    Meh.

I am not particularly picky about Mexican food. That being said... my friend and I came here because it was convenient and cheap. Unfortunately, we were a bit disappointed.

We got the following.... Steak Burrito: the steak was not the best quality (understandingly so for the money) but it was tasty  and filling enough; Steak Taco: same as above but a bit on the small side; Torta al Pastor: the meat was very fatty and a bit on the bland side (the rest of the ingredients were also lacking in flavor). and The Steak "Tostada": The flavors were lacking but worst of all it wasn't even on a tostada! WTF?! It came on an overheated regular tortilla. So not only was it lacking in flavor, it was a soft soggy mess (insert jokes here).

I am sorry to say (not really), that I won't be back here thanks to Mr. Tostada. Well, maybe I will. I just won't get the tostada. I sure hope it was just one of "those" days for them.

    p.s. The service was great.

Pass this place on my way to work a lot and always wanted to come and try, so finally I had to. I've been here once with a friend and they were very nice and the food was good as well as pretty cheap in price. I'm thinking about going back today actually.

    UPDATE 10/2/2012
I've been here PLENTY more times since my initial post. I love this place! I always order tongue and beef tacos and they're very good. I sometimes take menudo to go, just so I can have something delicious in the morning (most the time at night) haha. The ladies here that take your order are always very sweet and I it's a good place to come in to and just sit to eat or have delivered.

Thanks guys! Will see you very soon!

I can't believe it took me so long to try this place!

After moving to Jefferson Park almost 10 months ago, I finally tried Taqueria La Estralla, and I was pleasantly surprised with the food.

I suppose I was reluctant to try this place because I'm always leery of restaurants that offer Mexican, Italian and American food. Stick to one nationality's food, and be really good at it, right? Places that tend to offer everything, are good at nothing. At least that's what I think.

Anyway, once I looked at a menu, I learned that they no longer offer pizza, but they do still sell American food, like wings, ribs and burgers. But it seems like their real specialty is Mexican food, which I think they should focus on and ditch the American food, but it's not my restaurant, so whatever.

I ordered the Enchiladas Suizas for $8, which came with rice and beans. It was really tasty! My husband ordered the steak burrito, which he also got with rice and beans for $8. He liked his as well. We did carryout, but you can dine-in or have it delivered. I pass this place all the time, and it always looks empty inside. It doesn't seem like anyone really dines inside, but it's an option if you're interested.

Overall, I was really pleased with what I ordered and will definitely order again. Good stuff!

Very average burrito in my opinion.  In fact, I would call it below average.  It was mostly loaded with rice... very little cheese.  No sour cream, no guac.  I guess they were pushing the health aspects of their burrito?

I don't know what they were pushing, but I refuse to push the review beyond 2 stars.

Parking is also an issue, because there's no street parking.  In the back, there's this little driveway.  It was fine since I was taking it to go.

I had their steak tacos with cilantro, onions, avocado, and cheese. It was very good. It's really nice and clean inside. Note there is no front or street parking. There is only very limited parking right behind the establishment.

I visited here on a quiet Saturday afternoon after hanging out at the pool. Cristina was our server and she was sweet, professional and attentive. The food was really good. It was your typical neighborhood taco place, but different because at the time we visited, it was really quiet, which was nice. I highly recommend it if you need a bite to eat and are in the neighborhood shopping or hanging out at the nearby park.

I eat here way too much, I've actually cut back to about twice a week, but it used to be like 4 times a week.  It is soo good all the time.  Don't expect to go in there and dine for the ambiance, it really is more of a quick meal or carry out place.  I have had tacos, burritos, chiles rellenos, tortas, huaraches...and I always love it! It's reasonably priced...though I think they recently had a small increase.

Taqueria La Estrella is a pretty typical, average taco joint.  No complaints what so ever.  I eat here on a semi-regular basis and the food has always been pretty standard.

I've had the Juevos a la Mexicana which, surprisingly have NOT been consistent.  When I first started ordering this I loved it but the last few times it seems like the dish lost all flavor.  I actually mentioned something to the owner about it, who, by the way, is a super nice guy, he seemed genuinely concerned so maybe the next time I order it'll be back up to par.

I've also had the taco dinner and torta - both steak.  The beans that come with the taco dinner go back and forth on consistency.  Sometimes they're thick and delicious other times they're crazy watery.  Not a big fan of their beans, I've had better.

I know they make they're own salsa, which they give you with chips when you eat in.  The taste of the salsa also fluctuates, some days it's really good, others just so-so.

This is a pretty average review but by no means is it a bad review.  Like I said, I eat here pretty regularly so they must be doing something right to keep me coming back - other than being crazy convenient location wise!

Simply put, La Estrella is awesome. Their veggie burrito is great -- it's huge, contains what seems like an entire avocado, and is only $5. The staff is extremely friendly, and the horchata is great.

However, a few weeks ago, my boyfriend and I discovered a piece of meat mixed in with the beans. The waitress looked confused when we pointed it out to her, and after a conversation with the cook, we learned that they use pork when they prepare the beans. We'd been eating there once or twice a week for several months, and as adamant vegetarians, we were seriously bummed... but then they told us that from then on, they'd start cooking their beans without it! We haven't been back since, but we're planning on doing so very soon, and I'll be sure to update this review.

Good, cheap Mexican food, delicious horchata, decent selection.  No complaints.

I thought the food was good.  I have gone here a few times to try the different food they offer.  I liked the tacos (beef, pork, and steak) that I have tried.  I thought the burrito was pretty good.  I also liked the seasoned rice.  I didn't think the refried beans were that great, but that is just one small aspect.

The atomosphere is very casual.  The biggest problem they have is parking.  There is only a very small lot 4 total cars two deep. It has the fact that it is less than a block from the Jefferson Park Transit Center as a positive.  Walk over for a taco.

The price is pretty good.  I will be returning to try some of the other food.

This place used to be Taqueria el Gallo, but was closed by the city (I don't know why), and stayed closed for a good five months with the ever-promising "OPEN VERY SOON" sign in the front window.  They finally opened about a month ago, and though I was wary, I was desperate to find a good Mexican place in my neighborhood.

I am so glad I tried it!  My husband and I tried an assortment of tacos as well as a gordita.  The tacos de carne asada were muy delicioso, the tacos al pastor were decent (I am never too happy with these since my out-of-body experience eating them in Mexico, I don't know why I bother...), and the tacos de carnitas were extremely tasty, if a little too heavy on the pieces of fat.  The gordita, which was with rajas y queso--that's poblanos and cheese--was gigantic, and really good, too.  I was also pleased with their salsas, both red and green, and our order came with a side of lime wedges and jalapeos.

I will definitely be checking out some more things on the menu, which includes tortas, tostadas, enchiladas, sopes, huaraches, and a variety of grilled meats and shrimp.   They also serve breakfast and have fresh squeezed orange and carrot juice, as well as licuados, just like any good Mexican place should.

One more thing.  This is more of a carry-out place than a restaurant, I think it's byob, but their horchata is awesome, so who needs alcohol?

(update) We have since gone here a few more times and I am changing my rating to five stars; even without an atmosphere, the food is so wonderful!  I just can't get enough of those tacos de carnitas, and they are only 99 cents!  My new fave (though this changes every time I try anything new there) is the gordita with nopales y papas, that's cactus and potatoes.  The cactus has a faint cured green bean taste, but don't let that description deter you, they really are amazing!  For my husband and I to get waayyy too much food, we spend around $11-12.  So much better than La Palapita, where tacos are decent, but way overpriced...
