I've actually never had a drop of alcohol at this pub. I come here for the plate lunches.
About $6-7 for a really good down home cooking style plate lunch. Â Each day has a different special but every day there is a burger or chicken breast sandwich available. Â I like to come on Fridays for the fried catfish fingers. Â Not greasy, very crispy, lightly breaded and freshly fried catfish fingers plus 2 sides and a sweet corn muffin for under $7? Â Yay. Â
Sides are classic diner types- mashed potatoes (real, not box), green beans, pinto beans, potato salad, etc. Â
Some other meals of the day are fried chicken, chicken parmasean, meatloaf, roast beef and maybe a few other items.
Very low key, no frills service. Â Order at the bar, sit at a table. Friendly but you have to ask for what you need. No big deal in my book for those prices.
Bathrooms are clean which makes it not a total dive bar at all.
I've only been to R Place for the sand volleyball league, so my experience is limited, but I've had a great time every night we've been.
It's dive-y, that's for sure, with the lights just dim enough to hide the many faults in the dated and slightly busted decor. But, when I'm going to a bar to jump in the sand, play some volleyball, and enjoy a bucket of domestic beer, I'm not really looking for a classy ambiance. The food I've had has been great - Cajun wings, jalapeno poppers, mozzarella sticks, chicken tenders, and all the lovely fried goodness that comes on the sampler platter. And spicy enough to warrant another bucket of Bud... good job, R Place.
They also have trivia inside on Wednesday nights, which seems to draw a pretty decent crowd, although I typically stay outside on the patio for the games.
I go to R Place to play sand volleyball from late spring until early fall and there is nothing I love more than hanging out with my friends before or after our games, drinking beer, and sitting outside. Â The food is good, especially the burgers and the beer is cheap. Â You can't beat it.
Review Source:I'll start with a caveat. I've only been here for Steeler football games, and the only food I've tried is their Cajun wings. So if you want to gauge it on broader terms I'm not sure I can help. But from my limited experiences, I have to say this is a sweet dive.
When a pitcher of Bud runs you $5.25, you can pretty much guarantee a couple of things. First, that money isn't going to pay for new barstools. The barstools here are either chewed up with the foam coming out or they come emblazoned with Seagram's logos or somesuch. (About 80% of the contents of the bar seems to have come from Anheuser Busch or Miller. It's worth noting that they even have Lite Beer drop ceiling tiles. Now *that's* atmosphere.) Second, they aren't trying to attract a clientele that has a "tasting room". (As if the name "R Place" wasn't something of a giveaway.) And finally, charging $5.25 is a good way to encourage patrons to give at least 75 cents to the poor waitstaff, who probably deserve a few pennies more than that.
So yeah, it's a dive. But it's a pretty good one in that the wings are excellent and they picked the right pro football team and it's plenty spacious, with pool tables and karaoke and live music and whatnot. God bless us every one.
Great place to hang out and not break the bank! Â Live bands Tuesday, Friday, and Saturdays. Â The Big Rock Show every Tuesday night will rock your socks off!
Great bar food with some of the hottest chicken wings around. Pizza's are good too!
They have pool, sand volleyball, darts, and a variety of other games. Plenty of big screen TV's to watch any sporting event and the are home to Louisville's Pittsburgh Steelers Fan Club!
