You know, I found this place to be just ok. For instance: I noticed that some of the cheeses looked dried out, and I know some cheeses are cracked with age, but these were just unused. And the peppers located in the vegetable bins were dry and old, so that was a bit disappointing to see. For having such high expectations of the place, I was really disappointed that they don't seem to clean out the bins every now and then. Who knows, maybe I just caught them at a weird transition period. Maybe I shouldn't judge on a couple of weird items that I probably only noticed, but when you here high raves all the time and all these 5 star ratings, I expect to be stunned with the beauty that is delicious, wonderful foods when I walk in the door.
I've had the bacon at City Cafe, there's no argument that it's the best bacon in the world. On this day, we bought some sausages, garlic and duck, and ate them last night. The garlic sausage was excellent, soft, tasty, very good. The duck was ok, but it could be that the flavor just wasn't for me. They look gorgeous, don't let me sway you away from eating it. The tongue pastrami tasted like pastrami! Go figure! In a way, I wish it didn't have as many spices on it so you can get a good taste of the tongue. Maybe have an option of tongue without the pastrami spices?
The downstairs is pretty awesome. I need to go back to 1) have a prepared sandwich or 2) get some sausages, cheese (the not-dried-out-variety), prosciutto, and wine, and go down there with a good friend, eat, drink, and be merry in a quaint little basement bar. I found that to be the best part of the whole place.
You know, I know Indy is really trying hard to get in on the food movement, and we need places like this to thrive and become what they have the potential to be. So go there!! Eat the cheese so they rotate them through better!! Buy a vegetable for the same reason!! Give them a reason to become bigger and better!! Buy the bacon, it's the best bacon I've ever eaten!!
I went to Goose the Market today for the first time. I had read the reviews here, mostly good and some not so good so I thought I would give it a try. I'm originally from the Chicago area so I find Indy food to be a little lacking even though my Indy friends tend to like it. This is why I have taken up cooking on my own and I try new places with caution.
This place was fabulous. I was greeted promptly. It was sunny, clean and inviting. I ordered the Batali. While I waited I looked in the case and was pleasantly surprised to see items like fresh duck breast, duck fat and pastrami. Yes, the prices were higher than a mega store like Whole Foods but I wouldn't expect lower prices at a local market with fresh items. They aren't buying in bulk like a major chain and I appreciate their commitment to offer these specialty items in the city and supporting local food producers.
My daughter, who is afraid of tasting anything new, ordered gelato.
It took a few minutes for my sandwich to be prepared but that gave me time to ooh and ah at the other items for sale. Black rice? I'll be back.
We took our food to go and ended up in a parking lot because I had errands to run. But I made the mistake of sniffing my sandwich through the butcher paper it was wrapped in. So I had to eat it right there. It was excellent. I mean really excellent. I mean the best thing I've eaten since I've lived in Indy. The bread is corse and chewy. I found that if I tore it into pieces it was easier than bitting into it. My picky daughter said I was making so many sounds (uumm, yum, wow) that she wanted some. So I gave Ms. Picky eater some cheese and meat from my sandwich and she said it just melted in her mouth and had a very good flavor. I can honestly say it's one of the best things I've ever eaten.
So Goose, you won yourselves a new customer today with your excellent customer service, your quirky and quality selections and your very tasty sandwich.
