So, so good.  I don't think it's called Thamara Cafeteria anymore because the signs say something-something kitchen, but! Let me tell you, they still have the jibarito gyro.  I did not get to try that earlier this week, but I did have a regular gyro.  This is one of my favorite gyro places.  They make sure that the meat is crispy and they take their time with fresh vegetables and ample sauce.

I can't wait to go back and try the jibarito gyro because I love me some fried plantains!

Good gyros at a good price.  Fries were mediocre.

    A JIBARITO GYRO?  WHAAAAAAAT?

A gyro sandwich using tostones (fried plantains) for bread. And it's not too greasy. Served with arroz con juicy gandules (rice & pigeon peas).  It's effing delicioso.

This may be the most important street food syncretism in our town since Jews, Italians, Greeks and Blacks united to create the Chicago Hot Dog in the 30's.

This delectable treat is a synthesis of the gyro (created in its present form by Chicago Greeks) and the jibarito (created by Chicago Puerto Ricans).  I don't know if the owners of Thamara came up with the concept of putting gyro meat on plantains, but they're really nice people, they present the food with panache (the owner actually took a picture of my food - no se porque), and the sandwich is exquisito!

The ham and cheese breakfast sandwich is so good, the portions are large and delicious for the price. They are quick, friendly, and down the street from me. Ive eaten here a few times already, and have had a great experience each time.

This place used to be called Taqueria El Palenque and it was a usual Mexican food joint.  They closed for a short while and cleaned house and now serve good food you'd expect from a corner neighborhood fast food place.  What's nice is that they have breakfast, too, which is hard to find in an area that just serves Tacos and Elotes (although there's nothing wrong with that).

My favorite item from this place so far are their Jibarito sandwiches.  If you haven't had a Jibarito sandwich yet, you must eat one today.  Fried plantains with a sweet taste make up the "bun" and there's steak (or chicken), onions, tomatoes, cheese, garlic, and other goodness in between.   They take about 10 minutes to make if it's not busy so be prepared to wait a little.
