This was my second visit here and my fiance and I tried the price fixe menu special for the month of March. The atmosphere is amazing, but the food left something to be desired. My fiance had the hanger steak, which had a great flavor. I on the other hand had the prawns, which more resembled baby shrimp rather than prawns. Then for dessert they literally served us frozen cream puffs from Costco...I am not kidding you....definitely not homemade and they could have at least bothered to defrost them. I almost chipped a tooth biting into the cream puff. I would return again, but only with a coupon and avoid any seafood dishes.

I was at the restaurant for a seminar/dinner, I accidentally dropped my phone.  Two witnesses saw the waiter with the phone and helped him look for the owner. When I discovered my phone was missing I made numerous calls to the restaurant.  They denied that any phone had ever been found.

So watch your valuable if you go there!!!

First off the restaurant is converted out of an old train! As if that's not cool if enough the ambiance is delightful! The servers really know the menu and how/what to pair an the food lives up to its description. A little pricy but the portions are hefty and the cuisine is delightful

What a great experience.   I was a little skeptical since we had a Living Social deal coupon.  We showed the coupon up front and our waiter said "Thank you so much for bringing in the coupon."  We then proceeded to order glasses of wine.  We waited a little bit of time for the wine.  Nothing obnoxious ... I wasn't at all impatient.  I was just looking around and enjoying our evening out.  Our waiter came back and apologized for us having to wait so long for our wine.  It was really no problem!  Then he proceeded to say that the glasses of wine was on the house!  Incredible!  The waiter was one of the best we've ever had and our evening out put such a smile on our faces!
    We'll be back!
I just realized I've been raving about the customer service and forgot to mention the food.  The food is superb!  The ambiance inside the dining room train is unique.  Love the restaurant!

I enjoyed the vintage building and jazz music (probably the best part of my dining experience). The food was okay. My steak was not cooked medium. How easy is that?  Disappointed.

I couldn't have picked a better restaurant for my bday. My family lives in Oceanside and we live in Orange so San Juan Capistrano was the best midpoint location. I reserved a Pullman train car for my party of 8.  George, our server, was great from start to finish.  He explained everything in the menu thoroughly and recommended great appetizers.  We had 3 orders of the 5 spice tuna tataki and 3 orders of the pernod scampi.  We enjoyed the ambience of our private pullman train car.  It was a very nice, intimate bday dinner with my favorite people.  Most of us ordered the ribeye with the 3 sauces but liked the one with mushroom best.  Everything was made according to how we like it.

Thank you George for making my bday dinner  very special.  Highly recommended!

    Highlights:

    The Ribeye steak
    The mushroom special appetizer
The chocolate cake with peppermint ice cream
Our server, who's name I cannot remember, but tall, dark, longish-haired guy with his hair pulled back.

This review is for the bar at the Vintage Steakhouse.

We frequent this bar for food, not for drinks. Most bars have awful service for food patrons, with water refills few and far between, etc. The bartenders here are very attentive, so even if you're sitting at a table across from the bar, they will make sure you have refills, ketchup, and so on.

There's a special bar menu that has bar-only food items on it. The prices are significantly lower than the regular dinner menu, so it can be a good little spot to eat if you're looking to get the nice ambiance of eating in a train car but can't swing the higher cost in the dining room.

Oh, I have just one tip: get the peanut butter creme brulee. Seriously. You're welcome.

For the first time I went their w/my Hubby and my two kids.  I order their Calamari steak.  It was organismic!  And for kids, simple finger food like biscuit and chicken strips.  For the kids also had choo, choo train box to go, which I thought it was cute!

I have been hearing all these great things about this place from friends and finally decided to give it a try. I loved the setting, eating in a train cart is just so cute. I've come here 2 times now. And I'll be honest the first time I was disappointed in the food. I ordered a sirloin steak and it was tough and rubbery and literally my hand hurt at the end of lunch from having to use so much force to cut it. It was also flavorless and I used all the sauce just to make it have some taste. Not what I was expecting for a steakhouse. But today we decided to give it another try. My husband and I both ordered the Filet Mignon! And to our pleasant surprise It was perfect and delicious, moist and the sauces were great.

Service both times was great. The servers are very attentive. I also recommend to get the white chocolate mousse with berries dessert ...yum yum.

My hubs and I had a great dinner here. We sat outside on the patio and enjoyed the cool evening air.

I had the salmon and my hubs had a steak. We were the only people on the patio so it was nice and private. Our waiter was really nice and quick. He told us he enjoyed walking out onto the cool patio from the hot kitchen.

The food was good and my fish was cooked just right. I had the new potatoes and a spinach salad. I was also served creamed corn which was good was wow...such a tiny amount! I had maybe three tablespoonfuls...if that. I loved the spinach salad and if I could eat it every day, I would.

We took a walk afterward, past the El Adobe and over by the mission. San Juan Capistrano is a cute little town and worth exploring on foot.

Overall, I would return here. I didn't experience any of the problems other Yelpers have commented on. Maybe we just lucked out and got a good waiter. The restaurant itself is an old converted railroad car. I know my hubs and I have eaten here years ago when it was called something else. The restaurant pretty much still looks the same both from the outside and the inside.

I was concerned about all the negative reviews about both food quality and service.  We purchased a Travelzoo voucher for a 4 course meal, and finally had dinner at Vintage Steakhouse tonight.  Service was excellent - 5 stars+ (I believe our waiter's name was Charlie).
Food was pretty good.  We shared ahi tuna appetizer (good), I had soup and my husband had Caesar salad (average), then for our main entrees we had NY steak (it was just ok) and pork chops (good).  By the time dessert came we were so stuffed we could barely touch it.
Again, not sure what all the bad reviews are about especially when it comes to voucher holders not being treated right.

Waited 15min for menus and waiter to check on us.

They were pleasant and nice tho.

Server was sick, coughing and sneezing and using the same hand that covered his mouth to serve everyone.

Our salads came out half way thru the entree cuz they forgot.

Tuna tataki was 3/5. Seasoned and charred well.

New York was cocos grade. Tough. Hood seasoning and cooked as requested. They couldn't provide at least choice grade? Twice baked was more like thrice baked.

Chocolate cupcake dessert seemed 2 days old. Very dry.

What a romantic place for dinner.  We made reservations for 6 but got there way too early but they still seated us.  Service is excellent and food is juts superb!  I had the prime hanger steak and my boyfriend had the mesquite chicken breast.  We will most definitely go back soon.

One of the nicest dinner I have had in a long time and we just returned home from a 5 star cruise so we have had some very good dinners. The waiter and servers were excellent. The choices were good, the trout appetizer was excellent. There were four of us and we all enjoyed everything. I love  the ambiance and chose to watch the trains. It would be a fun place for a special occasion.

Wow. I am surprised at the less than stellar reviews. My best friend Tricia and I had dinner there this past Saturday night and we had spectacular service and deliciously prepared food.

We were greeted at the door by friendly, grinning faces and we were asked to wait a moment while they set up a table for us. While we waited we were asked twice by two other staff members if we were being taken care of. I loved that. the mentality is that of TEAMWORK and not "they are somebody else's problem to deal with". We were seated within 5 minutes.

    The Service

Charlie our waiter -  was hands down the BEST WAITER I have ever had in any restaurant setting.  Smart, well spoken, knows his menu, friendly, great food recommendations, good wine service, attentive when we needed him and left us alone to chat when we needed that.

    * * * * * * * ** Why oh why can't all waiters in all restaurants be like Charlie?!?!?!?

    The Food.

Appetizer: Six Spice Ahi & Avocado Tataki.  Simply mouth watering!! Bravo!!!

Salad: Spinach Salad: Good solid tasty salad.

Meat: We both got Filet Mignon. They were cooked exactly how we wanted them  Very nice cut of beef with good texture and flavor. Served with three sauces that you could choose to accompany your meat.  My choice was the mushroom sauce and it dd not disappoint.

Sides: Twice Baked Potato - skip the mashed and go for layers of flavor with this choice!

Creamy Corn.  I have banned this veggie from my palette since being terrorized as a child by the canned version from my mother. This is so fresh and light. I added a bit of pepper to season it a bit further and it was the first time in my life I happily ate creamy corn.

Seasonal veggies were enhanced by pouring a bit of their Roasted Garlic and Olive Oil over the top.

Wine was ice cold and we were too stuffed for dessert!

Ask for Charlie's section if you want amazing service!

All in all an amazing dining experience!!!

The restaurant is billed as a Steak House and is housed in a converted Pullman rail car. Very interesting and different place to dine. We came in for lunch and I had a small Cesar salad and Mesquite Top Sirloin steak. The waiter suggested a glass of Murphy cabernate suvignon which was delightful. The salad was generous but average lacking the better and in my mind essential inclusion of bacon. The steak was over done for my liking but was still flavorful. The red wine reduction was really good and the vegetables were perfect. Overall, the ambience is nice although the temperature was very hot. The food was good but below the bar I would have expected for a restuarant that attempts to hit the mark of fine dinning. Moreover, the prices commanded would also suggest that the quality should be higher that I experienced. Good spot for an intimate dinner but not a place for kids.

I really liked the concept of using the Pullman rail car for a restaurant and hope the restuarant does well in the future. The town and area surrounding the restaurant is very quaint and nice to wlak around in. A great place to take a break from the traffic on Highway 5.

My husband and I enjoyed his birthday dinner at Vintage Steakhouse.  Prior to making our reservation, I searched reviews at Yelp ... I was concerned that I saw so many negative comments, but I realized the majority were written by people trying to use "Travel Zoo" or "Group On" coupons and not realizing those deals typically are for specific menu items and they don't allow you to "upgrade" to other items.  I work in the hospitality industry, and I realize some of these patrons can be challenging.

We decided to give it a try and we were so pleased we did!  We started our dining experience with a very delicious dirty martini in the bar.  When we were ready to be seated, we were offered a great table near the window so we could watch the trains pass (they also offered us a table in the dining car, but we opted for the window seat.)

We shared an amazing bottle of wine.  We started our dinner with the shrimp appetizer and a bowl of corn soup -- yummy!  We shared a salad with walnuts and bleu cheese and also decided to share the 23 ounce bone-in rib-eye (tomahawk) ... WOW!!!!  It was amazing!  We each had a baked potato and steamed vegetable with our steak.   For dessert, they brought my husband a complimentary cinnamon crucnch with happy birthday written across the top of the plate in caramel.

Our dining experience was perfect and we will definitely go back (soon I hope!)

Tony is the worst waiter I've had in quite a while.
I wanted to give this place a scathing review - but in actuality we just got a pathetic waiter. Once a few other parties came in I was able to hear the other waiters interact with their customers, they were helpful, informative and even friendly. The food was decent enough. The hanger steak was very flavorful and cooked perfectly and the tomato soup was great.

This place is small - it's in a train after all - so I'm sure he weren't busy. There were only a few other parties besides ours. Also, our table had a clear view through a window of the waiter station where he stood around and chatted.  Maybe he was just having an off day or maybe he just needs a thorough retraining. He was slow and grumpy.
We had to ask him if there was a daily appetizer. I knew there was because I had checked the website.  He said "ooh yea"
I also had to ask about the soup of the day and the pasta of the day.
We had to ask him for water refills twice before we got any.
I didn't see him the entire time we had our entrée, so I flagged down another waiter for help.
A couple next to us asked Tony if the A/C and music had been turned off.  He was argumentative and told the man that he was probably hot because of all of the alcohol he was drinking. ***REALLY***

And my last point is just something I couldn't omit.  The hostess should probably learn not to wear a low cut, loose fitting top if she's going to be bending over in front of the windows. I felt like my BF should have slipped her a dollar bill. Jk jk.

This would be a 5, but sometimes they get slammed and their service can be a little slow at times.

But this review is for my birthday last week which was awesome.  Started the evening with classic dirty martini from Jason at the bar. My wife had an awesome appletini.  Then seated in the rail car, we ordered the tomahawk rib eye along wtih a split of twice baked potato and vegetables from Tony, our server.  Bread was great with the small house salad that we split as well.  Ordered a bottle of Tobin James Ballistic Zinfandel, which was awesome.  Steak was perfectly medium rare!  We couldn't eat it all and took almost half of it home!  Then, they brought out a great dessert to surprise me, which had flames burning in one corner of the plate.  Then back to bar for after dinner drinks.  Great night!

By the way, this place is awesome for breakfast, too!

Left this place a little disappointed after coming in with expectations. To start, full disclosure, we came with a party of 4 on a Friday night with the TravelZoo deal.

I'll get the positives out of the way before going into the reason why the 2-star rating.
    - The ambiance of the restaurant was one of the reasons that attracted me to the deal. The old dining car setting was really well done.

    - We got seated promptly with our reservation time.

    - Live music that was provided was great, even with the occasional intoxicated patron trying to sing!

    - Food was actually pretty decent, not the best but still good.
    - Appetizers, we had the Pernod Scampi and Six Spice Ahi & Avocado Tataki. The tataki was excellent but we all agreed that while the Scampi was good, the taste reminded of us pho for some reason!
    - For soup and salads, I had the house salad while the others had the hearts of romaine, soup du Jour and the 'tomato, cucumbers & sweet red onions". No one had any real complaints and the way they pile the tomatoes in the last one was pretty nifty.
    - Entrees was a mix bag. 2 of us had the New York Steak and while they were cooked the way we ordered it wasn't anything special to it. There's a clear difference when ordering a NY steak from Ruth Chris and ordering one from here. A third person had the bone-in pork chops while the other had the salmon. Neither were terrible, but nothing special. Salmon was a nice taste but could have used a little more texture if it was grilled instead of it probably being baked.
    - Deserts for the most part were ok. The peanut butter creme brulee was interesting. Side note, we kept joking around how it would be funny it we could get jelly on the side with it for some "peanut butter jelly time!"... ok bad Family Guy reference lol.

Now on to the negatives and why we all agreed despite the decent food, it was a overall negative experience.
    - After being promptly seated by the host, we weren't given any menus which was odd but there was a reason to that... which leads me to the next point

    - After our server arrived a few minutes later and it was made clear that we had the TravelZoo deal he brought us their special menu designated for the deal. No biggie so after giving us the menu he left us to give us some time to look through it. One thing we noticed was that it wasn't the full menu but we figured we could probably pay the price difference if we wanted to upgrade to something else, like most other restaurants with our prior TravelZoo, Groupon, LivingSocial deals etc... However, we were wrong! Instead of just paying the few dollar difference for some items it would have been $10 per item to 'upgrade' even if it was just only a $1 more than our allotted '$28.95'.

    - Our biggest gripe however was with our service. After being greeted by our server, it wasn't until another 15 minutes til we saw him again so we could order AND it probably would'e been even longer if I didn't flag down the host informing her about it. Now, I know at times when a restaurant can get busy cause I use to work in one for 3 years and being a server for 2 of those years... however, it is unacceptable to ignore your table for over 15 minutes because if you know you were busy you should get someone to help you! What's worse was that we saw him come to another table of his 2 or 3 times but completely ignored us whereas we were watching another server in the vicinity hustling around to each of his table and constantly checking in with them. After finally ordering our entire meal, from appetizer to entree, we sat and waited for the food. Appetizers then soup/salads came at an acceptable amount of time. When it came to the soup/salads, however, our server did not offer us any fresh ground pepper and as soon as he dropped it off he promptly left. It doesn't look good when your fellow servers are seen with the large pepper mill offering their tables if they would like fresh ground pepper and you didn't bring it out, let alone even offer it to your diners. While waiting for our entrees, a few of us had empty drinks that took a while for them to be refilled. When the entrees were dropped off, the server didn't ask us if there was anything else we needed and not once during the meal did he check in on us during the meal. By the end we were just sitting and waiting and had to flag down a busboy/assistant to box our food for us. I think when our server noticed that the food were boxed up he realized it was time for dessert so we ordered and had that. We decided to skip the coffee/tea that was included because by the time we got to that point we had been at the table for a little over 2 hours and nearing 2.5 hours! The dismal service and never checking in on us by the server dragged out our dinner.

    - The worse part was that it wasn't a packed night with a few open tables but when you see another server hustling and providing excellent attention to other diners, you have to question what's up. Pity, it had potential.

I don't get the negative reviews regarding the food. I had the lamb, which was amazing. Succulent, well-seasoned & melt-in-your-mouth tender. The twice baked potato was really good too, and I cleared my whole plate. The watermelon cocktail I tried was delicious and refreshing (and the waiter forgot to charge me so, even better!)

The desserts left something to be desired. This place needs to have a couple standard fares like a rich chocolate souflee with ice cream, a normal slice of cake or a budino. We tried the root beer cake and it was kind of "meh" (and I'm a HUGE dessert person).

I will also say this: the service was a little shoddy. The server took forEVer to come to our table for each visit. I had to ask for menus, and it always felt like he just didn't have time to stop and listen to us when we needed something. Also, when I walked in, three people (the hostess and two waiters I assume?) were sitting on a couch in the front chatting and didn't bother getting up for me. I felt like I was interrupting their private party, and didn't realize they worked there at first. It's REALLY unprofessional to have your restaurant not represented when customers walk in.

They had live music, which was great- a jazz trio and singer, which really adds to the experience. I also really appreciated the ambience, although for a Saturday night this place was DEAD. This place just needs to hire some more professional staff, revamp their desserts and do some more publicity to get people in the door and they're good to go.

We just tried fhis restaurant for the very first time and we really enjoyed it!
We liked the location in an old rail car.  3 of us ordered the Filet and theyhad to be the best steaks we ever had.  They were very tender.  It was our daughter's birthday and they brought her a banana napolian with caramel sauce and whip cream.  Very good!
They also had a live group there that started at 8, that had a bluesy singer.  They were very good also. The only negative was that 2 of us ordered the twice baked potatoe and, I believe due to the smaller size, they were a little dry.  I would definitely recommend the garlic mashed potatoes and the roasted baby reds.
    We will definitely go again!

I'm not sure why so many people have negative things to say about this place. It seems it's mostly the people who get the coupon deals. I got a coupon deal (TravelZoo -- $55 for 4-course dinner for 2 people) and I had a great time here. The service was good and we tipped according to what the whole bill would be (which is what all of us with these coupon deals should do to avoid disgruntled servers!).

They sat us in the old train car. It's a really cool atmosphere, though very quiet. It's probably best not to gossip about the weird couple next to you because they will hear you.

We chose the mesquite charbroiled goat cheese tomatoes for our appetizer. I LOVE goat cheese. Unfortunately, the mesquite flavor way overwhelmed the goat cheese. I couldn't even taste the cheese. It felt like I was eating a barbecue grill. Too smokey for my taste.

Oh, the bread is surprinsingly good -- really flaky on the outside, but super soft on the inside.

I got the mixed organic baby greens for my salad. It was a really good for a starter salad -- good size, good dressing.

For my entree, I got the salmon. The salmon was the star of my meal. The bearnaise sauce was so creamy and delicious -- probably one of the best pieces of fish I've had. I loved the sides too -- creamed corn (mmm), veggies, and a twice-baked potato (done to crispy-outside-but-soft-inside perfection).

I was so full that I just got the raspberry sorbet for dessert. Tasty, but nothing special. Try to save room because the dessert list is impressive.

I'd recommend this place to anyone looking for a good date spot, or somewhere to bring the parents. Downtown San Juan Capistrano is super cute and you won't find a restaurant quite like this anywhere nearby.

Let's get the positives away first so I can spend a  little more time on the negatives. Great location, right at the train station so you could take the train and be right there. And parking is not really a problem either. After dinner, take a stroll and see the Mission or just people watch. The interior is just as interesting, train cars with decor from the '40s and '50's tastefully done. The restrooms are very clean and the staff very helpful and pleasant. We had the ahi tuna and avocado appertizer. I had the Cesar salad and Top Sirloin and my wife had the Cream of Brocoli soup and the Pork Chops...huge portions, My wife loved the fresh bread and the twice baked potatoes.

Now for the negatives, The Cesar salad made too much dressing and both the steak and the pork chops were a little dry and tough. The service could of been better. We had to wait for our waiter to arrive even though at 3:30 there really wasn't much of a crowd. We had to ask for the list of beverages and dessert list. We also had to ask for our check and there was a bit of wait for the dessert. BUT, all and all the positives outweighed the negatives and I think we'll be back but for lunch instead for dinner

    I'd give it 4.5 stars.

We bought a 4 person groupon/travelzoo coupon which consisted of 2 appetizers, 4 soups or salads, 4 entree's, 4 desserts and 4 coffees for 100 bucks.

Our group of 4 enjoyed the ambiance of the pullman car. It's a pretty interesting restaurant and really enjoyable.
The 2 appetizers were on point! Seared Ahi + Avacado and the Shrimp Scampi were delicious. The Beef+Barley soup was also well done, and the spinach salad received praise also.

Now the entree, we all got the 12oz (+$5 from an 8oz) New York Steak, with the twice baked potato. Delicious!!! nice and hot, cooked to perfection (med. rare). The creamed corn was awesome also!!!

Now the desserts!!!! We split 4 different desserts - and they were amazing!!!! The root beer float cake was our favorite, but i have a soft spot for the peanut butter creme-brulee.

Amazing place, and a great value with a coupon. Our bill was 166.00 with the coupon (bottle of wine and steak upsells...) It wouldve been about 350 with tax+tip at regular prices.

Great place. Give it a go. Service was pretty good too.

This is an awesome date place. Tucked into old town San Juan Capistrano, and utilizing part of an old Pullman car, this steakhouse serves up delicious steak and continental cuisine.

Dining in the Pullman car requires a special reservation, and it's a cozy and intimate area. There isn't too much room to walk between the tables, so the main dining area may feel better for claustrophobes or if you frequently have to get up.

I ordered the Filet Mignon, which is my go-to cut for nice steakhouses. The Vintage Steakhouse's version of this meat is very good. I asked for "pink, with no red" and it was prepared just within my tolerance. Although our server was nice enough to bring out three different sauces (Wild Mushroom Bordelaise, Béarnaise, and Cabernet Demi), I actually found that I liked the steak better without any of the sauces.
I wasn't crazy about the wine list, but with only one glass it wasn't that big of a deal.

The service here was fantastic, if a little bewildering -- at one point we counted four different people who had been by to take our drink order, food order, refill our water, and ask how everything was. We never seemed to see the same person twice.

Overall a great date place with fantastic ambiance, really good food, and excellent service.

This place has great service, great atmosphere and better food than Gemmell's (surprisingly its from the same owner as Gemmells).

    we had:

Ahi sashimi---simply amazing with the ponzu sauce.

    twice baked potatoes---to die for.

cream of corn---epic fail, I've had better in cans.

steak---amazing, juicy, tender, medium rare, hearty and a huge portion.
-bechamel sauce: too acidic and quite bland.
-Sherry sauce/mushroom sauce: the taste profiles were too similar, seems as though there were too much of corn starch to create the consistency of the sauce, but it killed the taste, the mushroom sauce tasted like the sherry sauce with mushrooms  stirred in.

root beer cake float---rich and unforgetable. I felt extremely guilty after having this and felt like I would get diabetes after. However, it is a perfect break up dessert if you ever have relationship problems because while you're eating it, you'll forget your bf for that moment, and after, your mind would be filled with ways to try to lose weight.
needs more root beer because it is a bit dry and the cake can be a lot more moist.

peanut butter creme brulee--very peanut buttery and a little too sweet for my taste. Definitely impossible to finish one all by yourself.

bottle of malbec---the per glass options are horrible and have little to choose from, but the cheapest bottle of wine still goes great with the steak.

My bf loved the ambiance though, but I was kind of pissed that they forgot my reservation even though I booked 1 month in advance. Good thing they seated me within 5 minutes or this review would have went to shit.

This place is Stellar!  My girlfriend is getting married right around the corner so walked over not excited with anticipation of what we were going to order.  When we walked in we were greeted right away, and as we were being seat, we had been going on about how hungry we were, the host suggested the Champagne Brunch (AMAZING)!  Our waiter, Charlie, was a blast and right on point with his suggestions.

A MARVELOUS ambiance with EXCEPTIONAL service!!!

Like everyone dining near my table and many yelpers here, I used a coupon. I'm not certain but I believe there is a different (and higher priced?) menu for the couponers, which I gather is a large portion of Vintage's business.

It was a mediocre experience with good moments and not great moments; but overall, I felt that I got the value for my money. On the other hand, had I paid what they claimed to be the true value of my meal, I'd have been way disappointed.

    BESTS:
The ambience. Eating in a true train car, beneath the pull down beds with period styled lighting & decor, candelight and white table cloths: can't beat that! Without the ambience, much of my dining enjoyment would have been lost.

    WORSTS:
Food inconsistencies. In a nutshell, some of our courses were delightful (pernod scampi appetizer, cinnamon cream puff pastry), some were mixed (pork loin was juicy & well cooked but the overwhelmingly sweet sauce kinda spoiled it for me) and others were average (both salads we tried, new york steak, apple blossom dessert).

Service Inconsistencies: We had 3 people serving us which was fine but made for a lot of traffic in a cramped boxcar: One server was super friendly, one was quiet yet efficient and the main waiter was a bit of a moody jerk who took the final check off our table before we were finished dining. Isn't that in the Waiter 101 "Don't Do" list? He also raised his voice to one of the other servers (an underling, I gathered) in front of everyone dining. Wow. That's probably on the list too.

Hostess: Can someone tell this gal that her "I have better things to do" attitude when I enter and the "I'm bored" swagger while she leads me to my seat is unprofessional? I'm sorry your mom & dad make you hold down a night job, but maybe if you acted like you enjoyed it, you would! Customer service can be fun. Try it.

What a treat!  We bought a "Living Social" dinner for two, I'd heard nice things about the Vintage so I thought, "let's give it a go!".  We went down for an anniversary dinner and were not disappointed!

First let me admit I LOVE TRAINS! So I'm a bit of a sucker for the whole ambiance thing.  We were seated in the train car, very nice accommodations, romantic and quiet. We ordered up a martini, perfect! And proceeded to peruse the menu.  Simple but just up our alley, although the wine menu was very nice with both domestic and foreign selections.  We shared the ahi & avocado appetizer, YUMM, then I had the cucumber, tomato & red onion salad.  It was a nice presentation but I ended up chopping it all up to make that perfect bite... which it was.  We both had the New York steak, prepared perfectly and served with three different sauces to choose from, nice each bite could be a different sauce.  Veggies were prepared fresh and just right.  Dessert?  Yep, we loved it too!

Off to the restroom, where I found it to be clean and the best part?  The automatic paper dispenser actually dispensed 18" of paper not the usual piddly paper that makes you wait for more.  With my hands dry I returned to the table where our "left-overs" had been boxed up and were ready to go.

Our server was attentive, not too, but on top of all our needs.  We will be back!

Tried this place with a Spreebird deal, found out that I couldn't use it on Saturday, ugh of course not, so had to come back again.
Food and service was eh the 1st time.  Ordered the lamb, not good.  Much worse the 2nd time.  Both entrees over-cooked (Pork Loin and New York Steak) bland and service was awful. The only item that was tasty both visits was the Pernod Scampi appetizer.  3 good things: Ambiance, live jazz, Pernod Scampi

My wife and I found ourselves rehabbing a house in historic old San Juan.  We frequent Sarducci's, the restaurant next door, for breakfast on a regular bases.  We had noticed the Vintage and wanted to try it.

Showed up on a Saturday with no reservation.  Got seated right away, in one of the railroad cars.  Cute little place, with very quick service.  I ordered the prime rib steak, twice baked potato and a cucumber salad.

Now the cucumber salad, was a third of a cucumber, a couple of slices of tomato and red onion.  At $8.80 was kind of a rip, but very good.  The steak was $35.00 and was delicious, barbecued over a wood fire.  Expensive, yes, good absolutely, worth the money, very much so.  Now the twice baked potatoes, delicious.

Thumbs up for an expensive night out.

My wife had the salmon plate, ate every bite, like a ravenous bear pulling salmon from a river.  Must have really like it!  She ordered an apple blossom for dessert eating every bite, so much for her diet.  She gave the Vintage a thumbs up too.

The antique, train car dining room, is the only reason this place earns 3 big ones!!! So cool! You feel so...old gangster here! Like "Where's my Tommy gun?"!!!! Old San Juan is full of great places to explore and that's what drew me to The Vintage.

I went with my fiance and although we ordered an appetizer and desert, I left hungry! For a high price, you get a steak and a choice of potato, but that's really it.  The ap we ordered was wild mushrooms (their specialty) of the day. They were tasty but,  small and not filling. I honestly don't remember my steak (not a good sign). The peanut butter creme brulee was very good. They often have groupons/deals but even they are not worth the money....To me at least! Oh and if you are a surf and turf fan as I am, skip this place! They have the highest price in town! $76

I normally don't write reviews, but there were a lot of negative reviews here that I felt this place deserved a better rating. My husband and I went there for dinner Saturday night, with a groupon (probably would never have been here without it). We had an amazing time! From the start the staff was incredibly friendly - the hostesses and servers greeted us as we walked in and were seated. Our server was fantastic - gave us his suggestions, which were excellent. The owner even came around and chatted with us for a few minutes - and as a frequenter of the Masto's/Fleming's steakhouses, this is rare.

Started our with the trout appetizer (excellent). My husband had the Caesar salad and I the mixed baby greens (both of which were on par with most places in Orange County). I ordered the Filet Mignon and my husband the New York. The steaks were cooked to order (we prefer medium rare) and the sauces (which we usually don't like) made the steak.

The atmosphere was great - they had a jazz band playing the night we were there. I have to thank Groupon for making us try something new. We probably would never have gone here without it, but this is now in our list of local places we plan on dining at.

I'm not really sure how this place stays in business.

After we sat down, we had to wait 10 minutes to even get a menu.  (And there were staff members just standing around doing nothing.  There must have been the same amount of diners to staff members.  We knew we should have just walked out at this point.)

After our drink order was placed, we had to wait about 10 minutes to get our drinks.

The food took about 45 minutes to arrive and was horrible.  (People who came in after us got their main entrees before us.  Not sure how that happened.)

Wife and I ordered New York Steak.  Her's medium well and mine was medium.  Her's arrived well done and very hot.  Mine arrived very rare and warm.  Both steaks were very chewy.   Most of the food was very salty and had way too much butter.

The best thing we had was an organic baby greens salad and the second best thing was the rolls.

We both did not finish our food.  I sent more then 80% of my food back. I complained to the waiter who told me that New York steaks are sometimes difficult to cook.  This is surprising as this is supposed to be a "steakhouse."  I was given a $20 gift certificate when we got the bill.  I knew we would not be returning ever, so I just left it.

I wondered if the other reviewers (who gave more than 2 stars) and I were eating in the same restaurant.  I double checked the address and indeed it is.

It is unfortunate, because I really liked the atmosphere of the location and the decor.  I really, really wanted to like the place.

I have never written online review and I felt I had to write this review to avoid others spending $100 on terrible food and terrible service.  It was a special occasion for us this evening and it just completely ruined it.  Rather than remembering the special occasion, we will just remember how bad our experience at The Vintage was.
