I don't brunch often, but when I do, I brunch at Ruth's.
--Because at Ruth's I get really good coffee in big cups. And they bring a cup to you if you have to wait (which is often, because this place is SO good -- ALSO, they are expanding into the spot next to them, so 3 cheers that we won't have to wait as long in the near future!)
--Lefse that can't be found anywhere else that I know.
--The best darn scrambles and eggs Benedict I've ever seen. Most recently, I enjoyed a scramble with spinach, pesto, goat cheese and mushrooms and my hubs enjoyed the crab cake Benedict. To quote him, "This is the best, most crabby crab cake I've ever had. Â It's almost all crab!'
--Funky decor, on point servers, and a gracious owner.
Ruth's is great for breakfast, brunch or lunch...I've not found anything on the menu I don't enjoy.
Love this little spot in Keystone. Wish I would have known about it sooner. It has more of a B-Rip vibe to it. Decided to have brunch there today.
Started with the cheese and fruit platter. Nothing amazing about it. I would say they may have purchased the cheeses from the local grocery. It consisted of crumbled blue cheese, crumbled goat cheese, shredded cheddar, slices of Swiss and brie. Catch my drift? It was also served with fresh fruit and slices of toast. if you are going to do a cheese plate do it right and serve wedges. It's easier to eat. But on a good note since they served all this over a bed of spring mix I took the rest home and plan on having it as a salad later.
I ordered the eggs benedict over crab cakes. First time for me yet good. I did try the tomato basil soup which is made in house. That was also tasty. I also tried the gourmet grilled cheese. OUTSTANDING! No I didn't order all this I shared with my mom. We do that a lot.
I will definitely return to try the lefse that everyone is talking about. Never had and now I'm mad I didn't get one.
I was in the area recently and craving some comfort/breakfast food. Le Peep and First Watch are near Ruth's, but both are chains...
Ruth's was hoppin'. I didn't have to wait for a table but others after me certainly did. Luckily this restaurant is expanding soon, which should help alleviate the wait.
The server was personable and helpful. The entire menu sounded great to me -- salads with goat cheese, sandwiches featuring applewood bacon and safron aioli, eggs benedict (salmon and crab cake options!), homemade biscuits and gravy, daily quiches, yummy soups, omelets and scrambles, sides of fresh fruit...
I decided on the 9 dollar egg scramble special -- tomato, asparagus, freshly shaved Parmesan cheese. It came with my choice of bread -- sourdough! Then a side salad or cup of fruit -- I chose the former. Everything tasted fresh and healthy, and I made note to come back and order a Lefse (Norwegian crepe).
Coffee was good, too. Support local business! It's delicious.
Great place for breakfast and brunch. I stayed at a hotel close by and this place was my favorite in the area. They have great service and the food here is damn good. The chicken sandwiches are so damn good. I also tried there sausage, egg and toast for breakfast.
And they are expanding their space in the new year, so its going to be a much bigger place.
They are only open until 3pm. Wish they were opened for dinner though.
Go here and get the cheesecake pancakes. They are the best pancakes I have ever had, and I really like pancakes and breakfast food in general. I also like the faux banana split. There is a banana sliced like in a banana split, but there is yogurt, fruit, and granola instead of all the unhealthy stuff. It usually satisfies my craving for a dessert.
The service is pretty good, and the restaurant is just really cute. If you are looking for a nice breakfast place, you found it. But, seriously, get the cheesecake pancakes. Unless you dislike cheesecake for some insane reason, you will not regret eating them.
Fresh food and homey atmosphere. Stopped here as we passed thru Indy on a trip. I had a delish omelet with a generous salad and yummy toast. Even the coffee was great. Hubby had a caprese sandwich and totally enjoyed that. Personable service, great decor. Wish I lived closer so I could make this a regular hangout! Yes, a bit pricey for everyday, but the food is great fresh quality and worth it.
Review Source:What a super cute place! I can admit, i's a little pricey for lunch, but you definitly don't go away hungry. It reminds me of, if Cafe Patachou and Creation Cafe had a baby, that is exactly what Ruth's Cafe would be. It's artsy fartsy, cozy, warm, and comfy on the inside, just a little place, but feels so homey. I had the missile sandwich and my husband had the gourmet grilled cheese with the poblano cheese soup. Everything was very very good, filled with flavor, and served hot. We can't wait to come back for brekafast! What I also like is that you can tell that it has a bit of international influence to the menu as well. They also source everything locally so it all tastes incredibly fresh. Nice staff as well. I would recommend doing a lunch combo half sandwich with soup or when you go, have both of you order a sandwich of different kinds and then switch halfs. There are so many good things to try that you will probably have a hard time making a decision. I've passed by here a million times. Wish I would have stopped in a long time ago!
Review Source:I only wish our stay was a lot long. The food and service fantastic. Â we had breakfast on 7/7/12 . Â i needed a good cup of coffee I think I Drank 4 cups that's how good the coffee is. Â Pancakes :) Â my Husband had the best biscuits and gravy with homemade sausage. Â so surprise we came back on 7/8/12 . Â You made a vacation something else to talk about and I will tell anyone who is in Indianapolis to eat breakfast at the best place in town.
Review Source:Needless to say, this restaurant revived our hope for Indy Cuisine. We were hesitant to go considering it was in a strip mall, and considering our previous dining experiences during our first-ever stay in Indy, but went because it was on the way to our kayak trip on the White River. Didn't disappoint! The atmosphere was to die for, it was SO cute. Every inch of the walls were covered in little pictures of furniture or a mural of a town square, or fun little life sayings. It was so so cute. The food was, once again, overpriced, but I managed to squeeze by with a coffee, bacon, and a lefse. The lefse (was that it?) was seriously good and seriously cheap, so I highly recommend, and the service was pleasant but a bit slow. All in all we enjoyed our brunch experience at Ruth's. If you're an out-of-towner, make sure you swing by.
Review Source:Ruth's is our go-to breakfast spot.
Kind, casual, and attentive staff delivering fantastic food. Â Many of the staff know you by name and honestly care about your experience.
The food is hands down spectacular. Â I recommend the lefse to start and an omelette to devour. Â Can't go wrong with any of their loose tea selections
I love this little gem!
Honest disclosure: This wasn't our first choice for breakfast. But, due to being stahving and not wanting to wait, we jumped at the chance for a table at Ruth's. The tables are so close together that I overhead some deliciously awesome conversations. Love that! The proximity also made it somewhat natural for the solo man at the next table to occasionally make conversation with us.
I am not a huge breakfast/brunch fan, mainly because eggs gross me out. The smell, the texture ... just blech. But, I was happy to see that potato pancakes were on the menu. With leeks! And REAL sour cream! Not low-fat! Not fat-free! REAL sour cream!
The atmosphere is charming and the service was attentive. Prices were decent -- for my potato pancakes, a tall stack of cheesecake pancakes and two cups of coffee, the tab was $23 before tip. Living downtown, I don't know that I would make a special trip up to 86th St for breakfast but the next time we are running weekend errands, sure thing.
Tusen takk - thank you very much in Norwegian. Â I hope that's right, because that's how I feel about Ruth's Pull Up a Chair Cafe. Â
My wife and I visited them yesterday on a very rare breakfast date without the kids and had an outstanding meal. Â
I had the lefse, a delicious crepe-like dish that was like nothing I've ever tasted before. Â It has a nice combo of sweet and savory that one doesn't get with a typical breakfast. Â I also ordered a potato pancake with a delicious blend of zucchini and squash with a nice dollop of sauce. Â
My wife ordered the blueberry pancakes (which she allowed me to try) which were some of the best I've tasted. Â
I LOVE breakfast fare. Â It's comfort food and while it would appear fairly simple (throw some batter on the skillet) a place like Ruth's shows what can be done with creativity and an expert's touch. Â
The service was friendly (we were offered coffee while we were waiting in line) and everyone seemed to be in a good mood. Â
I would recommend Ruth's - delicious food, wonderful service and such a fun place to enjoy a meal!
We had lunch there for the first time last week. What a disappointment.
Service was poor and slow. I had the chicken salad sandwich. The
chicken was so tough I couldn't chew it. My husbands bacon sandwich
was awful. Too bad, but a little good service could have gone along way.
I don't think Patachou has anything to worry about.
Showing up at Ruth's Keystone with a RAGING hangover, I was not in the mood for Eggs Benedict or the highly suggested Salmon and cream cheese omelet. I needed real sustenance, soak up all the poison and take a nap kind of sustenance.
So I opted for some sausage, scrambled eggs, and biscuits and gravy. Easy food that help would along my recovery. How wrong I was. The eggs were still a bit slimy, the sausage tough and overcooked. The gravy was thin and lacked pepper and meat. The biscuits were good, the only real saving grace for the whole meal.
Then the bill arrived.... I knew I was ordering ala carte, but please $16 for 2 eggs, 2 biscuit, 2 sausage, gravy and a coffee. Id rather find a Dennys, eat a Moons over my Hammy and save a few bucks.
Went after the wait at Patachou was unrealistically long. Hadn't been here before but was really hoping for a hidden local gem. Maybe not off the wall fantastic, but just something to go to time to time.
Not so. My husbands French toast was...ok, but some spots were definitely not cooked through. My eggs Benedict didn't seem to be completely done, yet the ham was way too tough. Sauce tasted too...tangy? Tart? Not right?
My husband originally was going to order their special of the day: salmon Benedict. When he ordered, he was informed they were out of salmon, and not just from a rush of the special, but that they had been out for several weeks now and didn't know if/when they'd get it back in. Seriously???
It's real. "Lefse to go." For... get this... two dollars. Two huge pieces of lefse packaged and wrapped to go. Are you kidding me... $2? Considering this is the only place in Indiana to get lefse (potato based crepe amazingness)... this is a steal.
I gotta say I was tempted to just pull up to the counter, and stick around for a cup of coffee. Oh, the hustle and bustle...
I'll be back, indeed!
In his famed book "Kitchen Confidential," Anthony Bourdain warned me not to eat Eggs Benedict or risk the chance of being exposed to salmonella. Â Although I agree his advice is solid, I love Hollandaise sauce especially when it's drizzled over poached eggs, bread and meat. Â
Ruth's Keystone Cafe has the best Eggs Benedict in town. Â They offer several varieties (traditional, spinach, asparagus, crab...). Â They only serve benedicts on Saturday and Sunday, but their weekday menus for breakfast and lunch are lovely too. Â
The joint is pretty small with only a handful of tables and a few seats at the counter. Â It gets full on the weekends after 10:00 or so.
UPDATED - OPEN AGAIN AS OF OCT. 2009 (SO THEY TELL ME)
This is by far one of our most favorite breakfast restaurants in Indy. Â The service is friendly, the food is outstanding and the counter seats are the best for all the action.
Try the eggs benedict, white chocolate raspberry scone (with curd and cream), scrambles, quiche, salads.....need I say more?
There are a few things that can happen in a dining facility that can get on my last nerve and grind on it for my entire dining experience. One of these things is when I can see in plain sight the service staff messing around and not really doing anything productive. Now, I'm not so jaded as to believe that this doesn't go on, but keep it somewhere I can't see it. Why do I mention this? Because today at Ruth's my server, the other server and the kitchen guys were all chilling out in the dining room, having lunch and reading magazines. So Ruth's got a few bad marks from me on a number of levels.
For one, my iced tea was a little undiluted and tasted like dirt, which is a cardinal sin to me. Next my salad was $8.50 and looked like a side salad. Another thing was the menu tells the tale of Ruth and her dedication to hospitality and good times, but neither was really to be found. Not to mention that the menu talks about the importance of the Lefse (a sort of Norwegian dessert) that is important to the story of Ruth and her family and her culture, and they were out. Now, in my humble opinion, if you are going to talk a lot about certain aspects of your restaurant, you should nail them...every time. That means, never running out of signature items and not neglecting your core values.
Ok so maybe I'm being a little harsh, Ruth's is a little hole in the wall sort of place that most people probably don't know exists. I ordered the Cobb salad, and suffice to say; at least the lettuce was crisp. Other than that they seemed to have found a plethora of taste free ingredients, including the most mild and flavorless bleu cheese I have ever tasted. The saving grace came with my dessert, despite the disappointment of there being no Lefse. They have some pretty amazing brownies. A slight hint of German chocolate and a quite ample serving that left me feeling pretty full since the salad really didn't do the trick.
I get the feeling that Ruth's real specialty is breakfast, so I'll go check that out soon and report back, but as for lunch...I'm out.
If you're looking for a breakfast or lunch that's a little different than what you're used to, Ruth's is the place to try. Â Unique egg scrambles and quiches are a welcomed change from the hot cakes and mega-omelets most breakfast places "specialize" in. Â Everything is made fresh and it's obvious. Â If trying something new isn't your thing, you can still get the traditional egg, bacon and toast meal or a stack of pancakes. Â Oh, and the coffee is top-notch.
For lunch, Ruth's excels at sandwiches. Â The smoked salmon and spinach melt are both excellent.
The atmosphere is pleasant and conducive to conversation - not overly loud or distracting. Â I don't recommend coming with a party of more than four, however. Â The dinning area is small and crowds easily.
Prices are a little high compared to your standard breakfast and lunch but not bad considering the unique choices. Â Still, it's not a place I can afford to go to often.
Recommended: Breakfast - egg scramble with asparagus, red pepper and ham; Lunch - Smoked Salmon sandwich
