STOLEN CREDIT CARD! The worst establishment I have ever been to. Was in for 1 drink with a group on a not busy night, our drunk waitress disappeared to the bar to never return and then the waitress that went to cash us out claimed to have lost our credit cards 30 minutes later. And that was only after we had to go search for her...two credit cards were stolen and the management was unhelpful at best. He claimed, "well, these things happen." I do not recommend this place to ANYONE!

Food is still delicious and the drinks are super cheap...
but something is definitely up with the service lately.
Past few times we have been here we have felt a bit ignored and forgotten about.
Hopefully these were just a few "off" visits.

Best kept secret in RO for food. Dive bar with absolutely awesome kitchen. Corned beef sandwich is best for miles. Soups delicious and made from scratch (but all very salty).  Best Greek salad in town for lunch.

    Absolutely horrible service!!!!
Sara-  she was our waitress at 7 pm on a Friday night.  It was slow but she was so completely inattentive and lacked all communication and service skills!!  When she happened to come by the table once on a long while, she would never make eye contact or wait for an order.  When we finally gave up and went to the bar to get the glass for my beer that Sara forgot, the 4 people behind the bar that were not busy serving anyone also refused eye contact and asking if I needed anything.  Again, at 7 pm business was slow.  Why was service SO bad?!
There are more details I could share... But the overall point is that service is HORRIBLE!!!

Had pizza and chicken strips. Pizza toppings were good but crust was premade and bought. It wasn't made fresh. Still not bad as bar food. Chicken strips were large and very tasty.

The Rock on 3rd is a good place to go with friends on the weekend if you don't mind a little music in your ear and having to speak a little louder with your friends. After that it's a pretty fun place to be. They have drink specials and a pretty huge beer selection. I would recommend to a group of friends looking to relax out in Royal Oak.

The Rock is one of those hidden gems of Royal Oak. It looks pretty dive-y - the inside IS dive-y.  But sometimes you're in the mood for no-frills pizza and beer. This is the place.

It's dark inside. There are dart boards in the back and the game is always on. You get the picture.  Wear your jeans and grab your buds. It's THAT place.

The cool thing, though, is if you like that sort of place but you need to impress a new date, but not go too fancy schmancy, this place could accommodate you in the summer months. There's an outdoor patio that really fancies up the place - lattice, greens, pretties...it's NICE. And you can say you know this great little place in Royal Oak because you know you've gotten drunk here with the dudes, throwing darts and being obnoxious (fellas, she doesn't have to know that!).

Service has always been great. Parking is the basic Royal Oak nightmare. I've always gotten the pizza which my boyfriend said was better than Comos. He's crazy, but it IS good.

    Just go. You'll like it!

We used to go here a bit when we lived in RO a few years ago.  The burgers are pretty good and priced right.  Kind of a dive bar.

I don't why anyone would go to the Rock on Third.   We went there last week and I am just now feeling better after eating a bad meal.   Their on tap beer had a skunky smell to it too.   Also, I have heard that I am not the first to have gotten ill there.   A couple of the folks I work with had the same problem.

The beer selection is great - lots of local brews, which I really love. Their burgers are also pretty good. I much prefer to come here and chill with friends on a quieter night, sometimes the place can get quite loud.

The first time I visited The Rock on 3rd was last summer when I was one of only a few customers in the bar/restaurant. At that time, I had good service. Last night, my friends and I visited The Rock on 3rd again. This time, however, the bar/restaurant was busy but not so busy that we couldn't walk right in and get a table. Unfortunately, a table is all we got. We sat there for approximately 10 minutes without being acknowledged. No "Hello. I'll be right with you." No menus. No waters. No drink orders. Nothing. Nada. We saw a guy in a red Rock on 3rd shirt walk by twice, but he didn't even glance at us. A server in a black Rock on 3rd shirt didn't come anywhere near our table until we finally got up and walked out. As we walked passed the server, she looked at us with a surprised look. What? She thought we'd wait forever when Royal Oak is teeming with other options? Despite the good beer list, I doubt I'll be back after this experience. I wasn't thrilled with the fatty menu before. Now, this service experience was The Rock on 3rd's demise in my book.

I don't venture to Royal Oak that often because I find it over crowded and trendy; however, it is a  nice half way point for my friends and I.  We were off and walking around when we thought we would try  The Rock.

I'm glad we stopped in.  the bar had a nice atmosphere and would be a place that I would come back to.  We didn't try the food but the beer was good and plentiful.  the waitstaff was hard to track down but it was a relaxing night out on the town.

Overall - nice selection of beer and nice atmosphere.  Don't plan on getting served unless you seek someone out of go to the bar.

I'm not sure how this place rates for an evening on the town, but we stopped in for a burger on cold weekend afternoon between errands and it was pretty nice.

The food was solid but not especially memorable. I had a burger that I liked more than some of the more expensive places nearby, but I can't remember what my husband had.

I think we'd like to try it again in the summer so that we could sit on the patio.

One of my biggest complaints with Royal Oak bars usually is that they are far too intense on the nights when all I want is a chill atmosphere where I can actually enjoy my friend's company. Most places in the area choose to turn into mini night clubs after a certain point in the night, which invariably results in being stuffed into crowed rooms with the same twenty pop songs blaring in the background.

Rock on Third is an exception to the normal scene in the city, and that is why it gets four stars. That, and the outstanding beer menu that they boast, of course. There aren't many other places I know where you can get Belgian beers such as Delirium and Duvel. I haven't been to a bar that has a larger beer selection than Rock on Third does.

As I usually only go to this bar after dinner, I haven't experienced too much of their food menu. The one item I have gotten, the steak bits with garlic bread, were very good and were something I would order again.

If you are looking for someplace which is laid back, that has good beer and good specials, Thursday's they have $1 bottles, and is usually open enough to get tables and drinks easily, Rock on Third is a great bar.

A great neighborhood bar to stop in for a drink. I dig the new patio seating. They've got s couple dart boards (electronic only) and a juke with a couple touchscreens around. The beer selection is very accommodating and the service is generally very good. Can't speak to the food but what I saw leaving their kitchen looked pretty good.

I base my rating on chicken wings alone.  I just love their style.  When I'm craving some, this is my place to go.  The fact that they have a pretty decent beer selection to wash them down is just icing on the cake.

I love The Rock...I really do.  Their food is amazing....the BBQ wings are my absolute favorite in the Royal Oak area.  Pizzas are fantastic, drinks are cold, and the prices are great.

    HOWEVER.

The service SUCKS at this place.  Real bad.  Every time we end up going here it's an extra 45 minutes because the service is so slow.  Last night I was there with the BF and the server was actually pretty prompt until she brought our food - then...she disappeared.  The door man actually had to take another table's drink order, and as he did she walked up to him in front of everyone and said "Oh...so are you taking this table now??" in a totally snotty tone.  Then she disappeared again (we'd been waiting for the bill for around 25 min by this time) and the door man went to get us a box - while he was getting that, she came by and asked if we needed a box and we said no thanks, the door guy got it and she goes "Ohhhkay" and walked away, not even asking us if we wanted our bill.  FINALLY after another 10 minutes or so she came back and asked if we wanted anything else and we said just the bill please and she goes "Oh, well he didn't say if you wanted anything else so I didn't know" in a completely bitchy tone.  Ummmm he's HELPING you with your job!!!!  I wanted to tip him instead!  Anyways, she's lucky the BF is a great tipper, I think most people would have left her about 10%.

I know we'll be back because we love the food but seriously Rock...get some better servers!!!

Why Can't I Give This Place NO Stars?

If you're looking for terrible service and a catty bitch to wait (or not, but just pretend) on you, this is your place. I was at The Rock on Third earlier this evening - a Sunday - with a friend and we had an unpleasant experience. After standing around near what we thought was the hostess area for about 10 minutes two guys sitting at the bar told us they had sat outside for about 20 minutes with no service and ended up going to the bar. We flagged down the bartender and he was very nice, getting us our drinks and telling us someone would be out on the patio to give us menus shortly. That never happened.

My friend went inside and asked the same bartender for menus, who promptly brought them to us, looking around for the wait staff that should probably have been there. He ultimately took our order and brought us the food when it was ready. In the meantime, a woman who obviously worked there was seated outside at the table next to us; she was greeted with a huge smooch by the bar back who swept in to our space to grab an empty glass but didn't bother to check on us. This "character" swarmed around their table doing not much else but making idle chit chat the entire time we were there. Out of the blue a waitress came by and told my friend to "get out of the way" (meaning walkway) because (imaginary) "staff and customers" had to be able to get through and she was blocking the way. She said it in a rather rude way, too. There was no customer service capability in her voice.

Not long after that exchange I flagged down the aforementioned bar back and asked for our bill...which was brought to us not a short time later by someone we'd never seen. He told us the amount and I asked to see the bill, making sure it was actually ours. I asked to see the manager and he told us he was the manager. I told him I'd been coming to this place for about 5 years and it was the worst service ever (and honestly, it was). I also asked if the women at the next table getting great service were employees, which he confirmed. He was apologetic but still snatched my credit card saying if I decided to come back he'd take care of me and that it would be better; I wasn't born yesterday and hardly believe that.

We ended up at The Rock because it was the only place with an open patio seat...and now I know why. On the way out the bitchy off duty wait staff made nasty comments about our clothes and shoes, more than likely as a comeback for me expressing my displeasure with the entire experience. This was so not worth the price of a quesadilla and two glasses of wine. I will not be back and don't recommend it to anyone, at all, ever.

Very crowded on weekends at night with its share of Royal Oak's nightlife. But I occasionally pop in at happy hour. Recently stopped in for a couple cheap pints and a burger. Place was dead, which is fine by me during the day. Cute waitress was polite,  efficient, and friendly enough, I guess.

As for my meal: the side of roasted sweet and white potatoes seemed to be hand cut and were really good--better than my hamburger, in fact. The burger was on the small side and obviously a pre-fab patty from the freezer. As a huge fan of bar burgers, I found this unforgivable.

The Rock is generally the place I take my friends from out of town when they come to visit for a day. Service is great, staff is always friendly, and the food is reasonably priced. I always spend a lot of time browsing
through their wide selection in their beer menu. It's a great place to go with friends to catch up over beers and a bite to eat.

I was here on New Years Eve, 2010, and it was a good time. I'd been there many times before, as they are widely know in the area for their $1 bottle beers on Thursday from 8pm-10pm (my information may be dated).

It's a small, tastefully decorated bar with a small dance floor. Nothing overly fancy about it, and it's as unpretentious as the bulk of it's clientele.
When they run those beer specials, it can get crazy, college-bar crowded. Whether or not I consider that a good time depends on my mood, but there is no doubt that is part of it's appeal.

On the other hand, I actually kind of like the fact that during the week, it's not very crowded, and that you can meet someone there for a conversation and a drink.

Most of my knowledge of the food has come mostly from the other reviews- I've only had one thing there, I believe, and it was a long time ago- it's just not a place people usually go for food.

Again, it's big selling point for me is the casual atmosphere, especially being in the heart of Snobville. Also usually have decent service there too, even when the bar was really crowded.

A group of us decided to come here last night.  I honestly can't remember the last time I was here.  Probably well over a year.

Anyhow, what stuck out for me this time was they have a very good selection of craft beers from Michigan and other regions in the US and the world.  I can't remember if they have always had this, I'm thinking yes, but not as big of selection.  They had a nice selection of winter seasonal beers like Great Lakes Christmas Ale, which is delicious by the way.  I was REALLY excited that they had Rogue Dead Guy Ale, probably my favorite beer at the moment.  The best part was that it was only $3.50/bottle when it's nearly $3.00 at the store.  SCORE!  $3.00 for a Miller Lite or $3.50 for a Dead Guy Ale.....hmmmm....what do you think wins?

Any time you can drink good beer at relatively low prices, I'm all in.

Good casual sports bar but it seemed like we landed on "Motown night" since that's all they played.  I guess if nobody puts money in the jukebox, it selects it randomly but perhaps somebody was secretly trying to torture us.   One thing to note is that the music can get really loud in here so it's difficult to talk to each other.

I ordered the nachos with beef and they were just like cafeteria nachos with really ground up meat.  As usual with nachos, there was a lot of chips and not enough toppings so I ate the top half.  As for beers, I went light and had a Woodchuck apple cider (yum).  Blue Lights were $1 that night!  Only in Detroit can you find such a deal.

Service was really good.  Our server came by pretty often to get us beers and see if we needed anything else.

Adequate number of TVs playing different things: baseball, hockey, women's MMA, and a sports news channel.  Not all the TVs are big so you'll have to find a good spot to sit at.  If you sit on the booths, they are super high so you'll have dangling feet (even you tall guys).

Since it's mid-September, this may well be my last 'outside' dining experience and I'm a little sad that it didn't end with a bang.

I really like the location of this place.  It's in downtown RO but not right along Main Street so you don't have every passerby and their dog staring at you and your food.

The hubs and I ended up here after attempting to get into Lockhart's.   An hour wait for 2 famished people will not make a pleasant couple so we ventured over to the The Rock - of course talking like Sean Connery the whole time.

We sat along their outside sidewalk and ordered an Erdinger and a Spaten.   Both pretty good German beers and they have an excellent selection of beer from all over the place.   Neither of us enjoy drinking with our meal so we ordered 2 waters as well.   Unfortunately we're still waiting for those.

I ordered a cup of chili and a taco salad.   Hubs ordered a turkey sandwich.   Nothing stood out as spectacular or even very good.   Nothing was horrible, but fairly average.    Everything on their menu looked like typical bar food.   Potato skins, pizza, sandwiches...etc.   All the things you crave after you've had a few too many.

Our server was friendly and not slow, but the water thing bugged us.   Also, they take your credit card when you order to keep as a tab, but then handed us the check.   Um, I'd love to pay but you have my credit card at the bar.    That back and forth process seemed unnecessary and avoidable.

The Rock did fill our incredibly empty bellies so we walked away feeling satisfied.   I would probably consider it more of a late night fix than a place for dinner, but I would definitely go back and work my way through that beer menu.

Eh, it was ok. Service was eh, ok. Food was a  little disappointing. Usual bar fare without flair. Chips and salsa which seemed to be out of a jar. Got a salad...my mistake, greens out of the "big ol bag o greens" you get at your local supermarket. What can I say, do have a beer and watch a game I would give it more stars, but to eat and drink, sadly two is as high as I can go.

If you're into livelier, happening places - then avoid this place on slow nights - it's pretty dead. But on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday - it's a good place to combine some cheap drinks with bar food before going out for the night in Royal Oak. There's decent drink specials, but the food is mediocre. You can probably get 3-4 drinks for under $20 and some decent food for under $10. Our waitress was brief and bordering on impatient & rude but oh well!

This place is only good Thursdays-Saturday. Especially Thursday when they have $1 beers and it's packed with lots of interesting people.

I went there on an off night and there were hardly 10 people there not including my group. We ordered food...which was a bad idea.... My reuben was ok but the corned beef tasted more like generic deli meat, not hearty at all and the sauerkraut was really dry and stringy (my bf called it "confetti"). My bf ordered a cheese steak sandwich w/ fries... which was a train wreck. The meat was burnt to a crisp and salty as hell! Adding ketchup didn't counteract the saltiness one bit. And the portion of fries  was so small, i thought they counted each stick before plating it as if there was a limit on them...

Anyways it's good for beers on Thursdays, don't go there for food, ever!

I've only gotten food at this place one time, during the Wine Stroll, and the pasta we tried was pretty good.  But what I like about The Rock is it's a fun place, in a good location, that is especially good if you are going out in a larger group.  It's a bar with some games and TVs.  It's not too big a space.  It often gets crowded.  But what this place has to offer is lots of seating.  So even though you can easily go there, socialize, and schmooze, you can also sit around with friends or whomever and just hang out.  It's a good mix or a chill bar and a more interactive bar.  What's even better, is that it's unique to downtown Royal Oak, which is full of places to go out, but none are like The Rock.  In sum, I love this place.

The Rock is in a great location.  Looks interesting from the outside. Quaint in the inside.  I came here when I was hungry. That was mistake #1. Not  the best place for a satisfying dinner.  Mistake #2 was ordering the taco salad.  I should know by now most taco salads are going to be so-so at non-mexi places. But, can't complain about the cheep beers!

Watched UM-MSU football and tried to look away from the Spartan fans weeping in their beers.  I loved the $2.50 pints of Labatt after paying $5.50 for the same thing at a nearby bar.  The bar has MegaTouch if you're into zoning out .

I went to the Rock on 3rd with to get a little buzzed before a Wes Anderson movie.  We chose it simply because it was close by where we were.  It is really unassuming from the outside, just a small little boxy place.  But inside, it is really pleasant, with a great vibe around the bar.  The pints of Newcastle were effective, and the service was pleasant.  The crowd seemed pretty chill.  This might become my fave. bar in Royal Oak.  The only gripe I have is that it is a little smoky.  I wish we'd follow NYC, DC, Seattle, and even Ohio, and get rid of smoking in our bars.
