Nice little club in the south JoCo area, a part of town that isn't exactly known for its seedy dives. Â As you'd expect, this place is squeaky-clean, and therefore doesn't come across with much bluesy authenticity, but I don't require a lot of grit to have fun. Your mileage may vary. Â Clientele was mostly middle-aged suburban couples out for date night, the wife dressed up more than the huz, that sort. Â We weren't charged a cover.
The one thing I really wasn't fond of: The layout of the place is a long, narrow box shape with a lounge-like area in the front, the bar in the middle, and the stage at the back with some tables crammed in front of it. Â Seating filled up fast on the night we were there (we got the last two seats at the bar) and the standing-room crowd bunched up in the bottleneck of the bar area -- right in front of us, in other words. Â A very drunk couple had quite the make-out session just inches away from us. Â ("I think I'm gonna be sick," my date whispered in my ear. Â Liar, he was actually enjoying it just fine.) Â They really need to rethink the layout.
Decent selection of local beers on tap (Boulevard, Tall Grass, the usual suspects) and the BBQ is AWESOME. Â It actually comes from JR's next door. Â We tried a combo platter & loved it all, enough so that we're making plans for a lunchtime JR's run next week to sample more of their wares.
Sound quality was decent for a smallish room, and they seem to have a wide variety of local talent on the calendar. Â The band we saw wasn't playing the blues at all, more of a funky bluegrass-rock fusion, but they were still quite entertaining. Â Looking forward to returning soon, to kick back with an Ad Astra and hear some more live music. Â A little place like this is great to have in the sanitized JoCo 'burbs, and I hope it thrives.
Checked out a local blues band their the other day. Great music, great beer, and a very friendly staff. I came in late, when they stopped serving food from a nearby bbq place, so the bartender gave me her bag of gummie worms. I highly recommend it to anyone hanging out in the overland park area.
