there for dinner on our road trip stop in Indiana. It is by far the worst pizza either of us had ever had. We didn't even finish 1/8th of our 20 dollar pizza!!! The sauce is sour and the toppings which were not fully cooked did not say on the crust.
Review Source:Not long ago we had bought a pizza and a 4 pc chicken meal from their Munster location. I ate the chicken.
The next day I got a violent case of food poisoning. Johns was the only place we had eaten since we came into town (from So. California). No doubt the problem was Johns.
So you know their chicken is bad. Dangerous even. I heard the pizza was not as good tasting as my wife remembered as well. She couldn't wait to eat at Johns pizza when we came to Munster. She was disappointed and I got sick.
The food poisoning from Johns came at a bad time. It was my wifes grandmothers 100th birthday and I was sick all the way through the party. I spent most of the party in the bathroom with a bad case of everything you can imagine and that all at the same time.
I wrote them the next day with similar text as this and never heard a word from them. I was looking for an opportunity to share my John's experience with someone besides John's deaf ear... So be warned! dont eat at John's, you could very well get food poisening... I did.
I love this place. Miss their place in Calumet City. This location carry out-delivery only. You can get most of the stuff from the old place here except for the ravioli and veal which I miss very much.My dad loves chicken vesuvio and likes their version the best. They do cut their pizza in long strips. If you want your pizza cut in the conventional way ask them for the party cut.Get on their mailing list if you like deals and a chance to win a pie.
