The decor and ambience of this place are what make it. Â The food is pretty good and the menu is unique, but the portions are small, particularly considering the prices. Â I tried one pastry and was not a fan, but I've gotten a couple cappucinos that I enjoyed. Â Today, I tried the salmon tartine which was TINY. Â In the past, I ordered other sandwiches that, like the tartine, were delicious, but left me hungry. Â I'd go back for lunch on a day when I have snacks to help me make it through the afternoon. Â They do have a lot of vegetarian options. Â It's not a fantastic place to sit for a long time because the chairs are uncomfortable, but if you can snag a spot by a window, you can get in some good people watching. Â If you need to go to the bathroom, it's inconveniently located.
Review Source:CHOCOLATE DOME CAKE. The finest thing to ever hit a chocoholics taste buds. Do not make the mistake I did and buy just one. Be a pig and buy two. I bought one, liked it sooo much I went to get another one. They were all GONE! When I bought them there were 5 left. When I went back, someone was purchasing the rest. The secret is out.
Don't buy one, buy two! Â This place was so friendly and warm. Entirely unexpected in the loop. The owner kept coming by our table and asking if everything was good. I liked that! And everything was more than good. It was Delicious! I'd give you guys 5 stars...but I gained like 5 lbs eating here.
So I had to take one star away. Not really your fault. Mine. Â Chocolate Dome Cake. EAT IT!
I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch and mini French lesson. (The indicator for where to deliver the plate is not a number, but is a letter and with it...there is a French word.) The scene is very Euro-cafe and I enjoyed my window seat looking East toward Michigan Avenue. Â My sandwich was excellent and a decent serving size for the price. The staff was friendly and attentive to cleaning up as plates were made empty. I definitely look forward to my next visit & I'm sure there will be a sweet treat involved next time as they do look fresh & divine!
There's no free wi-fi and that's the reason for a missing star.
On a whim, I decided I wanted to have cookies delivered as a surprise. Â I searched "cookie delivery" in Chicago and probably found the exact, perfect place. Â The woman who took my order was cheery and helpful, telling me what they had on hand, assisting me by recommending her favorites (the almond ones). Â I must have caught them at the right time because the owner was able to make the delivery and half an hour later, I got a text message of gratitude. Â Word is that the chocolate chip cookies are good :) Â Thanks for helping me send some smiles!
Review Source:My fiance and I stopped in here on a Sunday afternoon. Â I thought the atmosphere and the ambiance were absolutely wonderful - charming decor and made me feel like I was in Paris. Â Our drinks were good, although mine could have been hotter. Â I also had a piece of cheesecake which was rich, creamy, and delicious. Â The service was a bit off, in my opinion...the people behind the counter just seemed kind of standoffish...one woman who sold me the cheesecake was kind and helpful but the woman we placed our drink order with was not friendly. Â I don't know if maybe it had been a long, busy weekend or what, but from looking at the people who were working, it just sort of felt like they were hoping we wouldn't stay long.... Seems strange for 3pm on a Sunday... Anyways, I'll probably go back and see if it's the same reaction, as I really did love the atmosphere and would like to sit with a book and some coffee.
Review Source:The butter croissants are divine. The expresso transports me back to the streets of Paris. The staff are friendly, and the store is cute. I'm not a fan of their macarons; just stick to their pastries and you'll be fine. I need to try some of the sandwiches sometime.
Did I mention the butter croissants? They make me so happy! I also love how the owners constantly walk around and talk to people in the cafe.
Fabulous! I went here for breakfast and ordered a specialized cake for my husband's birthday. Breakfast was perfect- one of the few times I've ordered oatmeal out and not been overwhelmed by too sweet and too thick. And I can't say enough about the cake! The staff was very friendly and took the time to work with my personalized requests. I ordered an FCB-themed cake, which they designed perfectly- complete with a 3-D soccer ball and FCB shield. The cake had my guests, who usually claim that they are not 'desert people,' asking for seconds.
Review Source:Paris in Chicago!
Ever since my family and I took a trip to Paris back in October, we've been looking for a cafe that captured the true essence of a Parisian style cafe. In Chicago, Toni's is as close as it gets, and they do a very good job.
The guy who took our order was very helpful. My Fiancé doesn't eat ham, and didn't see any hot sandwiches on the menu that had chicken. He recommended a goat cheese sandwich, and said that they could add chicken. It was delicious.  She loved it.
I had the Croque Monsieur, I loved every last bite of it. I also had the salted carmel chocolate tart, it was very good. I would recommend splitting it between two people because it was very rich. I finished off my meal with a cup of their delicious coffee, way better than anything you'll get at Starbucks. My fiancé had a blueberry muffin which was really buttery and good.
They have tons of delicious looking pastries to try. I think I found my new spot to tame my sweet tooth.
Enjoyed this place so much, I came here twice on my week-long vacation in Chicago! Â The food is fine but for me, the pastries are the main attraction. Â I enjoyed the best hazelnut dacquoise EVER for the first trip and because one sugar coma isn't enough, got the salted caramel tart when I returned later in the week. Â I think it was served a little colder than it should've been (i.e. impossible to eat without power tools-- or I suppose you could just let it sit at room temp for ~10 minutes...) but the flavor was great.
This place gets crowded and noisy during the lunch rush, but otherwise it's pleasant and the staff is generally charming. Â Also note their coffee is really good, smooth and rich. Â Thumbs up!
I found Toni's because I was in need of finding a good Croque Monsieur. Wow! This place did not disappoint. A friend and I shared the Croque Monsieur and each had a bowl of soup. I had Broccoli Cheddar which was good but my friend got the Mushroom Wild Grain and it was Amazing! We decided to share a few sweets and they were great as well. I recommended the place to all my friends and I can't wait for my next visit.
Review Source:Atmosphere: Bright, clean, cozy, new, and social.
Service: Very nice and knowledgeable.
Meal:
Salami Baguette
Macaroons
Conclusion:Very tasty and a good size sandwich. The bread was a bit tough but overall a satisfying meal. I tried the macaroons which weren't amazing however the atmosphere, staff and presentation of the food invites me to return sometime soon.
3 stanx!
Friendly. Clean. Spacious. Casual. Tasty. Great ambiance. Cant really go wrong with ordering anything here which really surprised me as I wasnt expecting so much from a touristy location. High and low seating tables available. Â
I would even say that if I could, I would eat here every day!
Macaroons $1.60 a piece.
Apricot Almond pastry $4.75
Sable cookie $0.75
Eclair $ 3.75
Great ambiance, the pastries and coffee are excellent. However, during my visit last week, service was a bit confusing. I walked in and got a table, and noticed folks who seemed like waiters or perhaps runners standing around. So I placed my order at the counter and sat at my table... And nothing happened for a few minutes. Nobody seemed to move to fulfill my order. I had to come up to the counter to find out what happened. It became clear that there had been miscommunication and the order was never started. It may have been an off day...
My latte and the salted caramel chocolate tart were both top notch, however. I'll have to return to try their sandwiches.
Adorable sidewalk cafe that was SO good that I went here for breakfast 2 days in a row!! Warm slices of quiche lorraine and  berry almond brioche will make you smile bigger with every bite. Interesting cake flavors that I will be trying in the near future too--
Be sure to take a few flaky shortbread and seasonally shaped frosted sugar cookies home to share with a friend :)
Quaint little cafe, with great service! All their little eats and pastries look delectable! I definitely need to make another trip out here to try more items on their menu. Unfortunately, I got something really boring-- fruit and granola parfait. The item I originally ordered was not what I expected. The GM and Chef brought out the dish himself, and at my reaction, knew that I did not anticipate my order. He was so kind as to offer me to get something else even though he assured me it was a scrumptious. It was an open face fruit sandwich, interesting huh?
Usually, I would have stuck with the order but I really didn't want bread.
This is a cute, legit French cafe with great food and service! Indoor and Outdoor seating available. Thanks Liam! I definitely will be back :)
Such a great escape in the urban environment of the loop! Â
 Pro's:
-friendly staff
-beautiful interior
-great salads
-perfect place for lunch if you live in the loop
Con's:
-can get a little pricey
BUT SO WORTH IT!
What to order:
-the half portion of the mediterranean salad
-a cup of tea
-macaroons
-any of the home made pastries
This place is OUTSTANDING! As someone who's spent a lot of time in France I am pretty picky about places that sell so-called "French Pastries"... this place IS IT! Not only do they succeed, they succeed and then some! The owner Paul was there which was a real treat, such a hard-working, warm, and pleasant gentleman!!!
We ordered the Salmon Tartine and 2 pieces of cake (how could we NOT?!?!) The Tartine was presented nicely, and came out quickly. It was really yummy! We also had the White Chocolate Cake and the Buttermilk Cake. WOW! They're both excellent but very different. Most American's haven't been so lucky to eat real white chocolate but THIS CAKE is what real white chocolate tastes like. I had to close my eyes while eating it! The Buttermilk Cake is denser and more moist, with a real buttercream frosting (much lighter than hat you get here in the states) and it was sweeter than that White Chocolate cake. Both were exceptional. We also got espresso which was lovely!
The service was excellent! They were fast, knowledgeable and friendly. It seems they all take pride in what they do and that's rare these days. They also seemed to know a lot about what it was they were serving. Even our waitress (little blonde girl) was so sweet and she threw in little French expressions here and there!!!
This is a definite go-to for pastries, and even whole-cakes! I can't wait to go back for more!
Savory and sweet things to tempt and satisfy abound! Â Very good coffee!
Sandwiches, quiche, pastry, cookies, cakes, all are so good.
The tart a quiche servings are accompanied by a small side salad.
I adore the chocolate dome, the cookies (any kind), the rustic fresh fruit individual pies, the sandwiches.
The owner and her husband take a hands on approach and are usually present.
The ordering process is a bit confusing, but the staff are very happy and willing to explain.
You order at the counter, pay at the counter, and take your number, find your table, and they bring you your food. Â You get your own water, napkins, etc.
One complaint I have is that the drinking water isn't as cold as I prefer and no ice is available. Â
You also can carry out your purchases.
I highly recommend Toni's!
LOVE LOVE LOVE this place! Was in Chicago for only a weekend and came here TWICE! The first time I came just to check it out and try some desserts. I tried a chocolate and pistachio macaron (which was free because he accidentally gave it to me instead of the chocolate) and the key lime tart which was delicious! The tart was about 3 inches round instead of the usual wedge shaped tarts. Â It was a pit pricey as I spent about $9 on those 3 things but it was worth it.
The atmosphere is definitely reminiscent of a Parisian cafe. Â Lots of people come here to relax, chit chat and get away from the hustle and bustle of Downtown Chicago. All the people behind the counter are nice and your food comes out fairly quickly.
The second time we went for brunch. My fiance got the roast beef sandwich and I got the bacon and onion quiche and the cheese soup. Â Everything was incredibly fresh and tasty! Â The roast beef was on a baguette and served with a side of salad. Â My quiche was chock full of onions and actual bacon strips! It was very filling. The cheese soup was the best I ever had! They made it with a number of different vegetables and cheeses so it had a really rich flavor.
The coffee and hot chocolate hit the spot for brunch as well. Â As an added bonus, they have tons of outlets where you could charge your iPhone or plug in your laptop.
Check it out! You'll love it.
I'm reviewing this spot from two points of view...the Patisserie (5 stars) and the Café (3 stars)...so overall, I'm going with a 4 star review.
First, the Patisserie: Lovely little space...the décor is adorable and just perfect for a bakery filled with beautiful edible sweets...and the ones we tried were wonderfully decadent.  Overall...5 stars, and I'll definitely be back when I have a sweet tooth or want some special treats for company.
Next, the Café: We went for brunch, and although the food was good, I was extremely disappointed in the portion sizes for the prices charged.  The ham and cheese biscuit was $5.99, and literally was just a biscuit on an empty plate. No side item...not even a garnish. I know we're talking downtown Chicago, but for a café, I thought that was a little pricey, if not downright stingy.  C'mon...throw on some fresh fruit or something! So...although the food was good...I was still hungry after eating, and that has to knock them down to a 3 star rating.
But...if you're looking for pastries and sweets that are yummy, and so pretty they are almost works of art...you can't go wrong with this place.
We were in Chicago for a short visit, Coldplay concert, and asked friends for recommendations. However, my son used Yelp to research for an establishment that would be a good place for breakfast and/or brunch. Well, we all were just thrilled with Toni's! The gentleman behind the counter, manager perhaps, was so very helpful and gracious that we felt like valued regulars. His hospitality was very appreciated.
We shared the quiche, a Croque Monsieur, and  Le Cubain all of which were melt in your mouth delicious. Then we shared a cherry galette as well as some other decadent almond pastry delight. Needless to say, once we find a place we love we tend to revisit and the very next day we went back for, you guessed it, two more Croque  and a special chicken and pesto panini, We were satiated but wish we had room for more pastries.
I look forward to our next visit to Chicago as well as Toni's.
Still love this place.
Went again on Saturday, and finally tried one of their quiches :) The special for the day was broccoli cheddar with a salad for $7.25. It was worth every penny.
I would have licked the plate clean if I had not been in such a fancy place.
I still cannot find anything on their menu that I don't love.
I saw this restaurant while I was riding the bus a week ago and decided to try it out.
The first time I went I only ordered an eclair. It wasn't anything special, slightly underwhelmed by it. The custard and dough were hard, but it was fine overall.
Yesterday was my second visit. I brought a friend with me and we tried their croque monsieurs. It was incredible. I have had many croque monsieurs, in various restaurants in America and France, and this sandwich was great. It was the perfect amount of bread, cheese, and ham. We ordered the sandwichs without any side items and they were filling on their own.
I also ordered a chocolate pastry. It consisted of a chocolate crust, a carmel filling, and a slice of chocolate on top. The pastry was garnished with a few pieces of sea salt. It was amazing as well.
Plus the service is top notch. My friend said she hadn't received service as nice as that from a restaurant before. Plus the decor was pleasant and fit the tone of the french cafe theme.
Please, please, please eat here if you're visiting Chicago or if you live here and haven't been yet. Â
I've eaten here 3 or 4 times and every single time I'm so impressed with the service given by the owner himself (who's wife shares her name with the restaurant). Â He is always around to guarantee every customer has a great experience. Â Most recently he even found my party of 5 special seating arrangements when we couldn't find a spot for all of us to sit for lunch.
I usually order the herb salad with smoked salmon, but their tartines and baguettes are great too. Â Their pasteries and tarts are phenomenal. Â
Toni is the perfect place for a fresh, delightful lunch and the only place of its kind in the loop.
HEAVENLY!
If you are anywhere near the loop-don't miss this gem.
My sister and I tried it for Saturday brunch and loved it.
This charming little spot could have been on any street in Paris. They did a terrific job with the decor. Just enough to say France but not over done.
The owner (Paul) greeted us and explained how his wife (who he clearly adores) is the pastry chef and creator of all the culinary masterpieces. He also came around and asked us how our lunches were and even bussed tables.
The Croque Monsieur was divine- The cheese was melted to perfection and all ingredients were so fresh. The use of European butter was key-I'm not sure why it tastes so much better than ours but, in fact, it is amazing.
The salted caramel /chocolate tart was probably the best dessert I've eaten in a long time. Delicious thick dark chocolate topping a layer of "oozy" (is that a word?) soft caramel and a flaky chocolate tart shell (more butter heaven here.)
The European breakfast is light and filling and comes with coffee. A great deal.
We begged the owner to open a location in LP but he said we'll have to wait a bit. Boo
I have SUCH mixed feelings about Toni. The food and pastries are truly outstanding but the service and overall organization of the shop is borderline infuriating.
First: the good. Toni's salted caramel and chocolate ganache tart is one of the most delicious desserts I've ever eaten. Ever. Smooth, silky caramel topped with decadent dark chocolate ganache in a buttery chocolate cookie crust. All finished off with the tiniest sprinkle of fleur de sel that sets off the richness of the chocolate, sweet burnt sugar of the caramel... oh, it's so good.
Also, their quiche lorraine. Deliciously velvety, custardy eggs, smoky bacon, caramelized onion, and a bit of sharp, salty cheese in buttery, flaky crust is served with a nice salad of mixed greens, tomato, and onion in a tangy vinaigrette.
The bad: Packaging. Toni stinks at packaging their goodies and my meal is usually destroyed by the time I get home. Hot quiche on top of over-dressed greens-- really? I'm left with both soggy crust and wilted greens. A delicate tart banging around the bottom of a paper bag? Nuh uh.
The ugly: Service. Organization of the store. Forgotten items the past two times I've been there. Being unsure of where to order and collect my order. Pastry cases split by the register.
Toni, I really want to love you. But you're gonna have to work out those kinks before I become a regular when my office moves into the neighborhood this spring.
Non. Â Just non. Â
I stopped in to pick up some cookies after 1 p.m. to avoid the lunch crowd, but this place was still bustling and the order process was disorganized. Â I just wanted cookies, but the display case was pretty far away from the registers, and I wasn't sure if I needed to wait in line at the register or even how much a dozen cookies would be. Â
When I finally got someone to help me, she was either inexperienced or just plain shy. Â I could barely hear her over the counter and she was pretty ineffective at answering my questions. Â The cookies selection was abysmal. Â I inquired if they had other cookies in the back and my sales clerk told me that was all that they had left for the week. Â Wait, what?? Â I thought that I hadn't heard her right and I asked if they only bake their items once a week. Â She nodded.
Even though I had wanted FRESH pastries, I decided to have her box up a few cookies anyway. Â When I finally tried them later that night they were not good. Â There was a lack of sweetness, which I can deal with, and also a lack of buttery flavor. Â I'm no expert on French cookies, but I would assume that iced cookies from a French bakery would be loaded with artery clogging flavor. Â I've had cookies from Jewel that taste better. Â
Fin.
I was excited to see this in downtown and the place was amazing looking. I ordered
tuna sandwich - ok, the baguette was super hard
chocolate dome - the ganache inside was separating from the dome, and tasted old
macaroon - very chewy!!!
so disappointed that such expensive pastries taste SO bad that I just tossed everything away!!!
Toni is beyond adorable. Upon walking in with a group we were immediately seated by the owner at a large table during a Friday lunch, and checked on multiple times throughout the meal. You can tell the owners really care about their shop and the experience their customers have.
The setting itself is very French- cute smaller tables, decorations strung about but not overcrowded, and a great menu selection. I had the Breton Baguette (ham, cornichons, gruyere) and it tasted just like a sandwich I'd had in France years ago. Others ordered the panini, soup, and salad which all looked great. Service is fast and friendly and prices are reasonable ($8-10) which you could easily spend somewhere generic for a lower quality meal.
It looks like they do custom cakes and desserts, and feature some in their window display which were a treat to look at. Will definitely be back many more times.
A French patisserie in Chicago, you say? Mais oui! It's easy to miss this cute little cafe as it's sandwiched in between office buildings on Washington between Michigan and Wabash. But there it was--beautiful cakes in the window--confirming that yes, there really is a random French bakery in the Loop.
The cream puff was good and the chocolate cake was decadent and rich, but if I had to recommend just one thing, it would be the phenomenally simple yet delicious eclair. The coffee and cappuccino were well-made. The decor oozed French charm. There was ample seating and prices were reasonable.
The girl behind the counter was nice and helpful and gave us good recommendations. They also serve lunch sandwiches on baguettes. But the pastries alone are worth a visit. Move this patisserie a few blocks north and there'd be a line out the door, so I kind of enjoy the fact that it's a little hidden and off the tourist track. Why just have cupcakes, mes amies, when you can have an assortment of pastries?
I stopped in for lunch on a Friday, and was pleasantly surprised to find that this isn't your run-of-the-mill cafe. Â It has a real European feel to it, except it has good space for seating like an American spot. Â
Everything on the menu sounded wonderful, and looked very good as I glanced at dishes on our neighbors' tables. Â I ordered the croque monsieur, and now I'm in trouble because I can't imagine ordering anything else but that cheesy goodness. Â It was done perfectly in my book.
SInce my lunch was so heavy, I passed on dessert, but they also looked good. Â I'll have to save some room for that next time.
I also really appreciate the owner stopping by our table and saying hi. Â You just don't get that anymore in the city, and I think it's a really nice personal touch.
I was in Chicago on business so I wasn't able to go back and try everything on offer. I got a croque monsieur which was really delicious...tons of cheese on really good bread. I wish the side salad had been bigger but that is a small complaint when everything else was great. Â I love that they serve on real china and you can eat at normal tables at a comfortable pace, without feeling rushed. The staff is really friendly and helpful; someone walks around and makes sure you have what you need (even tho there is no table service) and keeps the tables clear and the chairs organized.
I had a really hard time choosing just one thing to eat so I hope I get to go back to Chicago to visit Toni's again.
A+++
I lived in Paris for some time and this Patisserie is as close to a top notch Parisian Patisserie as one can get this side of the Atlantic.  I have tried the White Chocolate Cake with Raspberry Sauce.  It is  PERFECT in every way, not too sweet, the cake is moist and light. The white chocolate shavings melt in your mouth.  I never thought I would like white chocolate cake and this one wins. Â
I also LOVE cheesecake, therefore on a separate visit, I tried the raspberry chocolate cheesecake. Â The cheesecake was also sheer perfection: not too cheesy/not too sweet and the portion is small enough to prevent one from worrying about the guilt that usually comes from eating an entire slice of (cheesecake factory cheesecake).
All in all, the employees are all delightful, helpful and can attest to the delicious items Toni's has to offer.
P.S. The cupcakes are also perfection, however, I am rarely able to find them unless I visit first thing in the morning.
