My parents and I had an excellent dinner at Prawnbroker. Every part of the meal was just right. We split the smoked fish dip appetizer, which was so delicious, we ended up buying a small container to go from their take-away counter. Both their New England and Manhattan clam chowders were outstanding. I had the Manhattan, and it was chunky and flavorful, with a nice peppery bite to it. We each had different kinds of fish for our entrees, and all were perfectly prepared. I had the wasabi crusted salmon which was covered in teriyaki to temper and compliment the heat of the wasabi. There's nothing really special about the ambiance of the restaurant, but the food is truly excellent. The prices are reasonable, and the service was friendly and prompt. I'm looking forward to a return visit next winter!
Review Source:Good place to get a variety of seafood dinners. They do offer a few meat dishes but their specialty is seafood. Always have daily specials. Love their yellow tail snapper (when they have it) or their sword fish with Gorgonzola and spinach topping, and their house salad with the house dressing - dill ranch.
Review Source:Really fantastic, and worth all the positive reviews. Â
When I told my friends I was coming here for dinner, many of them said "oh, that place has been around forever, it will be full of old people." Â And there were a lot of old people there, but guess what? Â I really don't choose a restaurant based on the age of my fellow diners (and this is Florida, there are old people everywhere).
For $50 including tip, I had an awesome appetizer (the "3+3", which as I recall consists of three clams casino and three oysters rockefeller, highly recommend), a to-die-for entree ("Seafood Fra Diavolo," a whole bunch of different fish cooked in a spicy marinara and served over linguine), and two awesome manhattans. Â Get the Whiskey Creek Manhattan, for $6 it's actually very well priced and has the best presentation of a manhattan I have had in some time.
I came on the Sunday night before Labor Day, and it wasn't as crowded as I thought it might be. Â The service was impeccable, and the whole experience was just perfect from start to finish. Â And the helpings were so generous, I took food home with me, which is incredibly rare for me.
Go to the Prawnbroker!
All I have to say is wow! What a pleasant surprise. We are on our way to Captiva for vacation and saw that Prawnbroker had great reviews on Yelp. Originally from Florida , I am a seafood snob. And second to that is my quest for the perfect dirty martini. We are still trying to decide which rated the highest: The perfectly chilled martini or the oysters topped with caviar , the grouper topped with crabmeat , the escargot or the soft shell crab. Yep, we tried a little of everything;)!! And to make the evening even better was stellar service performed by Michelle and Tim . We will definitely be back.... In the mean time, we are heading to Timbers in Sanibel while we are on the island. It's part of the Prawnbroker family , and Tim will be there Friday ..... GOOD TIMES!!
Review Source:Came here one night for dinner while on vacation and will definitely be back. The decor and furniture is not so modern and just reminds you of an older family restaurant, but the food is delicious and the service is great. My wife and I both got different shrimp dishes and both were excellent. The shrimp cocktail app was awesome. Huge, fresh shrimp, what else could you ask for. Decently priced as well. I will come back here at least once every time I'm in Fort Myers.
Review Source:One of my favorite places to go when I am in Fort Myers. Â My usual is to start with the Oysters Romanoff -- oysters on the half-shell with a dollop of sour cream, caviar and finely chopped shallots. Â Oh... My... Gosh - drooling just thinking about them. Â After that, everything pales. Â The fish is fresh and good. Â The wine list is so-so. Â If you go, ask to sit in waiter, Dave's section. Â You will LOVE hearing him tell you all the side dishes you can order. ;)
Review Source:My all time favorite seafood restaurant. Ever. The shrimp bisque is freaking amazing. I've never tasted anything so delicious. I love the crunchy shrimp too. Breaded in corn flakes and butterflied. Huge gulf shrimp. So tasty! Get a reservation, the snow birds take this place over. Also parking is super limited.
Review Source:I thought this place was really great - just the kind of seafood joint you'd expect in Southwest Florida.
We had a special tequila oyster appetizer that was yummy and unique and I had the lobster tail as an entree plus some very tasty clam chowder.
Keep in mind they close on the early side, around 9:30 p.m.
Not one of my favorite places. The food was so so. The prices are high. Â Now this is just my opinion. Â My friends love this place. Â I had seafood and I really love seafood so I have much higher expectations than a most. Â My friend had the sirloin steak and I tried it... well I know that sirloin is not the best cut of meat but this was a bit tough and bland in flavor. Â He had it cooked Medium so maybe thats what was wrong. Â On a positive note the steak was cooked perfect.
On another positve note, the service was impeccable. Â This place was very clean and the staff were warm and welcoming. Â I will try it one more time and then post another review.
My family has been going to the Prawnbroker for many, many years and the place is always consistent. Â For a family of 5 adults we spent $172, including tip, so the place is not cheap. Â We all had seafood with appetizers but no alcohol. Â Two had Alaska king crab legs, one had surf and turf, one had shrimp scampi and one had a steak. Â Appetizers were oysters Rockefeller, clams casino and fried calamari. Everyone's plate was clean and we left very full and satisfied. Â If you are the Fort Myers area, FMB or Sanibel area this place is worth visiting.
Review Source:I'm really not impressed with this place.
Sure, they got a great menu with lot's of nice choices but nothing has ever made me go "WOW". We've been there about three times. Every time I had great expectations (esp after always waiting for a table for over 30 minutes) but was quickly brought back to reality...
Nothing wrong with this place but also nothing really that stands out. Will probably not be back.
This excellent restaurant has been in business for 27 years. We went for their 27th anniversary special, i.e. 2 meals for $27 - not bad.
We had the seafood fra diablo with fettuccine noodles & crispy shrimp. Both were quite nice, although not of the very highest quality.
This is a good, solid 4-star place.
Oh...where do I begin? This is one of the finest restaurants you will ever visit. I love it. Have been eating here for about the past 20 years and it continues to be my favorite restaurant in SW Florida. The almond shrimp and crunchy grouper are two of my favorites, but I don't think I have ever had any bad food at The Prawnbroker. Lovely atmosphere, great service, and near-perfect food. This place has it all.***UPDATED REVIEW*** OK, since I wrote my first review here I have been back to The Prawnbroker TWICE and both times my fish (different kinds each trip) was undercooked and rather tasteless. Sort of leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth (literally). I don't know what happened because generally you can't miss with The Prawnbroker. So, not sure if they had a new cook/chef and he's gone now or what. If they are back to doing things the way they always had before, then I would definitely recommend it. But, not sure if they are...so good luck if you try it.
Review Source:Stopped here with some friends while in town at a conference. I didn't think it was particularly fancy. The fish I ordered was good, not great, and my friends had similar opinions of theirs. I would say it was a good value for this meal though, having ordered similar dishes at other restaurants. I would return there, but would probably try some other places first to decide how much I liked it. One thing I think that is odd about many seafood restaurants is how little their staff know about which of their fish may be sustainably fished.
Review Source:I moved to Florida in 1995, and this was one of the top restaurants in the area. Â I think since then it's changed hands, changed chefs, and had a few other changes, and now the food just isn't as consistently good. Â It's better than in was for a few years a while back. It was kinda a crap shoot as to whether the chef was in a good mood or not. Â Food was over cooked, seasoned strangely (in a not-good way), and service was bad. Â It's gotten significantly better since then, but the place has definitely suffered. Â
I can honestly say I have never ordered off their regular menu. Â They have a 2 page simple menu that seems really boring when you look at it. Â Then when you get to the table you're handed a legal-size sheet of paper with their daily specials on it. Â Many of them don't change, but this way if they happen to not be able to get a particular fish, they don't have to put it on the menu, or sadly inform customers they're out.
Andrew S. is very right in saying you'll look out of place in shorts, or even jeans. Â I've seen people go in like that, but it's not necessarily the best decision. Â The place is always crazy air-conditioned (like most places in Fort Myers), so bring a sweater. Â
The food is generally good, anymore. Â honestly I haven't been there in a while, so I don't know if they're on an up or down swing. Â If they ever get stable again, they'll do well.
They used to be great...
Update: 8/17/07 Â I'm home visiting my parents for a few weeks and we went here with my grandparents and the food, I am happy to say is good again. Â My salmon (which I almost always order) was cooked to perfection. Â The dill sauce was perfect, and the only real complaint I had was that there was too much dressing on my salad, which most other people wouldn't complain about. Â My mom loved her tripletail, my dad enjoyed his Grouper Matanzas (it was stuffed with shrimp or something).
