By far the BEST Red Beans and Rice HANDS DOWN!! My boyfrend and I went the first time and ordered the jerk chicken with red beans and rice, plantains, and cabbage and I must say that my boyfriend is a chef so he is EXTREMELY critical on food at restuarants and he LOVED every bite.
Next trip we shared an order of jerk oxtails with the red beans and rice, cabbage, and plaintains ANOTHER winner. This food is simply delicious! I always thought Uncle Joe's was the go to place for jamaican, but I have def learned otherwise and the fact that I can get great jamaican food around the corner from my apt is why they def deserve 5 stars! :)
Will try the jerk tilapia on my next visit.
Um, I don't know what place the other reviewers went too because this food was Nasty with a capital N!!!
The jerk chicken wings were the only thing that had any saving grace to this place but the sides were just horrible!
My daughter likes this place that's why I went but since she isn't a person that truly cooks or eats real food I should have known I would not like this place!!!
This is another place I wouldn't go to if it was free!
Finally a restaurant in Chicago where the taste and heat level of ALL the food on my plate meets my expectations.
The owner/chef is Paulette who is a sweetheart and will take good care of you. There's a single table which is more for waiting than eating. They do accept credit cards. Dinners consisting of meat, beans & rice plus two sides typically run under $10 bucks while the seafood dishes are a little more. The portions are very generous. Metra trains run down the middle of 71st Street so pay heed to the "Yield" signs which are all over the place here.
Of course the jerk chicken is the dish to get. I have a weakness for curry, so I got some of that to go also. The dinners are served on a generous bed of rice and beans and come with two sides. For one side I got steamed cabbage. Paulette works her magic even on the lowly cabbage which is seasoned to culinary nirvana.
Oxtails. Curried goat. Talk about authentic! They even had escoviched fish on the menu which is akin to a ceviche. And then there's callaloo which is like spinach and I've had it only in Jamaica.
Jared S. was the First to Review this place and he uses the word "spectacular" to describe it. Totally agree.
So after eating food from here I have this urge to go out and have my hair braided...
