Well, I give up on this Silver Diner because I never knew when I was going to get the meal I ordered the way I wanted it.  Is it so much to ask that your french fries be as hot as the burger?  I don't think so.  I'm not going back because although I liked the food, when it came out hot and right, the wait staff is more interested in playing and talking (in dining rm as well as behind the partition) and the place is getting dirty again.  The last time we encountered a problem, the manager came over, then never came back.  We had to send 1 of the orders back and ended up sharing enough to curb our hunger before we left.  Gosh, all I want is consistent service, decent food prepared as described, and a clean environment to eat it in.  Sure wish this diner was cleaner and ran more efficiently cuz I do like Silver Diner's concept.

Even though the restaurant offers a free entree if the place is dirty, why would I want to eat it there?  Management needs to spend more time in this restaurant.

Went to Silver Diner tonight. A lot of cars in the parking lot.  My husband thought we would have to wait.  No wait, went right in, got a booth.  Our waiter, Phillip, was GREAT.  I ordered a salad and my husband a sandwich.  Both were great.  Phillip checked on us several times.  I was impressed.  I am not a 5 star kind of person - and don't give those out .  For the service, Yes.  He was the best.  Everything else was great, too - I would recommend this Silver Diner.

    Typical Silver Dinner.

Really good food, the steak cook and breakfast cook are amazing.

The staff is friendly but there is nothing that pops out compared to other Silver Dinner.

It's usually packed and slow on service(but busy so expected)

    Still a great place

So I'm no expert in the NoVA area by all means, but based on the last 3 times I've been out here, I haven't found that WOW restaurant factor unless I'm in the Arlington area. CRITICS! Before you say anymore- I haven't ventured out to Alexandria area out yet. That's TBD fairly soon!

Anyway, prior to meeting with some family for a day at the local casinos, my mom and I opted for breakfast for some QT time. My cousin had suggested the Silver Diner recently as that farm fresh feel was hitting a craving.

I was lucky enough to order the Bison Hash which I highly recommend. Completely filled with flavor and the oversized multigrain tortilla chip and side of guacamole was a great combo. My mom unfortunately got the cornbeef hash which usually on the west coast is as safe as you can get. But the cornbeef hash was just not looking right. Bland and looking as if it was thrown out from the can, my mom kept stealing bites from my own plate. Which was A-OK with me!

Service was great and It was a good thing we got in by 9 because by the time we left at 10 the line was out the door. REALLY??

So- Bison Hash is a GO but stay away away from that Cornbeef Hash!

I forgot why I found this place awful. Then I had a quick reminder today. the Caesar salad was old. The dressing that comes in a little cut had developed a skin. I order the Buffalo Chop. It made no mention on the menu that it was ground buffalo meat (it could be a mix of buffalo and beef to save cost// Just an assumption). They even messed up on my friend's club sandwich with dried turkey and skimpy toppings. Their home fries are burnt.
Its kinda cold and, now that it's christmas time, they have christmas music playing. I had to put some Otis Redding on or everyone's 5 senses would suffer.
Waiter was great. I tipped him well.
I'm not coming back; I wont forget that ever again.

Best breakfast place I know in Springfield...not that there's much to choose from in the local area.  They're open all day and also serve lunch and dinner but I've been there only for their breakfasts.  Food's good and the diner is in a very convenient location.  Everything I've had has been very good but I've noticed a drop in overall service lately...don't get me wrong, the servers are still very friendly, it's just that the Silver Diner is beginning to forget the basics.  I understand, it's a diner, being greasy is part of the experience but I'm running across the table tops sticky from the previous occupants' syrup drippings, salt and pepper shakers heavy with grease, sugar packets missing and food coming out lukewarm more frequently.  Not a big deal but still a bit irritating to be served hot pancakes, lukewarm sausages and cool over-medium eggs.

Nice ambiance with dark wood panels, and stainless steel light fixtures and chair railings. I think they only have booths and a counter but maybe there's a seating area with tables? Each booth has a personal working "authentic" jukebox with oldies and modern songs.  Tables, seats, floors, and restrooms all seemed tidy and clean.
Our food server was Joe.  He had a friendly demeanor and took very good care of us .  This was consistent throughout the service.
The menu was quite extensive so plenty of choices with breakfast (served all day), lunch, and dinner items.  They push local food sources so expect eggs, produce, and meat from PA, MD and VA.  It was cool to see that the source for their burgers, e.g., were grass fed hormone free beef. So it's that kind of place, similar to the concept at Walker'sGrill (see my review).
It's not a place I usually go to but I had a coupon so why not give it a try.  Ordered the sliders, and the fried flounder plate.  There was only one other fish to chose from, grilled salmon.  It took about 20 minutes for the food to come out, a little too long of a wait.  The fried fish and french fries were lukewarm by the time it arrived to the table.  Thumbs down for me.
The highlight was the ceasar dressing on my salad; it was tangy, creamy, and had a vibrancy to it.  I meant to ask if it was made in-house.
Next time we come by, I'll try the breakfast items like the french toast and even one of their scrumptious looking desserts.  Joe recommended a shake, and I was tempted to try the Vietnamese coffee shake but will save it for another day.

This diner was a welcome site after arriving on a red eye. They were kind enough to mix the sliders with a combo of salmon for two of them and beef for the third slider. Their attention to deal and personal service was a welcome experience. Thanks guys!

Excellent place.  The staff was very very warm and welcoming.  They had a very good looking menu, great options, healthy and non-healthy.  I had the Fish & Chips, and the portion size was very good, taste and quality was also excellent.  Will definitely return because it was a great environment, quality food and overall excellent.

So this is the "new" Silver Diner, with some menu items that are sourced locally, and more interesting choices too.

Huevos Rancheros, which featured a bison hash, were very good, although the hash was a bit over salted.  The more traditional eggs, home fries, pork sausage and a biscuit, while standard fare for Silver Diner, were equally good.  Love sitting at the counter in front of the coffee machine too!  Never a problem getting a quick refill.

There are those angry and overly dramatic Yelpers who would start their reviews something along the line of "If I could give this place no stars, I would, but unfortunately I have to give it one star" or "This place deserves no star!" My experience at Silver Diner is the exact opposite from that.  If I could give this place more than 5 stars, I would.

Hurricane Sandy knocked out the power at my house and realizing that I could not use my coffee grinder was not a happy thought. Luckily, with the Yelp iPhone app, I could easily look up the phone number for this place and checked if they had electricity. Fortunately, they did.

I had been to this place a few times and everytime they were consistently good (3 - 4 stars rating); however my experience was very positive so I have to say something about it starting with our server, Delia. Delia was very pleasant. She was very good with recommending the food items. She said that all the items on the menu can be altered to my liking. I had the Egg Sandwich and she recommended the wheat toast which was delicious. I think it's the best thing I ever had at this restaurant. Since we dined here on a Tuesday morning, there was a breakfast special menu valid on weekday so the prices are lower and they come with coffee and juice. Of course, I have to be difficult and asked her to blend a mix of cranberry, apply and orange juices for me. It was very good and I ended up taking the left over juice home. My husband and son enjoyed their breakfasts as well. The hubby had the Country Griddle breakfast and my son ordered the Silver Dollar pancakes with bacon and strawberry.

Due to Hurricane Sandy, local schools were closed for 2 days. At a table near ours, there were two kids sitting by themselves. After watching them for a bit, I assumed that they were there because their parents couldn't find childcare for them so their dad brought them along. They were well behaved playing their hand-held games. I saw a couple of employees checking in on them. To me, this is a big fat A+ in my book for management to allow an employee to bring in their children in an uncontrollable circumstance like this.

Bad:  They once forgot to put our order in and it took literally an hour to get our food.  HOWEVER, the manager personally apologized, give us 10% off the current meal AND gave us coupons for free meals (each one in our party) the next time we come.  We were pretty pissed, but the food was great when it came out and they essentially gave us a free meal.

Other than that, each time I've been there, the food has been great.  Fresh, well-presented and tastes great.  I also love the fact that they have calorie counts and nutritional information on their healthier selections.

The restaurant has been a bit nippy the last few times we went (and this was in the summer), but I think it's a ploy to get people to order hot chocolate (which I did).

I decided to go here with a good friend at an odd time of 3:00 PM. It was my first time going here, and I don't have much to base off of on the food since we only ordered Cheese Fries and Buffalo Wings as "snacks". The service was awesome, our waitress was very bubbly and flamboyant, she definitely made me want to come back just for the service. Honestly, I was a little disappointed with the food. It took a pretty long while to come out. I was expecting the cheese on the fries to be hot and melting (but found the opposite, it was dry and stuck to the fries), but the whole dish was very cool and not warm at all as if they left it out too long before giving it to us. The sauce that came with the cheese fries had a film of water on top which was gross.. The buffalo wings were alright, didn't stand out to me. I'll probably come back to try other stuff from this place again though.

My husband is a huge breakfast aficionado, and he LOVES Silver Diner. I'm pretty sure he'd eat here every weekend if I let him.

The atmosphere is fun: a 50's diner theme with relics from the era around the restaurant. They even have a milkshake counter with stools when you walk in, and mini-jukeboxes at each table.

The staff has always been very pleasant and attentive. We were here after the derecho, which was a rough day on everyone in the area, and the server offered to charge someone's phone for them in one of the outlets - very nice.

As stated before, my husband absolutely loves their breakfast. He usually orders whatever specialty omelette they have on the menu. The ingredients are all typically local farm to table. With the generously sized omelette, he also receives a fruit side and toast. This usually runs around $12 or so.

I typically order their tomato basil sandwich, which is really good. I have also tried the pesto burger, and that was also delicious. They have great sweet potato fries, too!  These types of meals will usually run around $10 or so.

The milkshakes are the best thing about this place. They are at the top of my list of best milkshakes in the area, tied with Good Stuff Eatery. My husband and I always split the Chunky Monkey (banana, chocolate chips, peanut butter, ice cream, etc.). The shake will run you about $5.99, but it's worth it, and there's plenty to share.

As others have mentioned, they do have a loyalty card you can get that will give you points if you visit frequently, and more surprisingly, it also includes a full meal on your birthday AND a dessert.

Also, they have beer for the adults, and crayons for the kids. Everyone is happy.

If I were to eat Diner food, I would eat here again. Trying to be as healthy as possible with an American menu and Diner attitude. Good service, gluten free pancakes, all your heart desires.

Open most holidays, easy free parking, best part is you can wear your PJs here and not feel weird. (not that I tried but my grandkid did)

TIP: Get a Free Frequent diners card if you plan to return. Worth it.

This place rocks!  I am a vegetarian only cook with organic food in my own home.  To see that they had many vegetarian options and organic options was great!

The service is always top notch!  Friendly, helpful, the best!  Come on Sunday to hear the "Biscuit Boy" sing!

I had lunch yesterday at the Silver Diner and it was fantastic!  I had half a Southwestern Turkey sandwich and a small summer citrus salad- delicious! My bf had the same salad with salmon and the crab and corn chowder...yum! Everything was fresh, well-seasoned and cooked perfectly.  I really can't think of anything I did not like about the place. Service was great, jukebox was cool, loved it!  Will definitely be back!

Sunday brunch at Silver Diner has become a ritual in our house. My boyfriend and I look forward to our breakfast every week.  Sure we both order the exact same thing every time but it is always fresh, hot and delicious.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?  I get the mushroom, feta and spinach omelet with egg whites, grits and wheat toast. My boyfriend orders the goat cheese omelet with balsamic tomatoes, rye toast and veggie sausage.  While I love my omelet, it is the awesome toast that really sets this place apart. I applaud them for putting the time and energy into baking their bread in-house.  The extra effort shines through in the crusty, fresh and flavorful toast.

Our favorite waiter is Victor. He is a sweetheart and always makes an effort to come by our table to chat.  The Silver Diner atmosphere is a bit corporate (after all it is a franchise) but the awesome staff make it warm and welcoming.

The Springfield Mall is pretty depressing, but this Silver Diner brings life and light to the Mall and Springfield in general. It is by far the best breakfast in the area. The food is fresh, hot and delicious week after week after week.

First off, the service was some of the best I've ever received. Our waitress was hilarious, charming, and upbeat. She checked in frequently, had great suggestions, and sung along with us when we played the jukebox.

It's a cute little diner with fresher ingredients (it really shows) and some good hormone free burgers. I had the All American Trio Burger Sliders and they were great! I also got a slice of apple pie for the road and it was DELICIOUS, really good soft apples and a pie crust that was the perfect amount of sweet. Definitely will go back next time I'm in NOVA.

It's my favorite breakfast chain, and this one has always been good to me.

The greeter, a slim little woman was dour and sour and barked at me. Honey, go somewhere else and work. That ain't the vibe here: "I told you to wait!"
    1. Don't ever talk like that to a customer
    2. Speak up
    3. Smile. Everybody's tip depends on you

Once I got past Prunella Gotgas, everything was better. Well, almost. Prunella having no damn sense put me next to a table of the most foul mouth middle aged men I have ever seen. Nobody should ever use that kind of language in public, and they should have been told to shut up, pay up, get up, and get out. Nasty.

But, Kelly was my server and was totally gracious and better than the lot of these fools. I found a gluten free breakfast quickly thanks to a very nice and clearly designed menu.  Kelly kept that coffe coming, I kept working.  No complaints - these were the first waffles I've had in years. No syrup, but I wouldn't have risked it: I'm allergic to corn, as well.

In the middle of breakfast, a fine young tenor erupts. The famous Biscuit Boy starts to sing. Nice voice, amusing and a nice touch!

I was out quickly, with a completely non regrettable meal that was a darn good deal on the whole.

We wanted breakfast and mimosas, but nothing too fancy. Luckily, Silver Diner is right down the street. I've always thought it was on the good end of diners, from my days in Annapolis, but boyfriend hadn't been before and I hadn't been in AGES.

At about 1030 on a Saturday morning, it was crowded but not packed, so were seated right away. We ordered mimosas, in which they put strawberry and peach along with the classic OJ and champagne. It was REALLY GOOD, especially since it was only $5. He focused right away on two things: the pronouncements of local ingredients that are now all over the place, which made him happy, and the jukebox on the table, which made him REALLY happy :)

I ordered the bison and chorizo huevos rancheros, which just looked too good to pass up - a bison and chorizo hash, two eggs over easy on top, goat cheese, and what they called chunky avocado but was actually more like guac minus spices. He decided he didn't really want breakfast, and ordered a chicken cheesesteak, no may, add mushrooms. Our food came out about as quickly as you'd expect from a diner, and his special order parts were right, but they'd put in a regular cheesesteak instead of chicken. He decided that was OK by him, and clearly he enjoyed it because he ate the whole thing :) Mine was as good as it sounded like it was going to be, and I was pleasantly surprised that it was not as big as it looked on the menu, so I didn't feel quite so gross when I finished the plate.

I was happy to see that Silver Diner still has it. The ingredients are obviously higher quality than you'd get at your standard diner, and while there is plenty of the standard diner fare, its obvious that they've taken the time to think through the menu and create interesting sides (like the vegan slaw that came with his sandwich that he said was awesome) and creative entrees. Oh, and healthy options too. And booze. And the diner atmosphere lives on, from the classic decor to the tabletop jukeboxes and the counter service. There's really nothing bad I can say about Silver Diner, other than keep up the good work!

Yum, yum, yum! Love their gluten free menu (including the Vans wafffles) and just the all around feel of this place. Good prices, farm to table philosophy, no frills, but great food. I can't wait to try the gluten free ice cream Sundae on my next visit!

Farm to table?  At a diner?  Surprising, and it actually shows.

My wife and I travel from NY to Raleigh NC a few times each year.  We travel with dogs, and need to stop half-way because we just can't handle it in one shot.  We choose to stay in a nearby hotel BECAUSE of the Silver Diner!

The food here, is very good, and a quite imaginative menu for a diner environment.  Buffalo hash was wonderfully delicious, and breakfast items are often served with fresh strawberries (not a couple as garnish, but a little bowl of them).

For breakfast, eggs are always perfectly prepared, and the servers are SMART, attentive, and always sporting a positive attitude.

If you're wanting something different, fresh, and feeling wholesome, THIS is a great stop to make!

Tucked away in a mall parking lot, we found the Silver Diner through a quick Google search. We had attended a wedding the night before, ate well, and was chilled to our bones in a cold, spring evening rain. Being surprisingly hungry the next morning, we wanted a full, traditional breakfast.

The diner is unassuming from the outside, but the interior sports an excellent art deco theme with great depictions from the 20's, 30's, and 40's.  We were seated immediately on a Monday morning, and our server took our order very quickly. The breakfast specials were a hit, as well as the grapefruit juice.

The food came out about the same time, and it looked delicious. Three of us ordered grits, eggs and home fries. I have to say, the grits had a great texture, but they were very bland, even with cheddar.  The eggs were perfectly over easy, and the home fries were heavily salted (perfectly cooked chunks of potato, though). This came with hot tea, coffee and juice.

Overall, the food was exactly what we wanted. I'd come back if I was in the area and wanted the old standby.

I went here with the family last night for their school fundraiser (6th graders help out the staff) and had a nice dinner.  When I first moved to NOVA in the late 90s, Silver Diner wasn't really anything special.  Typical diner food with kitschy jukeboxes at each table.  Better than Denny's or IHOP, but when do I ever venture into a Denny's or IHOP?  Maybe that one time in the past 5 years at 2AM when I really needed to sober up, but I digress.

Silver Diner still offers diner food, but some changes have been made:

-Emphasis on fresh and local food.  I'm all about farmer's markets and co-ops and so on, so big plus for me.
-Emphasis on meat and milk without hormones or antibiotics, another big plus.
-Weekly kids/family nights with arts and crafts and such.  Haven't been to one of these yet, but plan to.
-Local beers and wines.  Now, I didn't order any alcohol since it was a school fundraiser (and didn't see any other parents drinking either).  And I think it might be a little weird having a drink in that setting, but good for them for selling it.
-Good food.  Not great, but better than average for diner food.

Probably the only negative is it's a little pricier (but not significantly) than something like Denny's or IHOP, but it's worth it for the above reasons.

I actually love Silver Diner. As a Californian, it's like a classier Denny's (Sidenote: Where are the Denny's around DC? There are hardly any!)

Silver Diner is great for using local products at each location. The menu is pretty typical diner fare, but I will give special mention to their lovely omelettes.

Also, the shakes are awesome. They are like crack. Best shakes this side of Good Stuff.

Came here a couple times with my husband and brother-in-law for dinner and breakfast.  The service is friendly, fast and efficient.  And can definitely agree that it's probably the best of the few late night places in Springfield.  Shakes are decent, apple pie is pretty good, have yet to try the chocolate cake.

First time we came was with a Living Social Deal, and the second time we bought holiday gift cards - $25 for $20 with a $5 gift certificate, sure, we're gifting ourselves but it makes it well worth it. The price range isn't terrible, though dinner is a little more pricey than breakfast it's in the same range as Delia's.  And I definitely enjoyed breakfast here more than Delia's!  (this could be though because there are more vegetarian and pescatarian options on the menu.

If coming for breakfast come as early as possible, when we left the line was out the door.

Fun for breakfast.  Eggs Benedict was mediocre.  The hollandaise sauce was way too lemony, but the addition of the oven roasted tomatoes was nice.  The bacon was some of the best I've ever had, and I'm not a huge bacon fan.  I was happy to see the yogurt based pomegranate shake, but it was more banana flavored than pomegranate.  I also think it would benefit from the addition of agave syrup instead of sugar.  The cheesy grits were cooked perfectly and topped with grated cheddar.  I personally prefer to have it mixed in with enough cheese to turn the grits orange, but that's just me.  They were slightly under seasoned, so I just added a bit of salt. Voila!

The service was great, our server was fantastic and had a wonderful personality. Nice restaurant atmosphere, much like a Johnny Rockets, only more of a "down home" feel.

This is a good spot!  The service is top notch.  If something is not satisfactory, they will take it off the bill or give you a coupon for a future visit.  It stays open late at night, which is great since there's not a ton of options.

I mostly come here for breakfast.  I love the pancakes, the crab omelet and the crabcake benedict.  The strawberries are nice and fresh and come with a cinnamon yogurt (healthy).

I like the variety here - whether breakfast, lunch or dinner, there are decent options on the menu for people on a low carb / low fat / low cholesterol / vegetarian diet.

    And the milkshakes are Awesome.

Went to Silver Diner for the first time in months today since I needed to get a quick bite of food with my son prior to his lacrosse game. Neither of us wanted fast food, so this was a decent compromise.

Walking in I notice there is now a wine display in the lobby and then a white board announcing their seasonal menu supporting the local agriculture......ooooooooooookkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk.....this is a little surreal but I'm hungry and cranky, so whatevs.

Despite the line we were in we were sat quickly.  Our server was nice. In perusing the menu, I notice that their food has changed significantly towards healthier items. This is good. However, with this shift has come a huge price increase. We ended up getting a burger/fries/peppermint milkshake (for him) and a grilled chicken burger with teriyaki sauce and american cheese/sweet potato fries/ice tea for me. The total for this - $29. Exqueeze me?

Yep. $33 with tip for sub par food that I can cook at home for a fraction of the cost. Hell, you can go to other burger joints in the area and get the same items for cheaper.

I will probably not go back unless someone else is paying for it.

I used to not think of this place as special...but then we went one day, i noticed they TOTALLY changed up their menu for LOCAL and Natural etc etc.....I like to eat healthier so this was a HUGE plus. I always get the low cal GRILLED SALMON. It tastes GREAT and its healthy! YIPPEE!

The best thing though is the service. They really upped it big time since the change. All the waiters are EXTRA nice and makes sure you have a nice experience.  I don't feel this way about many places, I am impressed with the customer service, they are definitely doing something right :-)

    Oh yum!

We decided to pay the Silver Diner another visit - only this time, I am abstaining from meat, dairy and eggs so my perspective was a little different.

Nevertheless, there are still some great options; I went with the mango vegetarian stir fry and it was SUPER good; I would definitely have that meal again.  Hubs had a patty melt again since he loved it last time, and once again, it did not dissapoint!  We also found it interesting (but great) that the sandwiches are served not only with fries, but a vegan slaw (with cranberries) so you know I had to sneak a few bites of that in, too!

Once again, friendly and fast server, too!

Silver Diner Springfield is my favorite! I've been going there for about 10 years and I've never had a bad experience. Plus, over the years they've changed up their menu so much - I'm a big fan. The latest menu has some great changes, more so because they are going "local and farm fresh!"

I went in last night, about 10 minutes before they were going to close - nicest wait staff ever! They still took our order and let my friends and I hang out well past closing.

The "Raging Cajun Scrambler" was right on - with peppers, ham, and jalapenos in the eggs, served with strawberries and silver dollar pancakes (which I was happy to find out I could have as chocolate-chip pancakes!)

It's yum, they're nicer than nice, prompt, clean, AND they have never screwed up my order. Ever. I bet they'd even let me order off the kid's menu if I asked. Top THAT IHOP!

The situation: My friends and I are wrapping up a weekend visit (and a very drunk night) and about to embark on an 8-hour car ride back home. The residual alcohol in their systems is screaming out for grease and so we head to Silver Diner.

I didn't get a good first impression of Silver Diner. In the parking lot I notice cars full of parents unloading their young children and immediately throw out "Hey, how about Dunks instead? We really need to get on the road..." No use.

Inside the place is packed but we are able to get a table. The employees all seem disturbingly happy I notice. Food and drink orders are placed and our waitress is really friendly.

Now when going to a diner I expect some pretty heavy food, but Silver Diner takes it to a completely new level. I could not finish a shared appetizer nor did I make it through 1/4 of my meal. I felt instantly sick. Like I had swallowed the Rock of Gibraltar or something.

That feeling stayed with me until I hit Connecticut!! Which, with traffic, was approximately 9 hours later.

I am not sure I would be brave enough to hit this place again if I am ever in the area.

The only time I come to Springfield is to get something from the mall that I couldn't find at Pentagon City.  Usually I end up at the mall early on a Sat or Sun morning, starving, so I hit up the diner for breakfast.  Their caramel french toast makes me oh so happy (sugar rushes are good for you).  While this certainly isn't my first choice for breakfast, if I was in the area I wouldn't hesitate to hit it up.  It also seems a bit newer and cleaner than other Silver Diner locations I've been to.

The staff is a bit hard to understand at times (unless you know more Spanish than I do).  I think they changed their smoking policy recently because I heard someone in front of me ask about their smoking section and the hostess either said it doesn't open until 9 or it doesn't open until labor day.  You can pick whichever one makes more sense.

Oh, the Silver Diner.  Where to begin?  Perhaps: the beginning.

My reaction to the opening of this location, way back in the waning years of the 20th century, was a sneer.  A fake 50's diner?  Awesome.  The selection of hang-out spots for kids stuck whiling their teenage years in Northern Virginia just wasn't quite bland and depressing enough, and what the area really, truly needed was another hub of faux nostalgia and overcooked burgers.  Just to solidify the ennui.

But then, a curious thing happened: I grew to love the stupid place.

Upon entering, you were faced with a crucial decision: smoking or non.  Should you have opted for non, you would have had an experience not dissimilar from those played out every evening in thousands of Chilis and Ruby Tuesdays across this great nation.  Acceptable food, zany crap on the walls, and prices just this side of too high for what you get.

An answer of "smoking," however, provided entry into the wonderfully weird underbelly of AlexSpringKingsfieldtownandria.  For the most part, yes, this is an area heavy on middle-aged suburban professionals minimally invested in their local community.  But they also share space with artists, college kids, drug addicts, other assorted ne'er-do-wells and that ever-out-of-place demographic: high school students.  A delightful mix of whom could be found on any given evening in the smoking section of the Springfield Silver Diner.

In my years as a teenager and early 20-something, I logged some serious hours in their hyper-plush vinyl booths.  I witnessed drug deals, break-ups, reunions, kids lying unconvincingly to their parents about illegal evening plans, and other such pivotal life moments.  I went drunk.  I went high.  I went after senior prom.  I went when there was nothing else to do on a Friday night except hang out at the Silver Diner, complaining about how there's nothing to do in this suburban wasteland except sitting around complaining at the Silver Diner.

Each time, I had the opportunity to smoke, drink coffee (and eventually beer) and take in the always-entertaining parade of humanity.  I didn't know it then, but I was smack in the middle of the antidote to No.VA malaise: a place where people-- often the same people, night after night-- can gather and feel a part of a community, however weird or rag-tag.  And eat KILLER cheese fries (I mean it.  Still the best I've ever had).

Somehow, in the midst of all the corny corporate diner-themed decor and the same goddamned Monkees song I'd heard FIVE TIMES already that night, we managed to have a blast.  I stop by every time I'm in town, just to make sure I didn't imagine the whole thing.

I've gotten increasingly less fond of Silver Diner as the years go on. I used to love the place. Now, eh.

We were seated quickly, even though the place was relatively busy. Our waitress came right over to take our drink order, but dang if we could understand what she was saying. Besides the fact she was talking pretty low and the music was a bit loud (our jukebox was turned all the way down mind you), she rambled a list of various drinks off to us that sounded like a low hum. I think she said tea, but I could be wrong.

I ordered a cheese omelette. They offered to put bacon in it. I said sure. Suddenly, I no longer had a cheese omelette, but a bacon mass with a little egg and cheese thrown in. Now, I love some good bacon, but a solid mound of bacon is a bit much. Especially when I couldn't really find the cheese portion of my omelette. Sadly, my toast was cold too.

Oh, the guy behind me had a terrible voice and proceeded to ruin all the songs we actually turned the jukebox up to listen to.

The waitress mumbled something about our frequent diner's card. When I told her I had one, she just walked away. o_O
It doesn't really matter since it seems we can't manage to get the 5 visits in to actually get the $5 off coupon.

Oh, well. We'll keep going back. Just because it's there and they have good french toast.
