If you're a food snob or can't appreciate some of the cheaper and not-fancy things in life, then you've already dismissed White Castles. Â Me however? Â I have very fond memories of White Castles from my childhood. Â We had a big one in Elmhurst, Queens New York and I would remember my dad bringing home the sliders and fries and us nomming on them as we discussed his day (as much as a 7 year old can discuss it anyhow).
Since then, I've always enjoyed White Castles food. Â It's not good for you, it's not the best burger in the world, but it is comforting and really, really good drunk food post-partying! Â Among my favorites are the basic White Castle, the chicken rings and their fries (but they have to be eaten fresh, they're gross after they get cold).
This White Castles was already here when I moved to Elizabeth, but it had not yet been renovated. Â The interior was like something out of the 80's and by that I mean older tile, seats with obvious damage and so on. Â Since then however it has been renovated to the current standard with brighter colors, different layout in seating (giving the appearance of a more spacious interior) and new wallpaper. Â The staff keeps the place clean too. Â During Holidays, they'll use the containers for the burgers to build decorations like a Christmas tree which I found charming.
I've always found the service at this branch good to excellent. Â I've never waited longer than 10 minutes for my food and the staff is very friendly with everyone who comes in. Â
Pre-renovation I would have probably given this three stars, but post renovation I have to give them high marks for trying to keep the place fresh. Â Also kudos for keeping the parking lot clean and in good shape.
Ah. What can you say? It'sthe first fast food burger joint in the world. Â Those little square patties cooked with chopped onions and topped with pickles. Â This location is the White Castle from my child hood. Â This is definitely the lesser of the evils when it comes to burger places.
