The husband and I went here for Valentine's Day. We chose this place because we love good steak and it's close to the Bank of America theatre, where we had a show after dinner. The restaurant has sophisticated and romantic decor and two floors.
The food and drinks are very delectable! I ordered the filet mignon, which has absolutely delicious. My husband ordered the strip steak, which he said was scrumptious as well. He also ordered an Old Fashioned (bourbon), which he said was one of the best he'd ever had. At the end of the meal, our waiter handed me a single red rose, which I thought was such a romantic and lovely touch.
I took off a star because when I called to make a reservation, the lady on the phone told me that a 6 pm reservation would be ample time for our 7 pm show. That was definitely not the case. My experience at the restaurant would have been nicer if we didn't have to rush in order to be on time for the show.
We ate here prior to going to a show around the corner. Our waiter was great about making sure we stayed on time. The asparagus soup that was on special was delicious. The bone-in filet wasn't my favorite I've had, but it was good, although slightly over-charred. The mushrooms with which it was served were great.
Review Source:Probably the best service I have ever received at a restaurant. Our server was knowledgeable, friendly, funny, and really on top of things. He suggested drinks for us right away that we both loved and helped us pick out good choices on the menu. He stopped back the right amount of times and was really sweet and nice to us.
The food was also really, really good! I went with the brick chicken, while my boyfriend opted for the sea scallops. We also got a side dish of potatoes to share, as suggested by our server. The dishes were both great. The scallops were huge and delicious, and my chicken was moist and had great seasoning/sauce. It was also huge, it was an entire De-boned chicken! I was so glad my boyfriend helped me out a little with it! Since we were just visiting town, there would have been no way to take it home as left-overs which would have been a shame. As it was, we only had to leave a small amount of it behind. I would highly suggest this dish to anyone going to Rosebud Prime!
The bread basket was another highlight of our meal. It was large, and had several different types of delicious breads to try. As a serious bread lover, my boyfriend was overjoyed with the basket. It did have the most variety I have ever seen in a free bread basket, and all the types were very good.
I would go back here again for the food, but it gets 5 stars and my recommendations because of the service!!
Rosebud is a bit of an Oasis. This part of the loop is painfully lacking on good dining. The cocktails and apps are as solid gold as white wingtips with a suede suit. The steak is great but can't match the likes of Chicago's competitive market (Cut, Maestro's, etc.). It's tough out there for a steakhouse.
Review Source:I love popping in here after work. The service is consistently amazing, the food is delicious, and- oh yeah- complimentary appetizer buffet!!!
As for the dining area, it's busy but never too crowded, and you're not claustrophobically close to the people around you. Nothing kills a romantic meal or trying to wind down after a long day at the office like having to talk over the conversation from the table next to you.
Highly recommend for a nice dinner in the Loop!
The waiter initially wouldn't leave us alone. I was there with a business associate, and we wanted to relax for a bit to catch. Finally, when we were ready to order, the waiter couldn't be found! Aside from the service, the food was outstanding. Sea bass and dover sole were excellent! I will go back!
Review Source:Am I glad I didn't order the steak. However, I'm not so glad that I ordered the Mahi Mahi Tuna "Asian" style. This meal consisted of 6 small pieces of tuna that were sliced in circles to resemble sushi, which basically turned into a 38 dollar tuna sushi plate. I wouldn't bitch about it if it were actually full filling, maybe if it came with rice or some reasonable side that went along with the Asian theme. The problem with this restaurant is they make you order a side in addition to the main entree. The cost can be pretty nuts and I guess this is where they try to justify themselves as being a fancy restaurant. My girl ordered the Steak Salad. Her steak came out chewy and the salad was tasteless. The waitress was cool about the fact that she didn't like it and took it off the bill.
Our meal was 50 dollars at the end of the night. The only cool thing about this place was the live music and the tv screens. Other than that this place would be a lot better if they included sides with meals. I can't eat sushi tuna with say corn, that's just weird.
In short, if you're being taken here (and not paying your own way) by your employer, then it's fine. Â If you're on your own dime, go elsewhere.
My sister and I came here after a matinee show and some shopping. Â It wasn't my first choice, but she wanted a steak and we wanted to stay in the Loop, so here we were. Â We arrived for an extremely early dinner at 5:30 and were seated promptly. Â Things went downhill quickly from here.
We placed our app and entree order all at once and were told our crab cakes would be out "momentarily." Â Our crab cakes (which were really good, and came in a very generous sized portion) arrived nearly 40 minutes after we were told they would arrive "momentarily." Not awesome. Â Did I mention we were starving and hadn't eaten since breakfast? Â Â
At around 6:45 our filets came (mind you, we were seated at 5:30, so it's been well over an hour at this point). Â We also had an order of au gratin potatoes. Â The filets were good and cooked as asked, but the potatoes were hands down the worst potato dish I have ever had in a restaurant. Â I could have cooked au gratin potatoes out of a box from the grocery store and enjoyed them 100% more. Â Either Prime's recipe for au gratin potatoes needs a complete overhaul or someone in the kitchen confused the sugar and the salt containers and accidentally added a bunch of sugar to our potatoes because they were entirely flavorless and a touch sweet, which is gross. Â Au gratin potatoes should not be sweet.
I'm not sure why we even bothered to think about dessert but we ended up ordering one to share, and it was unremarkable as well. Â Oy.
I will say I've been here once for lunch and once for dinner (both times with my company, and on the company's dime) and  it was fine.  But if I'm shelling out $80 for my half of the tab, I need something better than sugary au gratin potatoes and super slow service. Â
Oh yeah, forgot to mention as we were leaving that the waiter told us to enjoy our show. Â Um, we weren't going to a show, which you might have known had you asked. Â So maybe they dragged dinner out on purpose? Â Not sure. Â Either way, I won't be back.
I went to Rosebud Prime with friends tonight before heading to the theater, and had a fantastic experience. We had reservations at 5:30, and unfortunately our entrees didn't come out until 7 PM. However, the server comped us our entire meal, which we didn't expect. It was obvious that their kitchen was backed up, and this was a very generous way to rectify the situation. Â And..the food was very good. I will be back.
Review Source:2012 work Holiday party 24 people, private room on the 2nd floor! WOW! Rosebud has been doing this in Chicago for so long they can provide a first class experience with their eyes closed. Coconut Shrimp and Lamb Chops appetizers were perfect and plenty! Seared Seas Scallops huge and cooked perfectly! Service was great! Great location! I loved the entire evening!
Review Source:We went to a nice dinner at Rosebud Prime before a show at The Goodman. I'm here to tell you I've eaten at some of the best steak joints around... Mortons, The Palm, David Burkes, Smith & Wollensky, & Ruths Chris to name a few, and Rosebud Prime was one of, if not the best of the bunch. The seafood was fantastic as well. We spent almost $300 between the two of us, but we had a most decadent meal served by a very friendly and accommodating staff. The NY strip and petite filet were equally delicious. My girlfriend wasn't crazy about the au gratin side too much, but that was really the only thing that could be construed as negative about the whole experience. We'd go back, most likely for a special occasion.
Review Source:Every so often when we go out for lunch Chris is in "need" of a steak. Â Usually, we end up at Rosebud Prime on these occasions. Â
Sometimes we sit at the bar, sometimes a table, either way the service is always good. Â The server or bartender are always helpful and available when we need them. Â They don't bother us too much. Â Last time the server was even ready with a few snarky jokes, mostly at my expense, which is always welcome with Chris and I. Â
The food is always very good as well. Â The often have a crab caprese salad as a special, which we usually share as an appetizer. Â It's huge, it could easily be a meal. Â Last time around I had a cheeseburger and it was good, way too much food for lunch. Â My drink of choice as Rosebud is usually a dirty martini, always tasty. Â I don't think I've ever had a steak here, but Chris swears they are fantastic. Â
The dining room is slightly on the stuffy side, but it's very pretty.  An old school fancy-pants vibe, which suits the surrounding businesses well.  This is  a good place for a nice lunch or a pre-theater dinner.
First meal this Chicago trip had to be a good burger...we decided that Rosebud Prime would be our spot to grab a burger and we had a nice walk from the Intercontinental. Â We walked in and sat at the bar. Â The place looks very much like a steakhouse. Â Dark wood, tables all throughout, a large bar and there's a second level too. Â Looking around it's mostly suits that were here or older clientele. Â You could definitely bring a date here and be tucked away in a corner somewhere for a good night :)
The bartender came over, took our order and in no time flat we had our burger. Â First impression was that the burger had some good ground beef! Â The rest of it was absolutely delicious and the portion was large. Â The fries were cooked perfectly.
We ended up chatting with the bartender for an extended period and he was a great guy. Â He gave us some great recommendations on night life for our trip and we ended up going to some great places. Â All in all a great first meal in Chicago. Â
I'd definitely come back for a burger. Â With all the steakhouses in town I would definitely try one of them before Rosebud though as the price seemed high...or maybe that's just the average in Chicago but I'd definitely hunt for what's the best one in that price range.
I have had take-out here for lunch about 5 times now. The trading desk I work on always orders the burgers and we view it as our luxury take-out spot. Â I think it is a top burger in the city behind Kumas Corner. The rest of the menu looks solid.
In regards to the restaurant itself I don't have much to say because I haven't dined in. I usually go pick up the order because the hostesses are very good looking. This place is pretty upscale and its always filled with "suits" during lunch which is just an observation (could be good for a date).
YUM! Â I enjoyed a very tender steak here in addition to delicious sides. Â If you like cheese, I highly recommend the creamed spinach as a side. Â It's just spinachy-cheesy-creamy goodness. Â The house salad also had a really delicious dressing ... so good I wish I could make it myself. Â Â From the hostess to the bus boys, the service was also outstanding. Â Anyone that came to our table was polite and attentive.
Plus, they get an extra star for the amazing outdoor seating atmosphere. Â The lights and heaters make it such a cozy place to eat well!
The best part of our evening was the attentive waiter. Â Everyone from the valet to the hostess to the waiter were smiling and welcoming. Â Lovely atmosphere. Â The meal was good. Â Not the best I've had downtown, but good. Â I think the prices are high for the quality of some of the menu items, but you also pay for your atmosphere. Â Here is what our group of 7 had: Â Large Filet - was okay. Â Filet Oscar - very good. Â Shrimp cocktail - amazing! Â Lake Superior Whitefish - very good but the sauce was too heavy. Â Bacon mashed - well of course that is always good. Â Jalapeno hash browns - not spicy at all and over cooked. Â Cheeseburger - big hit. Â Mussels - delicious! Â Escargot - good but small portion. Â Desserts were all average..nothing stood out. Â Overall a nice night but expect to pay!
Review Source:I went here for lunch since it's right next to where I am working while in Chicago. Â I had noticed it is always packed. Â I went alone so didn't think about a reservation (which I needed) but I was able to sit at the bar which is fine with me.
At first I was thinking pretentious all the way, I was in jeans and polo and the whole staff is in suits bow ties and nice dresses (not all at the same time, women had dresses etc :). Â Once I was able to order and some locals sat near me that knew the bartender it got much more relaxed. Â Bartender even shook my hand and thanked me as I left.
Had a seafood salad that was on special, pretty good. Â Salmon, scallops, lobster and shrimp. Â I will post the pic. Â I will go back for sure.
This is Chicago. This is a steakhouse. If its bad why would it survive through hundreds of reviews, so why are you reading this unless you are a fan?
Rosebud is not bad. I loved the bone in rib eye but still have a hard time figuring out what the "bone-in" fillet is, I know. I know, you just leave it on the t- bone to effect the flavor. However the marketing concept is bizarre.
Food was great, service was superb... very professional, abiance was fine. The wine list was typical steakhouse. I liked my bone in rib eye allot.
I just didn't see much to propel it above the rest of the class "a" steakhouses.
Fairly typical steakhouse. Â I felt uncomfortable when I first arrived because I was standing in the bar area but there was nowhere to sit, and while I was trying to flag down a bartender, no one was exactly excited to help me out.
When my friend and I were seated, we were right by the kitchen entrance/exit, which was rather inconvenient for our purposes as we were trying to catch up that night.
We had lobster cocktail and the scallops for appetizers. Â Both were great, but we were kind of taking our time with them and while we both had lobster on our plates the waiter took away the sauces...awkward turtle. Â Good thing I'm fat and didn't care about asking him to put them back down. Â We also ordered a wine during our appetizers that didn't come out for about 20 minutes.
My compatriot got the cioppino risotto. Â The waiter recommended it and I was glad I didn't follow the rec. Â It was way soupier than a true risotto should be. Â It was a good cioppino but when advertised as a risotto I expect more creaminess. Â I had the petite filet and it was pretty much a standard filet.
This was fine, and I like other Rosebud restaurants, but if I was going to go to a steakhouse, I'd go elsewhere in Chicago.
Went there on business after seeing good reviews here, but it didn't appear that they liked traveling businessmen. Â We were sat in a table by the door that was in the way of everyone walking by, and the experience was very annoying. Â Service was a bit snooty and abrupt. Â Very disappointed with their name that they didn't have Prime Rib at all. Â Had the most expensive steak on the menu, and found it totally lacked flavor. Won't be back.
Review Source:Went here with my boyfriend on a Saturday evening to celebrate a special occasion. When he initially made the reservation he had asked to be seated in a secluded Booth/table near the piano player and when we arrived were seated on the opposite end of the dining room. Not to mention it was along a wall in between the 2 kitchen doors, I could hear plates clanking in the background.
The server seemed inexperienced and scatter-brained. I was served my steak a good four minutes before my boyfriend and when the server took notice she stated, "clearly, I have no idea what happened" without offering any apologies. It was only after she took notice that his meal, our sides and much needed steak knives were brought out. In addition to the lack luster service, we overheard our server speak to another waiter about sales and apparently some promotion/contest the staff must've been having... I don't think it can get mote unprofessional than that.
The food was good, nothing out of the ordinary but nicely prepared
Guess I just expected more for the price and old-Chicago, ritzy atmosphere. Wouldn't go back nor recommend.
I wouldn't be surprised if Sinatra himself came singing around the corner at this place. Well, despite the whole resurrection thing but this place is like an old timey Italian steak house sitting in a high-rise in the middle of downtown Chicago.
My friend and I were treated very well. We were sat at one of the cool tables at the back and not far from the gentleman playing the piano.
The food and the cocktails were great! Take the advice of the waiters like we did...they know their stuff!
Def looking forward to my return visit!
You cannot beat the atmosphere or neighborhood.
We went here because we were going to see a show at the Goodman (and it was the nicest close restaurant around.)
What a gorgeous surprise! Â We were greeted by friendly faces and led to an elegant table and then.... the real fun began!
Our fun had a name: Harold. Â The minute he approached our table, I knew it was going to be a great night. Â Harold E. was simply amazing. Not only was he a delight he was very accommodating with my finicky and difficult order.
When my dinner arrived prepared wrong, he fixed the problem quickly. Â
My scallops were delish (not swimming in the butter sauce yet still bursting with favor! They were not under-or-over-cooked!) ---I would be strapped to the treadmill right now if they were--thank you, Harold for relieving me of that!
We could have missed our show-time, because Harold's personality was bright and entertaining.
Instead of missing the Goodman show, we decided that Rosebud will make it to our list of places to bring our boring friends. At least Harold will be there...
Only been here once  and it was before  a Musical,  It was nice place inside , the wait staff was friendly and very professional , The price was probably what it should be at ,
Maybe a little high on the Dover sole $47.00  come on!  needless to say  I had the dover sole  and it was very good , not the best I had , My daughter had a burger  which was good , she had a side of Mac and cheese which was  really good , my wife's steak was really good  , The Ribs that one of my sons had were good  and the other son had the Brick Chicken was really good , all in all  the food was really good  not  the best ever . but I would say probably what I expected. , Friendly People, Good food. And the Piano player was a nice touch
My family and I ate here last night after watching Fiddler On The Roof at the Auditorium Theater. Â (great show by the way)
I found the decor very nice and inviting, the chars were comfortable, enough space around tables and the lighting fit the mood. Â The only exception are the two TV's hanging at the bar. Â I found them to be an unwelcome distraction. Â
The wait staff was top notch. Â Our waiter new the menu inside and out, was very accommodating and not only to the adults, but to our children as well. Â He treated them as young adults which they always like. Â The other wait staff ensured our drinks where always topped off and when plates were done, they were quickly removed.
As for the food. Â My youngest got the Lobster bisque which did not take her long to spoon thru and get to the bottom of the cup. Â For the main course she had the lobster club sandwich which I tired and it was simply outstanding. Â The rest of us got Rib-Eye steaks and they were, really, really good. They came out as ordered and were of good size. Â As I was cutting my first piece, the knife was sliding right thru the meat indicating a tender cut meat, which was quickly confirmed as I grazed on this wonderful tasting bovine. Â My tastebuds were all excited and urged me on for more. Â For a side I had the garlic, mashed potatoes which were also very divine. Â The only caution I would give here is it appears all the potato portions are large and two people could easily share one. (assuming you ordered the larger cuts of beef).
As for having children in tow at this restaurant, there is not a special kids menu with cheaper prices. Â However, on the menu you'll find cheese burgers, an expensive hotdog, and mac & cheese. Â I brought my kids in here for it was a special evening for us, but I'm not so sure I'd bring them back in due to the limited kids selection and cost.
Granted, the menu is pricy, but I for one expect this in a steak house located in downtown Chicago. Â The good side is, the entire experience is pleasant and I'm sure that I will be back in there to dine again.
I have only been here once.
I went here with my family years ago before going to see Jersey Boys, which in my opinion was great. Â The filet I had was incredible! Â I like my steak medium-well and this steak was done just right and was very tender with out-of-this-world flavor! Â I never knew Rosebud could possibly have a steak as good as this. Â This is the Rosebud Prime Steakhouse though. Â Same owners as all the other Rosebud restaurants, but I'm guessing this one specializes in steaks. Â Good Guess?
This is number 2 on my list of the best steaks. Â Many people like Ruth's Chris, but I think the only thing that makes their steaks good is all the butter they use and the butter they put on top of the steak. Â That's not quality to me. Â The filet at Rosebud Prime, to use an old line, melted in my mouth. Â It reminded me of when you place a piece of solid milk chocolate on your tongue and it starts to melt into a liquid state.
I don't know if they still do it, but they used to escort people through the kitchen and out the back door after dinner for people going to the Bank of America Theatre.
I'm not sure why this place has so many haters, but I had a fabulous dinner here last night. Â Mainly, I picked this place because it is within walking distance from my hotel. Â I was seated at a table and, looking at the decor, it wouldn't surprise me if Frank Sinatra or Al Capone dined here. Â This place looks and feels old school. Â Â I ordered a couple of Hendrick's Gin Martinis and the waiter was kind enough to make sure they come with blue cheese stuffed olives. Â That was very much appreciated and is worth a star right there.
As far as my dinner is concerned, I ordered the bone-in Ribeye, medium rare, along with a side of Mac & Cheese and creamed spinach. Â The meat was perfectly prepared and plenty juicy. Â The mac & cheese was delicious. Â I only had a couple of bites of the creamed spinach and didn't come close to finishing either side dish. Â I probably ate about 3/4 of my steak. Â I didn't leave any food because it sucked, but simply because I could eat no more. Â Â In any case, it was a fabulous meal and I would highly recommend you check this place out. Â The crowd at the bar was happening too, so even if you dine by yourself, you won't feel alone.
I've been here for both lunch and dinner and have been very statisfied with both the food and service.
Although not always on the menu, you can get lobster mac and cheese if you ask for it - absolutely top notch. Â The steaks have all been very good (I've tried both their ny strip and ribeye) with a perfect char on the outside and cooked to spec on the inside.
I like this especially for business dinners/lunches - its a little pricey but for that you get 4 star service and food. Â The servers are very good about being nearby and available when you need them but not overly instrusive.
I am reviewing this place for the fish I had. Â I know I should never order fish anywhere I am not sure of and this was a mistake, an expensive mistake too. For $29, the lake perch dinner came barely luke warm, either steamed or pan fried so lightly I couldn't tell(no breading, even though the waiter said it would be breaded) grosse seasoning on it, and some strange sauce in a cup. the side I picked were the green beans amandine. which came barely steamed with no other dressings on them. Â
the oysters rockefeller were grosse too. they came floating on a big bed of salt and peppercorns. whats that all about? they were smothered in mushy spinach, cheese and bacon. you could barely detect an oyster.
for @$16 I would avoid this one big time. Â No comparison to anything in the gulf or east coast. better yet, never, ever order or pay for any seafood up in the chicago area! Â it is all frozen!
Gordan Ramsey would have a field day with their fish and seafood items,
"This is Sh!$!"
Excellent food and excellent service. Â I come here for lunch about once a month and I'm always satisfied with whatever I get. Â The steak sandwich, burger, seafood salad (Wednesdays), steak salad are all amazing. Â For sides, try the spicy potatoes - they are oily but very tasty.
The staff and Management provide consistent and professional service and are good to address any issues that may arise.
Update (5/3/11) - Today I tried the strip steak and it was absolutely phenomenal! Â The steak comes loaded with caramelized bermuda onions and full of flavor. Â It's become my new favorite thing on the menu and cannot wait to get it again. Â Pair it with a simple side salad w/ balsamic vinaigrette and you have yourself a nice balanced meal!
One of the best ribeyes I've ever eaten... it came with a large piece of roasted shank bone featuring a sprig of rosemary stuck into the marrow, and a dainty spoon.
The steak was wonderful, but if I could fly back to Chitown *just* to order a bunch of roasted shank bone and marrow, I would. Serious.
Also, no place else in the area is open that serves food late in the evening.
5 stars for the marrow! 4 overall.
Before catching a show at one of the nearby theaters, we wanted to grab dinner and Rosebud Prime was able to take us on short notice. Rosebud Prime is the "steakhouse" version of Rosebud the Italian eatery, so many of the pasta dishes that you like are on the menu along with steaks and chops.
The place was pretty busy for a Saturday night- mostly theater goers as the conversations at the tables around us started like ours, "We need to be on our way by 7:30". "No problem", said our server. And it wasn't.
We ordered a couple of appetizers, crab cake for me and chowder for my friend. They came up promptly.
As for entrees- I went with the ahi tuna steak, served rare with a light sear and my friend had the flank steak. A side of mac and cheese and some sauteed spinach and we were all set.
The food, while good, was not remarkable. My tuna steak was just okay- very thick but it had a odd consistency. And the mac and cheese was as ordinary as my mom's.
The decor is pretty nice. Red velvet banquettes, white covered tables and a focal point staircase that soars to the the second floor. Our table was definitely not an optimum one. We were on the pathway for the servers to the kitchen so I kept getting bumped which is a real pet peeve of mine. There is also a really nice outdoor patio although it was too warm to eat out there on the night we were there.
As for service, while our server was competent, he just seemed a bit condescending to us. Trust me- I've eaten in restaurants before and don't need to have everything explained to me.
There is valet parking that is a bit tricky as you pull into a driveway that runs along the south side of the restaurant where they take your car. If you are there only for dinner it's $12. But you can pay $20 and leave your car there until after the show. Just know that all cars have to be removed by 11pm.
Not my favorite steakhouse in the city, but certainly functional if you are looking for a place to eat in the theater district before your show.
Every time I come here for lunch, I swear to myself that I won't get their delicious and juicy burger. Â I am happy to report that I resisted the urge and ordered their prime tenderloin sandwich last minute on my latest trip. Â What a fantastic move that was!
Basically they grill two large steaks, slap them in between a bun with whole chunks of fresh mozzarella, Â grilled onions, tomato, and baby arugula. The portions were out of this world. I usually subscribe to the take no prisoners ideology of eating, but I must admit this ultimately ended in my defeat and a doggie bag needed to be had. Â And surprisingly, this sandwich tasted even better the second day reheated. Â
I am deducting one star for their choice of bread. I've never heard of  ciabatta bread before 2003, but my gripe is its ability to tear up the roof of your mouth like nothing else.  I don't know what culinary genius decided this was a good bread to use for sandwiches, because I swear it was crafted with malice and constructed out of razorblades. Â
OH, and do yourself a favor and order a pop. Â Comes served to you in fancy glass bottles.
My coworkers and I went here today to celebrate a birthday. We're very fortunate to have a generous boss who lets us expense birthday lunches. The birthday girl picked Rosebud and I was really glad because I had a feeling she would pick Italian Village and I loathe that place with the fiery passion of a thousand suns.
We were greeted warmly and shown to our table. They pack 'em in like sardines here, which is par for the course for a restaurant in the Loop.
The server came over and took our drink order. We ordered soft drinks and when they were brought out, they were the tiny glass bottles. Right away I knew this meant we would be charged for every refill because it wasn't fountain.
Next came bread and rolls. The pretzel rolls looked really good, so we all grabbed one. Unfortunately, biting into one was like biting into an ice cube. They were oddly really cold. Bread doesn't have to be piping hot, but room temperature shouldn't be too much to ask for.
The specials were announced and nothing sounded remotely appealing. I ended up ordering a steak salad. Since it was priced at a whopping $15.95, I was expecting a hearty, filling salad.
It was not. It was just sliced skirt steak thoughtlessly tossed over some salad greens with crumbled bleu cheese on top. The tomatoes in it were really sad looking. I know they're not in season right now, but they shouldn't be served if they're not at least vaguely red. These were barely orange. The salad also contained more beets and garbanzo beans on one plate than I've ever seen in my life. Perhaps if I was a fan of either of these, I would have been happy.
The manager stopped by our table at least 3 times to thank us for coming in and asking us if we were enjoying ourselves. I'm a little unnerved at overly solicitious service, but I suppose some may like the extra attention.
I don't think the food justifies the high prices and it's just not a place I'm all that I'm comfortable in.
I'm sure I'll be back as there's just not that many options in the Loop for business lunches but this place fails to impress.
It squeaks in at 2.5 stars.
I enjoyed my visit. I had great food, great conversation, and a dessert I'm still thinking about 2 days later.
The ladies I came with all decided to get something different and then we were going to split it in fours. It was a great idea in theory but once we saw our food we all dug in and quickly forgot about the deal. Â I did manage to get a forkful from a couple of the other plates but I was afraid of losing my hand if I tried for more. Everything was delicious. I had the tilapia stuffed with blue crab and cheese. We also had a crab cake, a salmon salad, and some other seafood salad.
We then had the orgasm worthy dessert. A gooey brownie topped with vanilla bean ice cream and mounds of whipped topping. The server also provided hot fudge, carmel and two kinds of nuts to complete the sundaes. If it would have been acceptable to lick the bowl clean I would have.
Our waiter was great and answered all of our questions and took our special orders without a hesitation. He had a little bit of a dry sense of humor but once you got past that he was great. I also enjoyed the bread server and the water guy.
I think I will go back next week and just order the dessert. It was that good! Really!
The burger may very well be the best in the city. Â Rosebud's been on my list since Phil Vittel rated their burger best a couple years back. Â The burger was excellent. Â The meat's taste carrying it with the cheddar, Pretzel Bun, and excellent toppings playing supporting roles. Â It was perfectly cooked and enormous. Â Dynamite.
The fries could have been better, but they were good.
The unassuming entrance here opens to a well-appointed dining room with tuxedoed waiters and jacketed bus boys serving rolls and sweet butter. Â It was pricey: about $20 after tip for each of us. Â But still, I'd go back for that burger.
Note - the 3 stars reflects my own dining preferences. Â If you are looking at this strictly as a place to take clients, more like a 4 star for the *bling* factor.
I took a client to lunch here today and wasn't overly impressed. Â Both my client and myself thought that while the space was attractive (very spacious and open) the actual seating was very uncomfortable. Â My guest is well over 6 feet tall, and I'm not quite 5 feet tall, so maybe it had something to do with our extremes, but both of us felt physically uncomfortable in the chairs - not an auspicious start to an expensive lunch.
Our server took our order for first courses right away - we had the corn chowder and the daily soup, potato leek. Â Both soups were quite good, but the bread basket that accompanied the soup was stale. Â As we had an early lunch reservation, I was a bit surprised.
The menu was interesting (Kobe beef hot dog?!) but note - everything is ala carte.  See menu here: <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rosebudrestaurants.com%2Frest10.php%3Fs%3Dmenu&s=f5c87445e6df94e63b8ec34925cae349c9b0cb28cffdd2e73df2689ef9daf631" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.rosebudrestau…</a>
When my guest asked if any of the tuna on the menu could be cooked through (he isn't a huge fan of fish, but wanted to give it a run) the waiter said no - nicely - without asking the kitchen. Â When my guest then asked for a fish that wasn't fishy, the sever kept trying to steer him to the Nicoise salad and the scallops, when there was Whitefish - the mildest fish of all time - featured on the menu. Â Eventually, my guest ordered the Whitefish broiled and I had the special of the day, a chilled platter with shrimp, seared tuna and crab.
The food came quickly, and looked lovely, the whitefish was perfectly prepared and was a nice sized fillet. Â My guest enjoyed his whitefish, but wasn't terribly impressed. Â My plate was a bit of a disappointment - 4 very, very thin slices of seared tuna, 1 jumbo shrimp cut in half, and a very small piece of crab meat on top of a rather aggressive chilled fennel salad. Â There were a couple of sauces (a balsamic and a green sauce of some kind) on my plate, but they were served in such teeny, tiny artistic dots, you couldn't actually taste them. Nothing on my plate seemed especially fresh, especially the tuna which was actually a bit fishy instead of clean. Â I would not order this again.
We declined desert, but I had coffee. Â I was not offered a refill. Â Busboys were good about refilling glasses (bottle of Pellegrino), our waiter was very earnest and friendly, but overall, not what I would expect from a $60.00 lunch. Â I'll be back if I have a client I need to take to a fancy-schmancy place in the loop, but wouldn't bother on my own dime.
Four stars is hard to do for a newbie. Â I had to take away one star because the service is still working out some kinks (support service not necessarily waiters themselves - our waiter was pretty on top of it).
Dined with five others on an afternoon in the loop. Â We gave them leeway with the wines by the glass which were stellar (pinot was particularly good) and the steaks were unbelievably seasoned. It was the best filet I've had in about a year. Â The ribeyes and delmonicos at the table got rave reviews as well. Â I've grown accustomed to less than flavorful filets here in Chicago - but even the FILET was delicious and arrived in a tangy and sweetly seasoned au jus. Â One drawback - kitchen is still shy and four of the six steaks were undercooked at medium and medium plus. Â Order medium well if you don't want it really red. Â The waiter however, was apologetic and we got more fire on all our steaks without sacrificing the flavor. Â We even received a free round of dessert for the mistake - I like a restaurant who recognizes and deals with the opening kinks graciously.
It appears they have a separate rentable space upstairs for large parties. Â The jalepeno hash browns are a MUST HAVE (this from someone who doesn't particularly like jalepenos OR hash browns).
Would definitely recommend for a martini lunch or pre-theater.
Update: Â The lunch hour means crammed-in tables now, Gibson's style rid-damn-diculous, so your eating shoulder to shoulder with the stranger at the next table. Â If you go for lunch - make it a late lunch. Â By 1pm they start to remove some tables to create more room.
