Meh. Â This used to be a cute little low key hang out, but during the school year it's a full blown college bar packed with college kids (of course). Â They do have drink specials, but the drinks shrink with the specials. Â For $2.50 you will get a little more than a thimble full of beer. Â I really wish I had taken a picture. Â It's a joke. Â There are way better places on Maple St. Â Go there.
Review Source:I've been going to this spot for years, back when it was the original Bruno's, and  I frequented this location often for rugby parties (I fully deny all reports that I did naked zulu warrior runs around the block even if those reports MAY be true).  This is a classic old neighborhood bar that switches to more of a college bar the later it gets.  I've still got some friends on pool teams that like to hang out here and play (Tulane holds an NCAA championship in billiards from years ago and the fellow that won that for them still shows up to play here sometimes).  They often have some good drink specials and it this bar has an ambiance that has been in the works since the 1930's that the new Bruno's just can't reproduce.
Review Source:Rocco's is a college dive bar.
When a friend suggested this place, I didn't realize it was the old Bruno's.
When we arrived, we were carded at the door. This was a nice touch seeing that we were, by far, the oldest people in a three block vicinity. The crowd milling about was definitely of the younger variety.
As we went in the bar seemed dead. We ordered drinks and quickly realized why. As our drinks were delivered we were told it was last call. Good thing the drinks came in a plastic cup.
I guess the experience was OK considering I wasn't inside very long. The staff was friendly and the beer was cold. I probably need to make a return trip to make a better determination as to my like/dislike of this place. When I do, I will update this review.
Rocco's gets three stars solely because I have to rate it above the Raven. While it's not the worst bar on that corner, it doesn't hold an alcoholic candle to either Bruno's or the Door's. Rocco's is usually too crowded, with too many youth, and too many people no one likes. Please, don't go here.
Review Source:Sure, Rocco's isn't really a bar where you'd want to take your friends who are visiting New Orleans, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's not worth your time. It's a good enough establishment for what it is: a college bar. Within walking distance of both Loyola and Tulane, this bar is a prime location for meeting up with friends... if it's still early. Before 10:30PM it's relatively quiet and manageable. Once 11 comes around, the college kids start pushing in and the dance music is pumped up. If you like that sort of scene, by all means, Rocco's is a great place for you to get a moderately priced drink and get your groove on. If this isn't necessarily what you're looking for, it's still a fun place to be. Arriving before the college crowd enables one to get a good spot either at the bar for easy access to the alcohol or in a booth to have a rousing conversation among friends.
Drink specials include deals like $5 for 3 Miller High Lifes on Thursday, $3 Big Ass Draft on Saturday, $5 Patron shots, and $5 Long Islands and Hurricanes. Obviously, if you ultimate plan is to get drunk, Rocco's is for you.
I guess this is where you end up when you let the youngest person of the group (who "forgot" their ID) pick the place.
Calling this bar "collegiate" is being generous. I had a hard time believing that anyone in this bar was over the age of 18.
The girls dancing on the bar, coyote ugly style, dousing the crowd with cheap liquor was a nice touch. The girls falling off the bar too drunk to function was even better.
Nice idea in theory, but this bar was a hot, sloppy, mess.
Given that this is a college bar, yes. it gets really collegiate at night and on the weekends.
But since it changed management, the place is not bad during the earlier hours before the kids stream in. Good drink specials (obviously) and not a bad place to pop by in the afternoon after a day of shopping or tanning at Solaris, which is right next door.
It is what it is.
So this replaced the "Old Bruno's" - a couple of years ago and it's pretty much the same. Â Slightly cramped and divey, but yet with that college ambiance - being that it's so close to all the universities. Â
Since it changed owners/management - Rocco's a slightly bit upgraded from Bruno's. Â Feel slightly cleaner, better drinks (maybe a few cents more expensive or the same), less of that campy feel.
It's still tends to get pretty loud and rowdy on weekends, but it seems like a great deal of the hardcore Old Bruno's crowd has abandoned this particular address, as it's not AS hopping as it used to be.
There's an add-on covered patio structure in the back that's sometimes utilized for beer pong and kegs . . . I guess if you want to disengage from the immediate crowd?
I personally don't care much for Rocco's as I didn't care much for Old Bruno's. Â The location was very convenient for me and my friends, but it always felt like too young of a crowd, too may severely intoxicated loud-mouth kids (I've been one of them, I admit). Â As aforementioned, it does tend to get pretty cramped so it kind of sets off my claustrophobia sensor at times.
Can't say I'll suffer if I never come here again.
