One of my favorites in this city. I find myself wanting to come here instead of trying something new a lot. It is pub fare with a twist. The menu is well thought out and creative. There are several accommodations for vegetarians. Most importantly, the beer is outstanding. I love their beer and seem to find something I love on the rotating taps every time I go. Great place to bring visiting friends without spending a boat load.
Review Source:The type of neighborhood eatery that makes you want to move in next door!  I go to the Town Hall Tap every time I'm in the neighborhood and  you should too.
Great selection of brews on tap and always a few new ones on rotation. Â The burgers are predictably great and the place is always busy with families and singles + from around the area. Â While there are many locals who call the THT "home" I've talked it up at work and found that many people from the suburbs make the trek to South Minneapolis for a special meal.... there may be other great options within 10 miles of THT but I've never had a reason to try them.
We live just a few blocks away and frequently head over to Town Hall for a burger and beer. Â Great beer list that is ever changing and their burgers are phenomenal. Â Great prices, great service and they always have some good games up on the TVs. Â It's usually packed so beware, but there are usually some open spots at the bar if you like that (we do). Superb neighborhood spot to get a burger and we will keep visiting Town Hall for years to come.
Review Source:First of all, their Pale Ale is great. I mean, really nice.
And that, is why you get 3 stars instead of 2.
On a nice day the front is wide open allowing for air and movement, but more to the point, I can just imagine how claustrophobic this place will be in the winter when it's busy. Plus, the dude sitting next to me at the bar had to send his chicken sandwich back twice because it was underdone. I know poultry can be pesky, and patrons can be picky, but I decided not to eat.
Place is the Chicago Avenue area version of Town Hall Brewery over on West Bank -- same beers, for the most part, although this one has "guest beers" and Town Hall on West Bank only has their in-house stuff. If you like IPAs, the Masala is really good (probably 3.5 out of 4 stars, if I was rating it that way). The food is average to a little above average. They have a cool kielbasa option that they make in conjunction with ingredients from Seward Co-Op. Last night I had the Brewer Burger with pepper jack, and I definitely thought it was above average. It wasn't mouth-watering or tastebud-defining, but it hit the spot along with the Masala. The atmosphere is good too -- bar doesn't get amazingly crowded for the most part, and there are three TVs, so it's a good place to check out a game if you're interested.
Review Source:I agree with Marisa P.--If I lived here, I'd maybe go again, but I was underwhelmed. Â It's a square room that serves a small selection of beer, serving a very greasy selection of food, with mediocre service. I was one of 4 people at the bar, and if its so painful for you move from standing there doing nothing to serving me a beer, you should get out of the beer serving business.
Nothing special.
The last few times I've been here it's kinda bummed me out. Â The beer is always solid but the food has been pretty mediocre. Â Sunday morning with a group of 4 others we tried out brunch for the first time. Â Three out of five of us ordered the "Benedict's", they came out served on dry biscuits, not English muffins. Â And 2 of the 6 eggs were hard-boiled, not poached. Â Had they run out of muffins or is this simply how the Benedict's are served? Â The menu doesn't elaborate so a warning would have been appreciated so a different choice could have been made. Â The Tuesday "Kill The Keg" sounds appealing though so I will definitely be back...
Review Source:I had an amazing lunch here. Â We started off with fried pickles. When the server brought them out, he felt like we didn't get enough so he brought us another order for free. Â I had chicken breast sandwich, I forgot its name on the menu. It was so good and juicy. It was huge too. I would share it next time. I was really pleased. They have great beer there too!
Review Source:I really like the tap. Â They have good food, and one of my relatives is a VERY picky eater (she basically re-arranges an entire menu item). Â The staff is patient and handles her requests with class, so thats definetely a plus.
Food is good and affordable, atmosphere is relaxing and friendly.
I've heard good things about this place, but after being there, I wasn't really impressed, actually I was quite underwhelmed.
I went here for breakfast last Sunday to meet some friends and I was impressed with the location, appearance, and overall impression of the bar and restaurant.
They have nice big booths, a beautiful old style bar, and an overall nice atmosphere.
I ordered their German Lager (I forgot the name) it was decent, nothing too special however. I ordered the Chicago (steak and egg breakfast) I got my meal and it looked good until I noticed my hash browns were lacking in the brown department. I got a large pile of potato shavings that had been barely warmed up on the griddle. My steak and eggs were done they way I like, but I was upset about my warm potatoes and the fact I paid a dollar extra for 1 piece of toast. Maybe their dinner is better, I'll give them another shot sometime.
Venturing inside, it looks just like how you'd expect a beer tavern to look like. Lots of wood, your typical beer signs decorate the walls, there are booths, tables and tall chairs. The one thing I wasn't expecting was a host/hostess booth right up front. That's certainly not typical in the bar scenes, but it's nice, you won't have to try to flag down a waitress.
The service was fast, consistent, and capable. The food came out at a reasonable amount of time, piping hot. Â The walleye sandwich was good, not the best I ever had, but it was good. The fries were cooked just right, crispy and light. Unfortunately I only had a few pieces of the fries because it was just completely over-salted, over-seasoned!
I mean, if you're a salt fiend, it'll probably work for you, but really, it felt like I was ingesting a solid roll of salt. I'm the kind of person, who loves their fries...so it was sad to not get to finish my fries. Next time I'll ask to see if I could get the fries unseasoned and unsalted.
The food seemed pretty expensive for a beer tavern...averaging around 10-12$ for their burgers, sandwiches etc. I was expecting the prices to be more around 7-8$ (sort of the reason I stopped in, because I thought it would be a cheap bite).
Local, neighborhood pub. Â Hard to spot since there isn't a big sign out front. Â Had to park around the block, but it was March Madness and the neighborhood was pretty busy on a Saturday night.
Nice beer selection and friendly environment. Â Thought it'd be more sports pub, but they had only a few TVs over the bar, so not overwhelmingly loud with sports (and I like that!).
Ordered the Hot Damn Burger and it was pretty good! Â Had a little kick and good flavor. Â Liked the jalapeno peppers on it.
The servers were great, friendly and funny. Â I would definitely go back and try some of the appetizers.
My husband and I love this place! It is a great location in South Minneapolis and very close to where we live. They have a great rotating tap selection, something new to try every time we go! The servers are very knowledgeable on the taps and are a great resource. The food is great too, I love anything with the "tap sauce." The pub pretzels are awesome!
Review Source:We went on New Year's Eve around 9. They were busy but we found two chairs at the bar. Service was good. The staff seemed happy. The food is great. I suggest the beer cheese soup and soft pretzels. My husband suggests beer and lots of it.
Would get five stars for a full bar, which is no fault of their own. I'm sure it has something to do with the city.
Finally got the chance to stop in at the Town Hall Tap last week for lunch with my Dad. Â I'm a huge fan of its parent establishment, the Town Hall Brewery at 7 Corners, so I was pretty excited. Â Town Hall Tap is conveniently located at 48th & Chicago right next to Pepito's. Â Heads up though as there isn't any noticeable signage, and it is fairly small, so it is easy to miss.
The space itself, again, is pretty small but very quaint. Â Lots of wood with some awesome vintage beer signs adorning the walls. Â It was the day after Christmas so it wasn't horribly busy and we got to choose our seating. Â The menu itself is not terribly extensive, but it offers a nice array of apps, salads, burgers and sandos. Â For starters my Dad and I both ordered a cup of the chili. Â Now, the server warned us that it was spicy, but whoa, it was pretty darn hot. Â It supplies the kind of burn that builds from bite to bite. Â Don't get me wrong, it was still quite good and I enjoy spicy food, but if I didn't have a nice tall glass of their Masala Mama IPA to put the fire out, I would have been in a world of hurt. Â For my entree I ordered the reuben. Â I'm a bit of a reuben connoisseur so I'm fairly picky, especially when it comes to the corned beef. Â While the bread, kraut, sauce and cheese were all very good, the corned beef was horribly dry and tough. Â This ruined the sandwich for me. Â I was picking it out of my teeth the rest of the day.
All in all, I enjoyed my first trip to the Town Hall Tap. Â I'm sure I will return if only to down some pints of the liquid happiness they certainly have a plethora of.
Update: We have continued to routinely hit up Town Hall Tap almost every time we've had a date night (we're creatures of habit, I suppose!) over the past 6+ months. We had one experience where the food was not good, but that seems to have been a fluke. Every other time we've been thrilled with the burgers, and I dream about the java porter (maybe I'm remembering the name wrong, it's the coffee beer...) on a more frequent basis than I'd like to admit. If I were willing to stray from the java porter, they have an excellent guest beer selection. This place has slowly crept pretty high up on our favorites list!
(Plus, in the summer pups are allowed on the patio - but be warned, our dog jumped up on the chair as he does on our patio at home  and his toenail got stuck in the metal grating on the seat of the chair and he freaked out - poor guy!)
I LOVE the Town Hall Tap. I've been here probably 4-5 times since I discovered it this summer. I live very close to it's predecessor, The Town Hall Brewery, and enjoy the THT even better.
Try the Java Porter, very good beer. I haven't had a beer there I didn't like, but the Java Porter was a great rich, smooth beer. The Wild Rice/Cranberry salad is seriously probably one of the best salads I've ever had and though I'm not a huge salad eater at restaurants it is really hard for me to try anything else there. The Turtle Bread you can get with it is phenomenal as well.
Also, the beer cheese soup. It is vegetarian, which is wonderful-- you don't have to abstain because of chicken broth if you aren't a meat-eater, and it doesn't taste any different. It is very creamy and rich, and a bowl was definitely filling for dinner. My boyfriend usually gets the pork wings, which he finishes in about two minutes because he says they are so good.
The only reason I've not giving them 5 stars is because there is usually a significant wait on the weekends, and there is no good standing room--made even more difficult in the winter when their cool garage doors are closed.
If I lived closer, I would go way more often. Â I have friends near THT and have ventured over a few times over the past few months. Â This last week we went to celebrate local beer - all the taps were from Minnesota breweries. Â I really liked this local touch. Â Personally I'm not a beer drinker but they had a decent wine selection to keep me content. Â All of my friends (avid beer drinkers) loved the selections! Â The food is my favorite out of any "tap" type restaurant in the cities. Â I went with the chicken salad sandwich on a pretzel roll and was in heaven. Â It also came with a shareable portion of fries. Â
The icing on the cake is the atmosphere. Â In the summer there are a few outdoor tables and they open these large doors to bring the breeze in. Â This creates an overall casual fun feel to the place. The servers were great and not super fussy. Â If you are in the area for a causal lunch/dinner I highly recommend trying THT.
The beers are delicious and the food is solid. Â The place is comfy with a lot of wood and great salvaged beer signs to check out. Â The garage doors on the front of the place let the outside in. Â They've got TVs to keep you up with the sports going on but it's not overly saturated with them. Â The service is pretty good.
The Tap is a welcome addition over here, especially when attending events at the Parkway. Â Everything's pretty reasonably priced and the quality is superb. Â Make sure to order a Town Hall beer!
Went with some friends for brunch and very glad we did. Â Delish mimosa to start off with followed by 4 amazing brunch entrees. Â We had the banana french toast, breakfast sandwich, egg scrambler, and pulled pork with eggs on a tortilla.
Everyone ate as much as they could and a few joined the clean plate club.
The place is a bit hidden but we were able to find it.
Now I need to go back for some beers!
Say it with me, Parmesan Jerk Wings. Parmesan Jerk Wings! This should become a household rub for all things wing related. I never would have thought of this combination on my own, you da man, Town Hall Tap. The wings were cooked to a crispy perfection and mashed wonderfully with the side of bleu cheese for dipping and my Deschutes Stout for drinking.
I get a little crazy every time I hit up The Tap trying to decide which burger to get. I have tried three of their burgers so far and have been obsessed with them all. I keep trying new ones just to see if they have the ability to make bad food. Apparently they don't. Last time I was there I had The Heidelburger which has Tillamook cheddar, onions and baco bits smothering the ground beef. The Heidelburger came with an excellent sized portion of lightly seasoned fries. The one downfall of this place is the temp of the fries, they never seem hot enough for me, they are always luke warm.
If you're looking for great wings, burgers and a cute neighborhood bar all wrapped up in one, The Town Hall Tap is for you.
Side note-They serve Town Hall Brewery's beers but also have other beers you can choose from, which means you don't have to only drink their brewed beer like some other breweries. I'm looking at you Herkimer.
Yes, yes, yes. Â And yes, please.
Great atmosphere, a few TVs for those who want to watch the game, but not so many to be distracting. Â The front walls of the bar are garage doors, so on those summer days where the weather is perfect they open them up to Chicago Ave. to bring the outside in. Â It's terrific.
Great beer list. Â They rotate Town Hall Tap beers but more often than not seem to have the same 4 available. It's slightly disappointing because I LOVe the Town Hall Tap Scotch Ale and that is almost never on the list. Â Their rotating guest beers are always fun to try, and the servers usually know enough about each of them to be able to point you in the right direction if you're not familiar with what they carry.
Great food. Â Order the jalapeno stuffed pretzels and tap sauce, then try to tell me you don't think about them as you lay in bed at night before falling asleep. Â You do. Â It's ok. Â Don't lie about it. Â We're all friends here. Â The ragamuffin chicken sandwich is a perfect fried chicken sandwich. Â Crispy, peppery, and always perfectly cooked. Â The rag top (ragamuffin dipped in wing sauce and covered in blue cheese) reaffirmed my faith in a good buffalo chicken sandwich. Â After years of not ordering them because they were usually disappointing, this got me back on the wagon. Â Or off the wagon, I don't know how that saying goes. Â Regardless, I'll eat this one again. Â Their fries are ok, nothing special. Â
A great little spot for beers and good bar food though.
I've already reviewed the Town Hall Brewery but I couldn't go without giving this place it's deserved 5 stars as well.
I actually prefer the tap because of it's neighborhood feel, kind of "cheers" like or something like that.
Like the brewery the tap has a great and above average menu. I absolutely love the black bean burger. This is not some frozen crappy veg burger they just tossed on the menu for good measure. This thing is massive and probably the best bean burger I've ever had.
The beer selection is very similar to the brewery which should be pretty obvious. They always have something on cask, which for me is one of those things I look for in a good beer place, very few places have casks on hand.
Not only do they have their TH beers on tap, they also have other guest beers their which is pretty awesome. Not that they're needed with the great TH selection but it's nice to see.
At last, this review would not be complete if I didn't strongly urge you to try their Parkway Java Porter. This is my favorite porter by far. Super smooth milk chocolaty and with hints of coffee. Added bonus points for being relatively low ABV at somewhere around 5% or less so you can slam how ever many you want! Absolutely amazing.
We stumbled across this place thinking we were at Adrian's Pub but it was a fortunate accident because the food was great, atmosphere fabulous, and server top-notch!
It was a beautiful night and they have the garage doors so even though we sat inside, it felt like we were partially outside. The food we ordered was:
Deep fried pickles with jalapenos and cream cheese with a chutney sauce.
A chicken salad sandwich on a pretzel roll.
A honey mustard chicken sandwich with bacon and provolone.
The pickles were interesting, I liked them. I did not like the chutney but that was probably just more taste than anything. To me the dip tasted like pureed prunes.
My friend said the pretzel roll was really yummy, grilled perfectly with just a little crunch on the outside, while soft on the inside.
My honey mustard chicken sandwich was really good and the fries were perfectly done.
Our server was the best!! Glasses never were empty for more than a minute at the most. She was pleasant, attentive, and oh, how I wish there were more servers like her out there!!!
Check this place out if you are ever in the Nokomis area of Minneapolis, you won't be disappointed!
I really, really wanted to like this place. I miss Sherlock's Home and the idea of a gastropub that brews their own variety of craft beers. But, alas, it just was not to be for me.
Service - While I was waiting for my dining partner to arrive, the waitress came by and asked me if I wanted to order a drink. I told her I wasn't sure and that I would wait until my dining partner arrived. Apparently that pissed her off since we got very inattentive service after that. She didn't bring napkins and silverware (we had to grab them from the host's stand), came by very perfunctorily after the meal showed up to ask how our food was, and we never saw her again until we were ready to settle up. It was busy, but not *that* busy. Dislike.
Beer -- I had an IPA, he ordered the java porter. They both were quite good. You can really smell and taste the coffee notes in the porter. I was disheartened that a place that serves both beer and hard cider did not offer snake bites on their drink menu!
Food - It was already almost 10, so we didn't order an appetizer. I'm glad we didn't order the brie curds based on the descriptions of other reviewers. I was surprised by the fairly limited menu. There are five or six burgers and eight or nine sandwiches. He had the Heidelburger, I had the Blockbuster. I was underwhelmed by the burger, it was okay... but nothing special. It said the burger was "stuffed with onions". I didn't find that to be the case. The sandwich was taste, but also fairly sparse in terms of the amount of meat provided. The fries were hot and crispy.
Ambiance - Loud, crowded, fun. Lots of beer memorabilia on the walls which was very cool. As other reviewers noted, the bathrooms are single stall bathrooms. The woman's room has a lever handle and newer hardware, as it should, but the mens' room is not accessible -- it has a round knob that does not lock,, and a locking slide bolt that is installed far too high for ADA. I can't believe that passed a code inspection.
Overall... the inattentive service and the okay food makes this a place that I wouldn't go out of my way to go to in the future. If I am in the neighborhood, I might stop by, but it isn't a "must go to" destination -- at least for me. If I could give it 2 1/2 stars, I would, but I since my experience was less than "A-OK", two stars it is.
Yum! The Heidelburger is awesome! Had a slider version at the Food & Wine show which was great so went in today to have the real deal. Everything I have tried so far is good though it would be nice to see more salads or lighter fare. But it's a pub so it's fine, just me.
Good selection of beer outside of Town Hall beer which I appreciate. The Masala IPA is a favorite though.
Cozy neighborhood spot. It will be fun to sit there when the garage doors open.
Finally made it here - after a broomball game.
I was a little disappointed in the beer selection - its decent - almost larger - but definitely caters to the IPA crowd, which I am only a fair weather member - I much prefer the Belgians. Â So def not as many as the town hall brewery itself, but not a bad selection, just not what I was looking for at the time. . .
The sandwich however was pretty darn good - i got the cuban sandwich and it was pretty great - french fries were delish and we also tried the brie cheese curds with blackberry sauce - wowsers - it was delicious. Â
Its definitely a smaller space and the tables filled up fast for a saturday afternoon at 2pm .. .
We just got back from a nice dinner and drinks from the Town Hall Tap. Â They had a great selection of beer in their bar. Â The ambiance was terrific and it felt like a comfortable place to have dinner. Â It seemed pretty energetic and the wait staff was very friendly.
The food value is good. Â We both had a 1/2 LB Angus Burger and they were excellent. I tried a Marmalade Sky Pale Ale with dinner and it was cold (as a beer should be) and it was excellent as well.
I would definitely recommend this eatery to anyone in the area. Â It is nice to know it is there. Â We really needed a nice place like this in the area.
The Good:
As others have said, the interior is great. Love the vintage beer signs. Very good selection of in-house beers--I had the Marmalade Pale Ale. They also had Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout which will be my selection next time. The Tap House burger and fries were delicious--and huge!
The Bad:
For MN, it's not that cold out yet--34 degrees. However, the place was really chilly inside. My girlfriend and I had what we thought was a great seat near the front of house. But it was so cold with people opening and closing the door. Even near the back of the place I could feel the chill.
Check your tab closely and watch out for mysterious up-charges: the burger was supposed to come with a side of "Tap Sauce"-- when it didn't, we asked for some but got charged for it. Onions and tomato were extra, too. C'mon, that should be included!!
Overall, service was good and food and beer were good. A few minor quibbles, but we'll be back.
The the opening of the Town Hall Tap has been long awaited for the South Minneapolis folk, itching for some decent beer. Â Well, itch no more, The Tap is open and everything you hoped it would be!
The dining area is gorgeous! Â Mostly made of wood and covered in vintage beer parifinalia, you have your choice between tables or booths which all (or most) look to be antique, refurbished furniture. Complete with wood floors, you almost get a cabinesque-dive bar-old Euro feel to the restaurant. Â The bar itself was also refurbished (1890's, Ireland) and very fitting for the environment!
The beer list gives you more options than you need! Â (Never a problem.) Â They have a good selection of beer from within and outside the U. S. Â They are also carrying some original, hand-crafted beers from Town Hall Brewery. Â The house Java Porter for you coffee/dark beer lovers wraps all of your vices into one drink, supported by Sovereign Grounds coffee. Â If you like hoppy beers, try the Marmalade Sky-citrusy and refreshing.
The food was great! Â The fried pickles appetizer comes in a close second to the brie bites-my favorite. Â I also had a Heidleburger that won't keep your arteries clean, but sure tastes delicious! Â Word has it you should also try the fried chicken sandwich, the homemade Reuben, or get the beer cheese soup in a bread bowl from Turtle Bread Co.
Service was good! Â Since it is new, they are still working out some kinks. Â However, the service staff was very pleasant and efficient, and the manager came around to check on our experience.
The bathrooms are clean, but single only, so plan accordingly-there are always lines.
This is a must try for South Minneapolis folk. Â Quality beer and bar food! Â Good Atmosphere! Â I'm not really sure what else you would want?
