Anybody that gives this place less than 5 stars is no friend of mine.
I have a physical addiction to their steak tacos. Â Although they are priced higher at this location than any of the other locations I have been, they are still worth the money. Â Two steak tacos with everything and a Coke Zero - that would probably be my last meal if I had to choose. Â And I have no problems ordering that for lunch or at 2 in the morning after a long night of drinking. Â TBK tastes good at all hours of the day!
Yes, I'm a Taco Burrito King like-er. Â It's not glamorous but a good option for those late night cravings of the unhealthiest kind. Â Need a little somethin, then the Junior size burrito might just do. Â If not, then the King or Super King size surely will fill you up. TBK has more than just burritos. They have all the other usual Mexican fast food fare. Breakfast options too. Â Oh, and veggie options are served up at TBK. Open late so if you're in the area, easy street parking in front will get you in/out in a jiffy.
Review Source:I have to give a 3 star rating because this places is okay with great food. Every time I visit the place I get great food, as long as I don't order chicken; it always seems like the chicken is days old in taste. This would have totally been a 5 star place for me because it's in the west loop, cheap, open late night and has good food continuously. The chicken I mentioned earlier wasn't my meal, I've tried some of my friends meals, I smashed my steak burrito meal every time. The biggest problem is the workers, their attitude is incessantly shitty, and makes me skip out on going there sometimes, but I just can't give anymore money to chipotle. They always get mad at me when I say no beans; The beans are good, but I get sick every time I eat them, besides it's my food, my money, I want it my way.
Review Source:This place is the pettiest business establish I've ever dealt with. The owner/workers really don't care about accomodating the customer; in fact, their pettiness drives people like me away.
1.) They charge if you extra if you want tomatoes, onions, Â or cilantro, on your food if it doesn't come with it.
2.) They used to charge $.50 for a cup of ice water and now only sell bottle water.
3.) They have a steak and eggs meal which is actually quite good. I asked if they could switch it to chicken and eggs and they wanted to charge me $1.20 extra. I never knew chicken can cost more than steak.
4.) On another occasion I called for a pick up order for the chicken and eggs and they said since it's not on the menu they can't make it, but they made it  for me a week before  when I was present at the restaurant and paid the extra $1.20.
I'd rather pay a little more and have good service than a business that keeps nickling and diming me everything. It's a turn off man! I do it 2 stars because their food is pretty decent.
If you're ever looking for great tacos at an affordable price, Taco Burrito King is the place to go. Â What I like best is that the staff is friendly and fast. Â To top it off, it is open 24 hours a day. Â Instead of McDonalds on the way back from the club, consider Taco Buritto King. Â Your stomach won't be upset with you the next day.
Review Source:Sure I understand that it's a inexpensive restaurant surrounded by Greek restaurants but I didn't expect to buy a burrito and felt as though I would have been better off going to chipotle. Don't get me wrong, I've only eaten here once and it wasn't awful but it wasn't superb either. It's a cute (in a dingy way) burrito shop. I'm going to try it again and come back to update but don't let my one not so great experience stop you from trying this could be great late night joint.
Review Source:small mexican restaurant with decent service that's open 24/7.. pricing is not bad either!
i ordered a king steak burrito plate and steak super nachos with fries instead of chips..
i notice they use cheap steak compare to other mexican restaurants... it is the worst mexican steak meat i ever had actually...
the king burrito plate comes with a burrito , beans , and rice... the beans and rice was average and the burrito wasn't all that great since the steak was terrible..
the super nachos with fries was goood even tho i took out the steak... it had cream cheese, nacho cheese, guacamole, and the meat of choice... but it was good! i could only imagine how much better it could of been with better meat with it..
i will give this place another try and update my review .. just because of the super nacho fries was so good.. maybe their al pastor or chorizo will be better?
Good fast food joint for cheap Mexican food. Â The steak burritos are good, but if you eat them too often (i.e. for lunch once a week), you'll get tired of tangy sauce. Â The sauce they use on the red meat will drive you away from eating there too regularly. Â
Even with a line of 5 to 10 people you can get your made to order food relatively quickly. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat at this place, but if you are in the area and looking for something other than the typical fast food, it's a good option.
Also, the only bad thing I can say about TBK is... DO NOT EAT THE CHICKEN! Â I was warned beforehand by a couple of people, but since I'm not a picky eater I tried a chicken burrito. Â I've only had bad chicken at two places in Chicago, and this was one of them! Â It was cooked till the meat was really dry and even when placed in a burrito with all the other ingredients, the bad taste overwhelmed me. Â I could only eat a portion of it and ended up throwing the rest away.
why so much hating?
This is one of the better TBKs in the city, in my opinion.
Yes, there are homeless people outside that ask for change. just like every other block in the city, get over it. Not their fault.
Yes, sometimes it is not impeccably clean- that happens when there is a line out the door of people ordering and keeping the workers busy while customers who eat like parrots come and go. In the daylight, the place looks presentable enough.
And yes, it is full of drunkards post 2am, it is 2am. What are YOU doing out and sober? Drunk people know where to congregate for food that will avoid that hangover the next day.
That said, I have been here drunk at night, and sober at various hours, including breakfast time. They have never disappointed. Get an horchata, nachos, and/or sopes. Huevos and chorizo if it's breakfast. Yum.
This place had reallly delicious almost-pulled, marinated chicken (for the burritos/tacos). I just wish it wasn't so... drippy. My bag started to leak on the way back to the office (I only work a block away!).
Really big, fulfilling taco. Delicious chicken! Oh, the nachos are DELISH!!!
Next time I'll try the tacos. :)
So after a night of delicious shenanigans around the city, we ended up at TBK. Â (Yeah, we're tight so we're on a nickname basis around here!)
My steak burrito and my tostada satisfied a drunken need only a hole-in-the-wall type of joint could conquer. Â And that's just what they delivered.
Fantastic food. Â VERY fast service. Â Hot, fresh, awesome.
I will be back...
I took a taco salad home with me last night and I wish I had gone somewhere in Pilsen instead. This place is ONLY suited for drunk UIC bastards, there is no excuse otherwise to hit up this place.
The taco salad was overwhelmingly slathered in processed cheese goo and sour cream, and I found a little plastic string in the mix. Yuck.
I can't deny it - I have a slight addiction to TBK....it used to only be a drunken thing, but after having it sober, I am def a fan.
The steak is seasoned just right and they have daily specials that are a steal! Â Steak and eggs on Friday for $5.99, anyone? Â So worth it. Â And the fry their tortillas so the tacos and burrito always have a slight crunch - yum.
It can be sketchy though...late night is too packed and rowdy on the weekends and the wait can be dreadful...getting it to go would be ideal, but if and when I end up here then I that means I want to eat NOW. Â Keep a quick eye on tables leaving so you can grab a seat for your party. Â Otherwise, the lunch crowd is normal and the early dinner crowd is scarce. Â Call me anti-social, but I prefer the quiet, daytime atmosphere.
Definitely one of my favorite places to go to for a late night bite!!! Â When I lived by UIC, we went here for their GIANT burritos. Â Their food is always so good. Â There is no disappointment. Â This place is a hole in a wall place. Â But those are the ones that has the best Mexican food. Â
Not to mention, they prepare their food fresh as you order it! Â It might take a bit longer. Â But it is worth the wait. Â Their burritos are the best!!! Â They are HUGE. Â They come in 3 different sizes: Â Junior, King Size, SUPER KING SIZE!!! Â This place can get packed in the middle of the night when everyone is done with the local bars and such.
My favorite things to get here are:
- Â Burrito
- Â Tacos
- Â Toastada
- Â Chips and Salsa
I can't tell if the the food was really good or if I was really hungry. But Taco Burrito King is a nice change in Greek Town. I got chicken enchiladas that were decent but the plate was flooded with refried beans and rice. So typical of most Mexican places and I can't stand it when the sides are more then the main course.
For those who care, the chicken is not chicken breast it is pulled  or shredded dark meat.
I don't think a burrito should have lettuce or sour cream inside.....I'm from L.A where there are burrito spots everywhere you turn and it's never made this way....especially with ground beef!!! Â
I want a Carne Asada Burrito, mexican style. Â Carne Asada, onion, cilantro, beans and rice....
I love this place. I occasionally go after class on Thursdays and sometimes when I'm out with friends. The Pollo Tacos & Veggie Tacos are amazing with salsa verde. Even the chips and salsa are delicioso!
I especially enjoy that the cook remembers me when I come in and speaks to me in espanol! Pepe's I'm sorry, but I want a divorce. Go TBK!
Let's be honest you only go to TBK when you are drunk, you know late late Friday or Saturday night.I made the mistake of coming here one day sober and I realize how rude the male cashier was to me .he is always there when I go and he is always like this. First  of all I'm trying to place my order and he start talking to one of his coworker while I'm talking to him then he asked me to repeat my order I'm trying to and he said WHAT!!  speak up and he was looking kind of crazy and I'm looking like um ok,I repeated it again for the 3 time and the food was ready quick it was good of course he didn't make, thank goodness!!
Taco burrito king Food is good,Attitude freaking sucks. Improve or you will be just another Mexican joint.
I would rather go to the one on western and Addison then the one that's Just around the corner.
Shame shame shame on you TBK!!
Okay, I just ordered my junior steak burrito with extra meat and it was the perfect amount of food. It was not bad, average.
Green salsa = beware, it's very spicy.
Red salsa = thumbs up.
No surrounding drunk people tonight. Everyone was sober inside, including myself. It was slow was a slow Wednesday night.
I must admit that I'm shocked Taco Burrito King has such a high average rating. Â It used to be the case but the trend is away from good service and quality food.
You will be harassed walking into this place by people begging for money and they tend to be of the more drunk and severe type than in other areas of the city. Â
On to the food. Â Okay food.
On to the service. Â They don't care that you're there. Â I used to eat here all the time and the service was great. Â Now they don't even give you any napkins. Â It takes less time in white table cloth restaurants to get your food than here. Â So you better not be in a rush.
It's always dirty inside. Â I love taco places in this city and this is the worst. Â Dirty. Probably because they give you no napkins to clean your face or table before exiting.
Two steak tacos cost the same as a side of chips and guacamole, which doesn't seem right. Â A side of chips and guacamole should cost $2.95 to $4.00 but $5.00+ is a bit much for a "side". Â Sides shouldn't cost more than your meal.
Taco Burrito King serves to-go orders in Styrofoam. Â Styrofoam can not be recycled in the city and is terrible for the environment. Furthermore, Taco Burrito King does not recycle anything. Â Thankfully they do serve in-house dining on real plates.
If they could pick it up on the service add a smile, recycle and check the pricing of their side dishes I would eat here on a much more regular basis again. Â Also if they could get the drunks to go away outside the door and frequently inside, that would be an improvement.
Taco Burrito Fraud. No matter how much you ask, they won't make you a taco burrito. If it's two am, and if I'm too drunk to figure out how to eat a burrito and then a taco, I'm definitely not in the mood to argue the logistics of constructing your namesake.
It's not like I wanted it with Unicorn meat or anything.
TBK has been the #1 go to when I am THAT 'local drunk' or the day after I've been THAT drunk. I have a long history with this place and I've been there almost at every hour of the day: sunrise, high noon, afternoon, sunset, evening, midnight, the devil's hour.... I can't tell if being open 24 hours is heaven sent or dangerous...I been there with an entourage, en solo, for family time (well sis and I), and with the beau; it's hard to say whether I tend to like my company or the food better, the food is damn good, I can easily have the tendency to forget I am even with another person when my plate is in front of me here. I have come here with smeared makeup, in frumpy clothes, or droopy drunk eyes, and they don't flinch with judgment.. they see ALL types of people here, come together in a common place for the love of great, cheap mexican food.
I have tried a lot off of their menu.. even the not soo mexican cheese fries and they are muy yummy. The super nachos are some of the best and anybody that has shared a bite is sold and usually suggests the next visit, "wanna share some super nachos?". with Chicken or beef, both are great. I would suggest eating any of these items in this par there though instead of to go cuz they can get a bit soggy & messy by the time you get home.
I initially used to come here for their notorious subway size burritos. You can have 'em in junior, king or super king size.. and they are epic! I used to get king just for shear amazement... sometimes save the other half if I was in my right mind for later. Juniors are fulfilling enough though.
Their sopes were the first I ever tried, good impression. Lately, I often get a cheese quesadilla and a beef taco, both about $2 each; their quesadilla is simple but irresistible to me and the taco is soo good and cheap it makes taco bell seem like dog food. Good guac and chips, taste authentic.
When craving an enchilada, and my fav place for that NUEVO LEON was closed (go see my review for this), I attempted it here.... def not the same. Missing the unforgettable mole sauce they perfected. Not bad though, I am just a lil jaded from that.
I have had them catered to an event before: 100 half burritos and other tidbits like guac and the crowd WAS PLEASED. They were champs, they had 'em all done on time too so I def recommend to try them if you are over office pizzas, donuts, or sammies.
Wow, so many negative reviews. Maybe I'm biased because my work usually picks up the tab for group TBK lunches but I don't get how this place is a "dump" as a previous reviewer suggested.
Each time I'm here picking up orders or having a burrito on my own time the place is pretty clean. Unfortunately the workers may be a different story as they don't wear gloves while handling your food. When it's slow your food handler might also be your cash handler... it's disgusting but then again I eat my fruit from the grocery store without washing it... I like to think of it as building up my immune system. I understand if not everyone feels the same.
The food on the other hand in my opinion is pretty good although not mind blowing. I like that they add ladles of fat, I'm not actually sure what they're applying with a ladle during the burrito cooking process, but I like to think that it's a nice spoonful of saturated fat. Everyone knows saturated fats are tasty. In terms of produce, the tomatoes and lettuce have always been exceptionally fresh.
They have daily lunch specials available which makes this a great place to grab a burrito for lunch if you're tired of the crowded Chipotle on Wacker.
Open 24/7
Steak Nachos rule, although pricey.
They always give me extra limes free of charge.
They have daily specials that run from 12:01am to 11:59pm which allows me to grab thier taco plate or steak dinner cheap late nite.
I've only been here sober, as I work at night, but serivce is solid and quick, even when there's a million drunks in there.
People watching can be fun, but also ghetto.
This is a 1/2 star review.
I've actually stopped going to this more-than-convenient TBK location because I know for a fact that I have been ripped off by them on more than one occasion. Maybe they think they can pull that with the folks who go in drunk, but I'm talking about going in there at lunch during the week completely sober. They will ring up your "purchase" and conveniently "lose" the receipt and if you try to question them about the total or the amount of change you received they will ring up another receipt with a completely different total.
The service is belligerent and rude and the burritos and tacos aren't worth it. I've actually had decent food from there, but I've also had less than acceptable food from there. The place is also usually crawling with homeless people trying to beg off the customers and steal tips from the tip cup. I won't speak on the cleanliness of the place because I wouldn't actually ever sit in those seats or at those tables.
The whole experience might be okay if you're not wholly aware of what is going on, but when the staff would rather argue with each other than get you your food in a timely and efficient manner at the right price, it's a whole other story.
No thanks, TBK.
Not the absolute cheapest nor best of taco relief stations across the corn tortilla void of the midwest, Taco Burrito King is one of the fastest and cleanest.
My staples are the veg burrito and the veg nachos, both are filling. The salsas are bland and watered down, asking for jalapenos gets you an extra charge.
This location's staff has always been fast and professional. It can be 3am, 4am, I can be drunk, I can be in handcuffs and spitting rabies.. they will still dutifully ask for my toppings and whether I would like hot sauce or extra jalapenos.
TBK has great food when you're ending a long night. Â The tacos al pastor really hit the spot so as a late night dive taco shop TBK ROCKS.
But I'm going to give TBK 1 stars because the last three times I've been there during the day and at night a homeless man has asked me for change either at the cash register or at my table. Â I was just there tonight for dinner and a really aggressive bum proceeded to lay the guilt trip on hard while the staff stood idle pretending not to speak English. Â I thought that I was going to get into a fight with this guy and all I wanted was a freaking taco! Â When he left I asked them why they tolerate bums in their store and all I got was a blank stare. Â Then the illegal working behind the counter, who seemed to be pretty stoned, started quietly talking trash about me in Spanish right in front of me to his buddy. Â No mames CALBRON!
Taco Burrito King is like any of Chicago's many taco burrito houses, but it's still a great place to stop for a breakfast burrito or a regular burrito for that matter. Â The prices are on the cheap size, the service is quick and friendly, the options are plentiful, and the portions are large. Â
A co-worker of mine told me that there's a 25% you'll get sick from the food, but a 100% chance you'll enjoy yourself. Â I can't say that I've ever felt sick after eating here, but I can say that I have always enjoyed my meals.
I work around the corner and Taco Burrito King has found a place in my regular breakfast/lunch rotation.
Fast, cheap, big... and wait... GOOD.
I've stopped by here a few times and have not been disappointed. It's definitely a "burrito joint" and not at all any sort of "restaurant." But as burrito joints go, it's a good one. It's one of the ones where a veggie burrito means veggies: grilled peppers and onions, not just cold lettuce, onion, and tomato. Or just lettuce, like some places. Because that's all vegetarians eat. :/
Yeah, it's not classy, it's not super-authentic, but they do fill that Good Burrito niche, and they fill it well.
I go here sober.
There I said it.
Also for those of you that like to "GO GREEN" you will be happy to find out that TBK is a frontrunner in the "solar powered burrito" category. Â An article in wired magazine praised the owner of this chain for his innovation and use of solar panels at his chicago locations.
(read more here: <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wired.com%2Fwired%2Farchive%2F13.05%2Fsolar.html%3Fpg%3D2%26topic%3Dsolar%26topic_set%3D&s=a4065baee5ea7180493cdc8b1ad3ae8ce8f0ca577dc38d193cb0f5eedfa48844" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.wired.com/wir…</a>)
I work in Greektown and go here about once a week. Â I usually stay away from the burritos (so i don't have to take a mid afternoon nap under my desk), but I believe i have tried everything on the menu. Â My favorite is the enchilada plate, however the Torta is extremely popular among my co-workers.
The service is fast and friendly, in the past couple years they have remodeled and it is the only solar powered burrito joint I know of. Â
For the year of 2007 there is a special on the 15th of every month. Â King Sized Burritos are 2.99 all day (and this place is open 24 hours a day). Â It is celebrating their 15th birthday. Â
YAY TBK!!! 4 stars (it is a 24/7 burrito joint after all)
We ate here yesterday bec Jubilee Juice was not open!
Don't get the veggie taco's, I just ordered something really fast but I should have ordered an enchilada plate or a burrito but didnt really see the menu until afterward, I would be willing to try it again but would not get the veggie tacos which were just grilled onions and peppers on a couple corn tortillas with some cheese and sour cream on top...
Preface:I love burritos, I work across the street and its the only burrito place around. Â That said I've had 2 steak burritos, a chicken, an al pastor, and most recently a vegetarian burrito out of fear of encountering the same low quality meat I found in the first 4 burritos. Â Even the vegetarian burrito left a huge puddle of orange grease on my plate. Â The burritos are greasy and the meat is low quality. Â I would not recommend this place unless you work across the street, have an irresistable craving for a burrito but don't have time to go out of the area to get a decent one. Â
Oh - and the people comparing this to taco bell shouldn't be giving advice about restaurants, it's like raving about Denny's because their cheeseburger is so much better than McDonalds.
