Was driving that side of the island on a cruise enjoying the scenery. We got hungry, saw this truck and stopped. Best decision ever! We just got the fish taco plate (2 tacos, corn and pineapple posted a pic) was really really good. The sauce it was cooked in was a sweet chili sauce with huge chunks of chili...i would go back for sure.
Review Source:After an entire morning of hiking the beaches on North Shore we stopped at Tony's to grab some lunch. Â I will agree the price is a bit more than what I am used to paying for a plate of shrimp and rice, but overall it was good. Â We ordered the Flava Shrimp and I believe the Garlic Shrimp whic bot were very flavorful. Â Each plate had a distinct taste to the flavor which I enjoyed. Â
The owners seemed very nice and reminded me of my parents, as we are also from Taiwan and my father is a chef (but in Dallas). Â If I am to go back, I would definitely go back...but please note that they do close early. Â I believe after lunch time (around 3PM, if I remember correctly).
We had the pepper shrimp and garlic shrimp, both were very tasty. Â I thought it's somewhat expensive --- but this is Hawaii ... Â
Shaved Ice was not so good --- it's just shaved ice from a regular ice-shaving machine topped with suspiciously bright colored syrup. Â
The couple that ran this place were very nice people.
I got the garlic plate at $12. It came with less than a dozen shrimp which is my only gripe. HOWEVER, the shrimp comes head on (which I'm a big fan of) its plump and juicy. Â The dish comes with a side of rice and a handfull of shredded cabbage with ketchup. Â He has other items on the menu but I only had the garlic plate and the corn.
The garlic shrimp itself was tasty but not memorable.
Service was awesome once you find Tony. You need to walk up to the truck to order. After you can sit down outside or inside where there are bathrooms in the back and a place to wash your hands.
Make sure you be aloha and give Tony a break, he's one guy in a truck. Â So if you are THAT impatient, don't expect fast service if a bus load of tourists has just been dumped right in front of his truck. Drive down to the next shrimp truck. I believe they get their shrimp from the same farm, but don't quote me.
I'm biased because Tony (if that is his real name) and his family are Taiwanese and cook everything with a slightly Taiwanese bent (which I LOVE) but this shrimp was awesome. I don't know how authentically Kahukuhukuhu it's supposed to be, but they were plump, juicy and smothered in divine garlic sauce, with lots of white rice and cabbage on the side. Not so much a fan of the coconut drinks, but that's because I only like the over-sugared, artificial, Pina Colada-esque taste of coconut.
