BEST PRICE, QUALITY, SERVICE, AND QUANTITY!
Not only some the best sushi I've had, but the most efficient pricing. This place is great all around. For full value get the All You Can Eat special for $25 during lunch. It is well worth it with the quick service, large quantity, and great quality sushi you receive.
A favorite of mine is the baked Philadelphia role, as well as tuna nigiri. The nigiri is surprisingly large and fresh, and on top of that it is bottomless if you order AYCE.
If you are in the Palo Alto area and you are a sushi enthusiast you MUST come to Sushi 88.
I love this place. We came in last night as a family. The place was packed but we were seated in 10 minutes. Our server was Jessica. She was friendly and knew the menu. Also I ordered the wrong thing and she quickly bought out the one I wanted. Also the owner Peter came to to say Hello. He is so great and treats us like family. He gave us an appetizer - spicy and garlic edamame. It was great. We ordered a couple of Bento Boxes and a Ramen. The Tempura is the best on the planet. I also really like the Tempura Roll and is so fresh. This is great family place and the people are so friendly with great food.
Review Source:Any sushi roll will taste good if you deep fry it and slather it in sauce. I went here for the sushi buffet but wow $22/lunch and $27/dinner. No thanks. I wish they made a poor man's all you can eat menu with a limited number of rolls for less than 20. Anyway, we ended up ordering the crispy cobra or something (tempura shrimp+CA roll deep fried), mussels (3 New Zealand mussels with the generic thick hollandaise-like sauce and terriyaki sauce on top), and my guy got a bento box (chicken terriyaki and tonkatsu).
The roll was ok, like I said you can't really taste any fresh seafood from fried food so they could toss anything in there. The mussels were what you expect, not amazing but not terrible either. Not worth $6. The bento box I guess is the best deal you can get. Big portions. The tonkatsu was too peppery.
This restaurant is not for sushi purists. But if you're hungry for something sushi-esque then I suppose you could come here.
I feel like each time I come for all-you-can-eat sushi here, the quality gets worse and worse. Was just here last Sunday, and here are the new things I hate about this place:
- more rice in everything. gah.
- fish are sliced thinner for the nigiri. gah.
- fish are less fresh. ugh.
- no ice cream to finish the meal. argh.
- no frequent eater card reward thing. come on!
Anyway, if I'm in the mood for this again, I'll drive the extra mile to Sushi 85 where the above isn't true (except for maybe the rice thing, but even then, it's not as blatant as here).
This sushi restaurant is AMAZING. My friend used to live in Mountain View and she selected this spot. I looked it up on my yelp account and noticed that it was open. This was at 2:30 pm on Friday. I thought it was an error because the majority of sushi restaurants close from 2:30pm - 5pm and open again at 5 or 5:30pm. So I called and the guy on the phone said " we are open all day on Fridays". This is the only restaurant that I know of that does that. Niji Sushi on W Dana St. in Mountain View is another that is open from 11am - 10pm all day every day.
When we entered we were greater by our waitress and chef. There wasn't a lot of people so our waitress sat us immediately. My friend asked me to order for her because she is not familiar with the sushi menu. For her I order a chicken teriyaki Bento with California roll and calamari. I was surprised that they had calamari for for the bento. I've never seen that before. For myself I ordered the nigir combination. I also ordered the lion King for her to try out.
After placing our order we asked for hot tea and water. Our waitress cane back with our drinks she also brought a baby blue cold bottle of water for us to refill our water. The bottle itself was very nice looking. Also a good idea because you don't need to ask for more water when you run low.
The teriyaki chicken bento came with the usual salad, cali rolls and rice. It was fully loaded with chicken and calamari. The calamari had a perfect crunch to every bite.
The lion king roll was on a white platter which gives it a good presentation. It has 8 pieces instead 6. It wasn't overly soggy like everyone's accustomed to. I was able to grab each piece with the chopsticks without having it crumble. Very good.
The Nigir combination was fresh and very tasty. Also served on a white platter. The use of white platters makes Sushi more elegant.
Our waitress was very attentive. We didn't have to ask her for anything as soon as we had a empty plate she picked it up.
They also have a large selection on their menu. It's a bit pricey but worth it.
I recommend this restaurant to anyone that loves sushi.
Not quite sure why this place would get anything less than a 4 star rating. The place is pretty decent for decor, but the food is actually pretty good. The Shoyu flavored Ramen is extremely good and is the best I've tasted out of 4 places tried. Service is so-so, the don't check up on you, but they do get what you request for. You just have to flag them down (reasoning for -1 star).
Review Source:I came here for the buffet dinner. It was pretty crowded so the waitress said we could only order 2 dishes at a time instead of the usual 3. That was fine except it took about half an hour for even an appetizer to arrive. We stayed for about 2 hours and I think I was able to order about 3 rolls (which seems like an ok amount, except the rolls are a lot smaller than usual and mostly rice). Unless you have no other plans for the night and a few hours to spare for dinner, the all you can eat sushi is not worth it.
Review Source:I've been here numerous times by now. The food is tasty and service is decent. My favorite is ramen + short ribs ($3 side dish). I've also tried the All You Can Eat Sushi, but to be honest, it's better to try this with a large group, so each person can try a lot of different types.
Definitely will keep coming back!!
Went here with my wife. Got 2 unlimited sushi orders. Place had maybe 10 other people in it on a Thursday night. They limit how many rolls you can have on your table which is fine but it took them 20-25 minutes to make a roll each time we ordered. We were there almost 2 hours to eat. 15-20 min for our first 3 rolls, then we ordered 3 more which took another 20-25 minutes then another 3 for another 20-25 minutes.
The service makes me sick and the rolls are pretty small. I dont know what other people thing but should a dragon roll really only have 6 pcs? I thought they have 8-10 pcs. Soft shell crab has 4 which makes sense i guess as I have seen 4-6 depending on size.
Long story short, the service is terrible, every roll takes way to long to make and serve and to top it off we had to call the waiter for each order because no one checked it with us for drink refills. the only time we saw the waiter come to us without asking was to give us the bill. 10 people in the whole place and they are to busy?
I will not return and no one should come here unless you want spend more time waiting for your food than actually eating it.
Alex is a boss of bosses when it comes to sushi. The best way to go is to let him send you the freshest fish your way in his own creative and tasty fashion. He's always learning new techniques & it won't be long until he is the grand master around these parts. Plus they have a great beer & sake selection. Cheers!!
Review Source:This place is worth your money. My best friend took me here for lunch and I got to say, for the price of what we are eating, this is pretty cheap because most Japanese restaurant cost a little bit more. I won't say they are really fresh, but it was decent and how can you be mad when it is a all-you-can-eat menu? Overall, I would give them a 4 stars because sometimes the waiter/waitress can be really slow to approach us.
Review Source:I go out to sushi... a lot. I go once a week, usually every Tuesday, and I try to find a new place each time. However, there are places that I go to more often and this is one of them. The fish is just ridiculously good here, it's as simple as that. They have a ton ton ton of different rolls, and with all-you-can-eat menu, you can try everything! However, I enjoy ordering lots of nigiri. All-you-can-eat + nigiri = heaven.
I have had the ramen once, and it was ok.
The service is fast, which makes the all-you-can-eat experience even more enjoyable. Also, you should pay in cash because they will hook you up 5% off or free ice cream!
The sushi deal is awesome but they are STICKLERS if you eat even one piece of someone's "all you can eat" and you didn't order it. I purchased my own entree and was disappointed that they were so angry about me trying my friend's sushi. I couldn't eat "all you can eat" but like to share food with friends. Bummer, but I still think it's worth the trip if you're craving sushi.
Review Source:I couldn't resist the Amazon Deal ($15 for $30 worth of food), so had to return to Sushi 88 & Ramen for another dinner. We came in on a Thursday night around 8pm, and the restaurant was only half full so we were seated right away. We ordered:
-House Salad (Spring Mix w/Ginger-Sesame Dressing, $1.50, http://www.yelp.com/biz_…): Ugh, I forgot their dressing is a ginger sesame dressing, and it was too tangy. Skip!
-Salmon Deluxe Roll (Spicy Salmon & Cucumber w/Fresh Salmon & Avocado
on Top, $11.25, http://www.yelp.com/biz_…): I still didn't like the cucumber in this roll- serves me right for not checking if I had reviewed this restaurant already. The salmon was still good though.
-Stanford Roll (Inside: Tempura Shrimp, Spicy Tuna, Yamagobo. Outside: Salmon, Spicy Tuna, Tobiko, Pine Nuts, $16.95, http://www.yelp.com/biz_…): We got this without the yamagobo (pickled burdock), and it was pretty good! However, the pine nuts didn't go with the rest of the roll and I ate mine separately. Although I enjoyed it, I'm not sure I'd pay $16.95 for this again.
-Ikura/Salmon Roe Nigiri (2 pieces, $4.50, http://www.yelp.com/biz_…): Largest ikura nigiri I've ever seen! Unfortunately, it was very sloppily made and the ikura were starting to leak out from the top. It tasted fine, but not super fresh.
-Tonkatsu Ramen ($9.95, http://www.yelp.com/biz_…): Eh, very lackluster. I knew I shouldn't order the ramen, but just had to try it since it's part of the restuarant name. The broth was barely hot and bland, and the noodles were too soft. They gave you a good amount of pork and other ingredients, but I don't recommend ordering this dish.
The food was ok, but our waitress was very strange, and would do things like toss the menus on the table from a foot away instead of walking all the way to the table and placing it down gently. She also sat another couple at the table right next to us even though there were plenty of other tables available, so we had to listen to their conversation (and vice versa) for the rest of the meal. The restaurant also seemed understaffed, and it would take a few minutes before we could flag down a server if we needed anything. If you dine here, I would still recommend going for the all you can eat option if you like rolls and can eat 1-2 rolls. Parking is easy in this lot, so you don't have to worry about that.
On a Sunday evening, my boys and I were craving some Japanese food.
We came in around 5pm and were seated promptly.
I'd never been here before but the BF gets lunch with his coworkers here a few times a month. He loves the portobello rolls.
I wasn't very hungry so I just ordered miso soup and edamame. Both were fine, not the best I've had, but certainly not the worst.
The brother got salmon rolls (I forgot what they were called) and he said they were very yummy.
I would definitely go back.
3.5 stars.
This has been our all-you-can-eat sushi place for years. The portions are decent size so you don't feel like they're trying to rip you off by filling you with rice. They also have been very gracious when there were a piece or two we weren't able to finish.
It's expensive, but you can eat your moneys worth easily - check it out
i luv this place. Â The 88 roll is so delish! Â It has so much fresh fish and is a large portion to were you only need to order one roll. The ocean roll is also very good with alot of fresh fish. Â
They have all you can eat and the quality is the same as there normal rolls, very good, most people go for this. Â
We frequent this place because it is the most for your dollar. Â When it is slow the service is great, when it is crowded there is not extra staff so it is a little longer than normal.
They have both eat-in and call-in. Â Both are great. Â Well worth it, never had a bad experience. Â Will go back!
Came here for a takeout. I ordered maki roll, rock n roll and spicy salmon roll... but total was about $15 including tax. All the rolls had way too much rice and not enough fish. Flavor wise, it's not a far departure from supermarket sushi. It's not that good. Price wise, comparable to other sushi places nearby but you certainly can get better quality sushi with the same price elsewhere.
I think if you want to eat sushi here, you will probably be better off ordering their all you can eat ($26/person for dinner). But you probably will end up eating lots of rice and not a lot of fish.
Fish here does not taste fresh, but frozen. Portion sizes are big, but prices aren't cheap either though they always do have http://restaurant.com gift certificates available. Probably not coming back.
Review Source:I came here with friends for the AYCE twice. Both times were fun, though as with most AYCE experiences, our ambition did not match our ability. They do charge extra if you can't finish what you ordered, so be careful!
I really enjoyed their oven baked rolls. A lot of the rolls are variations of the California Roll, so do look at the ingredients. Don't do it like we did, and order based on coolness of name.
I honestly have no idea what constitutes good sushi. I enjoyed the food I put in my mouth. Whether this place is authentic or not, I don't know, so please take what I say with many grains of salt.
It's a bit pricy based on the quality of their food. Ramen is not bad, but nothing very special about it. Also, ordered bento box with teriyaki beef and gyoza. The beef was overcooked, so it became a little chewy. The gyoza was not good at all, taste very bland inside. I think you can get a better gyoza just going to costco and buy any of the frozen options. The sushi rolls are decent, but I can definitely get a better sushi rolls based on the price that they charged. Their white rice actually taste pretty good, have good texture :-)
Review Source:Yikes. I kind of knew what to expect. Coming to Sushi 88 & Ramen, I knew that I was going to have to put my stomach to the test, and end up coming out of here feeling like death. It could have been a great gorging experience, but instead, it was just kind of bad, and I don't think that I'd come back again.
Sushi 88 & Ramen is located in the same shopping center as Kohl's so it's not too hard to find. I actually thought that this place would be much larger than it actually was, but there wasn't a wait, so that's obviously not much of a problem. We came here for dinner, and decided to go with the AYCE instead of the regular menu. Price-wise, AYCE is roughly $25 per person, so be prepared to eat.
During lunch hours, you have two different selections for AYCE. The cheaper option, roughly $5 less, lets you order from one side of the menu, while the "premium" option, gives you full reign over both sides of the menu. I'd personally go with the more expensive option since you actually get rolls and nigiri. As far as the food goes, there only really can be one word that sums this place up: underwhelming. During my time here, I ended up trying out 12 different rolls/nigiri. From the rainbow roll, to tako, and all the way to the carne asada roll, they all honestly tasted the same. All the rolls were glazed with the same sauce, and the only difference with the carne asada roll was that there was Tapatio on top.
I mean, after eating 3 rolls, you pretty much know that it's going to be more and more of the same thing. For a $25 dinner, I could go to a normal Japanese restaurant and eat something decent, instead of coming here and feeling like I just ate 3lbs of the same thing. Service-wise, they're decently fast with getting your order out. Just use a marker and check which items you want to order, and in a matter of 5-10 minutes, all your rolls are brought to your table. Sushi 88 & Ramen also does serve ramen here. Don't think that it's going to be something like Orenchi, because it's more on the side of Top Ramen. The broth is incredibly bland, and the noodles are packaged. Save yourself $10 if you're coming here specifically for ramen.
I always have a love/hate relationship with buffets. It always seems like a challenge to me, and I have to eat as much as I can. At places like the Wynn buffet, I walk out feeling like a champion who just got his money's worth. At Sushi 88 & Ramen, I just feel like I ate 40 pieces of the same roll.
ACE! I've been recommending this place to everyone who asks me for good sushi. This is my first stop for an ACE sushi lunch/dinner.
The waitress was friendly, and was surprised to how much my boyfriend and I ate. I forgot what we ordered exactly, but they were all amazing. The service was a little bit slow, considering that it was not rush hour and there was barely anyone in the store. But the rolls made up for it; we were bloated when we finished.
I'm definitely coming back here to fulfill my sushi craving!
This is my other go to sushi spot for lunch, but it is not as close. I like their sushi rolls and I especially like their all-you-can-eat lunch menu. I usually come here with a group of coworkers or friends for that though. We always eat entirely too much and say we will never do that again...until we do a few months later.
My favorite is the spider roll, but they have a lot of other good choices. While I really like this place, I give them a 3 because service can be ridiculously slow. Friendly service, but slow. It's even more frustrating when you are trying to get out of here quickly during your lunch hour and the place isn't even packed.
If you're not doing the all-you-can-eat, It's a good idea to actually just call in your order and pick it up if you're coming here for lunch.
It's decent sushi, but I think you can get the same quality or better for the same price at Fuki Sushi.
The ramen combo is definitely a worthwhile buy, though. Highly recommend this.
If you're with a group of friends, you can try out the all you can eat sushi. It's tasty, but you may regret eating too much afterward.
Friendly service and nice sushi chefs always welcome any guest who enters Sushi88. It's a place where you get complimentary hot mixed loose-leaf green tea served right away.
Boyfriend has this thing where we always do appetizers here because he likes them. So far, we've done two different ones. Gyoza appetizer with a spicy soy-teriyaki dip was really good. Crispy on the outside and juicy meat on the inside. Â Their calamari with soy paste dip was even better, though. The meat was fresh and the frying process was great, because they breaded the calamari. I used said dips as the complement to my sushi later :) I don't use wasabi with soy sauce, so I prefer to use seasoned / flavorful appetizer dips for my sushi (Hint: Protip)
We have tried:
- 88 roll: pine nuts yum. Only sushi place I know that has sprouts and pine nuts.
- Lion king (California roll with salmon): warm baked roll. Savory and rich.
- Seven star (California roll with unagi and fish eggs): simple but good.
- Spider dragon & Spider man: can't go wrong with Tempura Shrimp rolls :)
- Sex on the Mountain: Yum, scallops, but this roll is smaller than the others :(
- Nigiri: I recommend Jellyfish and Scallops.
- Handrolls: I have only tried the salmon skin because obviously SS is the yummiest.
When you leave, they've got complimentary Dum-Dum pops. This establishment has always been a pleasure to visit. It's a great stop if you're in the same area for Target / Trader Joes / Kohls.
Sushi 88 & Ramen is a great place to go for some quick sushi. It's in a convenient location, and the price is right. I wouldn't call the Carne Asada roll authentic (I haven't tried it yet ... I don't have the guts), so I have to take off 1 star.
Overall the food quality is pretty good though, and the service level is good as well.
It took us a long time to get here... The neon lights on the outside advertising 'all you can eat' makes it look like something it's very much not. Â It became kind of a joke between me and my fiance, to go to the all you can eat sushi place with the neon lights...
But it's a really nice place! Â The all-you-can-eat is actually a bit expensive ($25 per person) but they have a huge range of rolls, entrees, salads, and chirashi that you can get separately. Â And the rolls are amazing! Â The spiderman roll is especially phenomenal, and the UFO roll will leave you in total disbelief.
They're fast, and the range of things on the menu makes it as good if not better than the other sushi places in the area. Â Can't wait to go back!
Sushi 88 & Ramen has a huge menu - it's almost overwhelming, which is reason enough to take off 1 star.
However, the food quality seems to be good. I don't ever eat raw fish, so I can't vouch for those who like to eat the "real" stuff ;) I always stick to my favorites: unagi, California roll, spider roll, and usually something new every time to finish off the meal.
The servers are very nice and friendly, which is always reason to come back.
However, I have to take off one more star because the prices are very high for what their product is. It's not like this sushi is made by the "samurai of sushi" in Japan, so I'm not sure their quality and portions warrant the high cost.
Last time I came here I ordered ramen, which was .. Meh.. Usually costs: 9.75
Today, I ordered a variety of dishes to try different things.
1. Seaweed salad $3.95: it was edible. The taste was a little off, like a bit of Chinese medicine. Wouldn't order again.
2. Chicken Karage $5.95: this was good. Crispy on the outside, moist on the inside
3. Lion queen roll $13.25: baked roll - spicy tuna roll with salmon on top. The salmon was pretty good, but the spicy tuna was really dry. Wouldn't order again.
Service was really good though! I added an extra star for her . Last time I came it was awful, but the waitress was really nice and attentive today. I came 9/16 at around 4:30PM.
Overall, meh ... I wouldn't recommend coming here unless you are in a rush. Otherwise I would send you to downtown mountain view !
Is this the same thing as Sushi 85 on Grant? No, says the owner. Our ingredients are fresher and better quality. We also have a bigger menu.
But to me, the two restaurants are interchangeable (they even have virtually the same name...off by one digit?). Probably similar owners if not the same. I came here with a groupon of $12 for $25 worth of food on anything off the menu. We ordered the lion king roll and an all you can eat order of sushi. The sushi itself was decent, not bad quality for all you can eat at $17... really a great deal. I'd come here for that alone if all you can eat buffets were my thing. We tried the crispy roll, spider roll, cucumber roll, scallop hand roll, spicy tuna, caterpillar roll, etc. Lots of rolls. We left stuffed and happy, having gotten our stomachs filled for a good price. I'd recommend this place to anyone super hungry at lunch wanting to get some sushi!
I do not consider myself a sushi aficionado. But after living in multiple regions of America I have sampled a wide range of sushi and know what is good and not. Though I've always liked sushi I've never had a wow moment. Well, that changed once I dined at Sushi 88 & Ramen.
I had my first wow moment when I bit into an 88 Roll, one of their signature Premium Rolls. Their premium rolls are amazing! The taste complexity and textures are astounding! I've been here about five times and have yet to be let down. I can't help but continue to try the various premium rolls. I'm so happy to have found this place. I look forward to exploring the menu beyond what I've already tasted.
This is my to-go sushi spot in the South Bay Area. The restaurant itself has got a hip vibe, plenty of seating and the sushi master's greet you as you pass the bar. It can get a little pricey (depending what rolls and how many you order) but you will never leave thinking you didn't get enough. Portions are generous. I usually get at least one roll and my fiance a bento box. She is always taking home her leftovers. My first visit I ordered three different rolls (not premium) and could only finish about one and a half. I've learned I'm full on one roll. I can't imagine ordering from the all-you-can-eat sushi menu. But if you're hungry, that menu is there.
The service is attentive and friendly. Questions are answered kindly and drinks and retrieval of empty plates are done frequently in an unobtrusive way to guests. I have consistently tipped generously because of this. Though there is ample seating, later hours especially on the weekend can get busy. If you're dining during this busy time frame I urge you to consider a reservation. Otherwise you might have to wait a moment or two (they have a very comfortable couch area to do so) or decide to dine earlier in the evening. I often visit just after work, during the 5-6pm hour and have no problem getting seated right away.
If you're craving tasty, reasonably priced sushi in a comfortable environment I urge you to give Sushi 88 & Ramen a try. You cannot go wrong with the Premium Rolls. I had the Superman roll for the first time last night and was again blown away by the quality of ingredients, flavors and textures. Yummy!
