I really wanted to like this winery. Â I just couldn't. Â I can forgive a winery for not having any wines that I enjoy (they all seemed to taste very acidic and a lot of minerals). Â But I can't forgive for the person pouring the wines not giving information about where they get their grapes, what their whole "make your own wine" thing is, or just providing some general information about the winery. Â We told her we hadn't been there before and we got nada. Â Super sad! Â Oh well....at least there are plenty of other wineries to go enjoy in the area.
Review Source:Indoor "winery" in the middle of a shopping center with Harris Teeter and Subway.
Basically a wine bar where you can purchase bottles. Probably would not go out of my way to come back here.
One spacious room with a square bar in the center. It was nice doing the tasting, but I was surprised they used the same cup for the "tasting," and barely rinsed it out unless we were switching from red to white. At other wine bars, they gave me separate glasses for each wine.
I was not impressed with the cheese plate, probably the saddest cheese plate I've had. The presentation didn't look great. I could have probably done a better cheese plate at home.
I think they had free finger food catered by some restaurant next door, but all was left was some salsa. They didn't even bother to clean out the empty trays at the end of the night.
We happen to be sitting in between two really drunk men who were completely out of it (came separately) and the bar chairs were a little two close to each other so that made us a bit uncomfortable. Most of the clientele were professionals 30s/40s, and then a sprinkle of older men.
Came here last night on date. The wine and the service were amazing! Our waitress was so helpful and friendly. She even recommended that we buy their Groupon on my phone. We did and we had a discount on the tasting, $10 off a bottle, and 2 free glasses. Ended up walking out with 4 bottles of wine (and a good buzz). You can bring in your own food and I was allowed to use my electronic cigarette inside. Huge fan of their Peach Chardonnay, Green Apple Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc. Everything  we tried was pretty tasty though. I can't wait to come back here again.
Review Source:The Winery at Olney is not necessarily a destination for out of towners. Â We put this on our list to visit on a recent winery/vineyard tour in the area and were really disappointed when we navigated to a shopping center in the middle of town. Â
We tried it anyway based on the good reviews and were really let down by both the wine and the service. Â Red wine enthusiasts like myself may find that somehow ALL of the red wines had the same taste. Â Perhaps this is because they make them all onsite in a tiny room off to the side (or, at least that's what I overheard from a couple seats down at the bar where people were experiencing better service; I can't claim to really know anything about their wine making process because we were never told). Â This would have been less offensive if the common taste was a good one, but it turned out they were all really sweet, which is not a quality I look for when I ask for a dry red.
The atmosphere was actually great. Â The place looks really nice with a large bar in the middle and high tops around the sides, with a few comfy couches in the front. Â If I lived in town (and they had better wine) I'd probably drop in to have a glass and read a bit, but likely wouldn't make it a date night or night out.
The service was an issue. Â Our waiter was only a few hours into his first shift---Kudos to Lee because he did really try to help us out and was a personable guy. Â The thing was, that after the initial explanation that Lee's coworker gave regarding the tasting and what else was available, he largely abandoned him, which meant we got no descriptions of the wine or the way it was made, the flavor profile, or anything else about it. Â This is BY NO MEANS Lee's fault as he clearly shouldn't be expected to know this stuff day one. Â In fact, we heard him do a great job of explaining one wine to a customer next to us who admitted to "testing him." Â meanwhile, there was one woman idly standing behind the bar who probably could have helped out, and two other bartenders who were audibly aware of all of the wine's characteristics as they were sharing with other customers. Â The female bartender had her hands full with 4-6 customers the entire time, but the guy initially helping Lee was really just hanging out and asking people if they needed anything every once in a while. Â We would have been much happier with this place if it had appeared that anyone was trying to train the new employee. Â Amazingly, we lost out because Lee's coworkers were apparently using the "hands off" approach to training.
The Winery at Olney needs some work on customer service.
For all my wine enthusiast, you gotta check this place out! My best friend went on Groupon and had a really fabulous time. Â The conversation went something like this, "Hey D, you wanna go get some wine on me?" Uh yeah! My mamma ain't raise no fool. So off we went with 3 other of our closest friends. Even though I have only been to this place once I've been to several wine festivals and and other tastings in the area and the experience we had was definitely a step above most. I say this due to the infinite amount of wines offered. I used up my "freebee" to just sample the wines on the Red side and had to pony up my own money so that I could switch to the white and fruit wine side.
I'm hesitant to recommend any wines since I've been described as a "wine" person. This basically means I drink more than fruit wines. LIke I said I spent a lot more time on that red side than the others. Oh okay, I was the only one who spent ANY time on the red side, but if you're someone who enjoys a good wine, red, white or fruit, this place has plenty to go around.
After our first round we did break down and buy the overpriced cheese platter. That being said, the platter went great with the wine and it was an assortment of high quality cheeses. Watch out though, they WILL charge you extra for those crackers (really? I was shocked).
The server did tell us that you could bring food in, maybe the better option for some. Panera among other eats are right there so it may be something you want to consider. She had a menu for all the surrounding joints, something we found very amusing. But after our two rounds we decided to just go next door sit down and order some food.
In any case I bought another Groupon so that I could take my husband and look forward to experiencing their wines again.
Glad to have the $10 coupon this time, last time I went I returned home with 4 bottles (before you judge it was buy 3 get the 4th bottle for $2 - again I ain't no fool), so it WILL come in handy.
Happy tasting.
This is the first winery I went to and I am anxious to try more places, but I will definitely stop by again if I'm in the area. It is odd that the winery is within a strip mall, but it definitely has its perks.I sat at the bar because I was doing the tasting, but they have tables and couches too. I wish I lived closer by so I could hang out and enjoy a nice glass of wine. The staff is attentive and friendly. I love the idea of making custom labels for a special occasion and will definitely keep that idea in mind.
Review Source:I visited The Winery at Olney with my boyfriend and two other family members, and we had a very pleasant time there. Â The winery is set up such that they import the actual grapes from numerous regions across the world, but they actually make all of the wines on site. They have well over 20 wines available, including whites, reds, one rose, and a few fruity wines.
Each of us tasted five of the wines that they had available, and many of us shared tastes of each other's wines. Â All of us agreed that none of the white wines really lived up to our hopes and tastes. Â They were very simple in flavor and most were far too sweet. The reds showed a little more promise, even though they still tasted very young. Â We actually ended up purchasing one of the wines--a mild but tasty Cabernet Sauvignon--and shared another bottle (the Raging Bull Tempranillo) between us along with two plates of cheese, which were simple in presentation but very good in quality and flavor of the cheese assortment.
Overall, the winery is attractive, relaxed, friendly, and very pleasant in atmosphere. We had a really nice time just kicking back with some wine and enjoying an afternoon catching up together. Â The Winery at Olney is definitely worth a look, but it seems to me like the wines generally need some refinement, age, and perfecting.
What a great concept, which I have not seen anywhere else. Not a traditional winery per se, as I would think of one (they don't grow their own grapes, etc., but rather buy grapes from around the world and then make their wines on-site at this strip mall). This shop is like the coffee shop in the TV show FRIENDS, except instead of coffee, they serve wine and some appetizers. My friend and I are seasoned connoisseurs of wines - we especially prefer trying dessert, sweet, and fruit-flavored wines. The peach and strawberry wines were quit exceptional, and having tasted award-winning wines presented at Wine festivals, I can easily say that the Strawberry wine (I bought a few bottles to go) was just as good if not better than some prize-winning strawberry wines that I've tasted in the past. Our waitress was quite exceptional during our wine tasting. She answered all our questions and made recommendations and asked our opinions of the wines during our tastings. I would definitely frequent this establishment again and can only hope that more establishments like this spring up, as we came from out of town. Our visit here was the perfect complement to our dining at a steakhouse a few doors down. I would always pair the two again.
Review Source:I gave the place three stars only because grading it "incomplete" was not an option. Stopped in on a Saturday night after a play at the Olney Theatre. Wife and I wanted a good glass of wine. There were probably ten or so people sitting around the bar and they seemed to be enjoying themselves. When we took a seat, the bartender informed us that they were closed (it was about 10 PM). Ended up going to Grillmarx instead.
Maybe they have to adhere to special laws or something but closing a wine bar at 10 PM on a Saturday night?? Geez are we in Florida??
I have been here once and loved it! Great atmosphere and great place. The awesome wines were a plus too! I recommend the wine tasting with a cheese platter. The staff was very attentive and helpful for recommendations too. Would definitely consider getting some wine there for a gift. The labels are so fun and beautiful! Highly recommend for anyone in town.
Review Source:Today I stumbled into The Winery, expecting to just peruse wines and buy a couple bottles. I was pleasantly introduced to a great concept.....a winery in an urban setting". Â The Winery is a very cozy, inviting place, with great tasting wines. Â I was able to just sit back, absorb the jazz music, and exhale. Â My server was so patient and warm. Â Â I love the Tastings option ($7 for five wines), which allowed me to select which bottles I wanted to take home. Â I was looking to have an usual, relaxing, pleasant day. Â I certainly got that at The Winery. Â I love this place, and I don't have to drive very far to get great tasting wines.
Review Source:Had my doubts of a winery in a strip mall but, all those doubts have been squashed. I have been to the Olney Winery three times since it has opened and absolutely love it!  Im a picky wine consumer (love my tannin) and have fallen in love with their In Boca al Lupo wine. Their decor is very comfortable and welcoming as the staff and owners. A great perk is being able to order in food from the local restaurants. The Winery will even supply plates and utensils, if needed. It is refreshing  to enjoy a  winery  without having to drive over an hour.  Definitely, looking forward to going back, creating my own wine and trying out their new ones!
Review Source:I just wanted to say, I been to the winery twice now with two different groups of friends who are avid wine drinkers. They love the wine. In fact they can not wait to go again. The wines are very good. I especially like the dry wine. I read one of the previous review and don't understand. All wine is fermented about the same about of time and class by year of grapes was harvested. Â I guess they don't know much about wine. Like I mentioned my friend are really into wine to the point of being wine snob. Again they loved it. Best part we don't need to drive far to visit an winery. The decor is very well done and staff is so friendly. Can not wait to go again.
Review Source:This place is my new favorite hot spot in Olney. If you like wine and a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The wines are inventive and refreshing. It a place for anyone who is looking for a relaxing environment to enjoy the evening. I highly recommend this place to anyone and everyone!!....to the poster who commented on the wines only being weeks old, if you would like an aged wine to accompany your snarky attitude, I would recommend that you buy a bottle and open it in ten years. :) If that is what floats your boat.
Review Source:I was very disappointed in the wine & the food selection. You can order a cheese plate on paper plate or a cheese plate on a paper plate. The wine is not good quality, but I assume that since it is so young it has not fermented and has 0 liquor content. One most assume this is how they are getting around montgomery county's food to liquor sales ratio.
Very confused on who & what they are marketing
We stopped in to see what the new shop was and was pleasantly surprised to see a wine bar with tastings.
They currently have 18 wines made in the shop with the anticipation of making 4 per month for the rest of the year. The volume of wines are a bit concerning as it means that they are making a lot without the focus on making a great wine instead of good. Also, they have a lot very young wines as well that you can taste in the flavor.
Overall, a fun place to go but we will probably only stop by once in awhile if we are in the shopping complex with friends.
Saw signs for The Winery at Olney and decided to check it out. Went on a Thursday afternoon for happy hour. It is a wine bar, so I purchased a glass of wine - Peach Chardonnay and truly enjoyed it. Found out that my glass of wine was 1/2 price, happy hour special, which was so totally worth it. Since they just recently opened, they also had some tastings from Taste Mezze (a local tapas lounge). Good thing to note is that they make the wines there. Will surely be back to visit as it seems like a great place to just relax and enjoy your wine.
