There is no lack of great steakhouses in the city of Louisville, and choosing which one you want to visit often depends on what you want out of the ambience. Â The location of Ruth's Chris will make you feel on top of the world. Â
Located at the roof of the Kaden Tower office building, the view is nothing spectacular until nighttime, when the lights of the city twinkle below you and the dome of the tallest building downtown beams back at you like a lighthouse's beacon. Â
Service is par excellence here, with the waitstaff being attentive and coordinating service in a way that is equal parts art and science. Â And you cannot beat these steaks. Â Watch the plates because they are HOT, and the hunk of top quality beef sizzling before you wafts the scent of butter and great steak. Â Add a dollop of creamed spinach and some mashed potatoes, and you have one excellent dinner. Â
Romantic without being kitschy, sophisticated and still cozy, Ruth's Chris is one place not to pass up if you have the opportunity to go here!
I have been to many Ruth's Chris across the country and love the food they offer. Â I love the location in Louisville because it is on the top floor of a 17 story building offering a great panoramic view of Louisville. Â The service is top notch and the food is of high quality as always. Â Great fine dining experience!
Review Source:If you're looking for an inexpensive menu, this is not the place for you but if you enjoy top of the line service, high quality, melt in your mouth steak, delicious side dishes and fine wine, this is the place for you. We make this our special occasion and celebration place and have enjoyed consistent quality service and food for 5 years. We would dine here once a week if we had the funds for such indulences. Excellent!
Review Source:We had a wonderful holiday experience here as my brother-in-law was feeling the Christmas Spirit and sprang for dinner. Â We did not valet as I am always skeptical about someone driving my car (think "Ferris Bueller") but the lot is very close so it is really not a problem other than the strange concrete layout in this 70's era parking lot-they need to rework the traffic pattern here. Â Somebody is going to end up with their car in a fountain. Â The elevator is a treat, but it must be 40 years old and somewhat reminded me of the Concorde blowing up on a runway. Â Cool in its day, but a little sketchy. Â Anyway, the bar area is very warm, with wood paneling and a coziness that is reminiscent of cigar bar or some male dominated business club. Â It looked like a great place to drink and hang out-not big, but I like being able to talk without shouting. Â $13 drinks should be served with charm. Â Oh, its not cheap, but Ruths is not a cheap deal, it is in fact, an exercise in balancing a spend that is more than you would like but not as much as THEY would like. Â So, given that my in-law was buying, we were discreet, and ordered a fantastic item called the Ruths' Classic. Â It was a nice selection of steaks, shrimp, chicken or scallops paired with a side (and the sides are huge, great for sharing) a salad or soup, and a dessert, all for $40. Â Started with a salad with bleu cheese (standard spring mix and add very rich and chunky bleu cheese). Â Nice. Â Next came the filet, smallish, and served with 3 medium sized grilled shrimp. Â The filet was a melt-in-your mouth delight, nicely seasoned and very tender. Â Shrimp were standard off-the barbie, but a nice balance. Â We split the mashed potatoes and cream spinach-nothing amazing but good portions and tasty. Â The dessert was fantastic, a mini chocolate cheesecake in a bath of sugar cream with raspberries and blueberries on the side. Â Amazing.
Drinking water, (the tap water in Louisville is very good) the bill came to the original $40, and was well worth it. Â You can definitely accessorize or drink to your hearts delight, but if you want a really nice meal in a great atmosphere, stick to the Ruths Classic and you really have a good value.
If you have $200 dollar to blow, Ruth's Chris is the perfect place for the $$.  The Mr. and I have been here a few times and we were satisfied every time.  Now I'm also a fan of the $15 steak at Texas Roadhouse.  But I don't exactly get a great wine pairing, impeccably professional service, white table linens and sinfully perfect desserts at the Roadhouse.  It is just not the same experience.  The husband enjoys his filet mignon like always; I've tried the bison ribeye and regular ribeye.  The sizzling butter just makes it that much more Lipitor-worthy!  And the desserts!  I've said I'm not a big fan of sweets, but their bread pudding is one exception!  And the creme brûlée...can't resist that one, either.
Review Source:Ruth's Chris is on the top floor of this office building that looks like it has concrete lace all around it. It's fabulous. You can take a glass elevator up to your table and you can also walk around on the outdoor balcony, which provides a fabulous view - especially around sunset.
The staff is extremely professional and tends to your every need/wish/want/hope/dream/you get the picture. They're good.
The food is obviously amazing - how can you go wrong with a fabulously cooked medium rate petit filet? I'll tell you how: if you touch the plate that's literally 500 degrees. Then you'll be sorry. But don't worry - they warn you about the extremely hot plates a foot from your face numerous times before you can even forget that it's way too hot to touch. Now that's what I call service.
Their creme brulee was amazing as well. My only qualm about this place was that it's so far away from downtown Louisville. Other than that, I'm a fan.
I've got to admit, I don't consider myself a "fine-diner". Â I'm typically just as happy with a pizza or taco than with a steak. Â However, the person I was dating at the time made reservations for us to go here for dinner one night, on a special occasion.
I was already stressed before ever having left home, because I didn't feel like I was "dressed up" enough for this place. Â Also, there was a bit of confusion about parking when we arrived. Â There seemed to be an offering of valet parking, but no one available, so we parked ourselves in the only lot open (the valet lot) and headed inside.
I recognized pretty early on that perhaps I needn't have been so worried about what I was wearing (a collared shirt sans tie with dress pants), as there were several people wearing sweats, jeans, and baseball caps.
The atmosphere was okay, although perhaps a little pretentious (Did they really just change the tablecloth to a black one because they didn't want white lint to get on my partner's black pants... and what do they change it to if you're wearing sweats, I wonder?). Â We didn't have a window table, which I would have preferred for the view I'd heard so much about, but I assume that this is something that could have been corrected with a request when making a reservation.
I have no complaints about the food. Â I ate it, and I enjoyed it - but I saw nothing particularly special about it, and certainly wouldn't have enjoyed it nearly as much if I had been the one footing the bill.
Maybe I'm just too simple a guy to be haunting such fancy-pants establishments.
This was my first experience at a Ruth's Chris. Â Overall, I was pleased. Â When I heard the sides were ordered ala carte and the server asked if we were going to share I didn't realize it was like eating Chinese restaurant style. Â So I thought, "Why do you think I'm going to be willing to share my mashed potatoes and creamed spinach?!" Â Then when it came I was a bit more willing :)
My favorite item was my appetizer. Â Scallops! Â Oh...they were plump and worth it!
Other half ordered salad. Â It looked good but was I glad I didn't order it because I almost didn't make it through my dinner. Â I ordered the smallest cut of Filet Mignon. Â
The bread was a bit of a disappointment. Â I really don't like bread that's crunchy on the outside. Â So crumbs went flying when I'd bite in and I found myself only going for two pieces at the most. Â If they had some moist pumpernickel I would've tore it up!
The next best items were the desserts.
The banana cream pie was awesome! Â We took the cheesecake home as our 2nd dessert. Â Just finished the last bite of it last night and it was just as rich and delicious as the first night we tried it.
It was my bday and yes I'd say I was worth it but  I would've rather have gone for a romantic dinner than bday.  Nonetheless, it was nice :)
I guess I don't get it or something. Â I mean, I like steak. Â I like steak a lot. Â But I'm not sure how their steak gets to cost several times that of more mid-range restaurants and taste the same or worse. Â Just because you give someone a ridiculously large or thick cut of meat does not make it tasty, guys. Â They serve a lot of food. Â But it's really just meh. Â And then when you see the bill you feel like you should have gotten a massage by your steak before you ate it. Â I would happily pay $100 for a perfect steak, but I'm not gonna pay that for wishful thinking and a very nice building.
The Kaden building is a very cool Frank Lloyd Wright creation, but you can see it without buying an over-priced mediocre steak. Â There are much better steak places in Louisville.
MR says ... so good i could take my clothes off
MRS says ... dinner at Ruth Chris was arranged by MR who wanted to celebrate my birthday at a fancy steakhouse. we were debating whether to go downtown at Mortons or Jeff Ruby's. we decided to try Ruth Chris since it's closer to home.
Service
- complimentary valet parking
- soon as you step out of the elevator, courteous and friendly staff at your disposal. they'll help you with your bulky coats and seat you instantly
- knowledgeable server who knows great wine pairings
- great team work of servers (refilling drinks)
Food & Drinks
Mojito - not that good. maybe a martini would have been better
Wine - merlot and shiraz
Veal osso bucco - to die for! if not sharing, can be a meal in itself
Lobster bisque - creamy, heavy textured soup
Maine Lobster - a little overcooked. texture rubbery. (i should have just ordered another veal osso bucco or a steak)
Ribeye Steak - presentation not impressive but boy! oh boy! meat is to die for ... you will not be disappointed ~ awesome steak!!!
Sweet Potato Casserole - one side enough to share
Cheesecake - complimentary dessert if celebrating a birthday
maybe the best restaurant in louisville. great view. great food. perhaps the greatest filet i've ever had. very juicy and tender. melts in your mouth. great view of all of louisville here. well worth the $. great service. very good sweet potatoes.
good for big groups. has an outdoor bar seating area. some of the best creme brulee too.
Very nice location, at the top of a tower with a gorgeous view and outside terrace all the way around to walk out onto. The restaurant easily seated our large party of 7 and provided very good service, even when we stayed long past closing time. The server was well versed in wines and provided free desserts... probably due to the large bill we already racked up. All in all, a very nice experience for a Ruth's Chris, not necessarily what I'd consider a 5 star experience though.
Review Source:Okay, I had very high expectations heading in to Ruths Chris. Â Were they met? Â For the most part. Â I have to say, I love their steaks! Â It is a little pricy and it's a place that you can't go to twice a week(at least I can't) but on a special occasion, I love this place. Â Great atmosphere on top of the Kaden Tower and great service. Â One thing that surprised me was the sweet potato casserole. Â It is the best side dish that I have ever had! Â It is incredible. Â It is almost a dessert. Â Even if you don't like sweet potatoes, give it a try!! I have only had one sub par experience and the manager took great care of me.
