Really a 3.5 :) Â The cuban hash and eggs (can't remember the exact name but its shrimp, sausage, potatoes and egs) is delicious. Â Pitcher of mimosas is a great deal and the service - both bar and table was excellent. Was disappointed in the huevos rancheros; this was was an omelet instead of eggs with hash/beans/etc. i'll be back - only reason a 3 is that nothing was stunning.
Review Source:I was trying to try one more burger place for Burger Week to qualify for the contest before flying home to California, so I ended up making a late night burger run. I ended up at Sidewalk Cafe, which is open (and serves its full menu) until 1:30AM.
I wanted to try Sidewalk Cafe's featured Burger Week burger anyway, since it sounded very unique (beef burger topped with Smithfield ham, fried oysters, and cucumber-peanut relish). The burger was very tasty and flavorful! It was a little dry overall, but delicious, and I appreciated the toasted bun. The burger was also served with fries. I ordered a cup of the soup of the day (white bean with bacon) too.
Portions here seem pretty generous, and the menu is extensive. The restaurant was a bit dark and noisy when I went, but it was 10:30PM, and a lot of customers were drinking at the bar. I can see how it might be a little work to find street parking during busy times of the day, since the restaurant is right on Main St. It's not really that big of restaurant either.
My waitress was very friendly, and checked on me several times throughout the meal. She apologized for the scraps on the table at the booth I had chosen to sit in when she brought the menu, and immediately wiped down the table thoroughly. She explained the specials of the day (which were written on a lined piece of paper), including the Burger Week deal. Little did she know that I came here precisely for Burger Week! ;D
Overall, the food is good, and the value is even better. The Sidewalk Cafe is also a great place to come if you ever need to grab a bite to eat late at night.
Went here for brunch on a Saturday; this place was poppin' with hungry/hungover customers! Â We were a group of 4 and lucky to grab a booth within a few minutes but you'll need to wait a bit during peak hours. Â Ordered a mimosa pitcher for $10 which gave us 4 good-sized glasses so it's a pretty good deal. Â Got the Cajun hash and eggs which were good but I wish they had more spice (thank you, Hot Sauce). Â Food was super filling; ended up taking home some leftover potatoes and made my own hash browns at home! Â I wouldn't say it's the best brunch food in Richmond, but it's all about the local vibe.
Service was a tad slow but it was very busy and since it is such a local spot, I think the staff is not as rushed and assume their customers are happy to chill out (this is when you order a second mimosa pitcher). Â Sidewalk Cafe is definitely a great divey spot serving heavy breakfast food at cheap prices and they play some kickin' tunes. Â Check it out next time you're looking for a heavy Richmond brunch.
Puts the "fun" in Sunday Funday! Â If you are looking to be entertained while you enjoy a delicious Sunday brunch, then Sidewalk is for you. Â Very high energy, neighborhood feel. Â If you plan to go with a big group you should either arrive early or late- there is usually a wait given its popularity. Â A highlight of many of my Sunday mornings for sure. Â Great food and service.
Review Source:Excellent Sunday brunch! Â Eggs anyway you want and the crispiest skillet potatoes anywhere. Â I had the Sidewalk Benedict. Â DH had the Cajun breakfast. Â The service is as good as the food.
On this particular Sunday, they were down with a 1970s funk music revue, making for a very energetic start for a lazy Sunday.
Sidewalk feels like a neighborhood place, even if you no longer live in the neighborhood. The bartenders/servers are always super friendly. The neighborhood dive vibe immediately hits you when you enter the door--as does the smell of one too many beers having spilled on the floor. If you can get past the frat house smell, you will have a great time.
They have great beers on tap and the food is not what you would expect from a place like this. Huge portions...you can definitely order something and share. Last time we were there my husband had the Italian sub, which was great as usual. The portobello sandwich that I ordered was pretty standard and nothing that I couldn't have made at home. My son had the hummus platter and that was the real standout-- delicious hummus surrounded by pita bread, good feta, kalamata olives, cucumbers and tomatoes. Â Yum. Â Next time I will order that and feel "healthy" while I drink my beers.
This is definitely a dive bar but the food is a notch up from what you would expect in a typical dive.
I have been here for Sunday brunch, happy hour, in the evening for dinner and drinks and after a night of drinking in the Slip and only had bad service once. That was on a busy Friday night and they were packed.
The food is consistently good with really large portions so you might consider just sharing something.
Sunday brunch is the best. Pitchers of mimosas, great breakfast and a good crowd are a great way to start your Sunday.
Staff is highly entertaining! Excellent food for a dive bar. Order the fried calamari tossed in buffalo sauce.... I have no idea who came up with this but I'd like to kiss them. Actually, Sidewalk is barely a dive bar... I'd say it's a high end dive... if that exists? Anyway it's a neighborhood favorite for good reason.
Review Source:I'm really torn on this review of my dinner experience here.
First -- let me say the food I had was DELICIOUS. I had the chicken quesadilla, and expected a typical 'bar' quesadilla, but it was huge. Lots of chicken, cheese, peppers, onions, tomatoes, plenty of salsa, and enough sour cream to last a lifetime. I was pleasantly pleased, and glad I just got the appetizer and not the whole meal (could have also had black beans and rice - not needed at all).
My husband's meal was a little underwhelming. Great french fries that came along with a gyro. At first look, the gyro looked great with lots of fresh veggies and wrapped in a grilled pita, but once he started eating, it seemed like the meat had been prepackaged and just seemed a bit too oily.
The vibe - definitely a dive bar. This isn't somewhere you want to take family when they visit you in town. I'm not sure how it would feel for breakfast or lunch, but it definitely has more of a 'late night munchies' feel than a nice dinner. Either way, we left full, satisfied, and smelling slightly of that 'stale bar' smell. I'm sure we'll go back... just maybe in the afternoon when not too many characters are around.
Best black bean burger I've ever had, hands down. Took a bunch of friends from out of town once and they all loved it. Huge portions of delicious food, the only down side is it can get SUPER loud, especially sunday brunch time when it's full of early day wastey-faces--not that I'm judging, I am all about boozy brunch and it was fun and the noise is just part of the vibe, but we practically had to yell to hear each other and a drunk girl kept coming over to our table and wrapping her scarf around me. I thought all of this was hilarious but I mean, I could see others maybe not. It's not always that crazy though and usually it feels just like any other divey bar/restaurant.
Review Source:I'm not going to lie: I love a good dive bar and Sidewalk fits the bill.
We love coming here on a Friday evening after a long week and taking advantage of their $2 domestics, an order of buffalo wings (yummmmm) and the greek spaghetti. Â All the pasta dishes are huge so unless you haven't eaten for the past 3 days, you'll probably want to split them.
If you're looking for frills, don't come here. The specials are usually handwritten on a piece of notebook paper, if there are specials at all. However, if you're looking for good food and easy going people, definitely give Sidewalk a try.
Love Sidewalk! Â I just moved to Richmond and this is the first place my boyfriend took me to eat. Â Both the food and atmosphere were enjoyable. Â My first time here we ordered loaded french fries and each ordered a sandwich. Â There were SO MANY delicious cheese-and-other-stuff smothered fries that I didn't have enough room for my sammie and happily took it home. Â I've also had their spaghetti and meatball which is also tasty and there is so much that I can make 2 meals of it. Â My boyfriend likes their pesto chicken penne, also very tasty. Â It's a very casual, fun atmosphere and the music makes it impossible to sit still. Â I will definitely be visiting regularly!
Review Source:Lunch Review:
I've been a couple of times for business lunches during the weekdays and I got to admit, I was impressed. Â Some might call the atmosphere "Divey", but the lunch menu is expansive, the portions are ample, the service is great, and the prices are right.
I know this place is a night spot as well, and I can't speak to that, yet....
Before moving to Richmond, I really didn't see myself ordering a pitcher of mimosa, followed by a round of Van Gogh shots - all before noon (and a food order). But I guess when Edwina is at the helm, I'm having fun that day! The best part: no question about what young men she likes that day... this is entertainment!
Review Source:I had a garden burrito and added chicken. This was my attempt to get something a little on the healthier/lighter side. Unfortunately it was covered in cheese and sour cream, oh ,and it was HUGE.
I was a bit disappointed because it wasn't what I expected, but it was still pretty good. Veggies were sauteed and chicken was good.
My companion had a greek platter that looked really good. If I go back, I'd have that.
Whitney Houston sing-along and dance party with a side of eggs and mimosas? Â
This is exactly what I found at Sidewalk's brunch this past Saturday. From the moment I walked in, I was totally captivated by the upbeat, energetic, and welcoming atmosphere. Â In honor of the late singer, Whitney's music was blasting throughout the restaurant and practically every single table was singing along to the songs. Â As we waited for a table (probably 20-30 minutes), my friends and I danced AND sang to the music- and we were not alone. Â I'm no stranger to busting a move in a variety of settings, so it was nice to witness other people doing the same thing! Â
Once we sat down, the fun only continued. Â We danced in our seats, sang, and made friends with other patrons; behavior typically found at a bar not at a brunch spot. Â Of course, our reason for going was to nosh on some grub and the food did not disappoint. Â I ordered the huevos rancheros and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND them. Â Eggs with cheese, onions, black beans, peppers topped with just the right amount of salsa and sour cream. Â And they came with a side of potatoes that were seasoned to perfection. Â The portion was huge, but I did my best to do the dish proud. Â Of course we enjoyed pitchers of mimosas as well- what better way to compliment a mid-day meal than with champagne and oj?
If you eat meat, I've heard the Eggs Edwina (named after their infamous server who gives the best engagement toast- and her birthday celebratory shots aren't bad either) is a delicious choice.
This neighborhood joint is the place to be for a casual (emphasis on the casual- this place is by no means fancy), leisurely weekend meal. Â Be prepared to wait for a table during brunch hours, but I promise you the wait is totally worth it.
When I lived a block away from Sidewalk, I never went. Â When I moved several miles away, that's when I started to go. Â It's (almost) always busy whether you go for breakfast, lunch or dinner, but I've always had a good time here. Â The food is slightly better than your average bar food, and portions are huge. Â And they always seem to be open when no one else is. Â Three and a half stars is too low, and four might be a bit too high.
Review Source:I must admit i have never entered Sidewalk Cafe in the daylight hours. Â I promise this is on my to do list as i have heard good things. Â As a place to drink your night away this is a must stop...usually one of the last places I will hit as it is best known as "The Last Last Call In Richmond". Â
The staff is always fun and the people are always entertaining. Â End your night out on a high note here people! Â You can be getting your last drink as you watch everyone else already walking home since their ending bar of choice already kicked them out.
I may have to give this place a second chance. I mean, the amount of praise this place received from friends was pretty staggering and then to come in and experience what I did was a little underwhelming.
First of all, I have already learned to just never be in a rush when I go out to eat anymore. We gathered shortly after one and were in the restaurant just under an hour and a half, and since our food consisted primary of eggs and toast, I'm assuming that the restaurant has a typical household range in the kitchen with 4 eyes and an oven. Again, wasn't in any kind of rush, but just to give an accurate assessment of the time you'll be spending in there on a Sunday. Considering the place is the size of a nice studio/1 bedroom apartment, it does get crowded and the time drag mandates that you come with good company.
Since brunch was still an option we checked out that menu. Immediately I was pulled towards the Cajun Hash & Eggs, although there were a couple of other menu items that were somewhat attractive as well, my live for Cajun spices and flavor really had me salivating. Mayhaps it was my fault, but I conjured images of New Orleans and a skillet coming out to me with expertly seasoned shrimp and andouille on top of some potatoey concoction, underneath a runny egg. The majority of the ingredients were there: eggs, sausage, shrimp, and potatoes. Oddly enough it lacked any sort of flare to even get confused with something out of the bayou. In DC, we would often reflect on how "whitewashed" food would become when it moved into certain pockets and lose much of its authentic qualities. This is not a Cajun restaurant, so perhaps I shouldn't get excited about mislabeled menu items.
The Bloody Mary was decent, although, especially salty.
I don't usually give 2 stars and say that I would go back, but here I would. I was given a bunch of flack from a friend because I wanted to go someplace else, but it wasn't authentically "Richmond" enough; it was too corporate and the food wasn't that good. Let's just say this, to those like me, who feel like it's very hard to distinguish yourself when you're serving breakfast foods. It's eggs, meat, and starch.. and it's the same regardless of where you go. I most likely won't suggest a future brunch here (too crowded and we just happened to get lucky and get a table), but there is food on the menu that I feel might be worth a future trip. I just hope that the taste my brain says should be there is there the next time.
Good food, good beer, cool neighborhood vibe - what else can you ask for. Â I was visiting from out of town and my ex recommended this place to me - it was spot on.
Don't expect high class - this is The Fan all the way - laid back with eclectic decorations in a tiny bar.
I ordered the portebella mushroom sandwhich - it rocked.
Found out a friend lives near here and an older friend used to go here while attending VCU.
I think I will come hang out here again on my next trip to Richmond.
Just ate here today for the first time. Â I had previously visited Sidewalk Cafe for drinks so I had a hard time viewing it as much more than a bar. Â When we went it was about 3:00pm so the whole place was pretty empty... Â
I ordered black bean quesadillas, and my friend ordered a meatball sub and french fries. Â I have to say it was really good. Â Everything was just seasoned really well. Â The prices weren't too bad either. Â All the sandwiches and subs were roughly $8.75. Â $2.50 for a drink... Â Two people and our bill came out to $25.20. Â And as everyone has said, the portions are huge so you will almost definitely have left overs. Â
The only complaint I would have is that the menu is just too... Â big? Â It's a bit overwhelming when you sit down. Â It's almost like they couldn't decide what kind of restaurant they wanted to be so they decided to try a little bit of everything: Â Greek, Italian, American, etc...
Just want to give a shout out on a few menu items:  Love the Chicken Quesadillas, live for the Rowland Chicken Sandwich  (Grilled Chix Breast, BBQ sauce, chedder, ham, LTM) and they do a mean Chicken Parmesan Sammy and Steak Sandwich, all sampled over the last few months.  Get u some!
Review Source:Sidewalk Cafe is my favorite brunch spot in the Fan. Â It's like they forget to turn the music down after everyone leaves on Saturday night, and the party just rolls on into Sunday afternoon. Â The mimosa pitchers keep the feeling right, and the food never disappoints. Â Ever.
My favorite dish is the Cajun Eggs & Hash, but I've also done the big breakfast and can tell you it's all good.
Oh yeah, Edwina is a hoot and always entertaining. Â And if there was an attire option less casual than "casual," I would have picked that.
Sidewalk is one of those great hole-in-the-wall bars where you know you can get a solid meal or drink any time of day. The decor is eclectic, the servers are friendly, it's always fairly busy and the portions are huge. The food is American with some Greek and Italian dishes, too.
Brunch is my favorite time to go. Along with pitchers of mimosas (who doesn't love that?!) you'll find standards like French toast and pancakes, along with some original creations. Eggs Sarduci is an English muffin, spinach, tomatoes, fried eggs and Swiss cheese served with potatoes. Eggs Edwina is an English muffin topped with tomatoes, bacon, fried eggs and Fontina cheese served with potatoes. Both are delish. There's also Cajun hash, heuvos rancheros and an awesome Greek omelet that's served on a pita.
Lunch and dinner fare include appetizers, sandwiches, pizza and entrees. I love the portobello mushroom salad with house vinaigrette. The pasta dishes are incredibly huge filled with flavor. You could easily split them. Fans of cream sauces must try the Carbonara with bacon and peas. It's very indulgent, but worth every calorie.
Along with the food, the bar here is always filled with friendly regulars. It's a great place to hang out, grab a few drinks and make new friends. Sidewalk is also known for showing soccer games on a big TV.
Food was pretty good, but not worth the $15 dollars I spent getting a chicken sandwich, fries, and a coke. Although I did enjoy the little show that went on. <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DbBs6fu78YRs&s=4aa42e65b7ff3eb6a028ae86f2f13f752e776282aba1a92b2d36e99a2b2573b0" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.youtube.com/w…</a>
Review Source:I've tried to like this place, a lot of my friends do... but I've failed to be impressed. I get that it is likely a good bar, but the food is sub-par.
Just tonight I got the tuna special, ordered it rare, and it came out fully cooked. The flavor was ok, but overcooked tuna is soo bad.
I've gone for brunch and felt like I was sitting in a smoke pit. Food was forgettable and I just didn't get the appeal. They do, however, have pitchers of mimosas.
