I enjoyed our dinner here so much last night.
We had a groupon.... Which was 2 glasses of wine, 2 salads, 2 entrees, and a dessert. There were no restrictions on it. Our waitress was so nice ... She was serving most of the tables there, and was so prompt and quick with requests.
Salads were awesome. I had a pomodoro gorganzola with balsamic  dressing, my husband had the Caesar.
For the entrees, we has steak and I had braccioli. They were good... Came to the table piping hot.
For dessert we had creme brulee. It was ok.
Overall the food was 4 stars, but the awesome service and relaxed environment makes it worth coming back to.
I was hoping that Trattoria Trullo had improved, so a friend and I tried it again last night. The place was pretty full but people were leaving, so we waited about 5 minutes for a table by the windows on Lincoln.
The waitress arrived promptly and we ordered a glass of wine, Calamari Fritti, and Ravioli alla Vodka to share. The calamari was OK but needed salt. The ravioli arrived cold, and we sent it back. About 10 minutes later the ravioli arrived warm, but not hot. We didn't feel like waiting again, so we ate it. The flavor was good, and probably would have been more tasty if it was truly hot.
The last time I went to Trattoria Trullo I had a mediocre meal and experience. This time was the same. I don't think I'll go back.
My love and I came here with 2 of our best friends using a group on and went ALL OUT.. We started out with the mussels and the masti (grilled octopus/squid/shrimp) that were outstanding, so good in fact that we ordered a second round of the masti..
Our entrees which ranged from 2 different preparations of veal, grilled chicken and a spicy seafood pasta were all absolutely amazing.. We finished our dinner with the bread pudding and the flour-less chocolate cake, limincello and espresso that exceeded my expectations. My boyfriend is a  bread pudding "connoisseur" and he was very impressed.
Our server, Carmella, was just wonderful. She was personable, funny, knowledgable and made our already great experience, the greatest.
What a great experience we had last Saturday. Â I purchased a groupon for two salads, two entrees, desert, and two glasses of wine. Â The decor is nothing special, light wood beams and floor, pretty open in the dinning room with plenty of seating. Â It was not overly crowded. Â We were able to get reservations five hours before dinner at 8:30 on a Saturday. I did not have high expectations going into this, I was wrong, completely blown away. Â
First, we told the server that we had a Groupon, he said "Say no more" and broke it down for us. Â The Groupon said "house wine" Â he told us we could choose anything on the menu that was served by the glass......BONUS! They had one of my GF's favorite wines!
The salads were great. Â I had the Romana, hard to mess up but very crisp and the thick slices of Parmesan were great. Â The lady had her favorite, Caprese. Â I personally do not like Caprese but she said it was excellent.
The main course was why I gave this place five stars. Â My GF ordered some Risotto con Porcini and Mascarpone, she loved it, Â I tried a bite and agreed. Â I opted for the special, Lobster/Crab Gnocchi, Â holy hell it was good. Â It was the perfect portion, tons of lobster meat and spinach. Â The best gnocchi I have had in years.
I was really excited when they had strawberry Creme Brulee for desert. Â I am not a fan of Italian deserts so I made the mistake of ordering French desert at an Italian restaurant, it was pretty terrible. Â
Even though the desert was inedible, I am not going to knock them down a star because the food and waitstaff were that exceptional. Â Great food trumps all, five stars.
I have been to Trattoria Trullo several times now and have never had a bad experience.
In general we have dined here with one variation of an online discount or another, and we were always treated with the same courtesy and service as any full paying customer, which is not a general rule amongst restaurants who issue such offers. Â The food has always been fresh, well prepared, and very flavorful. Â
My personal favorite is the Grigliata Mista appetizer. Â Their salads, pizzas and entrees are wonderful as well. Â
I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anybody looking for a good Italian food experience, due not only their food but to the great service as well.
My boyfriend and I have been to this place many times. Â Each time, we were satisfied with our meals. Â Nothing fancy, just really good food. Â For the price you pay, it is a great deal.
Regarding one reviewer's comment about the owner being drunk. Â I believe that is an unfortunate misunderstanding. Â We have talked to the owner a couple of times - he is indeed short and bald; and he is a nice and serious kind of man. Â He does not drink. Â Unsure why the waiter said that the drunk guy was the owner. Â Perhaps, he meant "the owner of the building"? Â
If you like Italian food, check this one out. Â You won't regret it!
Trullo now has gluten free pizza.  It's not on their menu, so you have to ask for it.  They only have one size (10"), and it is AMAZING.  I always order the "Trullo" pizza, which is  has provala cheese, cerignola olives and barese sausage.  The gluten free crust is thin, buttery and has the prefect texture.  Highly recommended.
Review Source:I must preface that I am not a prude and I am far from being the quietest of people. And a girl with a mohawk and piercings is not likely to be offended easily.
This rating is purely based on the behavior of the "co-owner" and his skanks, oh I mean friends. The food was delicious and wonderfully prepared. I would say what we ordered, but the owner does not deserve any more business.
Decided to use a groupon for a date night. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by a drunken screech from the bar. Was that a screech owl or a dying parakeet? Oh no, that was some drunk, middle aged, skank who was yelling at the top of her lungs with her fellow skanks. Excuse me, I thought I was at a nice restaurant on lincoln square and not a frat bar on rush/division.
After enduring the obnoxious noise throughout our salad, the server asked how everything was, to which I replied "Oh the food would be great if it weren't for the drunken woman at the bar." Our server apologized and explained that it was the co-owner's friends who were drunk with him at the bar. I understood it wasn't the prick in suspenders making the noise, he was obviously trying to keep it cool to get laid, but it was, and I quote, "the loud bitch in the pink sweater."
The server moved us to the back of the restaurant with other patrons. I spoke with several patrons who were as offended as I was, and we all agreed we would not return because of the owner's behavior and how he allowed this to happen. It's ridiculous to hear servers throughout the night apologize to their tables because there's nothing they can do otherwise they would be fired. More so, for patrons to apologize to their dinner companions and vow never to return.
Throughout the night, a parade of drunk people from the bar to the bathrooms interrupted our dinner. I had to constantly remind myself not to speak my mind and embarrass my fiance by starting a fight. I'm not at a metal concert, nor am I wearing my combat boots, but I would have loved to kicked these people in the teeth for their behavior.
Guess what, you lost at least 4 tables vowing never to return.
We gave our server a hefty tip. Not the server's fault for his boss's ridiculous behavior. I'm glad we had a groupon and didn't pay $80+ for this experience. It's unfortunate because we loved the food and service, but shit if that owner ruined the whole experience.
-- updated from their facebook page--
I had sent the following message to the restaurant which the owner replied to and deleted shortly after posting:
My fiance and I just had the worst experience at your restaurant. It's unfortunate that the owner was so drunk with his drunk friends that several patrons, including myself, vowed never to return. Is it customary to allow your friends to become belligerently drunk and scream throughout the restaurant? Or are you (yes you drunk owner with suspenders) that desperate to get laid that you'll allow this behavior in your restaurant?
Trattoria Trullo - Chicago::: listen my name is giovanni de nigris i dont drink i am bold whit glass i was not at rest.. the guy at bar was the landlord of the bulding before you make statement make shore what you say you come back meet me and than you see and make comment dont be ignorant and no respect because if yuo know me ..you going to apoligize or stay what you are because the customer they know me very well about my proffesional and beahvor ciao giovanni
My reply::: We were told by staff that the owner was drunk at the bar, and by their dismay, we the patrons were going to believe them. What is disrespectful is how customers were subjugated to this obnoxious behavior and how you, Giovanni, tolerate this behavior regardless if he is a landlord or co-owner. Furthermore, how instead of apologizing for the behavior, which is the word obnoxious is pale in comparison to what took place by the screeching and yelling and stumbling of drunk women at your bar and the "landlord" and women screaming "shots" that you continue the unprofessional behavior by your lack of rapport and yes, unprofessionalism.
Your response is absolutely appalling and obviously reflective of your lack of care, ignorance, and least of all pride in the service your restaurant is providing regardless if you're present or not. Never have I heard so many servers continuously apologize for the "owner's" behavior to their tables and them state that "there's nothing we can do since he co-owns the restaurant", nor have I heard so many patrons also apologize to their dinner companions for choosing your restaurant. Despite the delicious meal, my fiance and I also regretted our choice in your restaurant and your reply confirms our decision not to return and to tell our friends and <a href="http://yelp.com">http://yelp.com</a> of the horrible experience, with your updated reply.
I've been to Trattoria Trullo several times, usually on Sunday afternoon. The pizzas are great, the service always attentive and friendly, and each time I've had the fresh cheese appetizer, which is off the menu, and mind-blowingly delicious. We asked for a drink my husband had in Northern Italy, and they nailed it. I love the ambiance, it really has the feel of a trattoria in Italy. I don't understand any negative reviews, as this place makes me feel like I'm in Italy again, truly. Â And the ladies room is WEIRD (in a good way). That is all.
Review Source:Loved this place!!! Â Like some of the writers below, we will now surely become regulars. Â The food, the service (our waiter "Marian" was fantastic), the reasonably priced wine list, the fun atmosphere... I could go on and on. Â We first shared an Insalate Caprese which was good but slightly small. Â For entrees, I had the Chicken Parm and it was delicious; My companions had the Orchiette con Bracchiiole and Stuffed shells with Meatballs in a red sauce, both of which were also fantastic. Â For desert, we ordered Limoncellos (which Marian then told us would be on the house) and shared a beautiful Tiramisu. Â My only knock on the food was that my side of Spaghetti Marinara (which came with the Chicken) was just average; I tend to like a slightly sweeter sauce. Â Everything else was "molto bene" and we'll be back in a flash.
Side Note: Â We saw that they have a great private room for future party planning..
I went to Trattoria Trullo for lunch the other day with my parents, who were visiting from out of town. We were walking around Lincoln Square and just happened to be standing outside of Trattoria Trulla when we decided that it was time for a meal, so we went in, were quickly seated and handed menus.
The service was great. Our waiter was friendly and attentive, but not overbearing. Water glasses were quickly refilled and finished plates were promptly removed.
The food, however, was just okay. I love Italian food, and both the menu and my meal left something to be desired. I had taken a look at their menu online the week before and was a little excited when we decided to try Trattoria Trullo, but I had looked at the dinner menu, not the lunch menu. Although the prices were very reasonable, there weren't too many options for lunch. My mother and I had the fettuccini bolognese and my father ordered the ravioli. The pasta was cooked perfectly, but both sauces were...well, they weren't terrible, but they weren't very flavorful. I was a bit disappointed.
Pleasantly surprised by the food. Probably the best seafood salad I've eaten in a long time. I think the fresh seafood was the main reason for this, but the olive oil was really delicious, too. I had the ravioli with vodka sauce, and it was delicious. My dining partner had linguine with clams and shrimp. I wanted to drink his broth! Instead we dipped our still-warm bread into it. Nice wine selection. Will definitely be back.
Review Source:I've known about Trattoria Trullo even before it was featured on Check Please a couple of years ago. Â I have friends in Evanston, and I remember them telling me about this trattoria when it was there. Â I'm not sure how many years ago it moved to Chicago, but I've always meant to go there, even though it's a bit out of my own neighborhood.
5 of us went, all first timers, and we are all 5 ready to become regulars. Â I love neighborhood restaurants like this, with the warm brick interior walls, perfect lighting - like right out of Puglia in Italy, the place of origin of chef/owner Giovanni.
We started out with the olive and taralli appetizer. Â The taralli are these round, crunchy, savory circles of deliciousness. Â The olives were spectacular and huge. Â Two kinds, both red and green, crisp and full of flavor. Â We also split a Trullo Pizza as an appetizer, thin crust, delicious Barese sausage, and a perfectly crispy yet chewy crust. Â Barese sausage is thinner than what I usually find with Italian sausage, with a subtle flavor that's really terrific.
We ordered away, and tasted from each others plates. Â Several pastas and salads, all excellent. Â I have no hesitation to give this comfortable restaurant, with all of the homemade Italian goodness you would normally only find in Italy, the full 5 stars. Â I can't wait to return, and I'm hungry just thinking about it.
My husband and I have dined here three times and we are planning to make this restaurant our go to spot for exceptional Italian!! The food is outstanding. The ambiance is classy and inviting. The service is attentive. I cannot explain in words how good the food is!! Okay I can....... The food is first class, filling and it makes your taste buds dance;)
Review Source:Solid Italian spot on the square. On a lovely summer night, this place served as a perfect date night spot for me and my lovely friend. The crowd was intimate - small group of friends and dates. But don't let it fool you - this place is big. The backroom can easily fit a large group. So if you're looking for an Italian place for a group - look no further.
Their lunch menu seemed very reasonably priced with excellent options. Unfortunately, it wasn't lunch. So we settled for the dinner menu, which had just as excellent options but with a higher price tag. Still not bad for Italian. I ordered the linguine with clams and my friend got the Ricotta in tomato basil sauce with meatball. We munched on overly baked bread and olive oil while waiting for the food.
Our waitress brought the food out, and upon seeing the portion, my dinning companion gave me a disgusted look: "what is this? How am I gonna get full?" Somehow we are so accustomed with huge plate of pasta or any other kind of unnecessarily unhealthy food, thus making the normal portion here seems small. But I told my friend to finish dinner first, and if the portion is really small, desert on me. The food was hot and good. I loved the pasta and they didn't skimp on the clams. My friend's pate was filled with cheese and delicious tomato basil sauce. Of course, after barely finished our dinner, we decided that desert is unnecessary and the portion was fine. The waitress could have been a little better as she barely checked on us while we were there. Our busboy was extremely efficient and attentive, I wished the tip had gone to him instead - he refilled my water more than 5 times during dinner, cleaned the plate up moments after we finished, and refilled our bread, which was mediocre. So I took one star off for the waitress and one off for the bread, but add one on for the busboy. I'm a fan!
The first time I came here was for the prix fixe Thanksgiving dinner. The food was excellent & the turkey was tender & juicy. (All this time I'd thought I didn't like turkey. It turns out that I had just never had it prepared correctly.)
Since then, this has become a regular spot for romantic meals with my sweetie. The service is very attentive & the atmosphere is usually quiet (except on days when Euro 2012 soccer is on, like today). I highly recommend the ravioli alla vodka.
We've been walking past this place for years but had never stopped in. We gave it a try this weekend and the wife and I were impressed. We got a table outside on a perfect summer evening which helped the dining experience right from the start. They also open up the front of restaurant on nice days which gives the place an airy ambiance. The inside seating seemed very comfortable as well.
We started with a prosciutto, melon and dried fig appetizer which was very good.
My entree was the linguine and clams in white wine which was delicious and my wife had the special of homemade pasta in a pesto sauce with lobster which was also excellent.
Waitstaff was attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. No tap beer but a decent selection of imports in bottles. We will be back.
Not sure what happened to this place. Â The food used to be really good. Â The server was nice, the food took way too long for what we ordered and the food was just blah. Â I couldn't even eat my dish because it was just weird (looking and tasting). Â The pasta was like plastic and the sauce tasted like it was Ragu or Prego. Â My boyfriend likened it to Chef Boyardee. Â He wasn't crazy about what he ordered either. Â
They used to have a fantastic dish on the menu from when I had last been there several years ago. Â It was so good that I remembered it and was hoping to order it again. Â It's fine that they changed their menu but it was a serious downgrade and not at all worth what they were charging. Â Won't be back.
Let me start with saying i ordered delivery. Â Maybe the experience would have been different dining in. Â That being said, this food is not worth the prices they are charging.
I got a "Vitello Marsala" which cost me $21.75, a reasonable price for a quality item. This however was not at all quality!!! Â First of all how in the world can you charge over $20 for a dish and send it in a cheap ass container. Â They use these containers for the $1.50 slices!!!! The cheap flimsy container started spilling the food (juices) all inside the bag. The chicken was soft, but the whole meal was drenched in water (juices) definitely not worth it. Â GET BETTER CONTAINERS!!!! IT WILL ONLY COST YOU AN EXTRA 0.15 PER CONTAINER!!!!!!!!!
Yes they do give bread, but good luck trying to separate the pieces. The bread was so hard it felt like it had been sitting out for days. Â
You might just want to dine-in, delivery is a waste!
Me and a friend had plans to get together for coffee at noon last Sunday. Â We met up in Lincoln Square and quickly decided to do lunch instead of coffee and both agreed on Trattoria Trullo.
Our server Anne Marie was fantastic and put up with our antics all afternoon. Â What started out as a little coffee outing with a friend quickly turned into a wine and appetizer fest. Â We had so much fun and Anne Marie was so gracious. Â
For starters, we had the Bruschetta and another appetizer which I don't recall the name of. Â But it was tomatoes with Buratta (?) cheese which was so delicious that we had to order another appetizer with the same kind of cheese on it. Â This time we ordered it with Arugula which actually was not on the lunch menu but Anne Marie had suggested it because she new how much we were raving about that deliciously creamy cheese but we weren't sure if we should do a salad instead. Â So hence, the suggestion of ordering the one with the cheese and Arugula was like the best of both worlds! Â Kudos to Anne Marie for that suggestion. Â The food was all just delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed everything that we ate.
Now for the fun and naughty part, my friend and I consumed three bottles of Sauvignon Blanc and had a couple more glasses a la carte. (ok, I THINK we had three bottles but it might have been four). Â The wine was just as delicious as the food. Â And as already said, thanks to Anne Marie for providing two drunkards with fantastic customer service. Â We had a blast!
One of the best restaurants in Lincoln Square!
I have never had a bad meal at this place for lunch or dinner. I personally enjoy sitting outside in the summer, just to people watch and catch a few rays of sunlight on a warm day while enjoying a delicious meal. They also do great with large parties, sometimes closing off one section in the enclosed space to make room for a more private atmosphere.
Great wine selection! Great food. Sometimes there are Groupon deals associated with this restaurant. In fact, last time I was here, most other tables were using them.
I recommend the prosciutto and melon or the insalata caprese for an appetizer. The vodka ravioli is perfect for those who are vegetarian, complete with a light cream vodka sauce that compliments the pasta well. For those who are meat eaters, I recommend the Orecchiette con Bracciole or the Vitello alla Marsala, which tastes better than anything my mother has attempted to try regarding Italian food. Also try the desserts, including the cannoli and the tiramisu.
The servers are helpful and offer suggestions on what to try.
Do definitely try the prosciutto and melon, though.
I discovered Trattoria Trullo through Groupon. Â I bought a deal for dinner for two. Â I had not trouble getting a reservation on a Saturday night. Â The overall experience was good. Â The waitstaff was friendly, and the atmosphere was nice - very rustic Italian.
The food was just average. Â I love Italian food, and although I don't have any specific complaints about Trattoria Trullo, I just feel that there are better Italian restaurants in the city.
I have been here a few times and have always enjoyed my experience. Â The first time we sat outside and watched the "Lincoln walkers". Â It was an added bonus, while enjoying some wonderful Italian wine and super food. Â The next time, we sat in the front room, close to the bar. Â Again, we were able to people watch and had another wonderful dinner and great service. Â
Recently, we sat in the back and experienced wonderful service. Â The wine did not disappoint. Â The fresh bread, olive oil, and shredded parmesan was a great way to start the meal. Â Next, was the calamari.was lightly breaded and not too greasy, accompanied by a zesty red sauce. Â The fish special I ate was huge and flavored perfectly with lemon and olive oil. Â I could not get enough of the spinach, in which the fish was sitting on either. Â As for the tiramisu?!? Â De-lish!
What a solid Italian place in Lincoln Square. Â Two thumbs up!
Writing my review right now to document the time I received my order.
I ordered on Grubhub at 6pm. Â I received a confirmation that it would be delivered around 6:54pm to be precise. Â At around 7:30 I started to worry and called, but nobody answered. Â So then began my ordeal with Grubhub trying to figure out what happened to my order. Â I was reassured it would be there soon, at 8:17pm. Â At that point I figured 2 and a half hours was too much to wait and called to cancel. They told me that they would refund me but the food would be there in any minute (at around 8pm). Â Hence I do not order anything else. Â I wait and wait and at 8:38pm, I receive a knock on the door. Â The delivery guy was really apologetic and I said it was ok even though it wasn't since they kept assuring my that it would just be another couple of minutes, and I waited in total 2hrs and 40 minutes.
I thought I could just deal but the kicker was the food. My pizza was STONE COLD and even after the microwave was not tasty whatsoever. The calamari was heavy and greasy. Â My pasta was flavorless with no olive oil to be seen, the only flavor that I tasted was the way-too-strong cheese that literally tasted like goat poop (not that I have had it but I would imagine that is what it tastes like). Â Worst. delivery experience. ever.
I mean it's good but...
I really wish my girlfriend would stop buying groupons. Â sure you save money but only in the kind of way that you have to order all this extra food to make it worth it. Â The groupon gave us an appetizer, 2 entrees, and a dessert. Â Not bad but throw in her obligatory red wine and that translates to a 15 dollar bill. Â Again not bad but...
I tip the socially responsible way which meant that with the 30 spent on the on the groupon and the other 30 spent on the tip, tax and wine...this really is questionably worth it.
Not to sound cheap but it isn't "lights out." Â I guess i can't complain, i ate a steak prepared the way i like it but...
Overall, food is solid, service excellent but it lacks something.
2nd visit here - this time on a groupon.  We both felt it was a mediocre experience  although I thought service was decent.  I had the snapper special and had to take it back as it was loaded with bones.  I usually don't send things back but it had so many bones in it! Â
They gave the risotto special instead and it was ok, but a bit too much lemon for my liking. Â The dessert was the chef's special and it was excellent - peppermint ice cream and some type of Carmel pie. That alone moved my review up a star, however, overall, with so many great Italian restaurants to choose from and with the lack of parking without paying for a valet 10 bucks, I probably won't return unless I have other plans in the neighborhood.
After another restaurant choice fell through on New Year's Eve, my fiance and I found a lot of reservation availability at Trattoria Trullo...I suppose that should have been the first red flag.
We arrived for our 7:30 reservation at 7:31 pm and found the "lobby" and bar area crowded with seemingly frustrated groups waiting for their table. Â I approached the hostess with a smile and the proper information needed to inform her of my reservation and I was met with a sigh, mumblings about a MAJOR problem and a promise that it will be about 5 minutes.
We braced ourselves for a lengthy wait only to be surprised that the owner (I'm assuming) started to take the bull by the horns and seat individuals who had a reservation. Â We were seated immediately and I can only imagine that we were accidentally ushered to our seats ahead of other groups who had been waiting there, also with a reservation, longer than us.
Judging by the empty tables and time it took for our server to greet us and give us the specials, my fiance and I agreed that the major problem we had heard rumors about had to be that they were short-staffed. Â Fortunately, we were not in any rush to get to a NYE party and instead took the opportunity to enjoy our meal.
I ordered a chicken dish (in a lemon and olive oil sauce) and my fiance ordered a NY Strip...each coming with a $19.50 and $23 ish price tag respectively. Â Unfortunately the only part of the meal that was astounding was the bill. Â My chicken dish was flavor-less (had to salt, pepper and throw grated cheese on it) and average. Â My fiance's 14 oz NY strip was 3 ozs of fat, 4 ozs of gristle and 7 ozs of disappointment.
The atmosphere was very Italian-feeling but the prices were outrageous for the "quality" of entrees they serve. Â Far too many options (Italian or otherwise) in this area to ever return.
Not consistent, which is a real shame.
I used to frequent TT much more when I lived in the area. It was an easy walk over to grab some dinner and wine. Years ago, I noticed the quality and service was excellent.
Fast forward to present day and it's almost like a different place. It's honestly a 50/50 chance you'll get a great meal vs pretty mediocre. Example, my favorite dish there is (was) Orecchiette con Cime di Rapa. It's orecchiette with rapini sautéed in olive oil, garlic, and a pinch of red pepper flakes.
The last couple times I was there, the orecciette was literally swimming in olive oil, almost like a soup. This is gross, and actually makes the pasta flavorless. You'd think the server would notice I didn't eat it, and ask if everything was ok, but lately they don't seem to care. I mentioned it wasn't good or prepared the way it normally is, they didn't offer to remove it from the bill, or get me anything else.
Sorry TT, I'm tired of taking a gamble on you, and usually losing.
My husband and I dined here using a Groupon on a Friday evening - which we were delighted we were able to do since so many restaurants restrict weekend usage. The breakdown:
Food: We ordered the prosciutto melon for an appetizer. My husband enjoyed it but it was just okay to me - I'm just not a fan of salty foods like prosciutto, but he is :) For our entrees, I ordered the mahi mahi on a bed of seafood risotto. Half of my fish was SO dry, but oddly the other half seemed to be okay. The seafood risotto was good - I could have used a little more flavor in it but that's just me being picky. My husband ordered a sirloin with a side of pumpkin ravioli with goat cheese sauce. The sirloin had a nice sauce on it and was cooked perfectly. The ravioli was good, but the goat cheese sauce was SO rich. It was nice for a side, but I wouldn't have been able to eat a whole plate of it. Dessert was the tiramisu, and it was excellent. Very light and fluffy - very enjoyable.
Drinks: If you like white wine, particularly a pino grigio or sauvignon - try the White Botromagno, Gravina. I liked it so much I took a picture of the name in the menu so I could buy a bottle!
Atmosphere: Casual - you could probably make it romantic if you wanted, but our evening was pretty relaxed.
Value: I think for the price you're paying (average of $12-$13 for a dish), you are getting a good dish. My dish would have been in the $20 range had I not had the groupon, and I think I would have been disappointed if I actually would have paid that amount.
I'd certainly be up to going back again, but this time I'll just get a classic Italian pasta dish :)
Let me start off by saying that the entrees were delicious. It's just too bad our waitress mistook us for firefighters who had just received an urgent call because we would have enjoyed our meal even more had we not felt so rushed.
I'm sure she thought she was being efficient, but it made for a less than relaxing evening. The low point was when she tossed the dessert menus down on our table as my husband continued to eat his meal.
The other problem we had was with the wine special. In her haste (I'm sure that must have been it), our waitress neglected to tell us one pretty big detail. The price she quoted was for a half bottle. Imagine our surprise when she arrived with the mini bottle -- turned out the special wasn't so much.
The restaurant is much larger than it appears when you first walk in (in fact, if they ask you if you want to sit in the back or front, be sure to ask to see the back -- it's an entirely different vibe that we regretted not choosing).
We visited this restaurant many times when it was in Evanston and thought it was very good. But I doubt we'll go back again. Unless, of course, we're in a rush.
The crisp and cool breeze on a very bright and sunny Saturday afternoon brought me here for an authentic taste of foreign wonder. Â The atmosphere inside and outside is quite what I imagine sitting in Verona, Italy feels and the olive oil on the table, fresh ground pepper, the ice water, and hot panini with assorted salted thinly sliced meat savored my taste buds to the last bite.
My friend ordered pasta with warm bread, and meat balls. For starters we had a plain and simple soup just hot enough broth to warm up our stomachs for our main course. Â I wasn't ready to leave sitting outdoors in the bright sun light and chilly strong wind by choice on the early empty court yard and streets; it felt nice to be the only people out,
I enjoyed watching in the window the pizza maker roll fresh dough with a wooden roller in his white chef uniform and hat. Â And our waitress was vibrant. Â The quality and originality of the menu here is plain and simple to see and select. Â I hope you enjoy this restaurant as much as we did. Â The site seeing here on a stroll for a brisk walk afterward marks the spot.
My wife and I walked past this place dozens times when we lived in Lincoln Square. On almost every pass, one of us would say "we should use our Groupon for that place." One of the reasons we put it off was an episode of Check Please(!). A lady on the show said her pasta entree was "horrific." I assumed she was being a bit harsh, but um......yeah, not so much.
I think we eventually went on a weekend around 8pm during the summer. We sat in the patio area which was very nice. My chair was close enough to the open windows that i got a blasts of a/c on a very warm night. There's lots of people watching to be had in the Square as well. Very pleasant environment complete with a few adult beverages and delicious fried calamari. So far, so good.
We both ordered daily specials for our mains. I got lamb served over risotto, which was pretty good. My wife ordered the black ink seafood pasta which was, let me tell you, horrific.
The pasta was so over cooked that it turned to mush if you looked at it the wrong way. There wasn't much in the way of seasoning either. Very unappealing. She would have sent it back, but our server disappeared after we got our food. I hate to say it, but it's almost like she knew.
As we shared my risotto, we notice that no one on the patio was eating pasta. The argument could be made that it was too hot to eat pasta, but pizza and risotto are not any lighter in the grand scheme of things. Might have been just a coincidence, but I wonder.....?
This might be a cheap shot and I'm sorry, but It also didn't help matters much seeing the owner walk around with a holier than thou attitude while his Italian restaurant can't even serve pasta al dente. I'm sure he is very proud of his establishment and I get that, but seriously man; taste the pasta sometime. Â
Very long story short, don't look at the pasta section of the menu if you go here. Which for an Italian restaurant, is pretty bad.
