When I walked in this place, I was floored.

The place is HUGE. I had NO idea. I kind of expected it was going to be the size of a college auditorium.

We went to see Jason Alexander. He bombed so hard on stage that people were running for the exits. We left when he started putting on a crown made of straws and singing "Jesus Christ Superstar." Poor George.

The staff were very friendly. One star off because the will call window lines are set up POORLY. There are 3 different lines , and you have to place a gamble on which line to pick. No separate line for diamond members.

As a long-time concert-goer, I was excited at the chance to see my favorite band Yes at The Venue in the Horseshoe Casino. I've never seen a show there before, so I was not sure what to expect. I arrived about 30 minutes before the show and found the parking to be most difficult. While it's free to park at the casino, I noticed the upper levels were completely filled. While some cars circled round and round looking for someone to leave, I took the opposite way and went down instead. I actually found a lot of available space on the 2nd and 3rd levels while the upper levels and rooftop parking were at capacity. That is something to keep in mind the next time I come here.

The theatre is on the upper floor of the casino and yes, you do have to walk through the casino the reach The Venue, just as you would in Vegas. A long carpeted stairway leads to the upper floor. While most people took the escalator up, I got my cardio workout running up the stairs.

As for the theatre venue itself, it is excellent in every sense. I would have no problem seeing another show here. Seating, sight and sound are the 3 S's of seeing a show in my book. First, the seating was excellent. Wide aisles, wide seats, each with its own armrests, and plenty of leg room in front of each seat made it one of the most comfortable experiences of seeing a show for me. Sight - with the raised design, it's almost like a theatre style multiplex theatre, so you do not have to peek between the heads of people in front of you. In case you can't see the stage... well there are a pair of giant video screens on either side to give you an even better view. Though I had an aisle seat with an unobstructed view of the stage, my eyes kept drifting to the video screen, where I was able to see things up close and from different angles than from where I was sitting. It's as if the video screen was the stage at times because of its excellent view. Lastly the sound. Not a hiccup in the audio. Vibrant, clear and no feedback or undesirable echoes that you may hear at other venues. Sometimes the sound is problematic just for the first 20-30 minutes before they get it right but not at this show. From what I saw and heard first-hand, Horseshoe made a first class theatre inside the casino. I definitely would come back here to see more shows.

Once inside the auditorium, it was great. Just the right size. Sound was fine to awesome.  Didn't hear an echo other posters mentioned and my husband notices such things. We were on the back row but no complaints at all. Probably no bad seats in the house. We will go again. ...With 3 caveats- all have to do with the place::: Don't come hungry, leave your coat in the car, and park on a lower level even if you have to drive circles until you find a spot. (Didn't check it, but if the angle allows, back the car in to avoid backing into traffic later.)  We enjoyed the great view of Chicago from the top parking deck for more than an hour since we couldn't get our car out of the spot because the line of cars never moved an inch til the floors below emptied out. Inside, the casino is thick with smoke and you have to walk thru it to get to the Venue. The coat check was easy in but took a half hour standing in line with smokers to get it after the show. Leaving the coat in the car solves the problems of waiting and not wanting your coat drenched in smoke. Food was too hard to get and it was also smoke filled. After waiting a half hour in a line that didn't move for the buffet, we opted for UNO pizza and a bottle of water from a cart in the lobby by the ticket window. Found a bench and had a picnic. It was great. As long as we didn't inhale. Discovered after we went in- inside the venue, past the ticket takers, the inner lobby has sofas where people were enjoying their pizzas in a smoke free environment. Beer is expensive but it was in big cups- better deal than ball games. The lobby bar and the stage right service bar had lines. The service bar at stage left had no waiting.

As a former Las Vegas resident, I'm an experienced casino venue attendee.  Almost all major acts play at casino venues rather than independent arenas or clubs as they do here.  Chicago has more rooms, clubs, venues and arenas than just about any other city I've lived in, (and that includes Seattle) so the question to answer is, is it worth it to deal with traffic and drive to Hammond to see an act you're interested in when there are plenty of options right here in your own back yard?  The answer is... "absolutely".   Whether or not you agree with me however depends on how much you actually enjoy the amenities a casino has to offer and are willing to overlook the negatives.

The Horseshoe casino completed an 18 month, 53 million dollar renovation to their former floating pit of despair and replaced it with an absolutely beautiful, spacious, well laid out casino that totally holds it's own along side any of its Vegas relatives.  The Venue is their 3.400 seat, state-of-the-art theater located on the second floor of the casino.  The main floor features well spaced, comfortable seats that are decently raked on enough of an angle to to allow good sight lines no matter where you are sitting.  Tonight, we saw Heart from one of the "Luxury Suites" which essentially a theater box with food and beverage service and your own bathroom included in your ticket price.  The ushers and servers were friendly and helpful and the view was good but it would have been nicer if they could have built the suites a little closer to the stage.  In a traditional medium sized concert hall layout such as this one, the mezzanine usually begins somewhere above the 25th row of seats give or take but these suites are at least 35 rows back which is far back enough to still make you jealous of the people on the main floor who are a lot closer to the action than you are even as you are sitting in your cushy theater seat enjoying your complimentary crab puffs and vodka tonic. (Really generously poured vodka tonic I might add.)  Concert started 15 minutes late which is not bad at all, the sound was brilliant, the lighting was totally serviceable and the entrance/egress/flow of traffic all is well designed and moves well.

    Other amenities:

Food - We ate at the buffet.  The line to get in at 5:15 was not all that long and we still waited quite a while to get in as the process to pay $21.95 x 2 is somewhat complex and takes Ethel a while to get through.  If you're pressed for time, be warned.  Once we got going however the food was fresh, there was enough variety, and everything we sampled was quite good. (The Chipotle Meatloaf is a major winner.) The desserts are great, light cakes, well made cheesecakes and even some sugar free options exist.  (The little key lime pies are especially good)

After the concert we explored the 3 story area where the gift shop, Binion's Steak House and other amenities are located at got a personal size sausage pizza at the Uno's To Go which was molten lava hot and surprisingly good.

Gaming - Excellent variety of games (both tables and slots) with plenty of penny and nickel slots for those who don't want to take any major risks.  The Wizard of Oz and Ghostbusters slots were especially fun with great graphics, sounds and interactive features.

And now of course, the major downside to it all.  As of July 1st, Indiana amended its smoking law to exclude bars and casinos so if you are a non-smoker be aware you will once again be taken back to the good old days of people smoking everywhere you go INDOORS.  The casino floor does have a non smoking section but this of course will be irrelevant as you will still have to walk through the entire casino (naturally) to get to any eatery or to the venue itself so you will indeed smell like an ashtray when you get home just like the good old days!

I took a buddy here for his bachelor party. We came out for a night of aged steaks and live boxing. The Venue was a great place to take in the show. We even got a chance to see some celebrities. Vince Vaughn, Fabio and Governor Blago were in attendance to watch some aspiring fighters beat each other up. Overall, the place is nice. The seats were comfortable and the views from all angles were good. The only downside is having to walk through the casino filled with smoke and see Grandma Nelly spend her social security check on a one-armed bandit. If she only knew he ain't got no love for her...

I really didn't know what to expect of The Venue. But, I must say, I had a FAB experience when I went for the Erykah Badu concert. The previous reviewers were absolutely correct- make sure you get there early, to allow time for parking and the commute through the casino. If you are under 30, you will be required to stand in line at the casino for an ID Check. Also, the lines at the bars were long- so if you drink, then you need time for that. I had a daiquiri, that was the special for the evening and it was yummy. Even better, there was a special of buy one at $11 (in a nice LARGE glass, and not the little stingy cups used for other drinks), and get refills at $6.

Warning: If you are used to concerts starting late, don't expect this at Horseshoe. Our show started a few minutes late, but YOU want to be there when the star hits the stage. Why? Because The Venue gives them the boot after the 2 hour window- at 10pm on the dot, Erykah was prompted to exit the stage. I heard other concert-goers saying that this is typical of concerts at this venue. There were several people who arrived at the show, an hour late and were quite disappointed to have missed so much of it.

Also, as stated by previous reviewers, the acoustics were GREAT.

In terms of seating, I would stay away from the balcony but splurge on any of the floor seats. You really don't need to be right up front; Section 200s provided a perfect view of the stage (no squinting necessary); and the large screens on either side of the stage, provided alternative viewing options.

    That's all peeps!

My first concert at The Venue. Tho I was a bit intimidated thinking it was "all the way in Indiana". I had to go see Blondie when I found out she'd be there.

    <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D6FBZ_kY8ZS4&s=bcc8f3038f3e9e57e3f966874622a40628ba86cd5a8d9daa7f1d2a4db181938a" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.youtube.com/w…</a>

I didn't preorder my tickets since I was unsure I'd make the Wed., Aug. 18, mid work week so I took my chances and got my tickets there. It turned out not to be such a bad drive, the Skyway got us there in no time at all.
In the elevator other people were praising The Venue. One guy said, "How can you beat free parking? And there are no bad seats at The Venue." That made be feel confident to ask for their lowest price tickets, which for that particular show was $30  for Section 205 Seat 13 B--I know, "13", at least it wasn't a Friday.
The guy in the elevator was right! I was satisfied with my seat on the second mezzanine level. There were two giant screens on each side of the stage--mind you, the camera shots were not very professional and the video clarity wasn't so great. But it was decent. What can you expect for $30?  (ok lets not forget the additional $2 I lost in the FISH STORE slot machine).
I was thoroughly pleased with the acoustics, and Blondie's performance was top notch! I couldn't believe it--is she really 65 years old??!!
Another thing that made the evening so pleasant was it remenicent of the pre 9-11 days. No searching through your bags. No metal detectors. No ushers attacking you with negativity, "No photos, no food, no phones, no this, no that."--e.g. the ushers at my church.  Before the performance there was a courteous announcement that no videos, or photos were allowed and that was it. The ushers were friendly and graciously directed you to where you needed to go, they pointed out the bar areas, etc. Then they left you alone.  They were more Christian-like than the ushers at my church, I'm sad to admit.
I can't wait to go back for future concerts. Donny & Marie will be there next week (so nostagic)...hummmm...

The seating is great- not really a bad one in the house, and they were pretty comfortable.  Sound  was not so good at times. Sometimes you could not hear what Debbie Harry was saying. Their Security Staff sucked for this event (Blondie)  they were not allowing pictures, and were just really rude to people who were at the stage dancing. I'm sorry, but who shells out money to go to a concert and sit?? They were not doing anything I watched the whole incident. The girls hands kept touching the stage??  So?  The artist had no problem because she came over and  shook her hand!!  I don't think I would ever go back to this place.  Chicago has much better venues for concerts.  I am actually glad that Illinois has NO  smoking in public places.  You walked through huge clouds of smoke getting through the casino after the show.

Last night I took my girlfriend to see Tony Bennett at the Venue located at Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, IN.

I honestly bought the tickets for this concert only having a vague idea of what to expect. After all Tony is in his 80s now.

But the show was excellent. He had top notch musicians backing him and by keeping the combo stripped down to drums, stand-up bass, jazz guitar and piano and by keeping it acoustic, the focus was trained on his voice... And what a voice!

His phrasing and intonation are right on the money and he can still pull out the stops and bowl you over with the sort of power that only come from well toned pipes from a celebrated singer of his era.

And folks, he is the last one. You want old school renditions from the classic American songbook that are authentic. He's the last master! All the others are long gone.

If Tony Bennett is coming anywhere near your town, spend the money and sit up front.

    You will not be sorry.

    Thanks Tony!

    ------------------------------

Now let's talk about the Venue. When I say never again, I mean never again...

My girlfriend and I were a bit worried about making it to the show on time as we were attempting to leave Chicago at 5:30 PM on a Friday. Miraculously traffic was light and we arrived at the Horseshoe Casino (where the Venue is located) a few minutes past six.

Since the show was at 7:30 you'd figure there's plenty of time to grab a quick bite before the show starts right?

    Nope.

First, you are forced to walk thru the Casino to get to the Venue. It's sad and frankly feels like you've entered into a scene from Shawn of the Dead. People either resemble Jabba the Hut, Yoda or a recovering crack addict. Needless to say I got the shakes anytime I had to get in an elevator. But this is not the fault of the establishment.. It's sadly the class of people that in this era you should expect to find at a casino in Hammond, IN.

However, there were roughly a handful of restaurants in this Casino and we were unable to find a single establishment that was sufficiently staffed to meet the needs of feeding attendees arriving for this concert. Either you had high end restaurants that were completely booked for the entire night or you had low grade buffets with lines stretching down along the entrance. Folks were waiting literally hours to eat mediocre food. We actually tried this for about 40 minutes and then finally gave up as we discovered that while we may get our order in within the hour there was no telling when we would actually finally get our food. Needless to say it would have been long after the show started.

    This is unacceptable.

If the Casino is hosting a concert where they know the event is sold out they should anticipate the additional in-flux of people needing to be serviced before and after the show. This clearly was not done as masses of folks were all wandering around the joint all with the same frustration we were experiencing.

My advice, if there is any other place to see an artist of Mr. Bennett's stature go there and avoid the Venue altogether. If you absolutely have no choice and have to make the trip to Hammond, stop somewhere on the way (the McDonald's on the Skyway Overpass would have even been preferable). In other words, get in and get out!

Love that a theatre this freakin' awesome is so close to home for me.

The Venue is a state-of-the-art concert experience that hosts popular talents ALL the time! There is not a single bad seat in the house! Seriously, when I've gone to see performances there, I've been afraid to speak in a loud tone of voice because I feel like the artist will be able to hear and will feel like I'm interrupting them! lol.

I haven't been there recently (because I've wonder if they have changed this) but I do believe regular seating is better than floor seating at this place. Floor seating is regular metal folding chairs and the regular seating are huge, plush seats that recline and have cup holders. Far more comfortable than the floor seats and you STILL get a great view.

Again, like so many before me have mentioned, the acoustics in this place are INCREDIBLE. Probaly the best. And I'm huge concert goer, so that says a lot.

Tip: Get on the Venue's mailing list to be informed of all the musical and talent acts that frequent this place and you can even purchase tickets there to avoid all of Ticketmaster's lame fees.

All in all, if you're seeing a performance at The Venue, you're in for a great experience, FREE PARKING (valet is available as well), and the hospitality of the casino staff (makeshift bars are set up throughout the casino when concerts are going on as well as makeshift dance floors with DJ's).

tip #2: early arrival is suggested on days that stuff is going at the Casino. Considering there are only two ways in and out of this place, traffic can get congested!

First time at this venue, and I was impressed.  Ushers are very organized and swift with making sure to get concert-goers to the correct seats in an orderly fashion.  The people at the booths work fast to get your money for their overpriced merchandise (haha)

The acoustics in this venue were pretty outstanding. Of course it's priority for acoustics to be be outstanding, but trust me, I've been to venues where they were horrific, even leaving one particular concert after 10 minutes listening to deafening tones.  The layout of the seats were nice where every seat in the house had a good view on the stage.

Great place to see shows.  We went there on Saturday to see Wanda Sykes.  She was very funny and used a lot of material from her HBO stand-up show.  Nonetheless, still a great time.   It was a packed house and it appears that no matter where you sat, the view would still be good.  With the two screens showing here on stage, it didn't matter we were pretty far back.

Would definitely go back to see more talent.  It appears well known talent performs at this place all the time.  Just the day before, Patti Labelle performed.  Wish I would have seen that one.

For the concert I saw (Gypsy Kings), there was no cover band - I've heard this is a pretty recurrent theme at The Venue.  So its a good thing and a bad thing.   Good thing - you get to see the band that you actually came to see.   Bad thing - shorter concerts than you are used to seeing.

The Venue has the BEST acoustics I have seen.... well, ever (in such as LARGE venue).  The sound quality is superb.  Lighting is well-done.  And there are cameras that project the show onto two large screens on the side of the stage - even though every seat in The Venue is a pretty good seat.

Now you may be thinking, "Now why are you raving so many compliments about The Venue and only giving 3-stars?"...  And I'd say, "Very good question, my friend." First, I would like more bands and a longer concert experience. I felt like The Venue wanted me to see the headline band and then get the heck outta that theatre.... and into the casino.  Which brings me to my second point. The Casino - the smoke and grime of Indiana casinos make it less appealing to go to The Venue.  If this was Vegas, well, different story.  But its Indiana.  Sorry Indiana, but you are not Vegas in my eyes.

Anyways, if you like casinos, and love great acoustics (and are +21), you'll love The Venue.

I went to The Venue (at the Horseshoe Casino) with some friends to see the Gypsy Kings. I liked The Venue. It was large, but not too large, had comfortable seats and the sound was great. The Gypsy Kings performance was quite amazing too and I am glad I saw it at The Venue. I live in Chicago and it is a bit of a drive over to the Indiana/Illinois border to go to The Venue. It takes all but a half an hour to get over there, but I generally stay close when I go out. To make the best of the evening we all dressed up for the show. Afterward we even had some drinks and played some slots at the Horseshoe Casino (which I will review next). It was an overall good night.

I saw Melissa Etheridge here and it was Fabulous!! We purchased some cheap seats at the last minute, and they turned out to be great seats! Not only that, as the concert was ending and everyone was leaving I walked straight up to the stage and she came back out!!! Yes, touched her hand!! If you ever have the chance to see a headliner at a small Venue like this one, go for it. The experience is so worth it!

As far as theaters are concerned I guess you would call this being on the small to medium size, which make for good sight lines. Unlike some of the other reviews we had no problems with the ushering, we were directed at various points to our seats correctly, we also didn't find the seats uncomfortable, matter of fact quite the opposite.

We saw Bill Maher and the beginning of  the show was punctuated with a few people screaming out "louder" Bill improvised with jokes about the place being just opened and a guy named Vern, saying you think 6 will be good on this?

Bar coverage was good, they even had one set up to the left of the stage, convenient and clean rest rooms. This place is about half hour south of the loop, for people like me that live south, YAY it took us just about 10 minutes.

The couple of things that I didn't like, I don't know if there is another way in, however the way we went, you had to walk through the casino, so if you take the I'll do a little gambling since I'm here attitude, it could add to the cost of the evening. Luckily for us, we did manage to win a few bucks that paid for the tickets. But hey, it's a casino after all and I'll bet they make more money from gambling losses then the theater.

The second thing was the after show food options, you had the steak house, that's to long and drawn out for after siting through a show, then there was a bar that looked like they served food judging by the condiments on the tables, but there was no one at the host/hostess station or anyone to assist you. And lastly, what looked to be most promising was a cafe type set up  salads, burgers, and bakery items. A lot of staff behind the counter here, maybe they came over from the bar? So many that they seemed to be stepping on top of each other, however the line was long and it seemed like people had been waiting a long time for there food, just standing off to the side looking pissed. We made two attempts to get food, no dice. So we ended up at McDonald's just outside the casino.

So why four stars? Well it's for the theater...all the other stuff is just info. Park free, walk through casino and keep your hands out of your pockets. And lastly, don't go hungry or pack a protein bar.

Always heard about the great talent that the Venue attracts.  My wife and I saw Bill Maher last night.  Why not 5 stars? The seats were not the most comfortable.  I live on the north side of Chicago, it was a 25 minute drive to get home.  Very close.

Good acoustics, good sight lines, large tv screens as well.
    POOR ushering----very disorganized.
Overpriced drinks-requested tonic with vodka---got something weird that tasted like soda without flavoring and NO VODKA.
    FREE parking!
Saw Gladys Knight on 3/27 with the husband.  Packed, but very crowd.

I know the staff puts a lot of effort into this place, and the guys that maintain it must do a good job. It is always pretty clean and nothing appears to be in bad shape. I have seen a few concerts here and thought that they were OK. I am not sure how I feel about the general admission shows, the floor gets REALLY slippery if someone spills their drink. I have seen many people fall on that floor.

Also there were a few concerts early on where the floor felt like trampoline if you were standing, being on the second floor of a boat/building that was scary. Whatever they did seemed to make that better in the last few shows.

It's not the best place to see a show, but by far, not the worst.

I also wish they had more acts that were of my persuasion...

Some things to note that I found out when I was there...

They have motorized wheel chairs if you need them also regular wheel chairs, I was told we had to pay for them, but then they gave one for free to another person that was standing in line next to me to get one for the buddy I took to the show.

I do not smoke and I thought that it was nice that even though you could smoke in the rest of the casino, you could not smoke in the Venue.

I have no idea why anyone would write a bad review on a place so nice located in Hammond, IN. This is not Chicago, it is a working town. The place is great. Seat views are really good anywhere you sit. Tickets are sometimes reasonably priced and sometimes not. My only complaint might be the sound quality. I have been there 5 times I think.

People who complain about the food in the casino and the construction going through Chicago have to remember they are rating the Venue, not the casino or their drive over. This place is just about better than any place in downtown.

I got some great tickets to see Lewis Black here a couple months back. The Venue isn't as "pretty" as some places downtown like the Chicago theater, but our seats were great and it seemed like all of them really were an unobstructed stage view! Plus they had (at least) 3 bars and minibars serving drinks before and during the show. The minibars were inside the theater area and forced Lewis Black to call us all a bunch of lushes... a charge that few in the theater could deny.

I'm not a big fan of casinos or for that matter, a big fan of Hammond, IN (haha). BUT it was a great time and if any other acts I want to see come to the Venue I'll be back!!

Another bump for the Horseshoe Casino.

I came back to the venue this past weekend for the Amazing Race season 16 casting call and got to see how nice, organized, and clean the place was from the good seats and in good lighting.

There really aren't any bad seats. It's easy to see the stage from anywhere and the seats are really comfy with the arm rest that folds up so you can snuggle... or whatever.

I hope some of my faves start making their rounds at the Horseshoe.

I can only review the suites. I was in a suite for 20 people the other night for a show and it was great. We shared the suite with another group but it was totally fine. They had their side and we had ours. We shared 2 bartenders who made anything we asked (no champagne though, oh well) and the food was SO GOOD. I think I ate all of the desserts but really who cares, we had a suite and that's what I was there for, the booze, food, friends, and entertainment. Restrooms were close and security was really nice and quick on their feet when a couple of cougars tried to sneak in our private suite. I don't think there is a bad seat in the house here. Its not that big and the sound is pretty good. I would come again.

The Venue is decent.  Sight lines were very good.  We saw Craig Ferguson last night.  Obviously, not much in the way of lighting was used.  The sound for his opening act was very harsh and sounded like they used the same settings for both Ferguson and the opener (and the same mic, which is stupid).

Here's the annoyances:  I could see a backstage exit, and people were coming and going through it all night.  There was a fluorescent light in the stairway on the other side of the door, so every time it got opened I saw it.  It got really annoying.  Second, the follow spot op was terrible.  The spot kept jumping around, like the operator would bump it.  I've run spots for people lots of times.  The hardest part about it is the ability to keep still.  Third:  stay away from the bar in The Venue lobby.  All the liquor comes out of guns, and it all tastes like crap.  For the show I was at they had small portable bars inside, with real bottles.

See my other review of the casino in general.

They get some great acts for a good price which is awesome.  In terms of the setup of the arena,  its fairly simple.  First floor has round cocktail tables that seat around four.  The 2nd and 3rd level have theatre style seating.  Nothing special about the arena but props to for getting acts at a good value.

In response to Bob S - I think I must have been closer to the stage, and maybe out of the echo? I'm pretty picky about that stuff...sorry to hear that the sound quality isn't universal. Either way, I wouldn't consider this a top notch venue - Bob's got it right. I went here ONLY becuase the Pumpkins weren't also playing any venue in Chicago.

Damn...I thought I was going to get first crack at this place.

Anyway, I agree with most of what Andrew T. said below, but I totally disagree with his assessment of the sound quality.  I was on the main floor for Smashing Pumpkins about halfway back and there was a LOT of echo.  I almost felt like we were in a large, metal shipping crate.  I know it's situated on a "boat", but there's no need to make it feel that way.  I wasn't quite as concerned about the safety, but the floor was definitely moving quite a bit during some of the louder songs.  I'm guessing they did adequate testing, but I wouldn't want to be there for Stone Temple Pilots in a few weeks.  Just sayin'.

If you work for a large company and want a fun place to present your third quarter sales presentation, it could be a good place.  No one is paying attention to Jeff from accounting anyway and the sound won't matter.  If you're going to see your all-time favorite band and are picky about the sound quality, wait until they go through Chicago.  And if - like the Pumpkins - they aren't going through Chicago, it's worth the drive elsewhere.
