My wife and I stopped in for a glass of wine after a movie at the York Theatre on a Friday night.  Its small and doesn't have a ton of seating but they make the most of it.  This was my first visit and I was pleasantly surprised to find a live musician playing and a light menu of cheese pairings for the wine.  Service was friendly and not rushed.  Very comfortable atmosphere.  I would definitely go back.

Love this place.  I guess Im a little late on the review since Im pretty much always here.  Anyway, fantastic service, great wine, great beer selection for a wine shop, and a comfortable atmosphere.  what more could one want?

I stopped in here with my mom because there was a sandwich board outside advertising a Saturday special for $5 glasses of select wine.

When we inquired at the bar, the lady at the counter said she hadn't decided which wines to offer for $5, then placed three bottles in front of us said to pick any of them. We each had two glasses from the array she placed in front of us. By the time we finished, another lady had taken over and she charged us for the full prices on all glasses. I said I thought some of the wine we had was part of the special, she checked with the original woman who was standing in earshot of us, and then confirmed that none of the wine we ordered was part of the special. Huh?

Okay, I probably should have insisted on the discounted rate, but I got the distinct impression that this lady was judging us for being a cheap, hobo grad student with her wary-of-fancy-things mom. At any given time, these are both true enough observations, so whatever maybe I should wear a sundress and look more like a yuppie when I hang out in the suburb where my grandparents live, but the pretentiousness was a little off-putting when it was their mistake to begin with.

Anyway, I won't be returning, but it's a nice enough place and the wine was fine.

I went to my friend, "Who just got a new job" Celebration Party at Tannins Wine Bar last Friday night. Tannins had live entertainment with no cover which was awesome. Everyone at our table was ordering different wine flights with cheese and couldn't stop talking about them. I had a Organic Cider and a Arrogant Bas-tard Ale which were both great, especially the Arrogant Bas-tard Ale.

We had Great service, and the staff were very friendly and helpful when it came to our party, making decisions on wines to try. Tannins is a amazing place that I plan to take my girlfriend to, for a romantic date on our next date night.

I'm glad that some people have had a nice experience here because ours pretty much sucked!  I too went on a Groupon for four people and was promised four flights of three different wines and two cheese platters.  Well, let me just say that I don't consider less than half full wine glasses a flight - more like a short hop on a puddle jumper.  And the "cheese" bits were barely visible on the platter, being the size of my little fingernail.  (Huh, I guess in some ways it was JUST like an airline flight, LOL!)  The young waitress didn't even give me a chance to seat myself on a very high and uncomfortable bar stool at a dinky 36" square table wedged tightly in the corner of the front window before she demanded my Groupon and could only manage to come up with TWO wine lists for us to peruse before she hopped back three times to ask us if we had made up our minds.  GEESH! I did, however, manage to choose three excellent wines, though my friends weren't quite as lucky.  I also bought a bottle of an outstanding Vietti Moscato to take home and the company was great, so the evening wasn't an entire loss.  I'm hoping this joint cheaped out on us due to the Groupon, because if what we were served is their normal size portions, you are better off going to Whole Foods, buying your favorite pricey cheese and wine and inviting your friends over to your place!

Had a very nice time here. Very friendly staff and nice atmosphere. You could do the flight of wine and cheese platter which is good. They also have some nice beers. I had a glass of Cane and Abel and Avery's IPA and it was great. I'd go back again for sure. They also have live music on Friday nights and sometimes Saturdays.

I had bought the $15 groupon for a flight of wine and two cheese platters and it was sooo worth it. They let us choose our flights and the choices were:
    My flight:
-yangara- aromatic nose of eucalyptus and anise give way to a palate of berry and chocolate. Liked it a lot. Could be a bit stonger for my taste, but was a really great choice
-raspberry wine-very delicious, sweet wine. Not too overwhelming.
-amore chocolate port-yum! This was a great finish. It was a good thing I had the flights, but I think it could have been too much if I had gotten a full glass.

    Hubbys choices:
-Cambrian- aromas of apples, peaches, lime blossoms and vanilla. Tasted nice and light
-messenger- ripe black fruit aromas blend with comple, layered flavors of caramel, earthiness, and spice. This one was probably my favorite of all of them. Perfect strength and taste.
    - 50/50(chocolate port and raspberry wine)-this was half and half of my two sweet wines. It had a nice touch.

    Cheeses-
French plate:,chubier, comte, and Brie. The brie tasted like the blue cheese and I am not usually a fan of blue cheese, but it was great with the apple slices it came with so it was not overwhelming.
Artisan plate: vella aged, Monterey Jack, rogue smokey blue, and grafton cheddar. Again...I am not a big fan of blue cheese, but this one came with dried cranberries and that made it taste better. The hubby pretty much ate all of it. haha

Overall...this package was a steal with our groupon and didn't have to pay for anything (besides our tip and we tipped the waitress nicely). Love this place and it's so close to home!

A good option for Elmhurst...and I am happy that are part of the Elmhurst scene.
While more of a Flight 112 person it is great to have a beer/wine/cheese/music option.

Recently went to Tannins to cash out a Living Social coupon (or was it Groupon???).
Anyway....I had purchased a coupon for 2 flights of wine and assorted chocolates.
Sadly Wifey was out of town and today was the last day to utilize the coupon.
My attempt to trade in the coupon for beers was denied....so 2 flights of wine it was.

I do enjoy the Karmelite there. Love it on tap.

Will try to get here more often.
    Now that Wifey is home..........................

Super friendly staff, more than willing to suggest and customize a flight for your taste.  I was surprised to find an impressive craft beer selection and feature beers on tap are constantly changing.  Again, the staff was just an knowledgeable about the beer as they were with the wine.

Tannins does have outdoor seating when it's warmer out, but it is limited and a little cramped.  Indoor seating in ample for a small shop.  Bar seating is available as well.

It's a great place for after dinner to relax, try something new, and maybe go home with a new favorite bottle!

We went to Tannins because of an offer through LivingSocial and it was well worth the trip.  My wife and I both had a wine flight and chocolate dessert tray.  The wait staff was on top of things and never let us go very long without asking if we needed anything.  Even when we had an issue with the bill that we did not notice until the next day, they were very apologetic and refunded the money right then and there.

I found Tannins to have a warm, comfortable atmosphere.  This is a good place to order a drink and have a conversation at a normal volume.  I found the staff to be cordial. The appetizers were decent in terms of quality and quantity: cheese and crackers, etc. But I was disappointed with the wine!  Since the place is named "Tannins" I was expecting to be blown away by an immense selection. I was expecting to see some vintage Bordeaux bottles around somewhere. Nope. Many of the wines on the tasting menu didn't even list their vintage. The wines, even in their shop area at the back, were very young, 20-buck-chuck stuff for the most part and were not stored in a temperature/humidity controlled environment. So in summary I would say it is a nice bar, but not a wine bar, so don't expect to find mature, high quality wine.

Wines tried were great. Cheese sampler was surprisingly good. I never realized that this is actually a store as well as a wine bar- you can purchase wines, chocolates, and cheese. Also, I found it interesting- you can bring food from the outside with a 2 bev. min/ person. My only disappointment was the price. Prices seemed high, but not high enough to keep me away.

Great staff, well rounded and good conversation. You always have interesting conversation w/the patrons, which is nice for us. But if you want to be alone, don't sit at the bar, pick a table. Quite intimate, only 4-5 small tables and the bar that seats about 8 or so. Prices are fair for an excellent choice of wines, and a serious selection of beers (at least 20). Small app plates too (think cheese, olives, snacky stuff).

Outstanding wine selection.  We brought in food from WoknFire to eat at Tannins and had the best of both worlds with food of our choosing and great wines, too.  We will definitely be back.  They also have cheese plates and dessert chocolate for those who want a bite or something to complement their dinner from another restaurant.  Fabulous atmosphere and tremendous friendly and knowledgeable service.

Tannin's is a warm and friendly little wine shop in downtown Elmhurst.  The owner, Lisa, is very knowledgable about her wine and is always willing to help you make a good choice, or introduce you to a new great bottle.  She hosts wine tastings at the local art museum once a year, and has tons of wine reps there with all varieties of wine available; and also holds monthly small tastings at her shop as well.  I love shopping here because she has an obvious passion for what she does, and it shows in her knowledge of wines, but at the same time, she is not snooty and supercilious in her knowledge.  But here is the best part:  they are currently building a wine bar in the shop which should be open in a couple of months, and they will feature wines by the glass and small appetizers as well!  I can guarantee that this wine bar, which is right around the corner from my business, will be a common hangout for me and my clients, because wine of course is healthy for your heart!

UPDATE 3/28 - The wine bar at Tannin's has just opened and it looks to be a great place to hang out!  Lisa will serve flights of wine, or you can choose to buy a bottle from her retail selection, have it opened and have a drink from it, and then she will package it up for you to take home.  (Don't worry, there is some new law that allows this if it is packaged up correctly and legally!).  If you are ever in the downtown area of Elmhurst, make sure to have a drink or two here!
