Came in here to try their, well, Porterhouse steak.
Parking is available around the back and side of the building (N and E sides)
The inside looks like something straight out of 1980s, with the exception of the flat-panel TVs. Â there's a restaurant side but I ate in the bar area.
The one item in the menu that stuck out instantly was the $35 32oz porterhouse steak. Â Oh hello.
Bread - decent but mediocre
Soup - cream of asparagus - special mention. Â Quite good!
Steak - oh yes. Â It's a bit on the plain side, but I was here to chew on cow, and in this respect the steak delivers. Â However, the 2 silver dishes of melted cheese (blue and I think parmesan) were kinda gross. Â It looked like they were put in the oven for too long. Â The steak was served with a soggy slice of raw onion on top. Â A bit strange to be honest.
Pasta - the steak came with some linguine in tomato sauce. Tasted like something you'd eat out of a tin can while camping.
Personally I'd give it 2.5 stars. Â Good for the steak and soup, but everything else was ehhh.. Â Service was friendly though.
One last thing - there's a Wi-Fi network here, but the bar lady didn't know the password. Â Maybe you'll have better luck.
Stopped in for dinner recently without reservations, seated right away. The place had on old feel to it...old bartenders, old waitresses, old décor, old people...you get the point. Under 35 drew a fair amount of attention.  Our waitress was obviously brand spankin' new, and it showed throughout. To her credit, she tried her best, and if she didn't know the answer to a q, she found it. If there was a problem in general, she worked toward resolving it. That said, service was a bit on the slow side, however it didn't hinder our experience entirely. Saganaki appetizer was phenomenal; lit tableside and well proportioned. Our entrees went off without a hitch. My 32 oz. porterhouse with accoutrements was excellent. Cooked perfectly, well-seasoned, topped generously with sautéed onions and mushrooms, and paired perfectly with a crushed garlic and horseradish spread and melted Roquefort cheese. More gristle and fat than I cared for, but that was hardly a problem. A hefty overcharge left us scratching our heads at dinner's end, but it was corrected, after complaints were lodged. One of the more unobtrusive, quieter places around. Could be the tops with some renovating and contemporary remodeling. If dining local and thirsty for red meat, I think we found our new place.
Review Source:I LOVE the food here, I'm here practically twice a week. Â Yes the place does need some sprucing up and they are getting there I HEAR but you cannot beat the food for the price. Â I know there used to be two owners and now there is just the one as he bought out the other one. Â Hopefully this is a sign of he doing some sprucing up and making the place match the wonderful food!!!
Review Source:Very cool old school steakhouse. Â Reasonably priced, especially considering the quality and portion. Very relaxed atmosphere, and friendly service. Â The bar area looked interestesting too. Â The menu had a nice variety outside of steaks. Â We had some fried shrimp that were very good. Â A pleasant surprise all around, it's so tucked away, I had never even noticed it!
Review Source:At best 2 stars. Â If you like a 60's atmosphere from a town that just lost their biggest employer then this place is for you. Â The bar area does have a following but the dinner area needs major remodelilng. Â Food - my experience is average at best. Â Service - loved the gum chewing waitress - brought back fond memories of a road side diner somewhere in the sticks of Oklahoma. Â Caveat Emptor - "Buyer Beware"
Review Source:I used to go to Tassos all the time.  Hadn't tried Porterhouse until tonight. I was thrilled to see the same menu from Tassos   Found out the chef bought it. Loved it!  Food was still great.  Decor is nothing special .  I had a filet that was done just the way I wanted and melted in my mouth. Service was very good and staff very friendly. I can't wait to go back.
Review Source:After reading many of the reviews we were hesitant to give Porterhouse a try. We decided to go since we haven't been there since it was Tasso's and we liked Tasso's very much. Â The food was great and the service was FAST and friendly. The menu was identical to Tasso's, and we found out it is the same chef (he's also the owner now). Â We will definitely be back.
Review Source:Man vs Porterhouse! Go!
A rehearsal dinner brought me here - an unlikely setting for a contest. For my meal, I ordered the Porterhouse not expecting anything exceptional. When it came out everyone's jaw dropped. It looked like someone left a purse covered with a healthy slice of onion and mushrooms on my plate. It was the biggest steak I have ever seen by at least 3 times. I would guess it is the size of 4 or 5 regular NY strips. It thudded onto the table like a patio brick. Around it's edges was a beefy and salty juice which was great for dipping.
Now, this wasn't dinner - it was a CHALLENGE! Can I eat this much steak, and will I survive if I do. It was a challenge of both endurance and gastro capacity. I suprised myself when I ate most every pink and juicy morsel. Very fun indeed for a guy who grew up a steak and potatoes guy (now a semi-veg). There were others not quite up to the task, but they had enough steak left over for another meal later. Man 1. Massive Steak 0. It was close though.
I won't say much about the atmosphere, but it's different. It's definately not Ruth Chris. We did see a locally famous Chicago Bear alum, which I am sure comes here because it's the only place serving portions that nurish his massive frame.
We love this place. Â On average we eat here probably once a month or so. Â If you enjoy a good steak without a lot of fuss this is the perfect spot. Â We've been to all of the steak places, Gibson's, Morton's, Chicago Cut, Ditka's, WildFire, Carmichael's, Harry Carey's, Smith & Wolensky, Magnum's, Jameson's, you name it we've been there. Â We've waited at some of those places for hours for a table, only to have a so-so meal that was crazy over-priced. Â Porterhouse is not a trendy spot, it's an old school steak place, so if you expect a chic decor you will be disappointed. Â They have ample seating in two rooms, one room with a cozy fireplace going. Â They start you off with fresh-baked bread; we often have saganaki for an appetizer which is delicious. Â If you're not ordering beef for dinner I highly recommend the medallions of beef appetizer, thinly sliced beef tenderloin with a tasty au jus and garlic bread. Â Yummy. Â The filet absolutely melts in your mouth and is served with a side of bernaise, the fish specials are outstanding, the drinks are solid. Â The entree's come with choice of sides, and you actually get a salad or soup included with your meal (no al a carte here), a crispy fresh dinner salad and special mention for their awesome blue cheese salad dressing. Â Further, they have no problem dealing with big groups. Â The prices are very reasonable for an excellent steak dinner, and you can get a table without waiting forever. Â We've brought many friends and family in and many enjoy going there on their own.
Review Source:This place is a dirty hole in the wall in the middle of nowhere. The restaurant needs major remodeling, or just be completely demolished! Carpets have 2 inches of dust that just flies up on your dishes when you walk. We came in around 8pm and were one of the last groups left before they closed (around 10pm). At around 9:30pm we were almost being chased out by the owners (who just sat there next to us, speaking whatever language, and giving us looks like they had somewhere to be.)
NOW TO THE FOOD!
If you like eating paper, then you will love this place!!!
I have never eaten steak that was this HORRIBLE, and the seafood???? It tasted like it was reboiled in water because all you could taste was water... No flavor at all!!!
Deserts???? now this was the only thing with flavor...If you like molding cake that is!
So I want to thank the people at Porterhouse for not only making this place a filthy mess, but also for the hours of voming after consuming their rotten cuisine!!!
Will never go back and will gladly tell anyone to stayaway from this overrated shack!!! The best thing this restaurant can do for themselves is to close down!!!
Wife and I decided to go out to dinner for steaks; We ended up at Porterhouse; my second experience, and my wife's multiple as she usually has lunch from the afternoon menu. We enjoyed the warm bread with butter and/or oil & cheese. Salads were crisp, soup was very warm, and entree's arrived as we were finishing our soup/salad. I had a T-bone and new potatoes; Wife had chopped steak and new potatoes also. We ended up taking 1/2 each home because the portion(s) were generous, and we didn't want to leave feeling gorged. Server was very friendly, knowledgeable, and seemed to be genuinely concerned for our needs and requirements. I can that we will definitely return, and were most satisfied with the quality of food, service, and ambiance.
Review Source:We were pleased with the service and quality of the food at this place. The staff was very friendly and made us feel welcome. Â The menu is stacked with good options. Â We opted for Perch, Sole, and the Calamari and everything exceeded our expectations. The location is a bit out of the way, which I think contributed to the no wait on a Friday night. We liked the bit of an old Supper Club feel with reasonably priced decent drinks but realize this isn't everyone's cup of tea. Give this place a shot and you won't be sorry. We will be back!
Review Source:I hate to say this was not a good experience. Â Went for a birthday dinner with a party of 7 on a night in April (temp about 40 degrees and windy). Â The first problem was the air conditioning was on FULL blast. Â Everyone at our table had their coats on and we had to ask twice for them to turn it down (or really off since it wasn't warm out). Â
The second problem was the food. Â If you like your steak Medium Rare only, this is the place to be. Â It does not appear they know how to cook steaks at any other temperature which is EXTREMELY disappointing for a 'Steakhouse'. Â Even after sending the steaks back, they came back looking EXACTLY the same. Â The other food items were good (chicken, ribs, tilapia) but the steaks were not cooked as desired, tough and very disappointing. Â Certain things seem to be pre-prepared so you cannot make changes (i.e., the salads come with their standard toppings regardless of what you want on them). Â Baked potatoes were luke warm at best so the loaded baked potato had cold cheese on it (literally sliced cheese broken into pieces). Â One person ordered a margarita on the rocks no salt and it came out frozen with salt. Â Our server did not really seem to be paying attention to anything we wanted. Â The good news is they did remove one of the steaks from the check (since it was sent back twice) and brought out a free dish to substitute but unfortunately it was not enough to save this experience. Â We all decided we will not be back.
We loved Tasso's and went here hoping it would be the same. Nope. The 50's-like steakhouse atmosphere with Dean Martin/Frank Sinatra music playing in the background is gone. Instead we were treated to the sounds of yelling and cussing customers in the bar and no music to drown them out. Service was good, though.
We ordered large strip steaks and were very disappointed. The flavor was good, but both steaks had many pieces of gristle that we had to spit out. I have never before experienced gristle in a strip steak! Â We will not be back.
Was really bummed when I wen to Tassos Porterhouse and saw it was closed... Fast forward to the present and we have Porterhouse Steaks and seafood. The food the the same and the staff is still super friendly. I was very happy when i found out that the cook from Tassos bought this property and reopened this restaurant. The steaks hear are cooked to perfection and come with salad. It is nice to finally go to a nice steak house and not have everything be ala Cart. The bread here is also very good and the cheese and oil make it perfect. All in all one of the best steak houses in the area. I can't wait to go back.
Review Source:Great restaurant. It used to be my regular place until it closed a few years back. I'm so glad to see it open again. Friendly helpful staff and tasty perfectly prepared steaks. It was managed by another guy in it's previous life and he had the restaurant thing down. Once the new managers get a little experience under their belts it will be even better, I'm sure. A little advice to the new owners: Don't be so in-your-face with greeting patrons and avoid the video poker machines :)
4 stars for now. Soon to be 5, I hope.
