I couldn't ask for a better neighborhood bar than Shany's. The service is good, the staff is very friendly and the food is killer. They smoke their own meats (pastrami, corned beef, brisket) and you'll find chunks of it in the ranch beans... yum! But for me it all comes down to the fish tacos, I can't get enough of them. Oh, and did I mention happy hour goes until 8pm every day? Yes, EVERY DAY!

There's also the little event known as "Free Bacon Night" every first Wednesday. It's amazing! The flavors they come up with are inventive and delicious... ranch, buffalo blue cheese, vegetable, spaghetti, General Tso's, hot buttered rum, beef, smores, chocolate and peanut butter, balsamic and feta cheese, sweet and sour... and on, and on.

If you are in the area you have to stop in!

Nothing to write home about. Went to lunch with a friend who recommended the chicken dumpling soup... meh...bland and almost devoid of seasoning but what do you expect with Irish fare. Ate nothing else that evening because I wasn't feeling too hot. Threw up all night... lasted almost 4 days, couldn't shake it.... could only assume the luck of the Irish wasn't with me or my gutty-works that day. Hope your experience is better than my own was for your sake.

I love their HH fish tacos!!! Best fish tacos I have found on this side of Vancouver!

We went to this little bar a few weeks ago and keep coming back to get some of the best pub grub in the Couv. Great happy hour, the place gets busy but the service doesn't suffer because of it. We get the pork sliders (3) at happy hour, Mac and cheese,  or fish tacos and the "shanny" fries. Huge selection of beer, good mixed drinks. try it and see if the place doesn't remind you a bit of something out of Irish pub scenes.

Food is amazing!! Drinks are so good!! One of the better bars in Vancouver!! Great place & atmosphere.  With amazing staff!! Your money will go a long way!! Everything is priced great for the quality you are getting!! It's always such fun time I go. Lines can be sort of long when they get really busy & sometimes it's hard to find a table if you have more than 4 people in your group.

By far the best bar in the 'Couve! Great, homemade food, generous pours and really cheap happy hour prices in food.

Shanny's is the best bar you could hope for in Vancouver. Rowdy when you want it, chill most days out of the week. Real good happy hour (the pulled pork anything is particularly steller) and bartenders that actually remember your name.

Solid outdoor smoking area-- with giant umbrellas, because, you know, I hear it rains sometimes in the Northwest-- and ashtrays as far as the eye can see.

The staff? They take care of you, so take care of them.

Oh, and the wings? To die for.

This place is also quite spacious and their shanahan's fries are soo filling!!

Drinks are reasonably priced and on certain days even cheaper!

And they offer a free birthday drink!

Actually come to think of it, I'm always the DD when I go there so I'm not sure what their girly drinks cost. I did however buy a drink for the birthday girl and I want to say normal/average price (something like $7-$8 for an amf).

Service is also spotty. Some days good, other days have grumpy bartenders.

Great local bar, and by local I mean if you sit there long enough, you will see everyone you went to high school with (I graduated from HB in the mid '90s).  The food is stellar, in quality, quantity, & selection. They have a couple pool tables, a juke box, Duck Hunter, live bands, and an open air patio.

I like busy places, when you can still get a table and enjoy yourself.  Shanahan's offers that. I have never had to stand around like a fool waiting for a place to sit.  The crowd is diverse, the beer selection is decent and the place is friendly.  What more could you ask for?

This place provides one with all the basic necessities that makes a good bar.  I live two hours away, but when I am in town, which I am frequently, I don't hesitate to come back.

    This isn't Applebees folks.

One of a handful of "funky" establishments Vancouver has to offer   ...unlike the typical "cookie cutter", chain, plain, boring places Vancouver seems to be riddled with.

I enjoy the eclectic feel and decor of this place ~

The food is CONSISTENTLY good (steak bites, ceasar salad and fish taco's are my fav, but they are well known for their bbq'd items).  Shanny Fries are delish but should be shared with 2 or more people unless you are planning to join Jenny Craig.

Drinks are reasonably priced in comparison to other pubs/bars/taverns in town.

I like this place because of it's fun, relaxed atmosphere.

The ONLY reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because the service seems to be hit and miss...sometimes they are awesome and on the ball with checking on you.   However, on a few occassions I've had to flag down my waitress to order another drink/food ask for my bill,   Oddly, there doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason for this because this has happened both when the place isn't packed and other times when every table is full.     I don't understand that, but I keep going back for the great food, cool vibe and good prices.

I would argue that what separates a good dive bar from the rest of the pack is the quality of the food. I mean, booze is booze, right? Sure, it takes a skilled hand to mix a good drink, but pouring beer from a tap is hardly an art. With that said, Shanahan's can stake the claim of being one of - if not THE - best bars in Vancouver.

The drinks are good, of course. And Happy Hour runs from 3-8 PM...nice for those rushing to beat the typical 6 PM cutoff. But the food...that is what sets Shanny's apart. Let's start with the free popcorn, which beats even the best movie theater popcorn around. It is perfectly buttery and salty, no doubt meant to stimulate your thirst, but who cares? It's that good! My litmus test for bar food is fried pickles. First, they're not easy to find around the Pacific Northwest. Second, when you do stumble across them, they are usually served sliced and often over-fried. Shanahan's takes a different approach. They fry the whole pickle spear, and do so to perfection - the batter is crisp and light, with a nice ratio of breading to pickle, and a perfect balance of tartness and saltiness. You could fill up on popcorn and fried pickles alone, but there is so much more to the menu, you'd be missing out if you stopped there! The Shanny Fries are sinful and decadent, and probably pack enough fat and calories to fill an elephant for a week - but they're so damn good! You get french fries AND tater tots AND bacon AND cheese AND green onions. Then there are the steak bites, tender and smoky with mushrooms and a creamy horseradish dipping sauce.

If you can get past the appetizers - good luck with that, by the way - try one of their killer burgers (there are a dozen to choose from) or sandwiches piled high with meat cooked in their onsite smoker. Their chili is also particularly good, thick and chunky and smoky.

Breakfast is also served, as well as brunch on the weekends. We stopped by on a recent Sunday and were blown away by the corned beef hash, a generous portion of smoky, salty, shredded corn beef over cubed potatoes and topped with poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. Best of all? The bloody mary bar, which features no fewer than ten varieties of hot sauce along with plenty of fixings including olives, peperoncini, cocktail onions, pickled green beans and asparagus spears, garlic, and even bacon. You have a choice of tomato juice or a bottled bloody mary mix, but be warned: the bartender pours vodka with a heavy hand, and the bloody marys are addictive!

As far as atmosphere goes, this is a typical bar. At first seating looks limited, but there is a second room in the back with additional tables, television screens, and billiards. It's about as noisy as you'd expect, but you'll probably be distracted by the great food and drinks anyway. Service is efficient and friendly. The parking lot is small and fills up fast, but on-street parking is readily available.

Thursday Night, $2.75 Microbrews.  How can you beat that?  Staff is super friendly.

The go to place when your looking for a chill hangout.

For a dive bar, Shanahan's is one of the best I've been in.  For beer, they have a wide variety of microbrews and the ordinary crappy beers too. I like the angry orchards cider and the raspberry wheat on tap.  For white wine, the Clos du Bois Chardonnay was drinkable--nothing special, but not horrible either for $6 a glass.
The service was spotty, but for a busy Saturday night, that is understandable.
As for food, AMAZING for a dive bar. Definitely get the Shany fries--I ordered the half size and that was plenty: fries, tots, green onions, cheddar, and bacon and very greasy.  My date ordered the death by bacon burger (or something like that) and loved it.  Next time, I'll be trying the wings.

Shanahan's is a great bar to have around.
Whenever I am not in the mood for a dive bar or want cheap wine that does not come from a box Shannys is def my favorite option.
It is large, has a patio, pool table and an open mic some days.
The drinks are good, lots of beer on tap and the food is pretty damn good bar food.
The shanny fries are a feat to eat and process. I would recommend taking them home and mixing with your eggs for breakfast, just dont eat anything more that day!
The service has never been very friendly or good in the several times I have been there, but I guess that would be too much to ask for.

The food menu at Shanahans is way better than you'd expect for the basic local tavern. They have a wide variety of foods available, and everything I've tied has been well made and fairly priced. The servers are nice and quick, and the atmosphere is dark but not dingy.

I like that they have a buddy board so you can buy your friends a drink for the next time they come in. That's a fun addition.

This was our first time here - I love all the signs, very clean, good atmosphere.  We got a couple of appetizers to start with deep fried mushroom and some fried dill pickle spears.  I have to say I am not a fan of pickles but these were awesome!  Their homemade ranch was great.  We also got lunch - burgers and a pepper steak sandwich they both were very good.

    We will go back!

I'd give 0 stars if I could. Dropped by during happy hour to get something to eat. Got a beer right away. After about a year, a man helped me summon a staff member to order dinner. Another year later, got a really good salad. Shortly thereafter, got the dinner brought out by the cook. Which was total crap, (sorry) as was the non-existent service. After another year and a half, I was able to get my bill and pay. The first time in my entire life I've left a one dollar tip for something other than a cup of coffee. The band that was setting up as I was leaving looked like they'd be really good, though

This place was very loud! I couldn't even hear myself think! Let alone talk to anyone. We stopped in for a quick drink Friday night after dinner and man I just wanted to get in and get out.

I wouldn't go back here again- at least not on a big weekend night like that. I wonder if it is better during the day? I mean I have been in some loud places but nothing like place. It says on here noise level : average. not even! Try deafening! The drinks were ok.. but limited vodka selection in here. Ugh..

Excellent bar. Not a bad restaurant, either. Strong pours on the mixed drinks. The Steak Bites appetizer is pretty good for a bar. The burgers are better than Burgerville, but not as good as Five Guys. Better liquor selection than most neighborhood bars, they have Tullamore Dew Irish whiskey, which I can't find everywhere. Nice, big, smoking area out back, with a canopy in one corner, for rainy days. There's usually a line for the pool tables, even on weeknights. They have a jukebox, but the music usually isn't loud enough to hear over the chatter. Most of the waitresses are pretty, but ALL of them could beat you up.

Warning the" Shanycakes, potato pancakes" are tater tots baked in pancake batter.  Despite not being what I expected, they were interesting, and okay.  Its never super busy when I've been there. Big selection of beer on tap.  Good mix of friendly people.

Thank you Shanahan's for having your happy hour every day from 3-8!! It's so hard to find a bar with HH after 6. I visited Shanahan's for the first time last night for Tuesday Trivia, which was insanely packed and fun. They have a good number of beers on tap including a few micros, which on Thursdays are only $2.75/pint. The food was good. I'd rank it at bar-food quality, but so cheap it made the food more delicious. I had 1 lb of great spicy wings for $7 off the regular menu. OK spinach and artichoke dip for $4 off the HH menu.

The vibe is typical Irish pub-divey, not a lot of "ambiance" but a good neighborhood spot. The crowd was definitely non-pretentious and everyone was easy going. There are pool tables and a juke box and very nice staff. I will definitely be back when I'm in the mood for a beer and cheap bar food.

    Happy Hour: 3-8pm daily

If you want a heart attack on a plate, get the Shanty Fries.  For four bucks, you get fries and tots drenched in cheese, bacon and green onions.  I attacked it with a will, and found, to my chagrin - and the waitress' vocal disappointment, that I could only devour about a quarter of the immense plate.

Drinks are reasonably cheap, ambiance is decent, and there's wifi.  All good points, but if you're looking to linger over a chat with a friend, you might want to go elsewhere.  They made it pretty clear that - even though there was plenty of space left and we'd had a couple of drinks apiece along with some food - that once we were done ordering it was time to go.

Shanahans is a very friendly bar with great food, excellent service, and a great pub quiz on Tuesday nights with Quizmaster JPP. What more could you ask for? Oh yeah, a great happy hour too! Every time I come here, I order the same barbecue chicken quesadilla. I know that sounds very pedestrian, but honestly, they're killer!

If you're looking for a no-frills, good drinks, and cheap food kind of place, you've found it at Shanahans.

My favorite things about this place.

    1. Jukebox
    2. Strong drinks
    3. Good HH
    4. GREAT people watching
    5. It's close to my hood.
    6. Pool Table
Service can be so-so but I always prefer to sit at the bar and I think you always get better/faster service that way.

Very friendly neighborhood bar.  Awesome tap selection. (Which is weird because there's almost always someone drinking Keystone out of a can. Seriously.)  They've got a pretty incredible happy hour menu that runs from 3pm-8pm every day.
You should be prepared though: They have wood paneling on the walls.

Update 08/05/12: So things are getting more awesome here. They have started a Wednesday night Bacon night from 9-12. A friendly staff member will walk around with bowls of bacon, one per table. GRATIS. And different variety, like Maple, Parmesan and Blood Mary. The awesome level is a little to hard to measure.

The Bloody Mary bar on the weekends has added Ghost Pepper bloody mary mix. . .AND BACON. Big bowls of bacon. Big bowls of BIG bacon. EPIC. Truly Epic.

Here is where you'll find locals in their forties, and the occasional girl with nose buried in fiction.

Saw bagpipes here once, though it wasn't a common thing.

One of the more laid back bars in the Couve, didn't see as many missing teeth, you know?

There was no cover and I like that. Super friendly big guy with sense of humor checking ID at the door.
This place was not too bad. It was a typical local hang out type bar. It had common man feel to it. Not pretentious at all. I could tell that there were quite a few regulars known by name to the staff there too.
When we arrived at about 9, there were a lot of free tables but a steady stream of people arriving. The place seemed clean. The food was delivered in green plastic baskets and quite edible. They have some decent wings too.
Beer prices were good, and food price was right. The Bloody Mary was not very good but its not a drink often done well and will not count against them at all. Its almost an art to make a good one.
There was live music when I arrived. The band was playing hard rock and playing it loud. I moved to a different table to be able to hear my conversation but it did not help. The music was too loud but the bar can not really control that either. The band was good but it was not that kind of night for me. Since it was my first time there, I did not know what to expect so we had to leave so I could talk to my out of town guests.
I will definitely return because the staff is friendly, the prices are good, there is not a cover, there is live music, and food is available.

I'm glad to have discovered Shanahan's.  Excellent happy hour food deals (daily 3-8pm) and great draft beer selection.  Service is super friendly and they have free popcorn - love it!

The bbq is fantastic.  I didn't realize I liked pulled pork so much until I had Shanahan's pulled pork tacos...super tasty.

I wanted to like it...it seems like a great little place.  But my bbq pulled pork sammich was pretty yuck.  Dry, no flavor.  I went at peak lunch time so it's not like it was sitting out a long time or something.  Maybe it was an off day.  I'll try it again to be sure.

Shanahan's. In the 'couve. Whoda thunk it?

I've been in a couple of times now... once on a Sunday night for a quick beverage and some wifi, and again on a Tuesday night for their inaugural Trivia night. Both times I've been impressed with the caliber of the bar and the service.

Shanahan's is easily a cross between a solid Irish bar and a sports bar. The physical space is laid out as you'd expect in your average pub. In the front room, booths and tables, 2 large flat screens up behind the bar (visible from the entire front section of the room), and a pool table area. A large smoking patio with umbrellas sits to the side, and a big room in the back with a mini stage and a very nice, clear, projection TV round out the offerings. The decor is a mix of beer paraphernalia. The style is, well, Irish bar meets sports bar. The vibe is chill.

The beer selection is pretty solid, with some international offerings, local micros, and your traditional macros. Their local macros tend towards Rogue and Deschutes, rather than smaller producers, but I am sure that fits with the market. They also sport a full booze bar. The surprising part is probably the food, which stands a good step or two above your average bar food. They offer a full compliment of burgers, smoked meats, and the like, and they have a pretty large list of ample appetizers and meals for happy hour (3-8pm everyday). I had the pleasure of trying the pulled pork sliders (surprisingly good) and this crazy fries/tots/cheese/bacon/onions monstrosity that looked like something off of man vs. food (and yes, it's on happy hour and on top of that, it's served with ranch). It was the first time in a LONG time that I have not finished a plate of food in front of me, and that's saying a LOT. I could imagine the 'hallelujah' moment I would have had if I had first laid eyes upon this spectacle when deep in the throes of shitfaced-induced-hunger, but seeing it for the first time sober just made me shake my head and drop my jaw.

Try it some time. Seriously. I dare you.

What really tops it all off, however, is the service, Both times I have been in, the service has been top notch. Friendly and efficient, and all around quality. The owners interact well with the customers also, and even coming in as an outsider, I felt as welcome as if I were a regular.

All of the elements come together in this bar to form a really high-quality spot to kick back, be yourself, have some brews, eat some good food, and catch a game. If this place were near my house, I would be a regular for sporting events (especially with the big TV in the back).

Based on the awesome service, good food, wifi, decent beer selection and chill vibe, Shanahan's easily comes in at a solid 4 to 4.5 stars. The only down-side? Well, it's in the 'couve. That's about a 20 minute or more drive from my place.

That said, I can tell the owners really, really give a shit about this place, and to me, that means a lot. They obviously truly care about making this bar as awesome as possible rather than simply angling for a quick buck. Kudos to that. I will definitely be back.

Great pub north of Downtown Vancouver.

$8 pitchers of beer or 5 bucks for a large pitcher of PBR.  Strong drinks without having to ask.  Fast and friendly staff.

The food, especially the smoke meats, are wonderful.  I would suggest a big plate of ribs - smoked right there in the back room.

Pool table, two big rooms, plenty of parking, and close to the freeway for a quick getaway.

Huge smoker friendly patio with lots of seats and umbrellas for the NW weather.

Great place to have lunch, or just relax in the evenings.  Can get pretty packed on weekends.  Nice bar to sit (extra paddings feels good for those marathon Mariner games) at and stare at the HD tv.

Once in a while I walk up to Shanahan's for a late breakfast or lunch. It's a big place with lots of seating, not too busy during mid-day, so I can take up two spots at the counter and read a newspaper without getting in the way. I like the smoked tomato soup for Thursday lunches, and when they say smoked they mean it. Always great food and friendly service. They now have Wi-Fi. It opens daily at 10am and closes late.

Shanahan's is great until about 9:30 PM on a weekend...then it is invaded by weird, loud, obnoxious fratboys. I don't know where they come from, but they are a pain. Other than that, great greasy food, good beer, nice waitresses, large patio if you want to smoke, and decent jukebox. A pretty comfortable place to kick back with a beer.
