The Six Pence is okay...  Great bartenders and wait staff.  The food is adequate -- I've never had an amazing, yum, yum, yum meal there, but I like the location, and the food isn't bad.  If you are in town and want an  "okay" meal, with really helpful servers (ask about places to visit, etc.) the Six Pence is fine.  But if you want to hit a real pub with excellent food, I highly recommend McDonoughs (a block away, not fancy or very decorative, but has consistently good food) or Kevin Barry's on River Street (its a bar, but their bangers & mash and irish beef stew are amazing!).  Good luck -- most of the food in Savannah is A+ and the folks are crazy friendly and helpful!  :)
Review Source:We stopped in after hearing that Julia Roberts filmed a scene from Look Who's Talking there. Â The movie wasn't playing, but we settled for the food instead. Â The cozy and small pub/restaurant is welcoming and clean. Â We settled for something small to eat since we were going to have dinner in a couple hours and didn't want to blow it. Â My husband got the soup and sandwich combo, which was a turkey with tomato bisque soup. Â I had a couple sips of his soup and it was so good. Â The loaded banger I had screamed comfort all over it. Â It consisted of two small bratwursts topped with mashed potatoes, bacon, and cheddar cheese. Â Yum-o!
Review Source:We went there for the first time a month ago. Â The place is in a neat tourist area in Savannah and is a tourist restaurant. Â We had to wait a short time for our lunch table but that was OK. Â The beer/ale list is a good one and the wines are good. Â We were going to order Shepherds Pie but the table next to us ordered it and the portion looked pretty small so I opted for roast beef which was good and my companion had bangers and mash which were good. Â Service was negligent.
Review Source:Not a bad place to grab a pint... but next time we'll pass on the food. This pub was on the ghost tour app we were following and we thought we'd give it a go. The outside tables are great, and the bar area is OK as well. The food wasn't bad - it just wasn't stellar. We had their Guinness Beef and Shepherd's Pie. Both were traditionally prepared, kinda bland, but decent. Nothing terribly exciting about the salad, either - iceberg, cucumber, tomato.
Review Source:In a week in Savannah, the only really awful meal we had was at Six Pence. The service and decor were fine, but the food! One of us had bangers & mash, the other had roast beef. Everything came smothered in a paste-like tasteless gravy. The vegetables were overcooked, the beef was dry and cold. It was a bad parody of the worst stereotype of British cooking. Never again!
Review Source:Quaid what are you doing man?.... Don't you know Julia is right outside the window?
Cool Irish Pub on Bull street.... great location to grab a Guinness, and walk through the many squares that line this great street. Thank god for the Savannah open container law, and the location of the six pence pub. Also some cool outside seating to watch the people pass by.
WE went to get out of a cold rainy day in Savannah and could not have been more pleased. WE Sat at the bar rather than waiting for a table which there was a line for but prefer Bar seating, Just more personal service.
We had the Baked Brie Dish as an Appetizer then the Soup Du Jour which was also very good.
The Bartender was amazing, she was sunny on a balmy day and service was great.
Great place to check out just for the Brit Pub feel.
Have fun and enjoy it for what it is.
Service was great. Prices were average. Food quality was pretty lacking. I love bangers and mash...what they served was mashed potatoes with breakfast sausage covered with gravy. The mashed were good but the sausage was sketchy at best. Wife got a Reuben...it was corned beef on rye with mustard. Yep that was it. I'll search for a different pub next time though this one does have charm with lots of potential. They should try using the Fontanini brand Bangers. I've had those and they are the best I've had on the east coast.
Review Source:A lovely British themed pub in Savannah Georgia, just off Chipewa Square (Forrest Gump's Bench scene), and centered in the middle of the Haunted tour district (somebody died everyplace in that city!). Â
They are friendly, the food is good, and they have Guinness, Harp, and Smithwick's on tap! Â Also got to watch the Olympics in London from a British style pub!
Holed up here on a rainy afternoon while it stormed outside ... very cool place to be. Â Check out their collection of Toby Jugs behind the bar, representing almost every British Monarch or important British figure. Â Cute.
My friend and I ate here last week during our stay in Savannah after reading good reviews from a food blog. Â We went for the sole purpose of enjoying a light dinner. Â After seeing the menu, we opted for the soup and 1/2 sandwich combo. Â I ordered potato soup and my friend chose french onion soup. Â The onion soup was topped with provolone cheese with croutons and carmelized onions inside. Â We both had chicken salad sandwiches. Â Our meal was delicious. Â I prefer my chicken salad creamy, no chunks, with or without grapes and pecans, but absolutely no tarragon. Â Six Pence was right on target. Â It actually was among the best chicken salad I have eaten at a restaurant.
We were here on a Tuesday evening. Â It's a great location and only a short walking distance from our hotel. Â There was no wait, the atmosphere was nice and quiet, and our service was excellent. Â We would definitely go back for another visit.
We stumbled upon this place and it's really cool pub both outside and in. It really looks like something you'd find in the UK. I didn't try the food so I can't speak on that but I'm a sucker for British/Irish pubs and as far as atmosphere goes, the place didn't disappoint. The service could've been slightly better but overall it wasn't bad. I'd go back.
Review Source:I came here to grab a quick bite to eat while waiting for my show to start  across the way at The Old Savannah Theatre. Location is great for that purpose but food selection is just ok.
The restaurants theme is British pub fare. I just had soup n salad which was the same thing the locals I was chatting with were having as well. Nice to know that this place is good enough for the locals but as a tourist I'm looking for something a little more special in my dining experience and I didn't find that here.
My wife and I have been visiting Six Pence for years now - every time we make the trip to Tybee or Savannah from Marietta. We first discovered it on an anniversary trip to Savannah and absolutely fell in love with the food, the taps and the atmosphere. In fact, this is the only place in Georgia that we have found that serves Belhaven Scottish Ale on tap (and even with a nitrogen pour!). We highly recommend the smoked salmon appetizer, welsh rarebit the bangers & mash and the stew that's served in the bread bowl. The last few times we have been have been family trips, and now our kids get excited about "that British pub in Savannah", too.
Review Source:the curb appeal of an authentic looking english pub with phone booth beckons you in. Â the food was traditional pub style offering in a quaint, traditional looking interior. Â Seating is close but not cramped. Â A good place to relax and have a quit intimate meal. Â The flounder special was good, but the crab dip was better. Â Only gripe was the chips served with the dip were bottom of the bag bits and pieces. Â I would say ambience over food, but sometimes that's what you are looking for.
Review Source:This was one of my favorite stops in Savannah!! Â We didn't try the food but the bartender service was great and the atmosphere was fun. Â Someone next to us at the bar was eating dinner and it look pretty good!! Â The next time we are in Savannah and it's a little less crazy we will have to come in here for the food!!
Review Source:I found this place tremendously comforting as it was our first stop after checking into the hotel on a cold evening. Â Sometimes it is just really nice to find comfort food and not try to have any more fuss than that. Â Everything here reminded me of exactly how food is in Seaford or Crawley, both in my friends' houses and in the village pubs. Â Its not so fancy as Brighton or London gastropubs, its not catering to anyone but locals. Â There's lots of brown gravy involved, and no one minds.
All of the serving staff were incredibly friendly and chatty with us since the place was not too busy. Â I had the beef and guiness stew and it was delicious. Â The scotch eggs reminded me of late night snacks so often in my apartment. Â It was like a sigh of relief after a stressful drive, and I was incredibly grateful.
I didn't know this place had been in a movie until I came on Yelp. Â I kind of had to laugh though, it seems that movies are a kiss of death for restaurants as far as people coming in with these epic expectations and then being disappointed. Â When Buddakhan was in Sex in the City the reviews on Yelp plummeted as moviegoing fans bemoaned it not being equal to some fantasy they built up in their minds. Â I don't really understand that.
Bottom line: Â The food is comforting, simple home-cooked British fare not unlike what many of my friends' parents' made every night. Â It feels like a small kitchen to den area in a British home, and I felt so relieved to be there that I could have cried. Â The food was delicious and not pretentious (PG tips not Earl Grey) and the staff were kind and welcoming.
We decided to stop in for a couple of drinks and appetizers, while strolling through the city. I remembered this was the pub in the Julia Roberts/Dennis Quaid movie, "Something to Talk About". It's a nice, cozy place. Nothing fancy. The food is nothing great. We tried the crabcake and the baked brie. The crabcake was meh, I make a much better one. The brie was good. The grapes that came with it were perfectly ripe and juicy. They didn't give us enough bread, though. It also should have been crustier or maybe a nice wheat cracker.
They do make a great Cosmo, though.
5 Stars for the atmosphere - one star for the food. Â Really sweet spot you have to pop in while touring Savannah! Â The bartenders and locals are sweet and genuinely fun to be around. Â The bar is super old and cool, all wood with steins with faces of famous Brits (kind of look like they are staring at you....) Note - the mens room is as clean as the women's room so when it gets crowded ladies, feel free to pop over and use it! Â :-D
Review Source:Ordered the Black Velvet ( Guiness + Strongbow). Â I actually didn't realize that the combinations were so extensive after the Black+Tan and the Snakebite. Â Our service was actually really great. Â The prices were a bit steep for baked brie and fruit...though.
Good for the beer, skip the food.
While touring around Savannah with a raging head-ache from the previous night's drinking, we stopped in here to get a Bloody Mary and a beer, the old-hair-of-the-dog remedy.
The Bloody Mary was OK, Zing-Zang and Peppar Absolute, not bad, but nothing special. They have 12 beers and a cider on draft plus a full bar. They also have a very nice menu of British-style eats like Scotch Eggs, Bangers and Mash and Shepard's Pie. We ordered a Shepard's Pie which comes with a little salad, and it was delicious, and perfectly sized to split as we had planned to eat at several more stops on our visit.
By the time we left my headache was gone and we felt like we had found a sweet little treasure tucked away on a side street in Savannah.
We had lunch at The Six Pence Pub last week while spending the weekend in Savannah. Although the space is small it was comfortable and the service was quick.
I ordered a corn beef ruben sandwich that was good. Taking the advice of our server, I ordered a side of potato salad instead of the chips and I was pleased I did. It was creamy and rich and I'd return to the pub just to have another helping.
Our meals were reasonably priced and we were definitely satisfied with our visit.
The service here is great- so attentive and friendly, but not overbearing- so I added on an extra star on what would have been a solid 3-star experience. Â Our server, complete with authentic British accent, had out beverages and food out in a jiffy, while juggling a pretty busy crowd in this small restaurant.
Stumbled in here out of hunger and heat stroke after wandering around the historic streets of Savannah after a failed attempt at going to Lady & Sons (no it was not my decision to check out Paula Deen's restaurant) for lunch. Â Just...needed...food...before...I...faint...
Food is nothing special, with a few very British/Scottish/Irish items like bangers & mash and shepherd's pie. Â I had a plain ole turkey club, and due to the extreme hunger situation, it was delicious. Â It was probably something I could have made at home, but could I have eaten it and then posed for a photo in front of a red English telephone booth? Â No.
Don't believe the hype. It's pretty, yes...pretty busy, yes...pretty pretentious, yes. Six Pence is a hyped up pub that was apparently in some Julia Roberts movie. This place is far too average to wag the bravado around. If you like to sit outside, be prepared to have a carriage tour of 20 onlookers stare at you every 10 minutes. The beer selection wasn't bad...and they had a cider I enjoyed. The waitress gave us the "ugh with an eye-roll" when we said we only wanted to enjoy a couple pints.
Try: Going to another bar after having a cold one (at least you can say you've been there)
Avoid: The waitress with the stick up her leg-rester
Alright, alright so I didn't eat here or anything but wow. These reviews are just lowww. This is my take on the joint.
This is a cool pub to stop by. The service isn't the best, but it's a pub for crying out loud, not a 5 star lounge. If you ask me, that's all you need. Just don't be afraid to sass back because those ladies behind the bar can get mouthy. They aren't there to deal with tourists and it seems like they want to make it known...ha. It's def worth a stop for a brew but there are so many other places in Savannah that DO have great food I would recommend moving on after that.
Meh.
Stopped in to grab a beer late one night. Intimate atmosphere and nice setup. They definitely achieved the cheesy British factor -- red telephone booth and all.
Service could have been better. Our bar tender didn't even know how much a pence was. What?! Ok, well I won't hold that against her, but she did disappear for a good bit and left us wondering when we'd be able to get another drink. During that time of absence, a couple walked in to be sat down and must have stood at the hostess stand for 7 minutes before the one server appeared and ordered them to pick a table. If you're not going to have a hostess on staff, please make it known!
We didn't eat, but the bangers and mash looked good and the beer selection was decent for an "international" pub in Savannah.
This pub has a nice atmosphere.. this place is actually a family favorite when we visit Savannah. That said, I've never been wild about anything I've eaten there other than the dessert. They have very good pecan pie and key lime pie. I've tried their salads, and then last time I had a stuffed fish (forgive me, I can't remember what kind of fish), but nothing was spectacular.
I've always been around lunch time, and have always been seated right away. The service was okay- it was slow but I'm from farther north.. Â that's Savannah for you! :)
Does British down to a tea (spoiler: I'm a Brit).
Awful food, miserable staff and horrendously overpriced. Â Avoid at all costs. Â I could forgive the crap British food if the American items were decent but the collard greens were oversalted and the succotash was dire.
All party members left disappointed and vowing never to return. Â Without a doubt one of the worst meals I've had in the US.
This place wasn't anything to write home about...or should I say, Something to Talk About?
Enough with the corny jokes. Here are the basics. This place was one of the few places open on New Year's Day, so we went here. It has your basic bar/pub atmosphere, minus the smoke. It's crowded, people are watching sports, etc. I had the French Dip sandwich, and my boyfriend had the turkey club. My boyfriend liked his sandwich, and mine was fine, except I felt like for $10.99 they could have given me more meat. I ate mostly a bread sandwich. If it's going to be over ten dollars, I want a sandwich with pieces of meat falling out of it. It's not so complicated.
I have a feeling we should have gone for the French Onion Soup instead, as my boyfriend said he heard people discussing how the place was known for it. Perhaps that's true. Nevertheless, I will probably try another place before I come back to the Six Pence Pub. Life's too short for mediocre.
Two of my friends and I popped in here on a Tuesday night. Â There were only a handful of patrons inside. Â We ordered a few beers at the bar, and then grabbed a table outside. Â Even on a Tuesday night, there were still some good people watching from the sidewalk patio. Â We only stayed for the one drink, so I can't comment on much else. Â I would definitely come back if I was in Savannah again!
PS - I wish I would have known the bar had been in a Julia Robert's movie!!!! Â Doh!
My wife and I took our dog for a long walk the other day. Our intent was to end up having a beer and pizza outside Mellow Mushroom but every outdoor table was taken by chain-smokers and the like. So we kept walking and happened by Six Pence, which had an open table and a menu that sounded tasty.
I was happy to get a Strongbow as well as a place to throw our dog a bowl of water and the server was fantastic. It was nice also to wave hello to the tourists passing by on their carriage tours because hey, we're new in town and not yet sick of them.
Past that, I wasn't terribly thrilled with the place. I was feeling like a burger and have to admit their "pub burger" tasted terribly bland. The meat was especially lacking in taste. I really felt I overpaid on a burger that ranks behind fast food fare.
My wife had nice things to say about her "ploughman's lunch" but I left feeling my hamburger hunger unquenched and my basic hunger still present. Never a happy feeling to have after a $40 dinner.
Six Pence has a fairly nice interior atmosphere (there's outdoors seating too but it's kind of small and right on the sidewalk so this means that people walk right through or around where you're sitting and it's not always the best dining or drinking experience) and they also have some very good Scotches. However, their pub fare seems rather lacking: last time I was here, they didn't even have a ploughman's lunch on the menu which is something no true pub in England would do without. Their dishes tend to run towards the American idea of pub grub: burgers and sandwiches and salads with grilled chicken in them.
Nothing on the food menu that I've tried has ever been remarkable, but again, the selection of Scotch is impressive enough (though even that could be better really . . . I don't want to get some goodly gent's hopes up to only have him come to Six Pence and feel they lack the assortment of fine Scotch he craves). Molly's pub over near City Market may or may not have more of a selection of good Scotch: you'll just need to investigate.
Why come to Six Pence then? Because it does feel like a neighborhood bar and while it gets its share of tourists for sure, it's a more mature hang-out and fewer SCAD kids so it's not as loud as some bars. . . therefore, if you're on a date or getting a drink with a business associate and want something low-key and intimate, this could be a good bet. Otherwise, to me, it feels boring and I'd rather be at Pinkie Master's with its assortment of SCADlings and locals and cheap drinks.
Sweet little place to grab a bloody Mary on my first day in town. The bartender was a little fakey sweet which I'm not crazy about but I'm from DC so maybe I'm just not used to it and need to relax? Yeah. Probably.
We wanted to get an appetizer but the selection was oddly small and nearly resoundingly unappetizing. I was taken in with the collection of Queen Elizabeth II knickknacks....interesting joint, wouldn't cry to go back but I'd go.
