We've been eating at Yobo for many years, even before we actually moved to Newburgh. For sushi, you can't go wrong, as it's some of the tastiest and freshest in Orange County, though a tad on the pricey side. A nice selection of fresh fish is always available, and Yobo also has some really great and inventive rolls if plain sushi or sashima is not your thing. Where this restaurant loses points in my opinion is on their non-sushi menu. The Chinese & traditional Japanese items look great, but are mediocre at best, with dishes that are populated with way too many vegetables when the star of the show is supposed to be chicken, beef, pork, or seafood, and there's just not a ton of flavor to many of the dishes I've tried. Presentation though is always spectacular no matter what you order, and the ample drink & beer menu is always impressive. Service is always prompt and attentive, and you generally can have a good meal and a good time at Yobo as long as you stick to certain things.

There is a lot of old fashioned and campy charm to Yobo.  If you eat here, expect to spend a good amount of money, but the food is worth it with great service.  My favorites are the vegetable tempura appetizer, the orange glazed portobello, and a vegetable & spinach noodle dish that I don't think is on the menu anymore.  I'm not a huge drinker, but the drink menu is pretty extensive, and my husband & friends always seem quite satisfied with what they order.  I do wish there were more vegetarian entrees on the menu, but I'm always happy with what I wind up ordering.  Yobo has a pretty extensive dessert menu as well, and while most of the desserts are pretty heavy (I'd recommend splitting one), they are very good.  If you are looking for a place for a special occasion dinner, or would like a restaurant with a different kind of atmosphere and don't mind dropping a bit of money on a meal, I'd recommend Yobo for sure.

Tisha B. that wrote the review is obviously slightly touched. Jak has horrible food that cant even be compared to the awesomness at YOBO. is Jak even there anymore? lol. Yobo has a fine arrangement of food  that is quite extensive. Service is ALWAYS great and sometimes there is a wait, but it is def. worth it. This is one of my favorite restaurants of all time. Anyone that wrote a comment based on busy days like Father's Day or Mother's day should know that there is usually 100's of customers there that day. 100's. I used to live in the Newburgh Area and I would honestly eat there once a week. The food is fantastic, authentic, and amazing. Please branch out and make more so my pallet can be satisfied. :)

I think the interior is a little campy, but that was kind of the fun of it.  We had Cho Chi Bao for an appetizer it was light and fluffy and delicious.  I had the Orange duck.  This apparently is a concoction of Yobo.  They roast the duck then shred the meat off the bones, add an orange sauce then mash it into a paddy and fry it on a grill under a hot weight.  The upshot is you have this square slab with a crunchy seared surface and a meaty interior. It was served over white rice and was really awesome.

This place is decent if you want Americanized Asian food. Wish they had hibachi tables!

We went tonight for Father's Day. We went based on his last visit and the reviews. We were very disappointed by the service! We ordered a sprite and 2 tsing tao's. The soda took 7 minutes, the beer 16. We ordered food and waited. Finished our beers and waited. Three or four staff walked by our empty glasses and we waited. Finally we just started asking...and waiting more. 29 minutes for refills. 27 minutes between apps and dinner. The food is ok but not worth the atrocious service, particularly since they weren't busy! We will not be back.

This place is one of a dying breed. Yobo reminds me of my childhood where my family would go out to eat Chinese food.  Now mostly it's fast food Chinese which the quality stinks, not here though.  The food is top quality.  However they could update the menu.  Or maybe I just eat there too much lol

Good atmosphere, the aesthetic is truly pan-Asian.  Reliably good food.  Can get pricey if you order a bunch of appetizers, but they have all been wonderful as well.

Went yesterday, this was our first time and we wanted to try something new. We were the only people in the restaurant and it was a Saturday. The decor was really quaint and unusual, with Christmas lights on trees and origami birds hanging from the ceiling.

The menu wasn't as extensive on the sushi side as we would have liked, as that was the reason we were there. I found most of the rolls to have cream cheese and even mozzarella added to them, which is not traditional and annoying if you have a dairy allergy like I do.  We ordered two of their specialty rolls and four of their 8 piece rolls. They were good, but not amazing; one of the large was a little "unbalanced" as far as flavor, and the shrimp tempura roll was rather cold. I asked for spicy mayo and they brought me hot sauce with a little regular mayo squeezed in. NOT what I meant, but oh well. We ate every piece because we were hungry and it was decent, and they filled us up rather well. I was a little disappointed when our waiter recommended the Volcano roll AFTER we were finished, as I like to hear that while deciding. Staff was pleasant, one of them was rearranging the decor while we were eating and happened to swear the F word rather loudly when things weren't going his way. Decently priced, our entire bill came to about $63.

Overall it was a nice experience, but we were in good company so that helped. We will be trying a different place next time, as it wasn't good enough to entice me back.

Good food, a little pricey for what it is.

I have only been eating at this restaurant sporadically for a couple of years, but each time I am amazed at how good the food is.

Recently, I went in for lunch and I had miso soup with Thai rice and Thai Chicken & Beef.  The miso soup was beyond my expectations of how good miso could be.  It had these little "crunchies" floating with mushrooms that were just fantastic.  The Thai rice with coconut and banana was enough in and of itself and delicious.  The prices are surprisingly low - at first I didn't realize that I ordered two separate lunches.  The Thai rice lunch that came with soup was only around $6-7!  I really didn't need to order the Thai Chicken & Beef as the serving sizes are adequate.  But I sure was glad that I did!  Very good!

The atmosphere here is really special.  It's like eating in a Kung-Fu Movie set.  There are brooks (with real running water), and rocks going through the dining room, and trees everywhere.   In the bar there is an area where water drips down and sounds like rain.  It's relaxing and made me feel like I had escaped from the usual course of my day for a while.

The dinner menu has 5 (or more?) types of Food, and it is quite extensive with lower than expected prices.  I'm looking forward to exploring the menu more next time I go.  5 stars!

    very good service.
    lovely ambiance.
Not nice enough for me to go back though. I go across the river to Isamu now.

My fave sushi place in the area. I've had a variety of their offerings but the sushi boat is my favorite. Great selection by the chef every time and high quality fish. There Miso soup is also very good with deep flavors that stay on the tongue. Only thing I haven't liked from here is there calamari which was less than tasty and came with a dry dip (salt?) instead of the usual bbq or garlic found at many asian restaurants. It's a great place for a date too as the interior is pretty cool....set up like a Japanese garden.

We wanted to love this place, but the food was over-priced and the portion was much smaller than expected.  Still, if I happen to be in the area, I might try it again.  I did come on a weeknight, and sometimes, it's an off night.  Service was good, the decor was eclectic asian, and the food is definitely pan-asian.

It is always sad to experience a restaurant that has passed its heyday-especially when you can see the glimmers of greatness left behind.  It's obvious that Yobo was an amazing restaurant-once.  The building and the decor are lovely, and designed to truly draw the diner into the experience-the salsa-esque music, however, was not.  The waitstaff was genuinely friendly and welcoming, and were quick to both bring and clear dishes from the table.  The greeting staff was - a bit off, but I try not to judge...
Which brings us to the food.  DH and I came here for my pre-birthday dinner.  We've lived in the area for a while, and never gotten to try this long-standing gem of Newburgh. Thankfully-we have 2 more chances to get the celebration right.
I found the menu limited, and some of the flavor combinations were quite frankly - mind-boggling.  Sushi with melted mozzarella cheese, fish with cheese - it took both of us a while to find dishes that appealed to us, and we are neither of us unfamiliar with pan-asian cuisine.
We decided on a selection of appetizers and maki rolls.  I got the sate sampler, and DH got the miso soup.  This actually turned out to be a very good Japanese *mushroom* soup, not quite as advertised but well done.  The sate was - less-so.  The chicken was barely cooked through, and the "peanut" sauce was not like anything I have ever had at a Thai or Korean restaurant.  And they put this odd torch/bbq thing on the table that consisted of sterno gel on steel-wool, lit. I didn"t get it then, still don't get it now.
Then our "main's" arrived. California roll (the baseline test as far as I'm concerned), shimp & chicken dim sum, Spider roll, and an appetizer sampler with crab rangoon, BBQ ribs, fried shrimp and  sliced pork.  I would *love* to give the proper names, but I had a bit of trouble pronouncing some of them, and the waitstaff was unable to help.
The dim sum were presented steamed in their basket, with some unidentifiable piece of greenery beneath them.  I wouldn't have minded so much, but it was so damp that it stuck to the dim sum, and had to be peeled off.  The texture was fine, but the flavors were dull.  Everything fried was greasy - from the rangoon to the shrimp to the crab in the spider roll.  In addition, the spider roll was just crab and rice, served with a sweet sauce that soaked into the rice so that it completely overwhelmed the other flavors.  The California rolls were small, and mostly rice.  The BBQ ribs were overly sweet - I realized that they are supposed to *be* sweet - but these were almost nauseatingly so.
All in all - while the food was not hideous, it wasn't good either.  It was passable, and there are much better options for asian cuisine in the area.  The decor is beautiful, and if the food was just a hair better - we'd go back just for that.   But as it stands?  I'll wave as I head down the road to JAK.

Yay for Yobo! Although it's been years since I've been to this place, Yobo has been a fixture on Route 300 since I was a kid and it's still there today, serving up very high quality Asian food. Recession be damned!

While Yobo's exterior is placid and calm, resembling a Japanese-style house, the interior is an eye-assaulting mixture of decorative kitsch from every Asian culture. And let's not forget the giant fish tank near the front door. I think they even have koi fish in that thing, although I could be remembering incorrectly.

Anyway, the staff at Yobo is very nice and extremely personable, and when I arrived I was seated promptly. The menu is not strictly Japanese, and you can find a variety of Asian dishes ranging from Chinese to Thai. The prices are reasonable, and while my visit was so long ago now that I don't remember what entree I had, I do remember that I had the seaweed salad as an appetizer and it was excellent. My ex-boyfriend, who was my dinner companion that night, knew good Asian food when he tasted it and was pretty much an authority on the subject - he'd grown up going to high-quality Asian restaurants in New York City and Westchester. His verdict? He loved Yobo. He thought the food was fantastic, and you will too.

Yobo really does serve some of the best Asian food in the Hudson Valley, all at reasonable prices. The staff works hard to ensure that good food is on everyone's plate and that the customers are satisfied. The Hudson Valley lacks quality Asian restaurants in my opinion, but for the past 20 years Yobo has been swooping in and saving the day time and time again. There's no need to go to your local Chinese takeout place as long as Yobo's in business.

Let's talk food. Specifically, let's discuss good food. In discussing said topic, if we were to focus in on say... excellent Asian food, particularly in the Greater New York area, I think its pretty obvious that we need to talk about Yobo.

My family and friends and I have been coming here for years. First it was us kids being dragged to try new types of food (when all we wanted to do was see who would drink the grossest concoction of table sauces in their coke), years later the same group of delinquents found ourselves seated around the table with drinks that weren't so pungent but rather, tasty. And then full circle, most recently we invited our parents to join us.

Excellent food, great variety, SUPERB service. In short, delish.

It is a nice place and the food is outstanding, for good reason they're being in business for a very long time. But I think it could do better, specially now that there are more choices for Oriental food around.
On another note, mom loves this place =)

Coming from California I've been spoiled with amazing sushi, but this place takes care of my fix. I've tried other things outside of the sushi menu and it was OK. Their breaded shrimp with wasabi (a special) tasted stale, like it was deep-fried that morning and left out to sit until ordered. The shrimp was rubbery, BUT still edible (I don't want to completely rule out this place). The atmosphere is worth coming here though!

The sushi at this place is pretty good.  I usually do a take out of about 6 to 8 rolls and it's about $50.  The other meals are alright, but the atmosphere and staff are pretty good.

This is from my experience the best Asian Restaurant in the Mid-Hudson Valley. I've been visiting there for almost 20 years. For a long time the founder was present and she always greeted the guest at each table. She passed away recently but her daughter who took over the helm is doing just as fantastic a job as her Mom did.

Their appetizers and soups are very delicious. My fave is the hot 'n sour soup. They also have wonderful egg rolls and pot stickers. For the entrée I tend to go with the Sao Woo Duck, Yellow Fish, or Drunken Shrimp & Fish. Absolutely the best.

We go here as a family quite often. But since kids are in college I go there with my wife and we've invited guests many times. No one has had a bad comment to make about the restaurant. So, go for it!

This place has its flaws, but my family and I have been going for many years.

One thing is there are separate waiters for drinks and the food.  This is just plain weird, and it screws up the flow of the restaurant.  Another is the amount of alcohol they put in a vodka on the rocks.  My Dad orders this a lot, and they never put enough vodka in.  One time, our waitress even brought the vodka out and poured it in front of him--without  him asking--just to show him he got a full shot.  Ummmm wtf?  This isn't the case with other drinks I've gotten.  Lastly, they have screwed up orders with some regularity, especially when they are busy.

As for the food itself, its a very good mix of asian food.  I personally love the korean bbq, the thai spring rolls (best I've had),  and most of the other dishes Ive tried.  The place itself also looks very nice, and I like the variety of rooms.  Even the desserts are pretty good (although a bit generic) here.

This place can be a little off at times, but it is a solid restaurant with tatsy food.  Go in with a level head and you'll enjoy yourself!

I have to disagree with the poor reviews on this restaurant.  I have been going here for over 15 years now and have never been disappointed.
The service is always good and the meals are authentic and fresh.   I have to admit though, I have not tried the Sushi so maybe there is something to compain about there, however I highly doubt it since everything else here is great.

I had never in my 22 years of living in the greater Newburgh area, visited this apparent staple of Oriental Dining. My friend Jason suggested we go and when I got there I was really impressed by the atmosphere and very quick service. We went on a weekday fairly early so I'm sure on the weekends it may get a little more busy. As we were seated a young girl took our drink order, I ordered a mango citrus-y amalgamation of freshness and it was incredibly delicious. They also serve you this sweet tea which is a nice combination with nearly any meal you order. I was confused however when another gentleman came over to our table and asked what we would like. I told him that we were being helped already thank you, but my friend interrupted me and said that the other girl was just a cocktail waitress. I can't remember the last time that I was waited on by a cocktail waitress. Even the name alone makes me think of some corny 80's movie with Patrick Swayze with feathered hair and a sleeveless shirt. But I digress..
I ordered the Sesame Chicken which I was told by my friend was a very large portion and he was correct. I found two things to be a little disappointing. The plate was mostly chicken and had only a few carrots to offset the sweetness of the chicken. I know that sometimes this is how food is prepared but by the end of the meal the sweetness of the chicken had become a bit over-bearing.
Jason and I ordered another meal of Thai Curry Shrimp and Chicken with veggies. It was absolutely amazing. For anyone who has never tried Thai curry, drop whatever your doing, schoolwork, chores, feeding your toddler, simply drop your offspring and make a B-line for the nearest Thai restaurant, walk, run, take a rickshaw! , just get dat' curry. It is the most interesting tasting dish I have ever had, incredibly light and refreshing.
In summary, Yobo delivers appropriate and entertaining atmosphere, a diverse and reasonably priced menu (about 12-25$ depending on your choice), and quick service. Anyone looking to try something new and very satisfying should make their way to Yobo.
