On one hand, I like the decent selection of taps at the lowest prices I can find. Â Classic dive bar. Â Like the tie-in with the bike shop next door.
Personally, it's a bit too hipster-y for me, but for those that enjoy the hipster crowd, this is a good option to drink cheap. Â Probably the cheapest place to drink in the Campus West area.
Right near CSU, in the Campus West area, sits Road 34. Being part bike shop, part deli, part bar, part live venue, this hybrid runs on good times, college kids and an affinity for pedal power.
Atmosphere:  When we walked in our first impression was " woah that's a lot of bikes"  and we weren't even in the bike shop side. Hung from the ceiling, across the entire bar, are bicycles of every kind. The center of the bar room is dominated by some rustic looking ruff-hewn wood tables, as well as an old school VW bus. Its apparent that this  place is generally a college hangout during the week . While a lot of its appeal comes from it's no- nonsense attitude, a pressure washer and some industrial cleaner would do this place some good.
Service: Â The bar staff was holding down the fort during our visit. They wasted no time while pouring drinks, serving food and taking orders from the tables and they did a stand up job of it.
Drinks: Our favorite feature in the bar, is the chalkboard display behind all the tap handles. The prices and specials are written in chalk describing  a good selection of micros and domestics. They also have a fully stocked bar ready to fulfill the urges of non- beer drinkers too.
Food: The chalk board theme is carried over to the menu with specialty items being written in colorful display above the bar.  This deli style menu is chock- full of sandwiches that are a  little outside of the  typical, local garden variety.  With names like fire in the disco, naked homeless man with a blanket, and lawn jockey, you definitely need to pay attention to what you're ordering.
Loud bar, but wasn't super packed the night I was there. They have a lot of beers that you'd expect to see and stuff that you can find locally as well. Fort Collins Brewery stuff makes its way across town pretty easily from what I can see. Anyways, nice foosball table here, wacky decor in the interior, and a clean men's room. That's about all I can ask for nowadays.
Review Source:The situation I am about to explain makes me wish more people would write reviews on yelp. I was riding to work on my bike and got a flat tire. So I stopped by Road 34 to get it replaced. I waited while the employees (combined 45 iq) replaced my tube. When I paid I rode away and upon trying to stop tried to break. Well, the employees at Road 34 forgot to reattach my brakes.
So I walked the bike back four blocks and the employees "fixed" the breaks By fixed, I mean that they made it so the wheel wouldn't even move. The employees monkeyed around with it for a while and said, "it only rubs a little now, so you're good to go." Sure I was. Now late for work I left and decided to come back the next day for a full tune up.
The next day I told the employees that I wanted a full tune up and my rear brake pads. The employee (a third genius) said, "the pads will be $10 extra, and it should be ready Saturday, but we'll call you."
Saturday came and went, Sunday came and went, and finally on Monday I went in to the shop and asked for my bike. The employee said, "oh, it's been waiting for you since Saturday." Well, I was never called. When I picked it up, the $10 brake pads became $15 dollar brake pads. I asked the employee about this and he said, "I don't know what to say, they are $15." To top it off, my bike now makes a rubbing sound any time I go over 5 MPH.
STAY AWAY!
Here's my breakdown of Road 34:
The good stuff...
Awesome sound system and a fantastic sound guy. Loved the size of the stage and they actually spent a few bucks on their equipment. Great drink selection and reasonably priced. I didn't get a chance to eat, but if looks were any indication, I bet it's pretty good bar grub.
The bad stuff...
The people...sorry folks. The staff were okay, but reeked of pretentiousness (minus the sound guy, he was killer!). Not like they weren't efficient, just seemed like if they didn't know you they didn't like you. Difficult to lump the crowd in to it considering I don't have multiple visits under my belt, but that night it just seemed to have the this "nose in the air" feeling which I find pretty common with most of the hipster hang outs like this.
Overall...I'd make it a 2.5 if I could.
5 stars for the venue
1 star for the people
Not sure I'd call this place a dive bar...if it is, it's by far the cleanest and least smelly I've ever been in. Â Nice variety of beers on tap, with some good (and easy to see!) specials. Â Crowd was your typical college-age , looking for a lay crowd but there was enough seating to be able to have a conversation and not feel crowded. Â Music was great...lots of The Pixies, plus they have TVs for those into sports things. Â No live music when we went, but the stage setup looks decent, and I'd go check out a show if someone good came through.
Review Source:I agree with Tim L. Road 34 doesn't sit right with me either. The staff is not friendly or welcoming and neither are the patrons. Good thing Road 34 is spacious, it needs the room in order to accommodate the large smug cloud inside. Blech!
It's a shame, because this place offers a really nice sized stage and an excellent sound system for live music. The big variety of beers are decently priced and the sandwiches looked tasty. There is ample seating inside and out on the patio.
5 stars for the venue - 1 star for the b.s. attitude = 3 stars
Loud, lumber-jack filled dive bar. Â HOWEVER, $1 microbrews on thursday!! Can life get any better? Â I think not. Â O'Dell, New Belgium, PRAISE THE LORD!
Also, the food is surprisingly decent. Â I ordered a veggie type sandwich with chips, and it was better than some of the other sandwiches I had in town!
The food is pretty good, the beer selection is great, and the prices aren't bad, either. Yes, it's kind of a niche bar with a lot of the vintage bike crowd hanging around looking down at their noses at those less vintage-y and bike-y, but so what? It's not like they're going to jump you out in the parking lot.
The staff is always friendly, and it's about as clean a dive bar as you'll find . . not sure if Road wants to be a "dive," but I don't' think they would mind, either.
Great place for live music (albeit sometimes strange live music - but heck! Â still awesome place for live music in the Fort)....
The crowd is diverse, a plus in my opinion. Â Thursday nights are college pick-up nights and you may want (or not want to) avoid Thursdays.
I had heard several people raving about the nachos. Â So I tried them finally. Â I think they may have been drunk at the time. Â Some of the worst nachos I have ever tried. Â I've had nachos at stadiums that are better. Â The chicken itself had good flavor, but there was little of it. Â The chips were few and kinda soggy. Â
Stay for the music, avoid the nachos.
Something about this place just doesn't sit well with me. The food is great and so are the drinks and the space is a good size. Â
Perhaps it has to do with the crowd that congregates here. Â It's definitely a popular hang out spot for all the college folk and perhaps everyone else has a different perspective on it. Â I think the general vibe of this place is that it's not an overly friendly bar.
People don't seem to mingle much and it seems very cliquey with small groups of people just huddled in close proximity to each other while ignoring everyone around you and taking up seats for hours on end. Â Which of course causes the line up outside to get in.
The sandwiches I found actually quite delicious here and staff that work here generally friendly. Â Bathrooms are bit unkept but I figure that's to be expected in this borderline dive bar.
Having a pool table is a nice touch for a diversion from the giant projected tv and perhaps I would have enjoyed myself if there had been a performance happening on stage.
