wow!!!! gem in my hood!!!!! for breakfast you must get the chilaquilles suizos!!!! huge portion for like 7 bucks, my bf and i usually share! tortas are good, same as most places nothing crazy but still decent. The salsa is so addicting for some reason, basic but tasty! the staff is soooooooo nice always a smile and the food always taste fresh, even when im super tipsy and they are about to  close they make sure to take care of me!!!! the horchata is fresh ! oh and they have a full bar!!!! i just wished they had a patio!!! o and if you like to sing in spanish they have kareokee lol, not my style but they throw down/11
Review Source:One of my friends took me here because she claimed they had the best tacos and she wasn't kidding. Their tacos are great. I been to places where they get stingy with the meat, but not here, they load those tortillas with so much meat and everything else you sure won't leave hungry. Make sure you ask for everything on them though, avocado, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, the works. Trust me you won't be disappointed. Their Tortas are really good as well and their orchata is a must get when you order your food. I totally recommend you try this place at least once if you're nearby. Don't forget to order the tres leches cake for dessert.
Review Source:I have been going to this place since I moved to Logan Square in 2002. I can never get tired of the steak and eggs dinner, or the fajitas de azada, even regular tacos are the bomb. This joint looks as authentic as they come. Prices are decent and the staff has always been friendly. I have only attended one karaoke Friday night and it was a bit too loud.
Review Source:This place was not what I was hoping as far as food goes. I was looking for a Mexican place with just decent, cheap food.
The food was bland and unimpressive. I'd say just below decent, about two stars... it could do in a pinch; but the real problem is the service.
I came in and sat down, as directed by the woman behind the counter. After sitting for fifteen minutes with no one even pretending to  notice me (although none of the waiting staff seemed very busy), I got up to at least get a menu. I tried to order at the register and was told to sit and a waitress would be with me. A half hour later, and 45 minutes into my experience, someone finally got up the energy to walk over and take my order. Well over an hour into being in this restaurant I got my food. Totally unbelievable to me, as I work in a kitchen and would be fired if I took half that time.
I guess it looks like they have takeout ready if you call in, but I wouldn't. And seriously, don't waste hours of your time trying to dine in here. It's a joke.
Really good authentic Mexican food. Â I order take out lunch from here 12-3 times a week. I love the carne asada burrito. I special order my taco's with only cilantro & onion and they have no problems making them up for me. The guacamole is fresh and creamy and is seasoned to just right. Â The chips are light and airy and not loaded with grease like alot of other places.
Review Source:We come to Zacatecas all the time since it's so close and convenient to our apartment. Â Yes, I would say that the food is good, Â traditional Mexican--around 3 stars.
What takes it up a notch is the following:
- Prices. Â It's not super expensive here.
- Margarita pitchers. Â
- Spanish Karaoke--Really? Â It's fun. Â :-)
- Neat murals
- Rows of double sided comfortable booths
I finally tried this place out the other day and was really pleased overall. Â The Horchata and Carne Asada Dinner Plate combo was fantastic. Â My friends were also happy with the food. Â Only problem they had was ringing up my credit card. Â It seemed to take an eternity but if thats the only problem here im def. coming back. (with cash)
Review Source:Took a wrong turn on our way to Rewsters and ended up here for a late breakfast on a Thursday. So glad we did, what a great find. $3.95 breakfast specials did not disappoint. We both had huevos a la mexicana with hashbrowns and tortillas. Delicious and filling. Coffee was what you would expect but they came by at least three time to offer refills.
Review Source:I love it. It's local, it's cheap as all get out, and I have never waited more than ten minutes for my food to come out. Perhaps it isn't the 'most' authentic Mexican restaurant in Chicago, but I've never gone in there looking for 110% authentic cuisine. It's local, it's cheap, and it's fast. And it tastes good. Hard to beat that, in this economy.
Review Source:My wife and I have gone here twice and we love it for some strange reason. This is not where you go for a fancy dinner obviously, but to us, it feels authentic and love the name. Its cheap and the food is pretty good - feels like comfort food. My wife LOVES the chile rellenos. They do use a lot of cheese - so for us WI natives, this is great. The waitresses are friendly and the food is usually pretty quick. The margaritas are great too! They have karaoke on Fridays - but this isn't really our type of music, so we've never stayed.
Review Source:Just had breakfast here- I love the colors of the place- VERY cheerful, they made me happy. I ordered the chilaquiles breakfast special (which you can't beat for $3.95) and it was very good! coffee was good, the service was very friendly and attentive- my boyfriend got the huevos rancheros and that was tasty as well. LOVE the fresh squeezed orange juice- SO good!! We just moved across the street, so we'll definitely be back, I look forward to trying the lunch and dinner options!
Review Source:I've been to Zacatecas and the food here doesn't even come close. Now, if you are looking for a cheap meal that is comparable to other Mexican restaurants within a 5 block radius...then come to this place. The waitresses are nice...but a little on the slow side. The trick is to just go up to the cash register to pay your bill. My favorite things to order here is the pulpo y camarones en salsa ranchera and the coctel de pulpo. Never really been impressed by anything else here. If you ever stumble in here late at night on the weekends...you'll have the joy of seeing Mexican karaoke.
Review Source:I find myself return to Zacatecas every time I realize I for got to go grocery shopping, because it is so affordable and freaking delicious. Â I usually eat the steak or veggie burrito with an horchota. Â On Saturday nights they have karaoke, and even though I don't understand Spanish, it's a blast to watch. Â
My only advise is to avoid the chicken, but don't we all do that anyway?
Now, here's the thing, usually when I come here since I live right down the street I order my food to go and eat it at home. Their authentic mexican food isn't the best but its alright for something quick and easy to take home. That is where I would give this place 3-4 stars.
Coming in here to sit down for a meal, different story. The waitresses take FOREVER to serve you.
Good, tasty Mexican food at very good prices. Â I've been to Zacatecas probably a dozen times and have never been disappointed with anything I've order. Â Is it one of the best Mexican restaurants in Chicago? Â No. But it is a great place for Logan Square and if you're in the area I recommend it as your go-to place when you're craving a burrito, tacos or a staple Mexican dish.
Review Source:I was pleasantly surprised when I popped in here last weekend for breakfast. Â The chilequiles (my favorite breakfast food) were excellent. Â They were light and still crispy when fresh and had a good taste but were not overly spicy. Â The accompanying skirt steak was delicious. Â Great value, I couldn't finish and brought half the steak home. Â The interior is nicer than I expected from the outside, a small little restaurant with small bar and two or three large plasma tv's. Â The place was busy but not crowded. Â The staff was quick and gave me no problems. Â Nice option for me, as El Cid is closer but I do get a bit tired of their food all the time. Â I'll be back for more chilequiles for sure.
Review Source:When I think Mexican, I don't necessarily think vegetarian friendly (unless you're looking to carbo-load). I tend to REALLY like vegetables and dishes revolving around vegetables, unless I'm hungover and then I want to carbo and cheese-load.
Well, here you've got the best of both worlds. They've just added some new items to the menu. I've been ordering the vegetarian fajita wrap on a whole wheat tortilla lately. This baby comes stuffed with veg and guacamole and for $2.95, you can walk out stuffed. And if that isn't enough to satiate you, just load up on the complimentary chips and salsa.
I'm not saying that there are LOADS of veg options, but there are more than just the fajita or a bean burrito. They've also got, on their new menu, spinach enchiladas and spinach whole wheat tortilla quesadillas. This works for me. I love spinach.
On Saturday nights, they have karaoke. My fiance and I got hungry around 10 and decided to stop in for a quick bite and a beer. For less than $20, we got 2 entrees, drinks AND entertainment! And the music was really FUN!
I used to come here frequently when I was younger, and I miss the Zacatecas I grew to love. Â It was small and on the darker side, but it was cozy, and felt authentic. Â Then they changed and added colorful booths and painted the walls and the food wasn't quite the same. Â
I still really like this place, but it's hard to get friends to come here because they've had bad experiences at the Express one or really like the one on Milwaukee (I hate bot.h of those). Â
I've always gotten the carne asada dinner, and this is actually the only place I'll order this particular dinner. Â This is also the only place I'll eat enchiladas from. Â They're not OMG delicious, but, this was the first place I tried them and when I tried them somewhere else they just didn't cut it. Â
As far as I'm concerned, Zacatecas is like La Pasadita in the sense that people have their preference as to which location they like. Â I'm a fan of this Zacatecas, though I definitely think it was better years ago.
I come here quite often since I live right down the street and the food is definitely good. I usually get the tacos but I have had enchiladas, burritos, and quite a few of the appetizers. I eat at the restaurant but also get take out alot and am not disappointed. Â All in all, it is decent food. The margaritas are yummy and you can't beat the price. Will definitely keep coming back!!
Review Source:Gotta re-yelp after having breakfast here--so good and so cheap! Â You will be hard pressed to find something over $5 for breakfast, which is awesome considering even Golden Nugget charges eight bucks for an omelet these days.
Today I decided to get one of the pre-canned Bud Light cheladas, so I asked for one, and received an awesome homemade michelada instead--Bloody Mary, you are now officially dead to me.
I tried some of my wife's chilaquiles rojos and they were awesome--the fried tortillas had the chew/crunch consistency of perfectly done bacon, if that makes any sense.
A taste of Mexico
We come here every Sunday for brunch, and I still love it!!
Waiters are very nice, sometimes a little shy but very attentive, my hubby always gets his fresh orange juice "grandote" (means big) very refreshing and only cost 5 bucks.  Here the tostones are the best deal! You get 8 pieces of tostones (fry plantains) for only $1.50, beans are very well done, cooked to perfection, also for about the same price. I love avocado guacamole, fresh made.  My husband loves the burrito al carbon with Swiss on top, but everytime  it comes with mounster cheese, ok I guess.
To me the best deal is the sopa 7 mares (seafood soup), you get a big bowl of soup with shrimp, calamares, fish, octopus, crab legs, carrots and potato for only $9.95, what a deal!
It is true, it could be noise at times, but is a nice little place, very clean, and very close to my home.
I really enjoyed this place! We went for brunch and it was great. This is really authentic mexican food. I had the breakfast burrito with the hash browns and the freshly squeezed orange juice. Some of the best OJ ever! The steak and egg platter is a must have as well. The steak was really tender. The chips and salsa was very spicy and kept you wanting more. Â They serve alcohol as well
Great service and the decor makes you feel like you are in Mexico. They had plasma TVs on the wall from front and back angles so everyone could see the game, which was great. Prices are reasonable and I will be back!
I love Mexican food, and growing up in rogers park really got me spoiled (Hernandez at Clark/Lunt and taqueria el chorrito at Clark/Devon are my personal faves, but Clark St. up there is bursting with gastrodelights) so after moving to Logan, I was really excited to try the neighborhood taquerias, thinking they'll be at least on par with the 'rog. Â The closest place to me is this Zacatecas and unfortunately, it doesn't make the grade.
The chicken burrito had bones in it (!!) The beans are dry and crusty most of the time. Sopes are soggy, horchata is totally made out of powder, even the salsa is weaksauce. I've given this place many chances, and it sadly never hits that sweet spot.
In a pinch get a steak chimichanga, it's decent, Â and try to get carryout late nights on Friday and Saturday, the whole place turns into a karaoke lounge!
All in all, no.
Pretty gross. I've tried it three times because it's close and cheap and I was starving, but I've finally learned my lesson! I got burritos all three times, twice steak and once chicken. The chicken is that horrible, all dark meat with that gristle and bone and tendons crap that some Mexican places love to use. It was entirely inedible, and I like dark meat! But seriously, there aren't that many of those chewy artery things on the whole bird, why are there 20 in one burrito? The steak is slightly better but too salty and has entirely too much gristle. Spend a little more money on quality ingredients, guys! Also, the salsa was pretty boring, but probably the best part of the dining "experience."
Review Source:I miss Tacos Y Salsa. Â I used to even give up my loyalty to Avondale and cross the street to spend my Avondale dollars in Logan Square.
So Zacatecas is the next closest Mexican restaurant... Â have eaten there a few times, they have some nice margarita specials, but this is some of the blandest Mexican food I've ever had in Chicago. Â Unlike Tacos Y Salsa, they spend their revenue on washing their sign, rather than buying quality spices. Â Two stars for being edible and cheap...
The thing about Zacatecas is that it's two blocks away. It's better than Taco's Y Salsa, but it's not better than La Pasadita. If we move out of Logan Square, I probably won't go out of my way for Zacatecas, but when I'm lazy or have a hang-over, Zacatecas is right on time. They have really awesome fresh squeezed orange juice, but their chips are kind of gnarly. You know, this place really isn't that good now that I'm thinking about it. My BF loves the F-ing place, but I'm kind of over it. Unless I'm drunk. He's all, "What? How you gonna go and say that Zacatecas isn't that good?" And I'm all, "Zacatecas is for times when you're lazy or drunk. That's all." And he's all, "it's a quality taco shop."
