Loved it! Try the veggie pizza! If there is a wait ( usually they're is) be patient and wait! It is definitely worth it. I would wait as long as I needed to for the good food here. Lots of fun for a group or on a date. Find out what the fresh fish of the day is, I have had really good luck with ordering this in the past and it is super fresh.
Review Source:Best wings around! I've been coming here for years and I honestly have to say, the food as of late has really started to become amazing. Fresh catch of the day along with daily specials. My favorite meal there is either the Irish chicken parm, or Buffalo chicken Mac and Cheese. They also have The Jeff Parker Burger which is simply perfect on every level.
There's always something going on there, whether it's for a Boston sports game or fundraisers or just a weekend night; it's bound to be busy. Not to mention 50 cent wings for every bruins game!
I love the atmosphere there the most though. The bartenders and servers really make you feel welcomed which gives it a nice environment that I personally would compare to Cheers!
It's too bad for all of the harsh reviews on here. Waxy's seems to have been slapped with a bad rap. I would challenge anyone who previously had questions about Waxy's to go back and experience these improvements. I guarantee you will have a different opinion upon leaving.
We hadn't been to Waxy's in a while because the food had gone way down hill. Â We heard they recently hired a new chef and decided to pop by. Â We got the wings...they were very good. Â However, their draft beer was rancid. Â We tried BlueMoon, Sam Summer, Miller Light--all bad....so we switched to bottled beer. Â A little while later a few folks sat a few seats down from us and were experiencing the same draft beer issues that we had...they chose two different beers than listed above...they, too, settled on bottled beer. Â It's sad. Â A bar that can't pour a decent tasting draft.
Review Source:Jessica B, your review sounds suspiciously like the others about Waxys.
While they may have not had the best food in the past, they have improved drastically lately. Just last weekend i had some of the best steamers i have EVER had. My wife had the veggie pizza which was anything but boboli... In fact she loved the thin crust and tons of fresh veggies. Id recommend Waxys to anyone...
Cold Sam Summer and Steamers... Dosnt get much better!
Clean your tap lines!  Ordered a Sam Adams Alpine Spring, known for a crisp finish.  However, at Waxy's it tasted like stale Budweiser.  I could  overlook the lousy service if the beer was fresh, but the combination of poor service and nasty beer was a deal breaker.  Went to another establishment a few miles away, and had a great pint of Alpine Spring.
Review Source:Stopped in the Saturday before St. Patrick's Day. Â We were hesitant as we thought it might be crowded, big weekend in the Boston area. The place was pretty empty. No biggie, we thought we were kind of lucky. Â Well, we weren't.
Grabbed a seat at the bar and waited. About 5 minutes in we heard someone tell us he would be with us in a minute, so we waited. Â When he took our drink orders we told him we'd like to see the menu. Â Drinks came, no menu. Â Should have taken this starter experience as a hint.
Apparently the person who pulled us our drafts was the "general manager" and he was trying to do 15 different things at once. Â Fine, I get that, but have enough waitstaff and bartenders on an average Saturday, let alone the one before St. Patrick's Day. Â All they really needed was a full staff for a Saturday by the looks of the crowd.
When we got our menus, we waited and waited, no one checked to see if we wanted to order. Â That was fine, because we had made up our minds to leave. Â See, the beer was off, and we each got two different beers, one Smithwick's and one Sam Adams. Â We know our beer, and it was not good here. I think their tap lines need serious cleaning.
We left and went to a real Irish pub and had good beers from clean tap lines. Â Had some good fish & chips and a Reuben. Â In an area with tons of Irish places, don't go here, you can do so much better. Â So can they, too bad they don't care to.
The service was good. Â Found the waitress to be pleasant and attentive. We were not too happy with the food. Â I got the pastrami toasty. Â They use a grilled Texas type toast that was real good. Â However the pastrami was thick fatty and chewy. Â So bad that I could not even eat it. Â The fries were mush. Â I left hungry. Â My wife had the fish and chips just ok. Â The beer was good cold and fresh. Â Acoustics poor hard to hear.
Review Source:My friends and I were looking for a place to meet halfway between where we live to watch the Syracuse - Georgetown game on Saturday afternoon. Â We decided on this place. Â My wife and I arrived first and ordered a basket of fries and a veggie pizza. Â
Fries--The fries were the highlight of the afternoon. Â They were your average deep-fried dish.
Pizza--It was a lot like my mother used to make growing up. Â The problem with this is that my mother didn't have tons of time, money, and she wasn't a professional cook. Â The crust was pretty bad and the sauce tasted like spaghetti sauce...maybe Prego.
Then, our friends arrived. Â We all ordered beer and they grabbed some nachos. Â Nachos were a little below average, but not horrible. Â The beer was fine.
The reason for the one-star rating belongs completely to the bartender. Â At this point, our game had come on and there was a NASCAR pre-race discussion being played over the sound system. Â We politely asked if he would mind putting the SU-G'Town sound on. Â This is where things got downright bizarre.
He replied, "You want to know how much people down here care about college basketball? Zero! I would kill myself if I had to turn that on! Â I was just about to turn on the music. Â Do you hate me now? Â What are you gonna do about it!? Â How does that make you feel?"
I replied, "I probably won't come back here to watch a game again."
From that point on, it took us 15 minutes to get our check and we moved on to a different bar. If this fella is going to get this upset over one game, who knows what he may do during March Madness.
We had just finished running the 10K in Foxboro, we quickly searched for a place to grab a cold beer and food. Â Waxy O'connors sounded like a great spot, it was by far the worst service experience I have ever had. Â From the minute we walked in we were treated like Second Class citizens, the waitress was so rude. Â She had the nerve to mention to us how the restaurant was understaffed and that we had to deal with it. Â Awful awful experience I'll never go back, it needs new management.
Review Source:This place is a disgrace. Â All I wanted was a proper pint of Guinness and this "Irish" bar couldn't even do that. Â I am the only one sitting at the bar and was completely ignored while my poorly poured pint sat idling. Â He straight poured it (all at once) so u don't know why he let it settle in the dish. Â I could see it and the poor pour. The window in the door has been shattered for about 2 months now so they clearly don't care about appearance. Â This place blows. Â All I wanted was a Guinness. Just a Guinness. Â And they wouldn't give it to me. Â Just a Guinness. Â I must say, the bartender did have a sense if humor, he actually asked if I would like a menu..... Bahahahahahaha!!!!
Review Source:I tried Waxys when it 1st opened and had a miserable experience. I contacted the owner who seemed very interested in making it right. It took me a long time to re-try Waxys, just last week and found it not much better. First I waited at thr bar fot more than 5 mins before I was waited on. When thr bar tender came to the bar, he was outside on the patio, he was very nice and even helped me read the menu (I forgot my glasses). I ordered the reuben which I felt was filled with the corned beef crumbs from the bottom of the pot. The fries were delicious. Total check, Â wiyh cokes, $12.00 ish. All I could think was, dinner HAS to be better than this? Should I try a 3rd time? I really want to like the place, Im local? Help-give me a reason to like WAXYS!
Review Source:Having viewed the Phantom's review of Waxy's in Foxboro, we decided to head on over there after work yesterday. We got there before the Friday night crowd came, so it was very low key at 5 pm. We sat at the bar and ordered the angus burger with cheese, which came with a side of fries. The 1/2 pound burgers were satisfactory with good flavor and the fries were nice and crispy good. Service was attentive and polite and fast. Â If we want a local place to go for a good burger, this is the place for us. I would say a good couple notches up from 5 guys - burger wise.
There are a few more things I would like to try here - like the shepherds pie, the beef stew and possibly the steak tips. Â I am surprised the yelpers have been hard on the reviews, both TV Diner and Phantom has been there and the food seems to be good.
We will definately come back. Â Good looking out Waxy's.
Big Pauly
Good spot for beer drinking and watching acoustic guitar entertainment. Found bartenders to be friendly. Food is average. Sorry, not a big Irish food fan but it wasn't bad. Yes...agree it's two different places: the late night 10pm+ crowd vs the laid back drinking place in the afternoon and early evenings. Depending your age group you may or may not find the 10pm+ crowd appealing.
Review Source:Good spot for drinks, patio is pretty good sized too for nice days/evenings. Â It gets over-crowded at night (after 10pm) and includes cover charge and even a line. Â
We like it for a 7pm drink and app as it's empty at that time. Â Good place to watch a game and have a beer. Â They have dart boards and a pool table, but neither are usable late at night due to over-crowding.
Food is average for a bar. Â Nothing to write home about, but serviceable none-the-less.
I live only about a mile from here so I was excited when this place opened a couple years ago. Â Unfortunately, I gave it three tries and none of them were very good. Â The food is pretty bad, even for pub food; either completely bland or way over-salted, depending on what you order. Â Beer selection is subpar for a pub of this size. Â The decor is nice but I found that the place is either completely dead (daytime) or overcrowded (nighttime). Â I had high hopes, but unfortunately it was not to be.
Review Source:Totally agree on it being two separate places. I haven't been here for their night time but the place is huge. It is easily as big as the huge downtown Boston bars. I can see how it would get packed as there aren't any good ones out in the burbs.
I went here for lunch with my mom and it was completely empty. The lunch menu was good but I was bummed that they didn't have nachos. They are such an Irish bar staple in MA but I guess they are trying to be more authentic. I had a mediterranean tuna wrap with fries and my mom had the Ruben with sweet potato fries. It was a total of $28 with two drinks and tip.
The one bummer was that another waiter asked if I wanted a refill on my diet coke. I said sure and he took my half full glass. Then I got charged for two drinks. If you charge for refills, I have a firm policy that you should bring a new glass or make sure I'm finished with the first. I don't want to be charged for two when I'm only getting one and a half. This is a huge pet peeve of mine at $2.50 a soda. The food was really reasonable in price so it made up for it.
If it wasn't completely full or charging a cover, it would probably be a cool restaurant to go to dinner at. It's a club at night so stick with Finnegan's Wake or Fitzy's for your food.
I think that Waxy's is 2 very different places - the restaurant place, and the nighclub-esque place. From what I've been reading, the local authorities want the nightclub aspects to go away, so I'm not entirely sure that the things I like about Waxy's will hold true for the future.
Regardless: this (was?) the place to go if you wanted a Boston/Providence type night out, but didn't want to have to haul your suburban self to the city. Crowded? Sure. Pricey drinks? No doubt. A Friday/Saturday cover charge? Oh yes. But nothing that you aren't going to find at any similar sort of place in the city. We love getting out once every few months to see Oddysey and The Brass Daddies play - such a fun band, and they seem to have a standing, once a month gig at Waxy's. The crowd is always sort of a mix, ranging from early 20's to 50's, with the younger crowd seeming to congregate on the non-music side. The patio is has partial plastic sides, which I'm sure the smokers appreciate during the winter, but it does make it somewhat unbearable out there for non-smokers. I can't comment on the food, other than the french fries - they were absolutely amazing one night at midnight. We always have a good time when we go to Waxy's, even if it's not the sort of good time that we want to have all that often anymore.
I live about 15 minutes away, and I do like to pop in here from time to time. During the day, or on a weeknight, it's a great place- friendly bartenders, good drinks, nice enclosed/attached smoking area, and good people. But on a Friday or Saturday night, I stay away. The cover is too high (sometimes $10), it's WAY too packed, you have a hard time getting a drink because of how busy it is, the music is too loud and the crowd is young and aggressive. It's just not fun. If you take a date here you are better off doing it on a Saturday afternoon, you'll have a much better time!
Review Source:I was in Boston in December, most notably Dedham for my cousin's wedding. There were a lot of things I wanted to do, see, and experience which of course I wasn't able to. So many things, and so little time.
The one thing that frustrated me a little was the lack of nightlife in the area I was staying in, but then again, you put a big city girl in a not so big city and you start to go crazy. One night my cousins and I were practically trolling the area to find something to do. We ended up at a bowling alley in the Dedham mall, which was cool... it seemed like this was "the place to be."
So after the wedding in Canton, that night we partnered up with our new family and decided we wanted to have a night out. We asked them about a place that they usually go to, and they recommended Waxy's. Intrigued and thirsty, we all went. Didn't know what to expect.
What I did see though was what I was looking for... an awesome crowd! This place reminded me of something I'd see in SF. Sure it's probably not a real "pub" or anything like that, but the atmosphere was what I wanted to experience while on that side of the country. There was live music, drinks, people dancing, people, and more people! Everyone was having a good time. Me and my new family ended up getting tanked and had a good time. We also met a new friend, who was actually 18 and a student at Texas Tech. How he got in, we do not know. We wish we added him as a friend on facebook before he got escorted out.
After the party let out, we were pleasantly surprised to see that there was a huge grill outside for afterparty snacks! This was exciting for us because we are huge "bacon wrapped hot dog after the clubs let out" fans. It didn't look like they were bacon wrapped, but there was food, and it was awesome. Although we decided to venture out because we wanted some other food. Also because we didn't want to wait for food. Because we were hungry. But I must say, you should probably wait for the food because we drove around looking for food and nothing was open. We ended up eating at the hotel. Sigh.
All in all, it was a good time. Waxy's served its purpose. It was a good time with new family, new friends, and new drinks. It was like a home away from home.
I walked in on a cold night, sat at the bar and asked the bartender for a cold beer, shepards pie and a kind word. Â He gave me a tasty Guiness and I asked "what about the kind word" ..... he answered "don't order the shepards pie". Â At leasts that's what I wish had happened. Â
I've been here several times before and it's usually noise, crowded and with average food at best. Â
The pie sucked and the only thing that's barely worth while is the beer and a sports game on TV.
I went with some friends for dinner and won't be back. We were seated right by the door. We asked to move to get out of the draft but were told that everything else was reserved. We ended up eating with our coats on. The food was salty and cold. And overpriced. As for the music, it was so loud we couldn't hear the server when she told us the specials. We couldn't hear each other to have a conversation. We just hurried through the meal and went down the street where we could relax and talk over a drink. We were celebrating a birthday of someone who really wanted to try it. Otherwise, we would have left right at the beginning.
Review Source:I came here for the first time to meet some friends as it's not all that close to me. They carded me at the door so I provided my ID, which is of me with much longer hair than I have now. The bouncer looked at it and decided that he needed to see more ID because of the hair thing (when even the TSA didn't need to when I flew last weekend). Fine. A couple of people had asked me that before at other places, so I provided it. The bouncer then asks me if I am drunk and if "they're letting me drive." I had had ZERO alcohol at this point nor was I on any sort of drugs or showing him ANY reason to ask this. I tell him I've had no alcohol and I'm just here to meet friends and have a couple of beers at most. He asks if I'm sure, and asks if I'm here to make trouble. What? Why would he ask that? I don't even look like a troublemaker. I have never been refused entry or thrown out of any establishment, and I have never started or even been in a fight in my life.
Review Source:Ok, so I'm an outsider; I don't live in the Boston ADI. Â So perhaps you take my view with a grain of blarney:
Some say it's not really Irish. Â Yet I was served by a man who was definitely from Ireland.
Some say it is a meat market. Â If that's so, then the market is definitely soft, Â for I saw no wooing of the opposite sex from either sex. Â Nor did I see any obviously single people who were desirous of flirtation. Â Not that I was searching, mind you.
Some say the food is not good. Â Ok...I didn't eat.
Here's what I experienced:
-Outdoor seating.
-Prompt, courteous service.
-An authentically imported Irish guy who knew my companions. Â Ok, they work across the street, but he's still got the brogue & brings the Guiness. Â And Harp's. Â And Jameson's.
Really, oh naysayers, what more do you want? Â A souvenir from County Cork? Â A really good limerick that doesn't start with "There once was a man from Nantucket"?
I mean they have coasters with mind puzzles. Â Go Irish.
You used to be able to buy pitchers of beer for cheap, but they banned that because people were getting too drunk and getting pulled over by the cops. (Surprise surprise...the damn police station is across the street!) So not only have pitchers been banned, but on any given night you will constantly see undercover cops walking around making sure no one is getting out of hand or causing problems.
Waxy's no longer has Karaoke night on Wednesdays! Thursday is DJ/Ladies night. The DJ is actually one of the staff members of the restaurant named Joe. He is pretty good. He caters to the crowd, and if you have an iPod and request a song he doesn't have, he will borrow your iPod to play the song on his iPod DJ table set up. Every Friday and Sat there is usually a live band and a 5 dollar cover charge. (just FYI, there are no cover charges on Wed or Thurs) The bands range from lackluster to downright horrible. You don't come here for the live music, that is for sure.
There is a rather large outdoor patio with TV's, plenty of tables and seats, and an outdoor bar. You can smoke out on the patio which usually turns me off from going out there. I don't like smelling like smoke.
Thursday thru Sat the place is packed to the brim by 10:30 p.m. It can be VERY loud and if you are just looking to eat some food I would go early or just avoid the weekend days altogether. The crowd at Waxy's tends to be pretty young, which equates to "annoying d-bags" But for the most part it's tolerable and not that bad.
Food ranges from ok to excellent depending on what you get. Of course, most of the food tends to be Irish dishes but they have your usual bar favorites (pizza and wings) I highly recommend the "Bangers and Mash" Good stuff! And while you are eating there is definitely NO shortage of TV's to watch your favorite sports games on.
The bartenders are just "ok" Don't start asking for complicated drinks because they won't be good at making them and sometimes you have to explain to them how to make them. They are really good at just basic 2 to 3 liquor drinks and serving beers. That is about it. My GF sticks to wine because they usually can't get her drinks right. (p.s. DO NOT get anything with pineapple juice in it. It comes in some mini Red Bull-like can and every time we have got a drink with it, it's been expired or just tastes horrible and ruins the entire drink with it's overpowering flavor)
There is a decent sized function room for private functions and birthdays, a pool table, and decent bathrooms.
Personally, this went from being a 5-star place to just being "ok" I hope to see them make some changes in the future.
I went here on a Friday recently and enjoyed myself. My boyfriend & I went to grab a bite and drink. We arrived around 8:30 and the parking lot was full, it was pretty busy but we had no problem getting a seat in their outdoor patio. We each had a beer and I had a HUGE Caesar salad & he had a sandwich, the bill was reasonable. I'm definitly looking forward to going back.
Review Source:This place is not an Irish Pub. More like an Applebee's with a few shamrock's thrown in.
I went on a Thursday night recently with my wife. We were seated in a small dining room off to the side. No problem there, but the hostess seated us as far away from the fireplace as possible in that room (it was a frigid night so a fireplace is nice) which was strange , because we were the only people in that room. We asked to be moved next to the fireplace and they said fine.
I ordered a Shepard's Pie and that was good. My wife had baked scrod and that was good as well. The Guiness was well poured.
All in all it was OK, but if you're looking for an Irish pub atmosphere, this place strikes out. I don't know if I'll ever go back. Food was decent, but I can't get past the fake atmosphere.
I've been to Waxy's a few times(usually for drinks) and went last night for dinner before a night of crazyness with some friends and the food was amazing and our waitress couldn't have been better! If you dont like the crowded loud party scene definatly dont go here Thurs-Sat nights. The live bands are great and the dj, Joe is awesome, such a great guy and plays a wide variety of music and if he doesn't have what you wanna hear he promises to have it next time. In my opinion Waxy's is pretty much the greatest thing that ever happened to the Foxboro area! :)
Review Source:I have to agree with others that this place gets REALLY packed on Fri/Sat nights and can get loud when the bands are on. Â Just like some Fanueil Hall bars. Â I think it is because the Foxboro, Sharon areas were so deprived of bars for so many years people now have some place to drink and have fun. Â So if you are from the area it is a nice change of pace and if you are from Boston or the Boston area don't bother going because it is nothing you haven't seen. Â
One thing I will say that it is really nice inside. Â Fireplaces, spacious, good tvs and I heard they even brought in the wood work from Ireland. The food is ok. Â
In addition, if you are into the "cougar scene" than this might be your place:-)
If you like patio... or karaoke... or bands.. it's all in here.
I came here on a karaoke night, not intentionally since I can't sing at all. The patio is pretty nice with a bar conveniently situation at the patio.
The buffalo wings are mediocre at best. It was a bit too dry for my palette. My friends seem to enjoy the fish and chips.
If you don't like noisy atmosphere, don't come here on weekends cuz that's when they have the live band.
We went on a Friday night. Big mistake. The bar was packed but we got a table away from the band. It was too loud to carry on a conversation. There were women screaming and yelling at the bar. We got appetizers and they were mediocre at best. I have been to several Irish pubs in Boston and Ireland. This is the worst one so far. It is a bar and not a place like the 99 to get a meal and talk to others at the table. I shall not return!
Review Source:I went here a few months ago for a friend's bday- her boyfriend's band was playing here, so I trekked out to check it out.
My sister and I were greeted by 40+ year old ladies in the parking lot, who said to us "Looks like we have some competition tonight!!" Um, OK. I actually turned to my sister and said "Please tell me this is not a karaoke place!" She said "No, Kristin, those were cougars." Eek.
So we walk inside and the place is PACKED. I'm talking Fanueil Hall-on- a -Saturday -night -at -midnight -during -college- spring -weekend packed. We could barely move, let alone get near the bar. But we managed to saddle our way over to the bar eventually. The bar is really big, by the way, and takes up multiple rooms, if that makes sense.
The crowd: most of the women were 35+, most of the men were under 30. The women were dressed to kill, the guys were in jeans and T-shirts.
Overall I found the beers to be overpriced, the place to be too crowded, and the crowd was no my scene. The only way I would justify going here was if I lived in the area and there was literally NOWHERE else to go.
If you're a young professional living outside Boston who wants to feel like you're in Boston this is a great place. Â Otherwise steer clear. Â
Some things to expect:
1) You're not getting "pub-fare" prices. Â The prices aren't entirely unreasonable, but you could get the same food at any other bar for 10% less.
2) The portions may be slightly smaller than you expect. Â I'm all for smaller portion sizes, but when you get your meal and you can still see half the plate you're in trouble.
3) If it's a weekend it's going to be loud.
4) The beer selection isn't that great. Â The BBC is a few miles away and has at least five times as many beers available. Â
5) The beer isn't cheap either.
6) In the short time that this place has been open I've heard of 3 people being charged incorrect amounts or having drinks they did not order added to their bill. Â Check your bill and you might consider paying in cash.
This place is a complete disappointment. Â
For a similar "pack 'em in" youth bar atmosphere you should check out the British Beer Company a few miles up Rte 1. Â You'll be paying the same amount, but they've got better beers, better food, and you won't have to worry about getting ripped off.
For a real neighborhood pub atmosphere you should check out the Chieftain a few miles south on Rte 1, or Finnegan's Wake in Walpole center. Â These places aren't as new, but they've got loads of character and the food is great.
