I DJ'ed for a dear friend's birthday last year at this place. Â I've only heard of Pebble Roppongi prior to with mixed review. Â I've only been to the place 3-times, once before I DJ'ed for my friend, when I DJ'ed and once after.
My personal experience is also with mix review, so I'm going to pitch my review from 3 different point of view, as a patron/customer, as a DJ and as once a loung/club Promoter.
As a Customer - the place is really cool, small and kind of intimate place, good for 150-200 people, you can push to 250 people, complete standing room. Â Just as advertised, definitely a perfect venue for a private event. Â You wouldn't really know it's there or what it's for if you wasn't looking for it. Â It's situated in a plaza in within downtown sunnyvale, where there's a few nice select, decent dining places. Â At first glance from the exterior, you wouldn't this place exist or might think it's a front for something. The night I came on my own to have a drink with a friend, they were having karaoke night, pretty cool atmosphere, perfect to have a quick getaway, have a good talk over drinks. Â The bar is nicely set up, it's a step down, so if you're sitting at the bar, its not like you're sitting high on the bar stool while the bartender still step high above your eye level, they're a step down and you can see over the bar a bit where you can see you're drink is not being watered downed or substituted with cheap liquor. Â The bartenders are pretty nice and very knowledgeable, just don't expect them to be your bar shrink and ask you to pour on your issues. Â Above par mixed drinks, they could do a bit better on the presentation, I can understand plastic glasses, but we're not exactly in Vegas, but pretty good mixes nonetheless, reasonably price I thought. Â They carry high end imported Asian/Japanese hard liquors as well as select domestic and imported beers. Â It's a full wet bar, but don't expect too much, it gets crowded quick, it's a pretty small bar, so don't lose your seat. Â There's a number of lounge style booth tables, about 10 that can sit up to 12, perfect for VIP tables, but that's about it, there's no other really other place to sit, I'm not sure if they're first come first serve tables, wait to be seated or reservations. Â
As DJ - when I was there as customer, the sounds for karaoke night was I thought pretty decent that needs just fine tuning, there's a sound booth, where the system were like the amp, the sound board, karaoke system, etc., are. Â
When I DJ'ed, I was not allowed to hook up to their system, they were afraid of any DJs that they're not familiar with to hook up to their system which is totally understandable. Â I had to bring in my own 2 15-inch powered speakers which is just perfect to sound this place. Â Although I checked out how they are wired, there's XLR connections IN and OUT on the wall going into the sound booth, flushed like it's an outlet, so who ever wired their place is a pro. Â The dance floor is situated toward the back of the entire room, it's a decent 20x14 dancing floor space with a 4x12 step up by the sound booth where whoever sings karaoke stands on. Â So, for a place for 200 capacity, 60-70 percent is the bar and booth. Â So a 20x14 with 40+ bodies dancing, looks pretty good and encouraging for a DJ with the floor packed like sardines, lol. Â
They had what it seems like a custom made rolling DJ table, with shelving to place my bags and gears not used. It was really cool, but whoever made it, must have thought all DJs are 6 foot tall and above, this table was pretty high, I placed my DJ case/coffin and I usually double deck it with the case lid, but the table was too high, so I only had the bottom half on the table, yet it was still high, my DJ deck was almost literally chest level to me and I stand 5'7". Â I browsed around for short stack milk tray/crate, but oh well, the party must go on.
The acoustic and sound proofing in the place is pretty good. Â I had my system pretty cranked up and I could barely hear the sounds from the front door.
As a promoter - once upon a time a promoter, I'd have to say, this place definitely have a potential, but that's on the owners see that. Â Located and accessible near 101, I'd say to mid to mid-high end area neighborhood, pretty descent, mid-class dining, can easily draw or attract those patrons to this place as sorta once stop night life/party source. Â Staff was very cool, from the bar manager, waitresses, bartender to security. Â I was chopping up with the head security most of he time, from the time I got there to set up, on my break and the time I was done and wrapped up for the night.
The parking lot can get cramp though, but there's plenty of street parking up for grabs if you don't mind taking a short walk, streets are pretty well lit and I didn't notice any street transients. Â Â
Over all, I give it a 3, it has potential. Â Perfect for private events of 150-200 tops. Â Bring your own DJ.
Great place to rent out for private parties. Â This is my second time coming here. Â I think you have to provide your own DJ. Â There is plenty of parking. Â It's a bit tricky to find the entrance to this place. Â The entrance is not located on the main street. Â It's behind the building.
Review Source:The mystery has been solved. I finally came here after years of walking by it during late night dt Sunnyvale stumbles. I came here with some of my customers from Japan who are quite familiar with the place and it's employees. We came here after a night of hard drinking to shoot around the bush on business and get some songs in for camaraderie.
We had ourselves a hostess who poured our drinks, attempt conversation, etc. It was an interesting experience.
I too heard about the stuff tetsu was talking about and out of respect I won;t repeat it either. I have heard this place is far removed from the glory days, which given that there were only two gorgeous hostesses available one can guess that this place was the cats meow in the past.
I have been to Pebble Roppingi twice now. My friends have rented out the place for their birthday celebrations and I think it's a pretty cool, laid back place, to have a few drinks and to hang out with friends. If you want to rent out the place to have a private party here, there is a minimum that you and your guests would have to spend on drinks; otherwise there is a flat rate fee. I can't recall what the minimum is; I think it's reachable with about 30+ guests though.
It's not your most pristine place, but it's casual, cheap, and serves it's purpose. There are plenty of booths too. I just like how it's spacious and how there is a lot of room to stand around and mingle. The dance floor is a little on the smaller side, but not too shabby. The staff is very lenient and accommodating. Both times my friends provided their own DJ with speakers, so the music was great too.
I don't think I would go out of my way to go to Pebble, but I would definitely come back for a friends party.
P.S.
The entrance is towards the back, where the parking is located, not on Murphy Street.
My girlfriend had her birthday here and I believe it's open for private party only at night. The place was nice for any events, great lounge area and a small dance floor. Although it was hard to find because the entrance was not on the main strip.
I believe in the day time, it's more catered to Japanese Business Clients....I'll leave that up to your imagination.
my brother had his 30th birthday party here this past weekend. Long story short, you rent this place out for the night. Its for private parties. Can easily fit about 100 comfortably (I'm assuming). You provide your own DJ w/ speakers. You enter through the back door not through murphy street which is nice because the parking lot is right there.
They have comfortable seating, a full bar and even a small dance floor in the back. Overall everyone had a good time. The owner, security guards and bartender were great and I just found out that my girl friend is throwing her 30th birthday party here too in a couple of weeks.
Also, this place is very affordable and I highly suggest you check this place out for your next birthday or any future special occasion.
p.s. from the reviews I was expecting some Japanese themed lounge... It has more of a 70s theme? mirrors everywhere, brightly colored striped, neon paint in the bathroom, neon pebble roppongi signs... My sister and I were trying to describe it to a friend and we couldn't... its nice but not the "japanese" lounge I imagined.
This place is SUPER tiny and very hard to find. It's in the middle of the plaza and the sign is difficult to read.
I've gone here for a private birthday party(s). Apparently, you can rent out the whole lounge.
Other than a friends birthday, I'd probably never come back and just stick to the city or DTsj.
Ideal place to take Japanese business clients.
Continuing the 500 year old hostess club tradition.
A Japanese hostess is basically a modern day Geisha. When your glass is empty they pour your drinks. When you need to smoke, the hostesses light your cigarette. When you want to eat, they feed you. Of course, they will accompany you when you sing karaoke.
This is a high class hostesses club so there is no touching allowed.
The hostesses who range from early 20s to early 30s will also boost your ego by telling you how amazing you are.
You can choose who you want to serve you but there might be an additional fee.
Each hostess has their own unique personality and fashion style, so choose wisely.
If you don't speak Japanese, probably not the best place to go
since you won't receive as good of service.
Go only if you have money to splurge.
It costs 100 dollars per hour excluding drinks which cost probably a minimum of $50 to probably 1k to 2k for the Gold champagne.
I've even heard of the hidden VIP room local Japanese execs.
I bet those guys spend around 3k a night.
If you ask for your hostesses number, likely they will ask you to come back to the club to talk to them again. After enough times at this club, you might have the chance to take the hostesses out, but you must pay the club an exorbitant fee. Then another required trip to the club.
If you have enough money to take out a hostesses, I don't think you'd need to come to this club.
Only do it for fun once in a while personally or when clients are in town from Japan.
Remember, you are basically paying the hostesses to entertain you, serve you for the night, and, tell you how amazing you are.
In reality, they are only pretending to like you so you become a returning customer.
This place is small and cute. couches were comfortable and music was dope. the bartender made exotic drinks for everyone to have a good time. very good service here. lots of parking but dont parked in the wrong parking lot like i did. they usually throw private parties here so you ladies dont have to worry about creeps and weirdos. i definitely will be back
Review Source:As Jonathan S. reviewed, it's a private bar. You cannot just randomly enter into this place on a random night. It is not a club neither. It's a small, hole-in-the-wall on this shopping plaza in the middle of Downtown Sunnyvale. You will miss this place if you're not looking carefully as the sign is not super clear and it's a pretty dark place to spot at night.
My friends have rented out this place a few times. The deal works like this: you do not have to pay for the rental of this place if you and your guest (all of your guests) spend at least $2000 in drinks. It's not too bad if you get a decent sized party there and everyone is buying rounds. We got a bottle of Henn for $200 and a big table. Too bad bottle service blows ass here. Don't come expecting anything awesome.
They won't take credit card unless it's $10 or more of a purchase and there's like no ATM nearby. Def not cool!
The dance floor is about the size of a bathroom. It's tiny. It will not fit everyone and the sound system is busted to all high hell. I can't tell the difference between the lows, highs, bass, or treble. You have to even get your own DJ if you want music that's dance-worthy.
I gave this place two-stars because it's a good place to take all your rowdy friends to drink and to have a private place to do it. I took away 3-stars for the service, the establishment, lack of dance floor, and expensive, mediocre drinks.
My rating of three stars is only because it has an intriguing and mysterious sort of setup that has not been fully investigated. Â After reading the reviews on Yelp I decided to check this place out myself. Â I first tried getting in the door from the front on Murphy St. Â but it was locked. Â It had no sign regarding the hours or anything and the windows were completely blackened out so you could not see in. Â Weird. Now I'm really curious about this place so I go next door to a restaurant to ask about it and they told me that you can only access it from the back and that the hours are a little weird. I proceeded on to Lily Mac's for the weekly karaoke contest and when that ended, Â my friend and I ventured over to the Pebble Roppongi via the back entrance. Â It looked closed from the back as well because of the blackened out windows but then I could see a blue florescent light inside so I thought oh good it's opened. Â I proceeded to open the door and walk in when this guy practically fell over himself getting out of his chair to make sure we did not take another step inside. He then told us that we needed to be members in order to get in but it seemed kind of weird to be so on his guard like that if in fact it is only a karaoke place. Â You can walk into a Country Club, which is private, and nobody is there making sure you don't get passed the door. Â So I'm still not sure what the place is actually about. Â It maybe nothing or maybe something. Â All in all it was kind of exciting going there and checking it out anyway. Â Who knows, Â I may try again..
Review Source:My friends threw a private party here a couple times and I've enjoyed it every time. My boyfriend was suppose to throw his 24th birthday here, but we've decided to wait til next year when he turns 25! The quarter of the century! Hehe! :)
Anyway, this place is fun! It's like a lounge/karaoke bar. It has many sofas, which is good for different groups.
I like this place, so I'll surely come back! :D
They did some renovations here a few years ago.
When you walk in, it first looks like a lounge bar, but it's really a karaoke bar, with some night club'ish type of lighting.
I can't list it here, as this is a public site, but there is a secret to this place if you are Japanese. Â It's a little pricey though, and really setup for Japanese execs and customers. Â It's not a big deal, but the club owners don't like to advertise it.
For all you guys with dirty minds, it's not that illegal thing you might believe, it's not perverse in the way you might imagine. Â There is no PE kind of thing either, and certainly no nudity....Get your minds out of the gutter please.
The closest explanation is that it's like a "lodge" club, where Japanese regulars and execs sometimes go to hang out in a totally Japanese environment when they get a little homesick or when entertaining guests from Japan. Â Sing Japanese songs, talk in Japanese, and order in Japanese....
I was first introduced to this place in 2000 by an exec at Sega of America, and later came here several times. Â It's surprising how completely relaxed Japanese execs and chuzai look here compared to when they're dealing with other folks. Â The sleeves roll up, the smiles are more genuine, and the talk seems to flow more easily, and everyone feels more at ease with who they are.
It's strange, but Japanese chuzai in the States and exec visitors (not all, but many) often have great national pride, and say as much explicitly, but still pressure themselves to think and be more Westernized when they're in the US. Â And that means day long alertness and attention from the time they interact with the cashier at a coffee shop in the morning until the moment they turn in for the night. Â At Pebble, though, they let their guard down partially, sometimes totally. Â The transformation is something to behold. Â What's even funnier is that if even one foreigner who is not part of some larger group is there, the demeanor of everyone changes instantly and remains changed until the foreigner is accepted as an honorary Japanese, or until that person leaves. Â There is an anthropological study in here somewhere....
HINT: Â Before the renovation, this lounge area used to be where the main bar is now. Â It has since been moved.
