I've been going here for several years and my boyfriend and I generally find the healthy options agreeable. I definitely like the atmosphere of this pub because it reminds me of the places I've been to in Boston. The service is sort of spotty; it can be quick one day and slow the next. The overall feel of the place is laid back and unhurried, but that can become an issue if you show up ravenous.
The menu hasn't changed in the past 5 or so years, which can become boring if you're a neighborhood regular. I really wish they would come up with some better "hot" options instead of just soup, salad, and sandwiches. Some sort of pasta dish or expanding their selection of paninis would be a nice compliment to their existing offerings. Boyfriend still enjoys the place, but I kind of grumble whenever he wants to go because I've become so bored of their food. Â I used to describe this place to my friends as "Like Panera, but with a full liquor bar" But even Panera has expanded into pasta and has better soup options than those that you might find at a nursing home. Split pea? Butter bean? C'mon guys....show us something more appetizing and creative!
My girlfriend and I were in the neighborhood so we stopped by Stone Soup Cafe for a late lunch. We were happy to have an air conditioned respite from the heat more than anything. Our service was good, but I just don't love this restaurant. I have been there several times but it had been years. I remembered that I didn't love it before, but decided it had been a long time and the place is still there (so obviously they must do an OK business), so I thought to give it another chance. However, my Greek salad just wasn't that great. It was fine, but nothing special. I have had much better Greek salads at many other St. Pete restaurants. So, I think it will be while before I give Stone Soup Cafe another shot.
Review Source:The awesomely late hours were what attracted us to Stone Soup - serving the full menu until MIDNIGHT!!! We live in Uptown/4th Street area and NOTHING tasty and healthy is open past 9pm. When you work later, it's tough to get a non-fast food meal on a weeknight after that witching hour. We ended up at Stone Soup for the first time last night after a rather frustrating post-Rays game search for food. Even the Chinese places were closed at 10:15pm. I remembered I had seen Stone Soup online and thought it had said they were open late. The place is kind of in a weird area in a strange building but you'd never know it on the inside. It's got an Irish pub kind of feel - but it's very clean and nicely done. We sat at the bar - the bartender was really funny and friendly. I ordered the cook's salad and my boyfriend ordered the roast beef sandwich. The salad was giant and super super fresh. It came with ham and turkey and the meat was to die for - tasty deli meats. And the roast beef... it was crazy good. Delicious roast beef with an awesome homemade onion roll (take that, Arby's) warm with cheddar, onions and some yummy horsey sauce that was just a little sweet. Oh man, now I want one, even though it's not even 10AM. We got a massive, satisfying and healthy meal for $20, including two soft drinks. I can't wait to go back and try another huge salad... or maybe a sandwich. We will be back, probably on a weeknight after 10pm.
Review Source:I love this place; I remember visiting this St. Pete staple long before I moved to Florida in '96. They have recently remodeled the inside and the look is classy and comfortable. I have never had a bad meal here and the staff is always helpful, quick, and friendly. Â The combos are very reasonable ($7 neighborhood) and you get a lot of food. Â The soups are always tasty. Â My favorite sandwiches are the Super Cheese, the Veggie, and Kristy's Special. Â The salads are huge and come with a muffin.
Review Source:We really liked this place. We were getting our tires replaced up the road and walked down to grab some lunch and waste some time. We both ordered the Antipasta Salad without the muffin (their salads all come with a muffin) and a pint of beer. The salad was huge and packed with meat! We both really enjoyed the taste as well. The ham was shaved and piled on in huge chunks (which I loved...but Hubby wished it was more chopped and spread throughout the salad). We were starving since we hadn't ate all day AND we had walked to the restaurant. Despite that, we couldn't finish our salads. You could easily split a salad between two people. When our bill came I was happy to see the price. For a little over $20 (pre-tip) we had an amazing meal. We will be back for another visit soon.
Review Source:Great little spot to grab lunch if you're in the area. Is it a pub? Is it a cafe? Not sure but the prices are low and service is great/
I ordered the split pea soup, which was excellent. I also had the Turkey Pecan salad which was HUGE. I barely put a dent on it. I hate when an entree salad is like 75% lettuce, and I end up eating all of the good bits (meat, cheese, nuts, veggies) out of it and having a bunch of stupid lettuce left. But, the good bits to lettuce ratio in the Turkey Pecan salad is reversed.
What a nice surprise!! Was in the St Pete area- with no idea what to do for lunch. Â Came across this via my yelp app, and so glad we checked it out. Â
Great soups, salads and sandwiches! It is a sit down restaurant (you get a server) but has a very casual feel to it. Â Service was great and food came out quick.
Prices are fantastic for what you get- $6.95 for a soup & salad combo. Â Most of the elaborate salads are under $7- and they are huge! Â Also all meals come with a muffin- which is a nice touch. Everything we had was delicious.
If you're not looking for it- you'll probably drive right by it, as it's in a very small strip mall with random offices. Â But, definitely worth checking out!
First things first, if there is a British flag flying outside then someone might think there is some type of English/Scottish/Welsh/Irish(Northern)/Manx Pub behind the doors, guess I got that wrong :-)
There was a vast dining room, compared to the amount of people sitting at the tables and a fairly busy bar. So onto the name of the restaurant and the story of the young girl who traveled with a large empty cooking pot. You would think this signature dish would kick holy roman booty but it failed. It didn't even make it on the tasty peasant style soup scale of which I've sampled many. So I doubt I'll ever go back because I'd have to drive there and that defeats the busy bar reason for visiting. Not trying to be slanderous just my opinion ...
Finally, a local place with decent salads! I'm tired of crappy salads with iceberg and nothing exciting. Anyway. I'm hooked on the turkey pear one. There's a pile of fresh shaved deli turkey, tons of walnuts, cubed pears, dried cherries... And it comes with a homemade muffin. You never know what you're going to get until it's in front of you. I've had banana nut ones and a cinnamon-spice crumb ones usually. All for less than $8. I don't know how they do it, but I'm happy they can because it's a perfect location for me to swing by and call in ahead for take out. Their sandwiches are huge too. It's a really good value and every time I'm here it tastes fresh. Also, the carrot cake a nice occasional indulgence.
Review Source:Down the road from where I live.
Cool little bar with HUGE sandwiches. Seriously one of the largest turkey club sandwiches I've ever seen. Tons of crispy bacon, fresh veggies, a MOUND of turkey, and the toasted rye pumpernickel swirl bread was just amazing. A great sandwich. The potato salad side was okay. My company got similarly fantastic sandwiches but ordered the pasta salad side. I had a try and it was very tasty; much better than the potato salad.
Great place to go for a sandwich and a beer. Large microbrew selection.
Too long of a wait for an expensive sandwich. The tea tasted sour. To top it off, the order was wrong. I asked for the manager and she came out with an attitude. Made me feel like I was bothering her. The bar area was very obnoxious. No satisfaction either. I don't recommend. Kind of a dirty place too.
Review Source:Cobb Salad special and Wilco playing?
I don't think  I've ever written and immediate, right off-the-cuff yelp review before, but did not want to let this one slip away from me (I have so many half-done ones or yet-to-even-start ones).  I just got back to the office after an AWESOME lunch at Stone Soup Kitchen in St. Pete.  I had seen their ads in the Creative Loafing and TBT and had been meaning to check  it out.  It is in an incredibly non-descript strip mall on 16th St. N.  I'm pretty sure I never would have just happened upon it...I think there's a nail shop and an insurance agency in the same strip mall (much like every other strip mall in the area).  I had lunch in the bar area - probably about a 20 seat bar with six or seven small table tops.  Three or four televisions, showing ESPN or news, though Barbara, the server/barkeep EXTRODINAIRE was happy to hand over the controls to anyone at the bar.  To tell you the truth, I didn't even peek into the dining room, but it looked cute at a glance.  The pace in there, at 11:30am on a Thursday was HUSTLE-TO-THE-BUSTLE.  Like, whoa.  But the staff, Barbara especially, had it covered.  Barbara was taking/serving phone orders (probably at least 10 in the 45 minutes or so I was there), and serving the bar and the table tops like a pro.
The menu is mostly soup, salads and sandwiches but a MASSIVE beer selection, bottled and draught. Â The Thursday special is Cobb Salad - interestingly, I am on a quest for the perfect Cobb Salad in the Tampa Bay area, so I barely glanced at the rest of the menu, though I'll be back for a sandwich at some point. Â The Cobb Salad was gigantic and incredibly fresh. Â Chopped romaine topped with chopped tomato, blue cheese, hard boiled egg, turkey and bacon. Â I do love to have some avocado in my Cobb, but this was spectacular without it, though when I go again, I will probably add avocado. Â Huge, huge, HUGE! I swear, I was eating it for about half an hour and it didn't even look like I had started yet. Â I have half of it in the office fridge right now, though I doubt it will last until the end of the day. Â The salads also come with a super cute little fresh muffin - I think it was banana nut something or other maybe? Also delish, though I barely pecked at it after being defeated by the Cobb. Â Oh, and my desert of choice was the rest of my Stella.
I honestly cannot wait to go back - it might be as soon as tomorrow with coworkers.
Highly recommended.
*ETA* another older review mentions only beer and wine - they are a full bar now.
Let me preface this review by saying that the Panini we had on a previous visit was very good, with a healthy portion and great flavor. However, on our second visit, for "Monday Dollar Taco Night", I had a sour taste in my mouth which needs to be reflected in the overall rating of this place.
First, my expectations for "dollar tacos" were not high...I was expecting something about the size of a Taco Bell taco with better quality ingredients. Turns out the reality was a horror straight out of the 'Official cheapskate restaurant-owner's handbook'.
I ordered four tacos, as that should at least satisfy the base hunger of most folks. (I also ordered some of the 2 dollar Coronas...a good enough deal). The items I received were, hands down, the chintziest, meager little snack size morsels ever to bear the name of 'Taco'. For starters, the base meat and cheese layer which was dropped into the base of the taco was not even the width of my finger - bad enough and laughingly sparse - but the accompanying tomato and lettuce sides for the four tacos were equally tiny. If I would have split the alloted tomato chunks amongst my four tacos evenly, I would have had about 3 mini-chunklets of tomato per taco, and a barely-there embarrassing coating of lettuce fragments to place on top of the tomato's shame...These things were not even worth the dollar I paid for them! They made Taco bell 78-cent tacos look like a huge value!
To make things better, I ordered some sour cream and salsa to zest them up. Even though that cost extra, it was a must to get these things up to edibility. They brought a side of each, so things were looking better!
Now we come to paying the bill, and the circus therein. First, they charged us for 4 added tacos we never purchased, so after wrangling and confirming with the server - the bill was reduced. Then I notice they had charged me for not ONE side of sour cream and ONE side of salsa - but FOUR OF EACH. The justification being that I had four tacos, so I should have to pay for four sides of each, since the portions were big enough. I now understand what dollar taco night obviously means to them - a chance to nickel and dime the customer who happens to go that route!
Instead of just adjusting the bill, they fought it. I then insisted that if I was going to pay the bill - Â I be given my remaining 3 sides of each condiment to take home, since the sides I received were standard issue side orders one would get at any restaurant. I also told them I'd be happy to speak to the manager about it if there was a question (I was not being an a--hole, just matter of fact). They then grudgingly adjusted the bill and sent me on my way.
I don't like being treated like some third-class customer just because I am buying dollar-menu items. I felt taken advantage of and did not appreciate the added billing and overcharging for sides to gin up the bill. I also do not appreciate a place offering such sub-par fare...YES they were only a dollar, but even so, provide an actual TACO for that price and make it an honest dollar taco.
Yes, the paninis are good and in general this place has value. But the experience around 'dollar taco night' felt like it revealed a pallid, distasteful underbelly to the place which I wish I'd never seen...
My two star "Meh, I've had better" review is a perfect description of my feeling for Stone Soup. A good restaurant should be good, no matter what you order...
The feature here is the bar. No questions. Plus there's two extra dining rooms that have always seemed empty during my visit--but this place begs you to mingle with other patrons. I guess those extra dining rooms are for the lonely, party poopers (like I was). The bar is where the action's at.
The menu is dominated by the beer selection. (I'm not a beer nerd--but the blueberry beer was an attractive and great choice for this beer newbie). The servers are all very friendly and eager to please. If alcohol is not your thing (then why are you even in there??) then your food choices are limited to  sandwiches, soups, or salads... but they make the best out of those simple choices! I'm a fan-- each sandwich tastes homemade with a slight twist to make it taste better than other sister sandwiches in sadder environments. Me like!
People of all ages seem to haunt the place... so why does everyone seem to stare at the two Asians walking in? They can stare more, I'm definitely returning. This place can slowly turn me into a beer nerd.
We always heard good thing sabout this place but never stopped by untilt hey remodeled and added the bar area. They have a decent salad & sandiwch menu, you can even create your own sandwich from their list of ingredients. Nice fresh toppings too. They have a great beer selection including Chimay and Guiness. Sandwiches were $5.95, fancier ones at $1 more. I forget what the beer prices were and lost my receipt. They do deliver with a $15 minium, and they do trays if you need to feed a crowd.
Review Source:Had read about this place awhile ago on Yelp and bookmarked it but didn't get around to trying it out until tonight.
This was exactly what my roommate and I were looking for tonight...some simple food and good beer.
I got a Bacon, Cheddar, and Turkey Panini and a Pilsner Urquell and both were amazing. Â The panini was huge! Large over-sized bread slices and a good, heaping portion of thinly sliced turkey...the flavor had no where to hide (Seinfeld reference).
The beer selection both draft and bottles were top-notch...ton's of imports. Â Their menu is filled with sandwiches, soups, bakery items, and desserts. Â
The atmosphere was perfect. Â I didn't know what to expect from a semi-strip mall type location but the bar itself was well crafted and a pleasure to sit at. Â Some LCD TV's were in easy view to watch while eating or conversing over a pint.
The bartender/waitress we had was really nice and funny.
We'll definitely be going back. Â This will be a new go-to spot for us.
Check it out!

What a wonderful surprise to find in my own little neighborhood! Â Started out as a small, healthy-minded restaurant, then recently (2009) expanded to include a VERY nice pub element (craft beers/wine/full liquor bar). Â They really spent the time and energy to do the pub piece right. Â All of my beer snob friends have been impressed by the draft and bottle selection. Â And they even have 3 varieties (1 draft, 2 bottle) of my personal favorite, hard cider! All in all, a great pub with a nice, relaxed atmosphere. Â Check it out!
