Before today I had only been to the University Diner once, over a year ago. The food was mediocre at best and the service was slow so I hadn't planned to ever return. But I found myself in the area today and since it had been so long, I thought I'd give it another try. I shouldn't have bothered.
I sat down at the counter around 4:15 and waited several minutes before the hostess came to offer me a menu. I wanted to order a coffee while I was looking at the menu but she walked away before I could say a single word. After looking at the menu, I waited patiently for a server to come take my order.
The diner was nearly empty (there was one other patron at the counter and two tables were occupied) and there were plenty of employees milling about (I counted at least 8, mostly talking amongst themselves) but none of them seemed the slightest bit interested in serving me. Several times I caught employees (including the hostess, a busboy, a waiter, and a waitress) staring at me but as soon as I made eye contact or tried to get their attention they would look away and hurry off.
After waiting more than half an hour, I finally did something I've never done in a restaurant in my life: I got up and left without ordering. Clearly the people running this place don't want my business so I won't ever make the mistake of setting foot in this place again.
Best diner food in the university area...free wifi is an added plus - but the food is great, the booths are spacious and the service is always pleasant. Â
Their matzo ball soup is amazing!! Â Their portions are big and the restaurant is clean and well lit.
We live closer to the Tropicana - but it pales in comparison. Â No. Â Really, really pale/
Long Live the University Diner!!
