Shorty's is great food and great value!  Our food is always delivered in a reasonable time period and is always cooked just right.  The wait-staff is friendly and seems like they really care!  This is definitely a great place to go in Toledo.

What can I say.  Have recommended this place to several people before, the food was great!  However, this last visit was terrible.  The "steak & onion soup" should have stated beef & onion - no steak there, but it was pretty good.  The ribs were FAIR - not great, the green beans had way too much oil on them and the slaw was bland, note that the BBQ beans were really good.  Now for my salad, now does one serve a tasteless salad?  My salad that had onions, tomatoes, cheese, eggs and bacon bits - topped with blue cheese dressing was tasteless!  I only ate half of it and I thought why am I eating this - it's not good at all.

The service was good and they were fairly business on Saturday noon.

Will NOT Be going here again!  Has made my list of no returns!
Mentioned this visit to sister-in-law and she stated the same thing on her last visit, she isn't returning again.....moved on to Smokey Bones in Maumee.  Yummy ribs!

Not gourmet just GOOD!  If you want comfort BBQ with quality skip dave's and head down to shorty's.  The brisket is actually smoked in house and the sides have not been over looked.  The best part, dinner for two $21. NO joke.

    worth the drive

A fantastic place for BBQ, steaks, and more. Great place to go with friends and family, but if it is a Friday or Saturday, you may have a wait for a seat at dinner time ... good thing? It is worth it! Sometimes they are so slammed, the ribs suffer (every once and a while they may come out dry or overcooked) that is the only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars.

Great BBQ. Ribs, Brisket, Pulled Pork, Cornbread - all top notch. Could have used a little more smoke on the Brisket, but it was moist and tender. I'd also like to see some Collards on the menu. This place could easily compete with any Que in Memphis or Texas. Toledo is lucky to have them.

Came here on a Thursday night for what I hoped would be a halfway decent dinner (at least as decent as one can get in Toledo). We were told it would be a quick 20 minute wait but ended up being closer to 45.  Of course by the time we were sat there was a band playing; it was awful, too loud music.  We were placed at a table in a back, dark corner of the restaurant and the loud music only got louder throughout dinner.

The ambiance wasn't great, but I was hoping dinner would make up for that. The food, however, was also sub-par. Overall, the ambiance was a put-off and the food didn't help; it's "just average" BBQ at an average Toledo restaurant.

I wasted one Thursday night on this. Won't be going back.

We had Shorty's cater a party at our house. Everyone loved the food. The customer service was also great. They did a wonderful job setting everything up and making sure everything was there. This goes a long way with me as I've had many restaurants forget items or have terrible service. We have also dined at the restaurant and had good experiences each time. As far as the taste of the food, I have enjoyed the food each time.

Really disappointed on this one...smell was amazing upon entering...however the pulled pork was almost wet when the brought it out, just glad I didn't order buns or they would have been soggy before I even got one bite in! Did learn though that the corn bread muffins are free and unlimited so don't order them as a side dish...as they bring one our immediately after you order your drink

Much better BBQ has passed thru these lips. The potato salad was yummy but frankly that is all the compliments I can give. Really this is a 4 star Toledo?!

Great BBQ in a comfortable, family atmosphere.

Pulled pork, green beans, coleslaw, mac n cheese--all solid choices at a good price.  We'll be back.

The pulled pork is outstanding! And salads and cornbread are fantastic. I highly recommend the Memphis Egg Rolls!

I know...1 star seems pretty harsh. I did not arrive at this rating without giving Shorty's ample opportunity to wow me.
The 1st occasion I dined at Shorty's (several years ago) my spouse and myself tried the ribs. It is a rib joint after all.
We could peel this horrible scotch tape-like film off all out ribs. Absolutely disgusting! We complained, showed the manager, and got weak excuses about how long they slow cook the ribs and how we must be mistaken...like the evidence of scotch tape film isn't obvious enough!
We got a christmas gift certificate to Shorty's later that same year. What an awful gift, right? (Thanks for Nothing, Aunt Mary!) But we tried it again.
This time we completely avoided ribs.
Once again the same awful experience only with new dishes. I suppose the best thing was a below average salad.
I went 1 other time and had chicken wings. They were just normal bar wings and certainly not worth going out of my way to a ribs joint for.
    Sorry.
My family will NEVER EVER be back!

On our return trip from the MI lower peninsula we spent a night in Toledo.  Being in the mood for BBQ we discovered Shorty's, and I'm glad we did.  The atmosphere was great (classy yet casual), the service was quick and helpful with a few menu recommendations (you must order the Memphis Egg Rolls, they are fantastic!), and the food was delicious.  The spicy BBQ sauce was so good that we got a container to take with us.  Prices are very reasonable, too, making this a great experience all around.

The restaurant is very spacious. It seems to be a great place for a large group because they have big booths that look like they could fit 6 people comfortably and lots of room on the floor for even larger groups.

The prices are very reasonable, especially for lunch.  The size of the side salad is surprisingly huge! It's about the size of a regular salad at some restaurants.  The veggies for the side salad looked pretty fresh.  The lunch portions for the meals are adequate.

In terms of taste, I'm not sure if my taste buds were off today but I felt like they could've done better.  I ordered the sweet tea which ended up not being that sweet and seemed pretty watered down. Not to be mean, but McDonald's has a better sweet tea than what I was drinking.

I got the Carolina pulled pork. The meat itself was very tender but wasn't very flavorful.  I wasn't sure if it was purposely made that way so that you could flavor it how you like with the BBQ sauce on the table (they have 2 types of BBQ sauce, mild and medium).

As for the sides, the green beans weren't what you think of when you think of Southern style green beans. They were more like fresh green beans, which isn't bad just different from expected.
The mac and cheese was less than stellar.  I kinda felt like I was eating velveeta mac and cheese. It didn't seem very homemade at all.  Same goes for the beans- it seemed very much like canned baked beans. I'm usually a fan of coleslaw but this one was eh. It really seemed to lack the tanginess that coleslaw usually has. I think I like KFC's coleslaw a lot better! And the portions for the sides were also pretty small. They were a little bigger than the size of the cups that salad dressing on the side comes in.  I'm not sure if it was because it was the lunch portion or if that's how it always comes .

Impressive for mid-west BBQ.  I consider myself a BBQ connoisseur and traveled across the US just for BBQ. The menu had fun options like BBQ nachos and Memphis egg-rolls to step up basic BBQ.  Probably the best
    BBQ in Toledo.

Give it a shot, you might like it.

My two complains are the lack of sauce variety and sometimes service is rather slow.  Neither one a deal breaker for me though.

As my husband (first time I just wrote that), Alex, said in his review, we love Shorty's so much that we decided to have them cater our wedding.  While the food is always consistently delicious in the restaurant, it was even tastier catered (if that's even possible).  The guests even helped themselves to second and third servings!

Besides the fact that the pulled pork, barbecue chicken, macaroni and cheese, green beans, and cornbread were all mouth-watering good, the price was completely reasonable and the service unbeatable.  The staff even helped clear dishes, even though that was not part of their job.  Shorty's was one of the best parts of our wedding, and I will recommend them for every catering even that I hold or help with in the future.

UPDATE: Despite my original impression I was talked in to returning to Shorty's by friends, and I am glad I was.  Perhaps my previous visit was an off day, but this time around things were much better.  Our waitress was friendly, the indoor seating was nice next to the fire, and the food was pretty darn good.  I definitely recommend the hot bbq wings appetizer.  They are crispy, sticky-sweet with a little kick of spice and all around amazing.

    Previous review:
Dry, over-cooked chicken, unremarkable service and a chain style atmosphere is what I experienced at Shorty's.  My wife had a burger and felt the same way.  While, I love to spend my money locally, I won't be going back to Shorty's because it is way overpriced.

I had Shorty's for the first time after I moved out of Toledo when I went up for homecoming last year. My girlfriend suggested here because of how picky my husband and brother-in-law are.

I love BBQ and was expecting really good pulled pork and that is what I received. The pulled pork was juicy and tender. They also had some really great mac n cheese. Even my picky husband and brother-in-law thought the food was really good.

We received excellent service on a busy Friday night and we did not even wait all that long to be seated.

It was a good restaurant that I hope to visit again soon!

Love love love Shorty's, we get it every time we come back to Toledo.  Some of the best brisket I've had.

Awesome pulled pork and brisket.  The pulled pork is always plenty juicy and extremely tender.  The spicy BBQ sauce is great, even if it could be just a tad bit hotter.  Also, PULLED PORK NACHOS.  That's a winner right there.  A few more craft-beers on tap would make the place worthy of 5 Stars.

I agree with the definition of a two-star review: "Meh. I've experienced better". I love the interior and ambiance, but the food doesn't measure up. I think the meats are DRY (there, I said it!) The sides are average. The portions are not proportional to the prices. I want to like it more...I really do!

I love this place, so much that we're actually having them cater our wedding.  A little on the non-traditional, non-fancy side but I'd rather that than the overpriced bland crap that is customary at most weddings.

I can't say I've ever had anything here that I didn't like - consistency is always a good thing.  Their spicy BBQ is awesome; along with their pulled pork and brisket.

And you have the added benefit of supporting a local business!

Update: Wedding was a success!  The catered food was even better than than the restaurant.  I had numerous guests tell me that it was the best wedding food they'd ever had.  On top of that the Shorty's crew went above and beyond - all we expected was that they would take care of the food but they went around and checked on the guests and even cleaned up all of the used plates.  A pleasure to deal with!

Shorty's is awesome!! The food is delicious and well priced. Great value for the money. The North Carolina pulled pork sandwich is fantastic and the mac and cheese is creamy and great! You can also rent the patio for parties. The staff is fantastic and helpful!

    bumping up the rating because:
    - restaurant is certainly in a far better league than another local restaurant that I rated at 2 stars.
    - colleagues rave about "shore tees"
    - I'm a wing fan, and I did mention that these were possibly the best wings I'd ever tasted

Excellent BBQ, and a chopped salad that is amazingly addictive. We usually sit at the bar and always have attentive service; we've never had poor food or service actually, and we visit a few times a month. Also, in my opinion, the salmon is fixed the best at Shorty's out of all of Mancy's restaurants. The portions are surprisingly huge, and the prices are exceptionally reasonable. Go hungry! Don't forget to try the fabulous mac 'n cheese, too, as one of your sides!

By far, the best BBQ.  I get the beef ribs glazed in Shortys hot BBQ sauce.  Corn muffins are cupcakes and awesome!  Amazing Steak soup.  Ashley the bartender is amazing, same with Tim the waiter.  A must visit.  Won't disappoint.

Great food, but make sure to go early on a Friday or Saturday night b/c they're packed!  I go for the classic pulled pork sandwich.  Their sauce is awesome!

Shorty's is a great restaurant! They have wonderful burgers (cooked to your liking) and their barbecue is out of this world. It's also nice that they offer alternative sides like Green Beans. Because sometimes, it's nice to have a healthier choice than french fries. (although their french fries are wonderful too). Great place to meet friends and family.

A Mancy's resturaunt, so one shouldn't be surprised this place is very good.

I'm not that fond of BBQ resturaunts, but this one is my favorite.  I always get the chicken any more, and strip the carcass like a vulture due to how good it is.  The sides are special, like the green beans which are fantastic.

Delicious. Try the half-and-half (half a rack of pork ribs and half a rack of beef ribs), pure smokey goodness. Their sides are ok, but not great. The serving sizes for their bbq beans, potato salads are pretty small but the fries do come in plentiful portions so keep that in mind. Their brisket is also rather tender and delicious and goes well either on a sandwich or as a plate, can't go wrong either way.

Ridiculously delicious. I live out of town, but when I come to Toledo, I HAVE to eat at Shorty's...sometimes 2 or even 3 times per trip.

I usually get the Memphis Eggrolls with that amazing sauce then move to the Carolina Pulled Pork for my entree. It is the best pulled pork I've ever had (including eating at Memphis in May which is the "world series" of BBQ).

For lunch, sometimes I will get the Memphis Eggrolls and their chili that has chunks of meat (brisket, I think) and it is incredible.

The service, food and atmosphere are terrific. The Mancy family sure knows how to run restaurants and this one is no exeception!

This was my go to restaurant when I lived in Toledo.  It never disappointed.

The ribs are fantastic.  The pulled pork and brisket were also great.  Good macaroni as a side, the cornbread muffin is delicious.  Good fries.  Really, I never had a disappoint meal at Shorty's.  I grew up on bbq in the Kansas City area, then parents moves to St. Louis got their bbq.  Shorty's is right up there with the best of those places.  And believe me, KC and St. Louis know bbq.

The secret to their deliciousness?  Well, good cuts of meat helped, but their BBQ sauce is great.  I love it.  It was a requirement that I went in and bought a couple tubs of it (they can be bought at the counter up front) to bring home to my parents when I went to see them.  There is no restaurant I miss more than Shorty's now that I no longer live in Toledo.

We had a very nice time when we stopped here on the way back from the zoo.  Drinks were well made and nicely priced.  Food was good and provided a good value.  Atmosphere was fine, as well.

Best barbecue in town with fair prices on food although drink prices are high on the microbrews. Ribs, fish, pulled pork and brisket have all been top notch though.

Best BBQ I've gotten in Ohio. The decor is simple, but has a pretty rustic feel: There's lots of exposed wood and a fireplace. Perfect atmosphere for eating BBQ.

I've tried the ribs, chicken and pulled pork. The pulled pork and ribs are both solid options, but the chicken blew me away. Very juicy, well seasoned and a huge portion for the price (I took enough home for dinner the next day). Definitely a great deal!

They offer two BBQ sauce options in bottles on the table (one sweet, one spicy), in addition to the standard BBQ sauce that comes on the pork/ribs/chicken/beef. The sauce is definitely where it's at, especially the spicy BBQ sauce.

    As for the sides:

Corn Bread Muffins: excellent. Easily the best side on their menu in my opinion. No real reason to order these as sides though, since they come free.

Mac & Cheese: ehhh. I wanted to like this (since I love mac & cheese), but I wasn't such a fan. If you're into really creamy mac & cheese though (think Velveeta), then you should try it.

    Green Beans: simple, good.

    French Fries: ok.

I'd definitely recommend it, for the BBQ and the corn bread muffins.

It was okay...but I have definitely had better. The food it does have is enjoyable, but there isn't much selection.  I still overall had a good time, but it just wasn't as good as some other places that I have visited and loved.  It was kind of pricey for the quality.  Service was okay but not the best either...no one seemed enthusiastic to be there or to serve and sometimes it took awhile for someone to check on us.  The atmosphere of the place is really nice though and it's one of the only BBQ places in Toledo area.
