Quite good! Â We love finding good food at a hole-in-the-wall place, and this is DEFINITELY a hole-in-the-wall. Â The public area is about the size of our (galley) kitchen, and you look directly into the kitchen. Â There are a couple of small tables in the "dining room," but I'd wager they've never been used.
We got General Tso's Chicken, which was B+/A-. Â Not as orangey and spicy as some, but it was nice and crispy, and pretty darned good. Â The Happy Family was fresh and the flavors were distinct; I'd give it an A! Â it was loaded with some of everything, from chicken to lobster. Â Mmmmm! Â Definitely a winner.
And... We got Crab Rangoon, which were crisp and sweet. Â I think of them as Chinese cannoli. Very good.
Overall, a definite winner. We live nearby, so not doing delivery is not an issue. Â We spent $23 on the items mentioned above, and the two of us barely finished half of it.
I'm giving this place four stars because I think that while it's not quite to the five star level, how many backalley chinese joints can really be five star? This place is about as good as it possibly can be considering it's location and (visible) working staff of two.
Pro's include convenience of being just down the street from my house, a vast menu, decent prices considering the portions given, and quick service.
Con's include the nonexistent restaurant atmosphere, subpar food quality, and relatively cold/unfriendly service.
Picked up my dinner here last night. When I called ahead the dude wasn't really playing games, I wasn't even sure if I had called the right place actually, because he didn't prompt me or anything, just said 'Hello'. Got the General Tso's when I probably should have went w the much-Yelped-about Chicken in Garlic Sauce. No worries, there will be a next time, Mister Zheng. The chicken wasn't the freshest and kind of had a grey-ish tint to it, with soggy broc and syrupy sauce. Because I've had crispy perfect golden brown General Tso's with steamed broccoli at other comparable joints albeit outside of the city, it's a little bit of a letdown. Thinking about it more as I type and I'm tempted to downgrade to three stars, honestly. But you get what you pay for and I didn't pay much, and I feel that needs to be taken into account.
I'll definitely be back considering the place's proximity to my home, so if anything changes I'll come back and edit or update this review.
If you are looking for the perfect Chinese dive without the soggy chicken...you've found it!! Â The place itself is a little rough. Â I definitely wouldn't try to eat there...there is seating for about 3.5 people. Â But the carry out service is quick and impressive! Â The food is always hot, fresh and crispy! Â The order taker over the phone is short and to the point, no fluff. Â I like it. Â Anytime i'm looking to stay in for a night and eat-in...this is my go-to Chinese dive! Â Oh and did I mention that is super cheap?!
Review Source:So before I begin, I should start off by saying that I'm a snob when it comes to Chinese food. Â I know what I want, and my expectations are that it is going to be the best thing ever. Â Needless to say, despite rave reviews from others, Zheng's misses the mark.
I called and ordered boneless spare ribs (the greatest meal ever), and I arrived about 20 minutes later (to ensure that my food was prepared) when I arrived. Â Not only was my food not ready, it seemed like they didn't even remember that I had ordered!
So, I had to wait another 20 minutes for my food to be prepared. Now I know that people make mistakes, so I wanted to give this place another chance after reading rave reviews on Yelp. Â Now it didn't help that the restaurant is about 1/5th's the size of an average person's living room, so it feels more like a bus stop than a restaurant. Â FURTHER, given the fact that there was a mistake on their part forgetting my order, there could've been better customer service. Â (I'm not saying I wanted it to be free--but COME ON PLAYA!!!!)
OK, now to the food.
EHHHH...
The fried rice was decent. Â The boneless spare ribs were decent. Â It was definitely GOOD, don't get me wrong, but I want my Chinese to be GREAT! Unfortunately, Zheng's Garden wasn't great, it was meh. Â
On a good note, I should also mention that Zheng's is VERY cheap, and the dinner portions are quite hearty, which is a plus.
This place is clearly meant for takeout. Their food is absolutely delicious - I've had their chow mien and lo mien. I will say that the guy who has been there both times I've gone is incredibly rude. The only reason it has four stars is because the food is delicious and I only had to deal with him while I paid - I just took everything home.
Review Source:This place is definitely designed for carry out. Â If you keep that in mind, you'll have a great experience. Â Food is really cheap and tastes amazing! Â They really know how to fry their tofu! Â First time I went, I had the tofu and broccoli with garlic sauce. Â By far the best garlic sauce I've ever had. Â Second time, I got the General Tso tofu with broccoli. Â I'm not a huge fan of General Tso sauce, but Zheng's sauce is a perfect mix of tangy and spicy with a hint of sweetness. Â Highly recommended for Chinese take out in the vicinity of 38th and College.
Review Source:The food here is pretty decent and super cheap. I spent $14 on two small entrees and a small soup and I've eaten leftovers for 3 days!
I would recommend takeout as the dining space is EXTREMELY small - like 3 tables. It was also ARCTIC in there when I stopped in. It was 20 outside and I was cold indoors. Must be hot in front of those gigantic woks they use.
Overall I was very pleased with the quality, quantity and service. Will definitely be back!
